In contrast to the Dead Coast, Sa'fir Coast is jokingly referred to as the world's largest pepper deposit because of its black sand beaches. They attract tourists, who can enjoy the tropical landscape of Barakka without facing its harsh environments. (+2 Endurance)

Mirage [HUNT] [solo]

Postby Silver » 10/18/2015 8:59 AM

Finally it was quiet.

The black sand beaches were normally full of people, but he had managed to slip away into a less traveled portion of the shoreline. The rocky uneven ground was difficult to traverse, quickly putting off the typical beach goer. However, it was just perfect for what he wanted. There seemed to be no shortage of places to explore. The fact that it was also relatively peaceful and quiet here was a nice bonus.

Nimbus always loved the smell of the ocean. His tails flicked idly in the breeze as he watched the clouds float around overhead. It was all around such a lovely day. He hoped that was a good sign for things to come. When he was done staring absentmindedly at the sky, he looked down to find that his companion had disappeared. Where could she have gotten off to?

Nimbus didn't have to look far to find her bright pink body against black sand. The Likuta was standing next to a nearby pile of rocks, quickly searching through them. Every now and then she would pick one up in her paws and look at it only to reject it by throwing it aside. Eventually she found what she was apparently looking for, because she hugged it to her cheek and looked very pleased. Meu gently clasped the smooth rock in her mouth and ran back over to where Nimbus was standing.

"What do you have there?" he asked her warmly. She sat back on her hindquarters and displayed the rock in her outstretched front paws. "Can I see?" he asked, gingerly touching the stone.

When she didn't try to keep the stone from him, he took it from her and looked it over. To him it didn't look special in any way, but she seemed pleased with it so he tried to give it back. Meu dropped her paws to her sides, not reaching out to take the rock back. Nimbus tried showing it to her again, holding it out so she could retrieve it. Again she refused, this time making a grumbling sound of disapproval.

"You don't want it any more?" he asked, admittedly confused. Why had she spent so much time looking for a rock if she didn't even want it? Maybe she just wanted to show it to him or something. "Well, it was a very nice rock, Meu," he told her, not that he knew anything about rocks. He was a bit curious as to why she picked this particular rock, but he didn't spend too much time thinking about it.

Since Meu didn't seem to want it, Nimbus set the rock back down in the sand near his feet. Meu saw this and chirped loudly, snatching it up. 'Now you want it,' Nimbus thought to himself, but that he didn't say out loud. Not that she would have cared either way. She was busy rubbing every last grain of sand off the stone. Then she held it out to him once more.

"What is it?" he asked, looking down at her. She tugged on his pants with her free paw, using the other to hold her prized rock as high as she could. "Oh!" he said, suddenly feeling quite stupid. "Is this for me? A present?" he took the rock from her again and she looked pleased.

"Thank you," he said warmly. Nimbus scratched under Meu's chin and rubbed her head affectionately. Even if it was just a rock, he wanted to show her that he appreciated it. It obviously meant something to her, after all. Come to think of it, he had heard something about Likuta and rocks. What was that, anyway? It must not have been that important if he couldn't even remember it.

Still holding his new present in one hand, he pulled his bag off his shoulder and showed it to her. Meu took a second to sniff at it, but it just smelled like him. Since it wasn't interesting, she left it alone. He lifted the flap and slipped the rock inside. He tapped the bag a couple of times for emphasis, hoping she would get the hint. "I'll keep it in here for safe keeping, okay?"

Meu curiously pawed at the bag a couple of times before deciding it wasn't worth further investigation. The Likuta looked up at Nimbus and made a soft sound, almost like a purr. It seemed that she was pleased with his choice to store the rock in his bag. Either that, or she had already forgotten about it. Neither option would surprise him much.

"Do you want to go play in the rock pools?" Nimbus asked. While he wasn't crazy enough to think the Likuta would be speaking back to him, he always liked to talk to his pets like they were people. It made him feel closer to them, and in a way he felt like they understood. Even if they were only picking up on his tone, it simply felt less... lonely when he had 'someone' to talk to.

Meu stretched her body up and tilted her head. She made another soft sound, as if she were responding to him. "Great!" he said cheerfully, grabbing his bag. Nimbus threw it over his shoulder and headed for the rock pools. Though he was sure she'd probably come along without being asked, he clicked his tongue and flicked his hand in the direction he was headed in. The subtle signals had become second nature to him by now.

Meu bounded along behind him, her long tail waving back and forth with the motion of her body. Every time she bounced, it touched against the dark sand, leaving an interesting pattern in her wake. She didn't know where they were going, of course, but that didn't matter. When did she ever know what he was up to?

They didn't have to travel far before they had reached the rock pools. Knowing how slippery the smoothed rock could be, Nimbus was very careful about where he put his feet. Meu didn't really have that problem, so she was happy to bounce around from rock to rock. Her body was a little better built for all this beach stuff. That's why he brought her along in the first place. Well, that and she was also fun.

The soft rolling waves of the ocean crept over the shore and retreated, leaving swirling pools of water in the gaps between the rocks. Many small creatures and plants were also swept into the pools only to leave again at high tide. For but a short flicker in time, the pool they found themselves in was their entire world. Then they were whisked away again, back into the vast ocean.

Nimbus sat on one of the taller rocks and placed his bag next to him to keep it dry. This would be much easier with his shoes off. Since there wasn't anyone around, he figured it would be okay to take them off for a little bit. Once they were off he let his bare feet touch the cold water. Much better! Now he didn't have to worry about getting his shoes wet, and he was more comfortable. Why did people even wear shoes, anyway? Perhaps he would remember once his feet returned to the hot sand.

Meu grabbed one of his free shoes and shoved her nose into it. Immediately she recoiled and threw it to the ground. Nimbus was just barely quick enough to catch it before it hit the water. "Be careful," he warned. The last thing he wanted was to carry around wet shoes for the rest of the day.

Nimbus stuffed his shoes into his bag and slipped off the tall rock he was sitting on. Before he got too far, Meu stuck her head into his bag to take a look. Even though she had already decided once before that his bag and shoes were uninteresting, she wanted to look again. The rock was still in there among the other things he was carrying, and once she saw it she seemed satisfied. She pulled her head out and looked up at him.

"Are you done looking?" he asked patiently. Though most people would be annoyed with an animal going through their bag, he didn't really mind. He had all of the patience in the world for his pets. He had long since learned not to keep anything valuable or easily broken around, anyway. Since he wasn't very materialistic in the first place, it wasn't a hard thing to do.

After he was sure that Meu was done going through his things and hadn't taken anything, Nimbus returned to traveling among the wave pools. Taking his shoes off turned out to be a great idea. Not only did he not have to worry about getting them wet anymore, but he had more grip with his toes and paw pads free. Sometimes he wasn't sure how humans were able to deal without them.

Meu was lagging a bit behind, as she had decided to stick her nose into every hole she found. Occasionally she'd squeak or growl at a fish, but more often than not she didn't find anything fun. After some searching, she finally found something neat! She shoved her paw into a crack to grab her newly found treasure. Unfortunately, her arm was too short to reach. She looked up at Nimbus and whined, trying to elicit his help.

It took a moment for Nimbus to realize that Meu wasn't right behind him anymore. When he found her, she was twisted up, trying her hardest to get at something between two rocks. Nimbus wanted to laugh at her, but he managed to hold it in. She straightened herself up and squeaked at him frantically, gesturing to the hole.

"What is it?" he asked, bending down slightly to take a look. It was too dark to see what she could be so concerned about. "Is there something in there?"

Though he probably should be, Nimbus wasn't reluctant in sticking his hand in the hole. First, he took his gloves off. That was a decent idea in that it kept them clean, but not such a smart choice for the health of his fingers. It was almost like he was daring something to sting or bite him at this rate.

Today was his lucky day. It turned out that there wasn't a scary stinging monsters in the hole. Just some rocks, sand, and a smooth thing. Nimbus grabbed the smooth thing, assuming it would be what Meu wanted. He pulled it up to look at it and discovered that it was a shell. The creature that once lived inside was long gone, but the shell itself was unbroken.

He reached out to hand Meu the shell, but she swatted it out of his hand. It clattered to the ground, cracking on the rocky surface. Nimbus frowned down at it, "Hey that was pretty." Meu squeaked again, pointing at the crack the shell had come from. Obviously there was something else in there that she wanted. Nimbus shrugged and reached in again to see if he could figure out what it was.

His hand probed around, trying to feel for anything he may have missed before. After a while he was convinced that he didn't miss anything. It was just rocks and sand. Meu was bouncing around him impatiently. At first he couldn't figure it out, but then it hit him. Earlier, she had given him a rock, and it seemed pretty important to her. Maybe she wanted one of these rocks!

Nimbus grabbed a couple of rocks in his outstretched fingers and pulled them out. He sat them in front of Meu and asked her, "Is this what you want?" Meu looked over the rocks curiously. She tapped one with her paw, then swatted it away. Nope. One she ignored completely, and another she picked up and nibbled on.

Apparently rocks were serious business. Nimbus didn't really know what was going on, but it was amusing to watch. Meu had thrown most of the other rocks away and had two left that she was interested in. She tapped them with her paws, rolled them around, stuck them in her mouth, and even banged them together briefly. In the end, she chirped with annoyance and shoved them both away. It looked like neither of them stood up to the test.

"What was wrong with this one?" Nimbus asked, holding up one of the rocks with a striped band around the middle. Meu ignored him and ran off to stick her nose into more holes. He just shrugged and sat the rock down gently nearby. Maybe some other Likuta would come by and decide they like this one, but probably not.
