On Death's Door (Self) L

Postby Sarah » 06/25/2016 2:41 PM

Arcella landed softly at the entrance to the farm. She folded her great black and yellow wings and awaited her escort. It was rare for a seraph to be seen anywhere near the reapers, but desperate times called for desperate measures. While she waited she smoothed down her blouse and adjusted her skirt. The flight had messed up her hair a bit and so she did what she could with her fingers to untangle it.

Normally she would have just taken a door, but the reapers were so strong and paranoid that she couldn’t open a door anywhere in the farmlands. It wasn’t like they didn’t know she was coming. Things would have been a lot easier if they had just opened a door for her. They so hated the seraphim, and they certainly weren’t happy about meeting her today. Hopefully they wouldn’t make her wait much longer.

Hours passed and the sun reached its peak and began its descent before anyone showed up. Arcella just waited patiently where she had been told to. She had waited for worse for longer before. In the distance she finally saw two figures exit one of the buildings. Arcella had wondered where everyone had been hiding. She’d heard that the farm was constantly busy with reapers training in the fields. It was irresponsible for them to just hole up because they had an unwanted visitor.

Azuriel - - - Misiel

The two approached at their own pace. They weren’t in any more of a hurry now than they were hours ago. The two were perfect beings. Tall, muscular, beautiful in the most haunting way. Their eyes were like daggers that pierced right into the soul of whatever they looked at. They walked in a way that radiated power and danger.

“They weren’t kidding,” Misiel said in wonder. “You really will just stand around all day if that’s what your orders are,” she said.

“Doesn’t it make you upset?” Azuriel asked. “Your time has been wasted, all you’ve done is stand out here and take it,” he said.

“Who are you?” Arcella asked politely. She wasn’t expecting this. Reapers were often beautiful in human form but always in some extreme. The council had told her that a body builder and an old woman would be meeting her. These two were too perfect, it almost scared her.

“Well I’m Azuriel, and this is Misiel,” Azuriel said pointing to herself and then Misiel.

Arcella was actually shocked by this. “Those are very traditional Seraphim names,” she commented.

The two women nodded in unison. “Of course they are. Jarbu thought it would be best if we kept the names of the sacrificed,” Misiel said.

Jabru? The god of death? What in the hell was going on here? Arcella wondered what she should do. She had a hunch on what these women might be, but she didn’t want to say anything. What they were was blasphemous and not tolerated in the slightest.

“Can you just let me do what I came here to do?” Arcella said after an awkward pause.

“Of course,” Misiel piped up happily. “Just follow us,” She said.

“How was your trip?” Azuriel asked. “I hope it wasn’t too much of a hassle,” She said.

At least they knew how to fake courtesy. Arcella hadn’t had the pleasure of working with many reapers, but she had been told they weren’t a very inviting bunch. Maybe these two could change their ways. “It was fine. A little long of a flight, but I guess that’s what happens when security is key,” she said. “How about you two? How do you like it out here?” she asked.

“It’s great out here. Everyone is so friendly and we get to learn so much every day,” Misiel said.

“They’ve been very accommodating. We didn’t know up from down when we got here and they’ve made our whole world change for the better,” Azuriel agreed.

“That’s good to hear,” Arcella said.

“Yeah and none of your business,” Masiel snapped. “What happens here and what we think of it does nothing for you or your council,” she hissed. “No matter what you try to do, meet with us, spy on us, whatever plans you have, they will mean nothing to your council,” she said.

“It’s true,” Azuriel said. “You Seraphim hate that we are so powerful and so secretive. You nosy assholes want everything you can get your grubby hands on, but we are off limits,” Azuriel said harshly. “This is our place and we have our own gods. We will do what we like,” She said.

Arcella reeled at their sudden change of attitude. “I thought we were getting along just fine,” she said calmly. “What happened to cause this?” she asked.

Misiel sneered at the seraph. “You’re so fake. Does it hurt to be so blaringly fake?” she asked.

“Well… no? I was trained to act like this,” Arcella said. “This is the way of a proper Seraph,” she said.

“No hard feelings hmm?” Azuriel said. “We’ll just let you have you meeting and then we can all go on our merry way,” she said.

Arcella was frustrated that she had no idea what was going on, and that there were two hybrids right next to her. The council had long called them abominations, and they were supposed to all be hunted to extinction. Why were these two still holding physical forms? She knew why, she’d been on the panel that had tried the death god Jabru.

“Fine! You want the backstory? I’ll tell it to you,” Jabru snarled. How had he gotten here? As he looked around him he saw that question in the eyes of every council member. He was in the center of the circle and they sat around him. Their eyes telling him everything he could ever want to know. Oh how foolish they were for going against a god, for going against him. His warriors were what they needed to win their stupid war, and they had the brass to come after him. The soft gold that surrounded him was almost blinding to his eyes that were used the natural lighting of Evelon, or the silver lighting of his own vault.

“The gods had a problem. I’m sure that’s what you’ll have your little scribes record when this is over. That it was the gods who had the problem. That’s not true, you say this for your own image. The gods have no problems, we do not care what befalls our slaves,” Jabru began harshly. “The council had a problem: Their seraphim were being bested by demons and their most powerful warriors, the reapers, were not being sent to help,” he said. “But they are not your warriors, they are mine, and they are not warriors,” he clarified.
