"You brought me to... a farm." There was a distinct lack of joy in Inspire's voice as she came to that realization.

"Isn't it beautiful?" Cider chimed in, taking a deep breath of the warm country air.

"I think you and I have different definitions for that term," she responded sourly. This was not what she had imagined when Cider said that they were going out for the weekend. In her version, there was much more shopping and fine dining and far less... mud.

"I know this ain't what you were expectin'," Cider said softly, "but I really think that you'll like it if ya just give it a chance."

Inspire paused and her face scrunched up into an embarrassed frown. What was she doing? She should be more appreciative of Cider's efforts. Even if it wasn't what she thought it would be, her friend was very kind to take her on this trip.

"You're right," Inspire said sheepishly. "I'd love to see what you have planned."

"That's the spirit!" Cider slapped Inspire on the back and cheerfully stomped forward toward the gate. Inspire reluctantly followed her, eyes glued to the ground the entire time so she didn't step in anything.

"Watch where yer goin'!" Cider warned, holding out an arm to stop Inspire from smacking into a fence post. This was going to be even tougher than she thought...

"What if I step in something?" Inspire whined.

"Then ya hose your boots off like everyone else." Cider shook her head as she opened the gate. Sometimes she wished she could shake some sense into her friend.

"Ah! What is that?" Inspire jumped back immediately upon stepping past the gate. A small fluffy thing awkwardly waddling in their direction.

"It's just a chicken."

"Oh, of course it is..." Inspire blushed a little. How silly of her not to recognize a chicken. Though she'd never seen one in person before.

She pulled a camera out of her bag and popped the lens cap off. Then she leaned down and tried to focus her shot. She wasn't having much luck, however, as the chicken didn't like staying still for the camera.

'Now that's the Inspire I know,' Cider thought to herself. She was torn between bursting out laughing and actually helping out.

"Hold... still!" Inspire said, stumbling around a bit to try and line up her picture.

"Here," Cider said, stifling a laugh. She grabbed some seed from a nearby bucket and threw it at the ground. The chicken stopped dead and whipped around to peck at it. Inspire hastily snapped as many pictures as she could, hoping that some of them would come out right.

Suddenly, there were many chickens, all of them scrambling around to get some of the seed. They had come from all around to slam their beaks repeatedly at the ground. One of them jump-flew right at Inspire, who didn't see it coming. It bounced harmlessly off her side and tumbled to the ground. She let out a terrified screech, causing the chickens to scatter for just a moment before they all flooded back again.

"Let's get out of here," Cider managed to say through her laughter. Inspire frowned heavily at her, but she didn't disagree. She scrambled backwards as quickly as possible while still managing to avoid stepping on any birds.

"Goodness," she panted, out of breath. "They're not very smart, are they?" The two of them both started laughing. What a truth that was.

"There's plenty more to see where that came from," Cider said, catching her breath. "C'mon, I got somethin' to show ya."

They headed down the well worn dirt path together. Inspire kept glancing back and forth between straight ahead and down at her feet. She still didn't want to end up in a mud puddle... or worse, but she also had to keep an eye on where they were going. This place was dangerous!

"Here it is," Cider said, stopping in front of a building. Inspire tilted her head. It was just a barn. Now, she may not be the most farm savvy person out there, but she knew what a barn was.

"It's inside," she continued, just as Inspire was about to ask what was going on. She slipped in past the door which was cracked open and gestured for Inspire to follow.

"It's dark in here," Inspire remarked, looking around. There was some light trickling in, but not much.

"Shh," Cider warned. She was crouched down at the other side of the barn, and she beckoned Inspire over. "Look," she whispered.

Inspire crept over and crouched down next to Cider. She turned to look in the same direction, and saw ... a pile of straw? Wait. There was something laying there. It was a dog! How sweet. She was really more of a cat person, though.

"Look closer," Cider whispered. Inspire did as she was told and leaned in closer. She didn't want to touch a strange animal, but she also couldn't see very well in the dark. There was something wiggling around. Actually a few something. Wait was it...

"Puppies!" Inspire said, a little too loudly. The mother dog shifted her weight and glared at her. "Oh, I'm sorry," she returned to a whisper.

"They're so... wiggly," Inspire said with a tiny giggle.

"Yea, they're still pretty young. Can't even see yet."

"Alright, I'm sure momma here wants to sleep. Let's get outta here and I'll show you what we really came for. It's even better." Better than puppies? Now she was really excited! What could be better than puppies?

The girls made their way through the farm and past various barns. Various animals wandered past, and occasionally Inspire managed to snap a decent photo of one. She also stopped to take photos of old farm equipment and anything else she considered 'rustic.' Cider didn't really understand that, but she was happy that Inspire seemed so excited about it.

"Hold yer nose, we're about to pass by the pigs," Cider said with a laugh. Inspire wasn't sure whether she was joking or not, but she did so anyway. It was better to be safe than sorry.

Well, she wasn't lying about the pigs. Though to be honest, they didn't really smell any worse than the rest of the place. Perhaps that was an unfair stereotype after all. As they passed, a tiny piglet ran away from the others and came up to them. It stuck its little nose through the fence in an attempt to get closer to them.

"Awwwww," Inspire cooed. Pigs were way cuter than they were made out to be. She smiled warmly and snapped a few photos of the little guy.

"Wanna hold him?" Cider asked, already leaning over the fence to grab the piglet.

"Oh, no, I couldn't," Inspire said, taking a step back. Okay, he was cute, but he was still dirty and... wriggly.

"Are you sure? Look at his widdle faaace," Cider held him out closer to her.

"How about I pet him, but you hold him," Inspire suggested. She tentatively reached out and patted him on the head like she would a cat. She was surprised to find out that he was actually pretty soft.

When they were done playing with the piglet, Cider led them out into a big open field away from the buildings and equipment. It seemed like there wasn't anything there, so yet again, Inspire had no idea what to think. So far, all of Cider's surprises had been good ones, so she decided to wait it out.

"This way," Cider waved them along. They spent a few minutes crossing the field. Inspire was about to start complaining that her feet hurt when Cider stopped her to point at something.

"Oh my gosh!" Inspire squeaked when she saw it. "Horses!"

"Now ya gotta move slow, else ya might startle 'em," Cider cautioned. Then she dug some sugar cubes out of her pocket and pressed one into Inspire's palm. "Here, they'll definitely like ya if you offer 'em this. Just keep yer fingers flat, okay?"
