Three Women [P][M:E]

Postby HappyHappyHierophant » 11/14/2015 9:02 PM

Harvest long over, the fields that had once been bountiful of colorful ears of corn stood bare with graying stalks. Frost, but not snow, had been the only introduction to the harsh winter to come so far. All that seemed to distinguish the land for miles was a vast expanse of black earth reaching towards the horizon, and steely gray of a thick layer of clouds stretching back as some kind of inverted reflection.

Three women and one folded wheelchair occupied a tiny powder blue sedan, that glided over a dirt road that parted the expanse of earth. The youngest of the women squinted at the horizon instinctively, and sure enough, a tiny white house appeared in the distance, so bleak against the landscape that even the single apple tree in the yard and a slanted tin mailbox were clear, at least to two of the women, even at this distance.

From far up in the sky, it might have hypnotizing in its simplicity, this small blue particle in a field of black propelling itself gently forward to converge with the white particle. One point, returning to another; and it must have been reflected over and over across the universe and in nature on that day.

But within the car, the low humming was suddenly interrupted by a muted grinding sound, and the youngest woman looked confused around herself, as if waking from this black and steel gray dream.

"Wrong gear," a low and raspy voice said flatly, coming from the middle-aged woman, the right side of her body folded against the window.

"Oh," the youngest women said, so quietly it barely left her lips. It was more for herself than as a response, and it was ignored by the other two women, one out of apathy, the other out of ignorance.

The powder blue sedan finally pulled into the driveway of the no longer tiny white house in the distance. It was in fact, quite a large house, two stories and a wrap-around porch, white clapboards and double arched windows. For a while now, it was still full of furniture and knick-knacks and folksy little crafts, but unoccupied. The condition of the eldest woman, now in the back seat, had deteriorated, and she now instead stayed in a large white building with square little windows in the next town over that wasn't too unlike the white house from far enough away.

In the time since, the white house had stood obediently, despite how absurd it looked in this empty black expanse. The eldest woman stared in the other direction, despondent.

"Get her wheelchair," the middle-aged woman said with a wave of her hand at the youngest woman. She obeyed in silence, struggling with it at one door, while bringing it in a semicircle around the middle-aged woman, who was taking out bags of groceries, to the other. In a place in her mind she would never admit, she was pondering hollowly about the properties of gravity, and whether her life consisted completely of orbiting around or towards these two other women when she was around them. But she knew, somewhere even deeper in her subconscious, how lost she would be without them, and their commands and duties.

The setting sun was glaring against the car window, making it more difficult for the youngest woman to check if the eldest woman was leaning too hard on the car door before she opened it. Unbeknownst to her, the eldest lady stared back her without recognition, her eyebrows furling and unfurling.

A ramp had been installed for the house, just two wide unpainted planks of woods nailed at a certain width over the stairs to the porch. The youngest woman paused for a minute pushing the eldest up the stairs, realigning the chair and adjusting her head. She thought about the Myth of Sisyphus for a brief second and immediately regretted it. She then wondered quietly if the eldest woman had ever thought of the same in her clearer days, seeing doctor after doctor with her and contemplating death.

There was a large wooden hutch filled with blue and white china that she maneuvered the chair around and she brought it around to the table. She moved a chair to the wall and position the eldest at the head of the table, as it had been before she left. The eldest woman brought her hand to the table and felt it for a minute and murmurred something.

"What was that?" the youngest women called back, surprising herself in that, for a moment, she had truly expected her to respond.

The middle-aged woman brought in groceries setting them on the table. The youngest woman let water run over her hands as she stared out the window back at the black and steel gray expanse.

"What are you looking at?" the middle-aged woman called to her, half out genuine curiosity, half out of irritation. She plugged in the refrigerator and shoved groceries inside, amidst harsh rustles of the paper bag.

"I... I don't know," the youngest woman said in full confession.

"We're going to have to blend her food." The woman took out a new blender out of one of the bags and she placed it on the counter, looking alien in an antique kitchen. The youngest woman had shut off the water and placed a rainbow of vegetables on the counter to be washed.

"Yes." The youngest woman said, wiping her hands on fraying dish towel. The eldest woman murmured something again in the other room.

"So how has school been going?" the middle-aged lady called back at the youngest as she walked back to the other room. The youngest was studying somewhere relatively prestigious, which the middle-aged was vastly proud of, but, like the eldest, valued modesty above all other things and kept it subdued.

"Uh, good," the youngest said. The eldest was now silent, staring out at the expanse through one of the double-arched windows with equal fervor to the youngest. The youngest thought about her day. She had been with her friends in their apartment. It was meant to be a small goodbye session, which was very silly as they would only be gone for a week. But where they would at they would typically either be at the library cursing as they tried to finish essays or out and about they had to save for driving, and it seemed to be all they could do in a free afternoon.

The session had made her feel oddly about the holiday for the first time. She had pulled in with her car loaded, as their apartment complex had a generous parking lot, to spend a few hours. They had been sitting around the table themselves, like some sort of mock-up of the holiday, talking about absolutely nothing at all with take out containers stacked on top of textbooks and front of them and the television running in the background.

It was idle time. But for some reason, as re-runs ran on the television and banter rose and fell, she had looked out the window and realized that she was staring directly west, where she would be picking the middle-aged woman up and the eldest after that. She realized the road was more or less a clear shot aligning both of them. And suddenly she had felt some terrible ache for them in her heart as if it was lurching towards both of them, which was inexplicable to her.

Unbeknownst to the youngest, the middle aged lady had felt something similar. She ran a small shop in a posh avenue, selling clothes and soaps and other somewhat frivolous things that a middle-aged woman such as herself was supposed to like. It had started as a simple general store her husband and inherited, but after his early death, the middle-aged woman had maneuvered it shrewdly as the neighborhood around it continued to change, making a decent penny as a result.

She had at the time just got off the phone confirming plans with the youngest, and had began carefully taking out new inventory. One box with several bars of craft soap had left an overwhelming scent of lavender upon opening and it dissipated throughout the room. As she waved her hands, she thought of a summer when she had brought the youngest to meet the eldest. The evening after came upon a field filled with tall blooms of fresh lavender, and the youngest had placed her hands on the window. She watched as the youngest watched with such awe, that eldest recommending they pull over, and they watched as the youngest had already darted out of the car to chase and hold the blooms, twirling among them in the sunlight. It had been such a serene and happy sight, and she wondered to herself whether she should have sought more of those times, before they each had grown old in their own respects and become so busy.

The middle aged woman went to the other room, where the youngest was knelt on one side of the eldest. She quietly lowered herself on the other side. Kneeling like this on the floor was unusual for her, but for some reason this time it felt comfortable. The youngest pondered gravity again, and wondered if it was not that she would orbit, but was drawn. The middle-aged rubbed her hands, still scented lightly with lavender.

They sat there for more than a few minutes, remembering how they had felt earlier that day, but not bothering to say anything about it. Whether the eldest had felt the same was a mystery that had occured to both of them.

The eldest looked calmly out at the vast expanse of the black and steel gray. And the other two women looked out with her, not knowing, nor caring, exactly what it was they were looking at.
