Let Down Your Guard [P]

It had been some time since Blue had last ventured out of his own accord. The night was almost a stranger to him, now. The light of the full moon burned where it touched his skin, but only faintly, and the scant glow of the stars burned fainter still. He didn't mind. The moon offered protection from the eldest of his kind, and he was certain that he could handle any young enough to still emerge with the moon in full view.

Granted, he hadn't had much cause to leave his home as of late. Dante had gone, and Blue had uprooted from his last establishment in the city to somewhere more remote. He had grown so used to the reclusive lifestyle that the lack of necessity had done away with his motivation to leave his home altogether, until finally a restlessness had forced him from it.

Taking a deep breath of the night air, he looked out at the expanse of grass stretched before him. He was situated on a farming property, and thus not entirely cut off from civilization even here. It had been a choice of convenience rather than pragmatism, for he still preferred human blood to that of an animal if it could be had, and this was as far out as he could go without losing his connections to the medical establishments that supplied him with his meals. There was a copse of forest that surrounded his home, cultivated to shield the house from the sun during the day, but he had wandered beyond it. Standing where he was, he could just about make out the next house over.

The openness of the land made him uneasy from force of habit, but there was one advantage: he could see anyone and anything coming from hundreds of meters away. For the moment, reassured by the fact that he was quite alone, Blue was content to meander along an old, half-broken fence. Without his ward, he found that he had grown lonely--- and that worried him, more than anything. He had been lucky in Dante; realistically he did not expect to find such a trustworthy companion again. More tellingly, it had made him content to be idle. Despite the boy's lineage, he had not thought with much seriousness of Rafe in years.

“I suppose that would infuriate you, to be so casually forgotten,” he said, looking up at the sky. Rafe, of course, would be deep underground somewhere. He had lost the ability to tolerate the moon a long time ago. But if Rafe had been intent on being remembered to Blue, surely he would have done something, sent someone to hound him by now. It had been too long, and even as Blue thought of his old foe, a hope kindled itself in his heart, that perhaps the grudge had been forgotten.

While certain people had the privilege to casually wander about under the full moon, other people did not.

It had been perhaps two hours, and she was still staring out from behind the corner of the neighboring house, glaring darkly at the open field as she tried to determine the best way to sneak up on the vampire. Uuuuuuuuuugh. No cover. No cover at all! Not even a single lonely tree or forgotten hay bale! There was absolutely no way to approach her target unseen, which very nearly made her want to give up for the night and try again at a later date. The best weapon to have against a demon was surprise, after all. To give that up was to very nearly ensure your death.

But who knew what the weather conditions would be in a few weeks' time, and she had already come all the way out here... She couldn't just quit now. He was right there, for crying out loud!

Hissing under her teeth, the hunter shifted her weight and thought over her options some more. The most likely candidate was approaching the vampire in her feline form, which said volumes about her situation. Sure, she could probably catch him by surprise in the sense that he probably wasn't expecting a shifter to suddenly up and attack him, but... well, she'd be going in 100% weaponless. And shirtless. Unfortunately, she wasn't the sort that carried clothes or items between forms.

The other option was to attempt to sneak up on him as a fully-equipped human, which only had a chance of working in this open field if the vampire abruptly lost all use of his senses. Talk about being stuck between a rock and a hard place.

Hnnnnnnnnnnnngggghh. Well... Theoretically... she could leave her weapons here, by the house, and... try to convince the vampire to follow a poor little kitty to its home... Ugh. It was a stupid idea, but honestly it was the best she had had all night.

Sighing quietly to herself, the girl quickly stripped down, stuffing her clothes in a bush and burying her weapons in a shallow depression in the dirt. Then she began the transformation, a process that was thankfully quiet due to the fluid nature that it took. Shaking herself, the hunter rubbed a bit of dirt into her paws (had to look like a cat that had been outside a while, right?) and then did her best to make a beeline for the vampire while... not. Cats were notoriously fickle, after all. She needed to look like she was interested in everything but the strange person walking along the fence.

they're lesbians, harold

Blue caught himself, and smiled ruefully. There he was, talking to himself. Maybe he should see about finding some company after all, before he picked up any more odd habits. Insanity was, apparently, the curse of all elder vampires. He had thought it a side product of the corruption inherent in the covens, but perhaps it was simply the passage of time that wore on them.

Speaking of company... There was something creeping up behind him. He could sense it, a mix of sound and scent and something else, that innate awareness that his kind had for anything with a heartbeat and warm blood. Animals were not as palatable as humans, but when a vampire had no other alternative, or did not wish to dine on humans, they made do. Blue turned to face it, though only out of curiosity. It wasn't unusual for there to be cats on the prowl, both feral and not, out here on the farms. There were myths, too, that vampires had an affinity for felines, as fellow predators with a penchant for toying with their prey. "Well, hello," said Blue, squatting down and reaching out a hand.
