The sun was hot, as usual. It had just passed the highest point in the sky, making it close to the hottest part of the day. It was probably inadvisable to walk along black sand that had baking in the sun all day, but she knew that if she could just get down to where the water was crashing into the shore she might be able to avoid burned pawpads. As it was, she was slowly sweltered to death in the shade. Risking a burn didn't seem quite so crazy when the humidity alone made her feel like passing out.

Having giant, bat-like ears would be a whole hell of a lot more helpful in wicking away the heat if it had been dry instead of so damn humid.

With a huff, the fenling climbed to her tiny feet and stared at the ocean as if it were issuing a challenge. One deep breath to steady herself and she was off like a shot, racing across sweltering black sand to the cooling waves lying just beyond. It took a moment for the pain to register, but pretty soon her run started to look more like a hop as she yelped her way down that final stretch before she could throw herself face-first into the lapping tide.

She didn't waste any time. Once the ground wasn't conspiring against her, she flopped right down on the wet sand to roll it all over her body. She didn't give a damn how stupid she must look with four legs dangling in the air and black sand coating her fur, she was on a mission. A mission to cool down.

It was hot.

Everyone on the coast was thinking it, and right now, he was living it. Nimbus was not particularly well adapted to heat with his fluffy tail and unusually pale skin. It was so unpleasant for him that he pulled his sleeves up nearly to his elbows, certainly the most skin he had shown in a long time. His furry hybrid ears flopped down at the side of his head, drooping like wilting leaves.

Nimbus breathed a sigh of relief as the ocean came into view. The crisp, sparkling blue water was a very welcome sight. No matter how happy he was, it couldn't top the excitement of his playful pink Likuta. She danced on her toes, wiggled her tail, and flexed her spines. Meu could not wait to get in the water! She dashed ahead, leaping out of the grass and onto the start of the beach. She immediately regretted that decision, of course, and quickly stumbled back to where the ground didn't burn her paws.

"Oh! Are you okay?" Nimbus squatted down and inspected her paws as much as she would allow. There didn't seem to be any serious damage, but she had learned a harsh lesson nonetheless. "I guess we won't be swimming today," he said with a sigh. Meu tugged at his pant leg and put on her most pathetic face.

"Oh come on, no, I can't," he insisted, clearly losing the argument he was having with himself. "Okay, but only because I owe you one." Nimbus reached down and awkwardly lifted Meu up, trying his best to avoid her spines. He waddled across the beach with her wiggling around in his arms. As they got closer to the rolling tide, Meu was having more and more trouble staying put. Eventually, she kicked off of his chest and launched herself into the water.

"Oi!" he squeaked as he tumbled to the ground from the force of her leap. He quickly scrambled back to his feet, not even registering how hot the sand was against his bare skin. Once he straightened himself out, he noticed something flailing around in the tide. He was immediately overcome with concern and hurried over to take a look.

"Hey sweetie, are you alright?" He crouched down and held out his hand to the creature flopping around in the surf. Meu circled around and swam up near them, staring intently at the situation. She was ready to protect him if anything went wrong.

Ah! The sand might be black and hot and inhospitable, but once the water was soaked into it it could become a stanch ally against the heat. The fenling rolled to her heart's content, covering her entire body in a thick coating of black, so much so that the red of her fur was barely visible anymore! It was around this time that her rather large ears suddenly alerted her to someone approaching. And, considering how she had barely spent any time in this area at all, it was clear that it was someone she did not know.

With a high-pitched yelp, she quickly scrambled back onto delicate feet, staring up at the, um, well, who was this? Some sort of hybrid? He, if it was a he, had weird ears and a weird tail and was rather pale. Ill suited to the weather, in her opinion. He also came here with a friend, she noticed something keeping a watch on her, causing her to tilt her own ears back and give a warbling growl in warning. They wouldn't like messing with her if they wanted trouble!

Any semblance of intimidation was quickly squashed, however, when she suddenly sneezed. Then sneezed again. Shoot. All that sand was coming back to bite her. She quickly shook it off, ridding herself of her protective layer against the sun, and likely coating the stranger in it instead. Serves him right for sneaking up on her.

The poor thing looked confused and hurt. Nimbus' face wrinkled up with concern. All he could think about was what he could do to help her. She was obviously afraid of him, given her stance and the growling. It was a reaction he was far too used to by now. After all, wild creatures didn't often take kindly to a stranger trying to feed and pet them. For some reason only he would understand, he kept trying to do it anyway, and he usually succeeded.

"It's..." was all he managed to get out before she sneezed, spraying him with sand. He couldn't help but to smile and let out the first peep of a giggle. No matter how big and terrifying a creature was, they always looked cute when they sneezed. He didn't even seem to mind the fact that he was now more covered in black sand than ever.

Meu did not at all seem happy about this exchange. She was watching Nimbus intently, looking for any hint that he was ready to play rough. When the red fox sneezed, she tensed, flexing the extremely venemous spines along her back. Nimbus gave her a subtle signal to stay put, and she reluctantly obeyed.

"It's okay, sweetie," he cooed in his most welcoming voice. He slowly and cautiously reached into his pocket and pulled out some fish jerky. Meu perked up, staring greedily at the food in his hand. It was intended for her, after all. He apologized to her in his mind and offered it to the little fox. "You want some? Yum yum."

Laughter, huh? Well, that was one way to deal with getting covered in sand by an adorable fox. With that, Skylark decided that this guy wasn't too bad, even if he did look like a wonky crossbreeding experiment into hybridization. She felt like she could trust someone who'd look at a wild animal and seemingly try to help it, even taking humor out of the situation when it didn't go quite his way.

His companion, on the other paw, didn't seem to warming up to her nearly so quickly. She kept an ear in the sea critter's direction, all too aware that those thick spins could likely piece her frankly outrageous amounts of fluff if aimed correctly.

But, lucky for her, this guy really wanted to be on her good side. She did her best to ignore the grumpy sea puppy once jerky was on the table. It was kinda demeaning to be baby talked to, but that didn't stop her from daintily stepping forward to carefully secure a piece of jerky between her teeth, pausing and staring at at him to make sure he was actually going to let go before she darted off to the side, away from the both of them so she could eat in relative peace.

Her eyes automatically went to the Likuta, studying her with mistrust, half expecting that she would make a bid for the treat herself. Her eyes darted from her to him and back again while she gulped down the jerky in two bites. Food safe in her belly, she promptly shook herself off one more time before sitting her butt down in the surf, wondering what they'd do next.

"There we go," Nimbus said softly. He was pleased that she took the treat, even if she did snap it up. It took a lot of guts to grab food from a stranger's hand. She was either very hungry or trusted him enough to get that close. He was going to hope it was the latter, as she didn't show any signs of being malnourished.

Meu was not pleased that this strange fluffball was getting snacks and she was not. She scrunched up her nose in irritation. She was conflicted: she could either keep warning the fluff to back off, or she could be cute to get treats. Being cute for treats was her default gambit. Eventually, she gave in, and opted for cute. Her spines relaxed as she placed her front paws on his leg and looked up at him with her big blue eyes.

"Oh, of course you want one, too," Nimbus said with a short 'tuh' of a laugh. He rubbed her chin with her free hand, but her attention was fixated on that jerky. He rolled his eyes and tossed a piece for her. She leaped into the air with surprising grace and snapped up the little trinket as quickly as she could. She gave the fox a smug look and licked her lips.

"This is our friend, Meu. Friend. You have to be nice to her okay?" Nimbus wasn't sure she understood, but she had stopped growling. That was a plus.

"What do you say, Little Red, would you like a scrach?" Nimbus held his hand out and reached toward her. He left a gap so that she could close it if she wanted. If she didn't, then he always had a few more fish in his hand to convince her otherwise. If Meu didn't tackle him and take them first, that is.
