A King of Infinite Space [P]

Sometimes when Blake was away, Alain wandered. Or perhaps that wasn't the right word for it; people wandered, and the word had a tendency to imply use of one's own body. What he did was something else, but he didn't have the word for it, and 'wandering' was as close as he could get.

If one wanted to be technical, then technically it was the Cafe that did the wandering, though it did so at his behest. At one point, the Cafe had felt like an extension of himself, but more and more these days it took on a will of its own. Now it knew places that even he didn't know, and he had the feeling that it might be keeping secrets from him once in a while. He didn't like that, but there was a certain advantage in being able to ask it to take him somewhere he hadn't been before, and not be met with confusion and distress.

Alain felt a familiar tug in his core as the surroundings around them began to shift, and closed his eyes. If it was going to be a surprise, he might as well play into it a bit more, he thought. However, that gentle tug turned abruptly into a sharp, searing pain that brought him out of his ruminating reverie. His eyes snapped open, and he looked about himself uneasily. He was still inside the confines of the Cafe, but that was just the problem: it felt confined, as if it was being squashed down by... something. Which frankly shouldn't have been possible, considering it occupied a space all its own, devoid of any other residents.

A look out the window revealed himself to be between, a slice of nowhere. He willed the Cafe back to a safer place, opening one of its doors to somewhere corporeal to anchor it just in case. "Where were we going anyway?" he asked; the tug was starting again, and the Cafe evidently meant to make another try of it. He didn't know if that was a good idea, but he supposed he was going to find out.

He was doing his usual chores: making sure the castle was clean, making sure everything was in order, making sure everything was normal. Keeping things in order on all fronts, so to ensure that things went on without a hitch. Although he was not allowed to directly interfere with the affairs of the kingdom — those duties being for the king, and the king alone — it was his duty to make sure everything else was as it should. If just one cog was out of place in the big machine, the king would struggle to manage the empire.

"Empire" was a loose term, in their case. While his king was certainly the owner of a nice little piece of village, the kingdom itself wasn't much compared to a typical, normal kingdom. It was only about a few hundreds of citizens, and really, managing it took very little effort when compared to bigger, more successful kingdoms. But then, the point of this kingdom's existence wasn't to become big and successful: not really. That would be nice, but there was an underlying need for it that had nothing to do with that, not bound by the expectations of human society.

It was during his time managing the kingdom that something came up. A small disturbance in the atmosphere of the empire; it wasn't much, but it was definitely trying to breach in. It didn't feel like a threat, but merely like a little something trying to merge into the kingdom's space and time.

The matter wasn't for him to settle: this was not his domain. "King Koniglitch," he spoke as he entered the room of the young king, so as to bring along the matter to his attention. "A certain matter requires your attention."

The young king sat in his throne room, looking positively bored; but when his butler of black-and-white appeared, his interest perked up just ever so slightly. "Koni," he insisted as the other came in. "What?" he asked the older man, one who looked to be about in his early forties, but nothing short of healthy and attractive, despite slowly getting up there in age.

"A little disturbance in the space continuum," the older one explained, ignoring the comment on the name, and he raised an eyebrow curiously at the king. "Surely you'd already picked up on it?"

Koniglitch looked back at his butler with a flat look. "A bit," he admitted, but his voice was uninterested. "I didn't pay much attention to it." His butler replied nothing, and after a bit of silence, Koniglitch sighed through his nose. "What do you suggest, then, Laurence?"

"It doesn't seem to be a threat," Laurence, the butler, said rather matter of factly. "I would let it in, just to see what it is."

Koniglitch tapped a finger on the arm of his throne; and then, he straightened up in his chair. "Fine," he agreed before getting up, positioning his crown back into place and adjusting his large velvet cape, "but send Dexter to take a look to make sure it isn't anything dangerous," he added, his tone taking a slightly more authoritative tone this time around, as he breathed deeply and closed his eyes.

"Certainly," Laurence assured, giving a short nod as he let the king do his magic — quite literally. There was a visible change in the atmosphere of the kingdom, and the little presence that had previously been causing a hiccup disappeared, as the two conflicted spaces and times merged together. The king did fancy a little dose of new in his life, and Laurence himself was curious to know what had caused that little breach in their kingdom.

Whatever the disturbance had been, it was no longer resisting quite so much. In fact, it felt rather as if it wasn't resisting at all anymore. There was still the sense of something a little different about the nature of their destination, but it was only a vague one, and the Cafe wasn't bothered about it in the least. It took up in the new space with an air of satisfaction. Alain, feeling less confident in their new location, kept the one door open to his anchor point, though the sign on that particular door said 'closed'. The others he cautiously flipped to 'open', and he peered out of one of the many expansive windows at the world outside the Cafe walls.

It looked... surprisingly mundane, for a place that had given them the trouble it had. The buildings looked modern, and the people did too. He couldn't place where it was based on the ethnic distribution of the people he saw, as they were too mixed; and the weather and building style only betrayed them as not anywhere with extreme or notably strange conditions.

"How thoroughly bizarre," he murmured. "I have no idea where you've taken us. I hope we don't regret this." He somehow doubted the Cafe would, but he himself was a different story. He entertained the idea, momentarily, of going outside, but dismissed it immediately. He'd wait for a customer to come in first, and get an idea of the locals from the safety of his familiar space before he did anything rash like that.

As mundane as it looked, the little village had a certain air to it. Houses were mostly modern, but some had a distinct feel to them that echoed more the past, or even something one could imagine of a near future. Still, the atmosphere wasn't aggressive or even tense, despite how many cultures were apparently crammed into this one little kingdom. That would have been an easy judgement to make on the behalf of outsiders, but seeing it firsthand, the people in the village seemed to be good friends with each other.

Aside from that, the only thing that stood out was the massive castle in the middle of the kingdom, plated in red and gold, screaming of luxury. That wasn't to say the rest of the kingdom looked poor or unkept, but the castle definitely stood out for being above everything else with respect to every detail.

The appearance of the Cafe didn't seem to bother anybody in the slightest. Many of the citizens walked past it without so much as glancing at it, though some looked curiously at it; in a good way. Yet, none of them took the first step of walking in. Some actually seemed to consider it, stopping in front of the new little business to take a better look at it.

There was only one person who approached the Cafe and who took the initiative of walking in.
Image
He was a somewhat tall man dressed in an all-white suit, complete with longer coattails, with matching, short white hair that had seemingly been combed to perfection. The man had striking purple eyes, a color unseen in humans, despite him looking exactly like one, and being somewhere in the age of a man in his thirties. Though, it was hard to tell people's age by looks alone, nowadays.

A small pair of glasses sat by his breast pocket, neatly folded. Apart from his appearance, there was a strange air to this man; one the citizens outside didn't have. He looked, acted and moved like a normal human being, but his presence indicated that he was something more than just a human mortal.

He stepped into the Cafe quietly, first stopping beyond the door to take a quick look at the decor; and then moving onward to the counter in order to look over the menu. His eyes clearly scanned the selections, though the man hadn't spoken yet. "Hi," he greeted, finally, after a few solid seconds of looking at the Cafe and the menu in silence. His voice didn't indicate much of anything, whether friendliness or aggressiveness, standing somewhere on the line of neutrality and professionalism. "What would you suggest?" he asked shortly afterwards, focusing on the one man who was in this little Cafe.

Alain was left to watch the people outside, with a growing feeling of something like boredom as they all passed  him by. The few who hesitated in front of the shop were the worst of the lot, as far as he was concerned--- just as soon as he had straightened up a little and gotten hopeful, they hurried away again. He was beginning to wonder if something untoward had happened to the shop exterior when finally, someone stepped through the door. He could feel the presence crossing the threshold, the subtle rearrangement of the interior space as it shifted to accommodate the newcomer.

The man wasn't human, but many of Alain's customers weren't. The thing that made him suspicious was that this was the first visitor. He wanted to ask the Cafe again just where it had chosen, but now was not the time. Smiling at a patron was almost reflex by now. "Welcome," he said, setting aside the silverware that he had been polishing. He considered the man carefully for a moment, setting aside his musings about the nature of his non-humanness, and focusing on them as a customer instead. Not picky, this one. He weighed his options. "The espresso ristretto is a personal favorite," he said. "If you prefer something lighter, a caffe latte, perhaps?" The manner of the man who had entered was a bit too bland and curt for Alain's liking, but for the moment he was just glad to have someone to keep him busy, and perhaps from whom he could glean a few clues about the nature of where he was.

As the shop owner gave him choices, the patron eyed the owner carefully. He took in the presence, the looks, the voice, the overall presentation of his person. There was something about this place; a small, tiny shifting of space had happened upon him entering the shop. Perhaps this shop owner was more than just a simple human. In and of itself, he had to be; this shop was not originally from their kingdom. They had to have travelled through some kind of space in order to land in their kingdom.

"Very good," he replied to the given choices, and he nodded with a small smile; though his tone remained professional. "A caffe latte would be perfect, if you would be so kind," he ordered, and while he had questions for the owner, he preferred to wait until the barista had processed the order before going into deeper territory. "Is your business new around these parts?" he asked for the time being, something he judged to be a fairly casual question.
