Lassendira -- 452c66, Zaria -- 4d155d

"Are we almost there, Mama?" a smaller Soveris asked, her wings beating at least twice for every one of the larger Soveris's wing-beats.  The crimson-winged Soveris smiled as she looked back over her shoulder at the smaller Soveris, wings still beating in flight.

"Almost, Zaria," Lassendira said, beginning to angle herself downwards.  "You're excited to come out here, aren't you?" she asked.

"Of course!" the little Soveris chirped, following her mother's movements.  "It's the ocean!  It's my first time being anywhere other than our roost in the mountains!"

"You know it's never my intent to keep you cooped up in the mountains, Zaria," Lassendira said, laughing.  "This has just been the first time it's been ideal weather to fly to the beach." Both Soveris landed in a more wooded area, walking the rest of the way to the sands.  When Zaria saw the black sands and the ocean, she squealed and made to dash for the sand.

"Zaria, be careful; that's--"

"Hoooooooooooooooooot!" Zaria keened, jumping in the air and beating her wings anxiously, her feet waving wildly.

It was a beautiful day out. Ouranos took in a deep breath of the warm, fresh air and sighed, content. For once, the weather was reminiscent of that of his home, although arguably more pleasant – after all, the desert could be an unbearably hot and arid environment. Sure, he would have been alright with the temperature being a few degrees warmer, but he wasn’t about to complain since it was still fathoms better than the snow that had been falling just a few days ago.

It was rather odd, being on his own for this long. Sekhmet had taken to wandering on her own for longer and longer periods at a time, and so far, this was her longest stint yet. It seemed she’d taken a greater interest in the civilization in this world, while he was content to drink in the peace and solitude of the nature around him yet. After all, having been raised in rooms and halls, all but trapped in a castle for the better part of his youth, this change from a lifestyle of royalty was stark, yet at the same time, welcome. For once in his life, he felt free of the duties and responsibilities which had been pushed upon him along with his bloodline, and he was beginning to discover just how sweet true autonomy really was.

Like his companion, he’d taken to wandering farther and farther from the cave which they called ‘home’ (in the loosest sense of the term). Even after all this time, it still remained more of a shelter than an abode, but their options were somewhat few and far between. While Sekhmet made her way into the towns and cities close to the woods where they were currently staying, Ouranos chose to wander farther away from them, deeper into the wilderness, and he was surprised to find that the trees didn’t continue to thicken forever. In some places, it opened up into grassy meadows and in others, burbling creeks and streams. Each day, he grew bolder in his explorations, and each day, there was always something new to see.

Today, Ouranos discovered the ocean for the first time. It started as a faint rushing sound in his ears as he drifted casually along on the warm breeze, letting the wind carry him where it pleased. He thought that perhaps it was a figment of his imagination at first, or perhaps just the rush of the wind. However, the further he flew, the louder it seemed to grow. In the distance, he could just make out an odd twinkling on the horizon, as if the sun’s rays were glinting off of some sort of uneven, reflective surface. The curious thing was, it seemed to span the entire length of the horizon. Finally drawing upon the new motivation of curiosity, he began to beat his wings more purposefully, propelling himself towards this oddity in the distance. Of all the new places and things he’d discovered in the past few weeks, this certainly seemed like the grandest one yet.

"Now, Zaria, I did try to warn you that the sand would be hot," Lassendira said with a small chuckle behind her throat.  The younger Soveris cast a rueful gaze to the older one, finally landing on the sand closer to the water.  Lassendira couldn't help but smile, jumping into the air and flying over the sand to land in the water near Zaria, who was still splashing happily.

"This is fun, Mama!" Zaria said, splashing her front legs in the water.  Lassendira smiled happily as she shook her feathers slightly, attempting to get any excess sea water out of her feathers.

Then, she looked up.

It seemed to be just a speck in the distance, but whatever it was (or, perhaps, whomever, Lassendira would reflect after a few seconds more), it was approaching rather fast.  It was a few minutes more before Lassendira could discern that the speck she'd seen before was, indeed, another creature--and one that she hoped was familiar.

"Mama?" Zaria asked, having noticed that her mother was looking up at the sky.  Lassendira, however, did not respond; instead, she leapt into the air, inclining in a spiraling pattern.

"Could it be?" she asked herself, training her gaze on the approaching figure.

As Ouranos drew closer to the landmark which had caught his interest, it began to become abundantly clear that whatever it was was much grander in scale than he could have ever imagined. What could possibly be so big? He pondered to himself in flight as his wings propelled him closer. Even mountains, although vast, were nowhere near as far-reaching as this. He strained his eyes, trying to make out some distinguishing factor in the endless twinkling, but to no avail. It was as if the land itself had turned into a sheet of diamond...but that couldn't be right, could it?

Slowly, the trees below him began to recede and give way to grass and smaller shrubs, revealing startlingly dark soil. It was more black than it was brown, but for Ouranos, it was currently a small drop in the bucket of things that surprised him. Now that he was only a mile or so away from the shore, he could make out movement - indeed, the entire expanse seemed to be one shimmering, dancing sheet. If he didn't know any better, he'd think that it was all water, but how silly was that? Where could that much water even come from? He'd seen lakes and ponds in the past, but nothing of this magnitude, so therefore, he was rather hesitant to accept even his own suspicions.

Suddenly, he became aware of a form ascending from near the edge of the ocean (not that he recognized it as such) and making its way towards him. That one he did recognize, and his gaze (once he managed to pull it away from the water ahead of him) registered it as another Soveris. He blinked in surprise - this was the first time in a very, very long time that he'd seen another Soveris apart from Sekhmet. In fact, since he'd arrived here, he'd only ever met one other of his kind, and it had come as a pleasant surprise, to see that there were others of his species here in this alien world. "Lassendira?" The question was more to himself than to the approaching figure - he thought the flash of lavender and maroon feathers in the sun looked familiar, but he didn't want to hope against hope. It took only a few more moments for him to draw close enough to pick out with certainty the familiar plumage and markings, and he powered himself towards her with newfound excitement, the ocean momentarily forgotten. "Lassendira!"

"Lassendira!"

When the voice reached her, Lassendira's orange eyes both brightened and widened as she began to fly towards the figure that she now knew she recognized.  He had recognized her, and that had given her reason to hope  against the odds that she would see him again.  Zaria leapt up from the water, although her ascent would be slower than her mother's was.  Before long, Lassendira was at a position where she could speak to Ouranos without needing to shout to be heard.

"Ouranos!" she called, her voice elated.  "I... it's been a long time, hasn't it?" she asked, a sheepish smile on her beak (or, at least, as sheepish a smile as one with a beak could have).

"Mama?" Zaria piped up, looking at the other Soveris curiously.  She had to beat her wings a few more times than Lassendira to maintain her position, but she maintained her position, in the air above the water.

"How have you been?" Lassendira asked before turning her attention to Zaria, offering a smile.  "Zaria, do you remember the other Soveris I told you I'd met before?  Well, this is him."

Ouranos' hopes lifted higher as recognition dawned on the other Soveris (or at least confirmation of her suspicions), and he watched as she began to make a beeline towards him. It took only a few seconds for them to meet in the middle, and as he reached her, he pulled up short, beating his wings regularly to keep him aloft in place. His first instinct was to glance over her, checking to make sure that she was healthy and safe (he'd always been the protective sort, and it sometimes drove Sekhmet up a wall since she liked her independence), and when he was satisfied that she was, he returned her smile, his turning out more like a goofy grin.

"It's so good to see you again!" Before today, he'd thought that he'd never see Lassendira again. Or at least, he'd feared it, but he'd known better than to hope for something that was entirely unlikely. After all, it was a big world out there. But seeing her again brought back the memories of the day he'd gotten to spend with her, and that was enough to keep the grin on his face. "It has been a long time indeed," he agreed, nodding his head vehemently. "Too long, if you ask me. But I've been good! Nothing too terribly exciting has happened since we last met, but I suppose I can't complain, in the grand scheme of things. How about you?"

It was then that his gaze caught on another figure, rising more slowly to join the first. It was another Soveris (which in itself was a surprise, especially since Lassendira hadn't mentioned a companion the last time they'd met), but she was distinctly smaller than Lassendira was. Ouranos' gaze was curious - the two females looked distinctly similar to some degree, yet different at the same time. For some reason, he had the strangest feeling of deja vu, but he quickly dismissed it, as there was no way he could have met this young Soveris in the past. "And who might this lovely young lady be?" he asked, offering Zaria a friendly smile as well. "Apparently you know more about me than I do about you," he added with a chuckle.

"I've been quite well," Lassendira said, her smile bright.  "Things have been calm since we met--I had to withdraw from the last Tournament of the Sky-Dancers at the last minute because... well," Lassendira paused here, chuckling as she indicated Zaria.  If she had a human form that she used, and if she were in that form, she would be biting her lip nervously before continuing to speak.

"My name's Zaria," Zaria said, her orangeish-gold eyes gleaming.  "Mama, you didn't tell me that he looked kinda like me," she said, turning to Lassendira with both curious and accusatory eyes.  Lassendira offered a nervous chuckle before she drew in a breath, turning to look at Ouranos again.

"Zaria is my--er, rather... our--daughter," Lassendira said in an almost hurried voice.  How would he respond to that?

Ouranos' grin faltered for a moment when Lassendira told him that she'd withdrawn from the tournament which they'd spent so long speaking about. He'd really thought that she'd stood a good chance of winning (albeit he'd never seen a tournament here in this world, but he still knew talent when he saw it), and of finding a personal coach as well, on top of that. He wondered what could possibly have caused someone who had been so deeply passionate about winning that competition to decide to withdraw. Was it nerves? An injury? His mind raced as it reached all of the worst possible scenarios, and he found himself fretting silently. "That sounds like it was a travesty," he finally managed, his voice appropriately tragic in tone, for he genuinely thought that it was a shame that she hadn't competed. Perhaps she was just waiting a little longer to get more practice in before entering.

However, before he had a chance to inquire as to the reasoning behind her withdrawal, his thought process was interrupted by the higher-pitched voice of the younger Soveris. "Hi, Zaria. My name is Ouranos." While he grinned back at her, he couldn't help but wonder at what she had to say. Now that she mentioned it, she did kind of look like him...but also Lassendira at the same time. Odd.

And there was the bombshell. For a moment, Ouranos thought that his wings would stop beating in mid-air out of sheer shock. It took a moment for him to realize that he was gaping with the bottom half of his beak open as he stared between the two female Soveris. He was...a father? His beak shut with an audible 'snap' as he struggled to recompose himself. This hatchling was...his daughter? Looking at it from a completely objective third-person standpoint, it made entire sense, considering how perfect a blend of the two adults Zaria was, but it took a little while for Ouranos' mind to struggle to that conclusion. "Our...daughter?" he echoed faintly. "I'm a dad?" Poor Lassendira would have to bear with him for a moment until he got over the surprise of it all.

Lassendira offered a soft chuckle as what she said set in.  She had anticipated such a reaction, especially with how long it had been since they'd seen each other, but at least he was taking it... mostly well, from what she could tell.

"I wish I could have told you sooner," Lassendira said in an apologetic tone.  "Sangi and Blödhren hardly let me out of their sights when she was born because they had no idea--and they were afraid that Zaria might wander out of the cave and fall to her death."

"But I never did," Zaria said.  "In fact, Mama says that I'm a really good flier."

"You are, Zaria," Lassendira said, smiling.  "But, this conversation might be better continued on the ground--especially considering that I do owe you an apology, Ouranos; for... for not telling you any sooner, or trying to find you."

Ouranos seemed to visibly shake himself as Lassendira spoke up again, offering him some explanation as to how this momentous event had occurred without him being any the wiser. It seemed a rather...big thing that he'd completely missed, but he knew that there was no one really at fault here, and he definitely didn't hold it against Lassendira. He could only imagine how much more of a shock that must have been for her, even compared to his current state of surprise.

"It's alright," he managed, still in the process of finding his voice (and proper sentence structure) again. At her suggestion that they find some place on firm ground to talk, he nodded emphatically with a small, somewhat apologetic grin. Even for someone as even-keeled as he was, this news had unbalanced him a little, and her suggestion was probably a wise one. "The ground would probably be a good idea - I was always rather shabby at flying in place anyways," he said with a small laugh, gesturing with a foreclaw for her to lead the way. After all, he assumed that she knew the lay of the land much better than he did. "I'm glad that I happened to wander out this way of all directions today."

"I'm glad our paths crossed today, too," Lassendira said, indicating downward with her head as she began a downward spiral towards the black sands below.  "A word of caution: the sands here can be rather... hot.  Hotter than other sand, at least--it's black, so..." she trailed off here.  She remembered that he said that his original home was a desert, and her eyes widened as she asked, "Wait... is this the first time you've... seen the ocean, Ouranos?"

Zaria had already spiraled her way down to the sands below, landing a little lighter then when she had pranced out onto the sands before.  She looked up to the bigger Soveri, waiting for them to descend to the ground completely.  Lassendira did not take much longer to land, lighting on the black sands gently, and picking her feet up occasionally until her feet adjusted to the temperature of the sand beneath her claws.

Ouranos breathed a soft sigh of relief as they began to descend towards the sand - he hadn't been kidding when he'd said that he wasn't terribly used to hovering. Back at home in the desert, there were enough warm updrafts to drift on for days out in the open expanse, and he'd never had to worry much about working to stay in place in the air. Locking his wings open, he spiraled after the two females, slowly drawing closer to the dark sand.

Now that he'd had a chance to absorb everything that had happened within the rather eventful last few minutes, he remembered once again what he'd been staring at before Lassendira had shown up. Sand, he recognized, although he'd never before seen sand this dark, and he eyed it cautiously as he drew closer to the ground. However, even that seemed commonplace in comparison to the expanse which reached farther than the eye could see before him. "The ocean," he echoed, trying out the word for the first time in his life. "Is that what it's called? I've never seen so...so much water before in my life." His gaze was once again captured by the sparkling water as he tried to discern any kind of beginning, end, or depth to it. Beyond the shore, it seemed endless.

"Yes, this is my first time," he admitted, coming back to his senses just in time to keep from colliding into the ground (although he had to flap rather heavily to slow himself enough to manage a semi-graceful landing). Even little Zaria's landing put his to shame, and she was far younger than himself, but perhaps Ouranos could be allowed a little leeway, considering the amount of new information he'd just encountered. "Does it ever end?" He seemed entirely unfazed by the hot sands beneath his feet - if anything, they brought comfort, as they reminded him of the scorching sand he was so used to at home in the desert. Years of exposure made his feet immune to the sun-soaked heat, and he was free to devote his attention to his new surroundings.

"Yeah," Lassendira said in response to when he asked if that was what the expanse of water before them was called.  "There's... at least two oceans in Evelon.  This one is the Ree'ne Sea," she said, pointing to it with her beak.  "It... does eventually end, yeah.  Many, many miles away is the continent of Lambasita--and along with that, the Tuun Mountains, where we first met," she said, turning back to Ouranos.

Zaria's eyes twinkled as she said, "This is the longest trip that Mama and I have taken yet!  She insisted on finding a way to fly that would get us from dry land to dry land quicker, because once we started flying over the ocean, stopping wasn't really an option.  It was a long flight."

"And you slept for almost a day after we landed," Lassendira said, preening Zaria's head-feathers slightly.  The smaller Soveris gave a high-pitched chirp and danced away slightly, her eyes still as bright as they'd been before.

"Continent..." All of these new words he'd never heard before. Lassendira had provided him with enough information for him to at least divulge the meaning of the new vocabulary though, which he was thankful for. And to think, he thought he'd gotten lucky when he'd discovered that language in this world wouldn't be a barrier for him when in the end, it was his ignorance - though faultless - that was currently holding him back. But at the same time, there was a certain joy in being reminded that he didn't know everything about the world, and there were wonders as great as the ocean still out there to be discovered.

"And to think, of all the other people in the world that I could have happened upon, fate would have it be you again." He chuckled, turning a somewhat affectionate smile upon Lassendira. Indeed, he had grown quite fond of her in the short time they'd been together, and even in lieu of all these surprises, he was delighted to see her again. "You must really take after your mother indeed, to be such a strong flier so young. She's certainly much more talented than I could ever hope to be," he laughed as he addressed Zaria, still in the process of coming to terms with the fact that there was a part of him in her. He was startled by just how identical her golden eyes were to his own, and it was then that the facts really began to sink in. "So, how old are you now, Zaria?"

Lassendira returned an affectionate smile of her own to Ouranos, her eyes gleaming as she looked to Zaria, who had seated herself and was preening her wings when Ouranos addressed her.  When he inquired her age, she lowered her wings thoughtfully, tilting her head to the side.

"In terms of the humans who live in this world, I'm about seven to ten years old," Zaria said, her tail curling around her front leg.  "But I haven't even seen that many seasons... I've only seen three or four seasons so far," she said.

"When I realized that I was expecting, I realized that Zaria would be born about the same time as the Tournament," Lassendira said.  "She was born... about a year ago, if I recall properly.  I... don't know how our kind aged in your world, Ouranos," she added in an almost sheepish tone.

"What do you mean, 'in his world', Mama?" Zaria asked, looking from Lassendira to Ouranos curiously.

(-flails at trying to pin an age on Zaria/Soveris in general-)
Maybe I'm foolish, maybe I'm blind
Thinking I can see through this to see what's behind
Got no way to prove it, so maybe I'm lying
Take a look in the mirror, what do you see
Can you see it clearer, or are you deceived in what you believe?
Don't ask my opinion, don't ask me to lie
Then beg for forgiveness for making you cry
'cause I'm no prophet or Messiah
You should go looking somewhere higher

I'm only human, I make mistakes
I'm only human, I do what I can
I'm only human, that's all it takes to put the blame on me

Don't put the blame on me
