A Home Away From Home [Self]

It had now been several weeks since her arrival on this strange world. Sekhmet was finally beginning to believe that they were no longer actually in the same realm, and perhaps not even in the same universe that they originated from. A few weeks ago, that might have been a source of desperation and despair for her, but in the days which she had spent here, she’d learned much and was beginning to accept that she might have to make a life for herself in this alien world. Perhaps it was some of Ouranos’ practicality rubbing off on her, but she didn’t think that sitting around pining for her past life was going to get her anywhere if she wanted to continue living her own life.

She’d since wandered out of the woods, both literally and figuratively, and met some interesting people of this world, including a very unique stranger in one of the bookstores in town. She’d been trying to learn more about the place she was in at the time, and perhaps she’d inadvertently made a friend (or at least an acquaintance) while she was at it. If nothing else, the experience had at least served to open her up to the world around her, and she’d grown less skittish of this strange society which she now found herself immersed in. Since her first foray into the town nearby, she’d been searching for a place on the outskirts to call a home, or at least something more akin to one than the cave in which she and Ouranos had been staying in the meantime.

Her wanderings had taken her to some of the more rural dwellings on the fringes of the city, where most people were self-sufficient and grew or raised what they needed to survive on. The farmland was relatively peaceful, with only the occasional sounds of livestock and songbirds to break the quiet. It was midmorning, so most of the early-morning bustle was already over and through with, and most of the people of the farms were indoors partaking in an early lunch. Sekhmet had only really seen a little of the agriculture from back home, and none of it looked anything like what she saw here, short of some of the livestock, perhaps. Most of the focus back in the desert had been on irrigating the arid land, and much of what grew there was much smaller and tougher than the lush vegetation which could be found flourishing here.

She couldn’t help but be fascinated by the wild variety of different plants which grew in this more deciduous area; fruits, vegetables, and flowers beyond her imagination. She could tell that it was all meant for consumption, but she couldn’t even begin to think how the foods were supposed to be prepared, let alone how they would taste. Her mouth watered at the thought, nonetheless – it had been a long time since she’d last had a proper meal. In fact, she hadn’t really had one since they’d arrived here, considering their lack of worldly goods and currency. All that had been left behind in their “old world”. Here, they were truly starting from scratch, and it was an idea which she found both scary and thrilling at the same time.

Sekhmet continued to meander through the farmlands, finding that the further she went, the more urban the land around her became (although only in small measures) as she drew closer to the boundaries of the city. Seeing that, she changed her trajectory slightly, following the line of houses which marked the heart of the farmlands. She didn’t think that she was quite ready for “city life” just yet – not when there was so much that was new to her. Better to take things slowly than to bite off more than she could chew off the bat. She was surprised that she had yet to come across a single person in the time she’d been out here. Sure, she’d seen families through the windows peering into the houses, but she hadn’t quite worked up the courage yet to knock on any of the doors. So for the time being, she settled on strolling through the town, hoping that perhaps luck might find her instead.

As she rounded a corner from the cobblestone street which she was on leading onto another, a figure in the distance caught her eye. It was a woman, picking vegetables in her garden by her house, bent over and intent on the work at hand. Sekhmet wavered for a moment, then resolved herself and continued to walk towards the stranger. It took her only a minute or so to draw close enough to attract the eyes of the lady, and she was somewhat surprised to be greeted by a warm smile. “How are you today, my dear?” the stranger asked in a motherly voice, the wrinkles by her eyes crinkling as she smiled at Sekhmet. The young woman was tongue-tied for a moment, suddenly unsure of how to respond. She was afraid that if she started speaking, her foreignness would immediately show, or perhaps she would give away too much about how she’d come to be here and without doubt, be marked as a madwoman.

“I’m fine…thank you,” she finally managed to blurt out, her words odd to the ear due to her unique accent. Once again though, she had to bless her luck that the people here spoke the same “common tongue” which she had been taught as a child, and also the fact that her governess had made such a point of drilling the language into her head, despite her protests at the time. However, that was as far as her thoughts went at the moment – after all, how was one supposed to approach a stranger and tell them that they literally had nothing to call their own, let alone a place to live? It was an embarrassing prospect at best, and Sekhmet wasn’t sure how to broach the topic, or even if she thought she would be able to in the first place. So instead, she simply dropped her gaze awkwardly to her feet, trying and failing to find a proper conversation starter.

The woman seemed to take all of Sekhmet’s awkwardness perfectly in stride, as if she realized that there was something that the young woman wasn’t being entirely forthright about. She smiled kindly, stopping in her task of plucking ripe tomatoes from the vine for a moment as she wiped a gloved arm across her brow, tracking a small smudge of dirt onto her forehead as she did. “Have you had anything to eat yet? You look like you could use a good meal, and I’m just in the middle of cooking up some lunch right now.” Noting Sekhmet’s discomfort, she chuckled lightly, although her gray eyes were reassuring. “Don’t you worry, dear. There’s plenty to go around.”

Sekhmet glanced up in surprise at the reaction which she got from the older woman. Whatever she had been expecting, it definitely hadn’t been that. “Oh, I…uhh…” She shifted uncomfortably, embarrassed that she had been so transparent. Of course, the woman couldn’t be blamed though – Sekhmet had definitely lost some weight in the time that she had been here, and the want for food was definitely beginning to show in her features. “I couldn’t possibly…” But her words were cut short by the farmer’s wife’s reassurances, and she finally looked up again, making eye contact with the kindly lady. “That’s…that’s very kind of you,” she finally managed, and although her words were halting, there was genuine gratitude in her tone.

The lady heard the thanks in the young woman’s tone and nodded firmly, as if that decided matters. Standing up, she brushed the front of her frock off, pulling the gloves off her hands and placing them in the wicker basket by her feet before picking it up. The basket was filled with a variety of different vegetables which would be used in both lunch and dinner today, and as she had mentioned, there was definitely plenty to go around. “Come on in, we can’t have you standing out there in the street all day, now can we?” She gestured to Sekhmet, walking over to the front gate to unlatch it and let her in. “My name is Katarina, by the way.”

It took a moment for Sekhmet to unroot herself from where she’d been standing, staring, but she did so as the woman stood up to let her in. Hesitant at first, she made her way through the painted white fence, standing patiently as the lady shut and latched it once again behind her. “My name is Sekhmet,” she managed as the woman named Katarina led the way towards the small farmhouse. The names here were so strange compared to those in her land. She decided not to try to pronounce her hostess’s name just yet, for fear of offending her. “It’s a pleasure to meet you.”

Katarina swung the screen door of the front entrance open, holding it for Sekhmet before opening the actual front door to let them inside. “Sekhmet,” she said, testing it out – she’d never heard a word anything like it before in her life. “What a pretty name.” Taking her boots off at the door – which her guest emulated – she walked through the hallway to the kitchen, which was only a few steps away. As most farmhouses went, her home was small but cozy, and there was no wasted space anywhere in any of the rooms. “Momma!” a small voice called a blue bundle came barreling out of a side room to collide with the woman’s legs. A young teenage boy followed more slowly, his blue eyes lighting on the stranger and watching her wordlessly as she shifted uncomfortably under his gaze. “Children, this is Sekhmet. She’ll be joining us today for lunch. Won’t you show her where to sit at the table?” Katarina beamed at her young daughter, who nodded enthusiastically and grabbed Sekhmet by the hand, proceeding to guide her to the dining table.

The suddenness of it all caught Sekhmet entirely by surprise, and if she’d been shellshocked before, she seemed even more baffled now. She mouthed wordlessly for a moment at the whirlwind of action before being led off towards the other side of the room by a small hand, following docilely and without protest. “My name’s Mary, and my brother’s name is Raphael,” the young girl holding her hand babbled happily, not seeming to mind the fact that she was talking to a complete stranger. “Daddy’s outside feeding the cows, but he’ll be back home soon.” Sekhmet soon found herself in front of a small but sturdy dining room table, where it seemed most of the meals were held. “This is where all of our guests sit,” Mary announced, bouncing up and down by a seat at the end of the table, “and this seat is mine!” She seemed more than happy to be entertaining a guest, that was for sure.

“Th-thank you,” Sekhmet managed to stammer, which in turn, elicited a question from her tiny hostess. “Why does your voice sound funny like that? Do you come from a different town?” At that moment, Katarina walked in as well, laughing lightly at her daughter. “Honey, we don’t just call peoples’ voices ‘funny’. I’m curious too though, where are you from, Sekhmet? It seems like you’re a long way from home out here.” The gray eyes were curious as they lit on her face. “Oh…well, I’m from the desert,” Sekhmet replied. It was the most honest answer she could give without having to launch into an overly-complicated explanation. Plus, from what her friend at the bookstore had told her, the desert-lands around here were quite similar to her own homeland, so she figured that was her best bet.

“Ooooh, the desert, the desert! Mommy, can we go to the desert to see?” Mary’s voice seemed to grow progressively higher-pitched the more excited she got. Her brother, Raphael, had since entered the room as well behind his mother and stood near the back wall of the kitchen, still quietly watching the stranger. “Maybe one day, dear,” Katarina replied, patting her daughter affectionately on the head. “But right now, I need you and your brother to help set the table. Don’t we want everything to be ready when daddy comes home?” The little girl nodded vigorously in reply to the question and immediately dashed over to a drawer from which she removed utensils to lay the table with.
