Nimbus hastily dried his paw on his pants and continued his journey. He watched the uneven ground carefully beneath his feet. Both because he didn't want to slip, and because he didn't want to accidentally harm some unsuspecting creature. The little pools between the rocks were filled with life of all kinds, some of it too small for even him to see.

Meu was poking around between the rocks as usual, looking for her perfect stone. The boy suspected that she was also eating some of the fish she found along the way, but he tried not to worry about it. Likuta were going to eat little creatures and there was nothing he could do about it. While he may never like that fact, he had long since accepted it.

Though the rocks were all starting to look the same, Nimbus forced himself to remain focused. They would never find anything if he didn't pay attention. Maybe they needed to do something a bit different for a change. As luck would have it, a somewhat substantial rock pool was just ahead of him. This would be a perfect place to spend some time and clear his head.

"Come see," Nimbus called out to Meu. The Likuta had been lagging behind, due to her need to investigate every crack and crevasse. When he beckoned her over, she came running to him. She barely managed to skid to a stop before falling into the rock pool he was trying to show her. Not that she really minded getting wet.

"Isn't it beautiful?" Nimbus asked, settling down on the pool's edge. He reached his paw into the water, letting the gentle current flow through his fingers. It was fascinating to him that there was so much life here, yet tomorrow it could all be gone. Following his lead, Meu put her paw into the pool too. The water was slightly warm from the sun shining on it all morning. The shallower water was able to hold heat better than the constantly moving deep ocean from whence it came.

At first the tiny fish in the pool darted away from them, fearing the worst, but they slowly came back. One was even brave enough to brush against his finger as it swam fast. Another tried to nibble on Meu's paw. Though it didn't hurt her, she was frustrated enough by it that she splashed in the pool, making them all dart away again. Nimbus sighed lightly, but he didn't feel like it was worth commenting on.

Other than the fish, there was more wildlife to be seen in the pool. There were a few crabs of varying sizes, some as small as a finger nail. Varied shells sat among the black sand at the bottom of the water, but it was hard to say for sure which ones were abandoned. Nimbus knew enough about sea life not to be poking any strange shells. There could be a stinger or pincer hidden away, eagerly waiting for his fleshy paws to get close.

"Look here," Nimbus said, pointing. Meu looked at the end of his finger and tilted her head, confused. "Of course," he sighed to himself, dropping his hand. Now that he thought about it, it was better if she didn't pay attention. She would probably just eat it, anyway.

Nimbus watched the little creatures stirring within the pool in a rare moment of peaceful silence. The starfish he had tried to bring Meu's attention to didn't move much, but many of the other little creatures were bristling with life. They were busy hunting, and avoiding being hunted. Some of them chose to run, and others chose to hide. In a way, it seemed like they had it all figured out, but they were just doing all they knew how to do.

While he could probably sit here and watch the pool forever, they would never get anything done by doing that. Besides, Meu was starting to get antsy. The whole circle of life stuff was a bit over her head. "Okay, okay," he said, scratching under the Likuta's chin.

The rocks around the pool were very smooth and slick, so he was careful as he pulled himself to his feet. He took a moment to make sure he had everything before continuing on. Meu bounced around him, eager to get going again. There were way more nooks and crannies out there for her to stick her paws in! While she may not really know what adventuring was, she was liking it all the same.

"Shall we?" Nimbus asked, looking down only to find that Meu had already gotten a head start. With a shrug, he decided to follow after her. It wasn't like he knew where he wanted to go next, anyway. Either she would lead him somewhere interesting, or he could use the time to think. Maybe even a little of both.

Ocean waves lapped at the edges of the rock, splashing up and spilling into the pools. Later in the day, they would be completely covered by the water, only to emerge again when the tide went out. Little flecks of water showered down on Nimbus as a light mist. The mist blowing against his skin was soothing and cool, especially compared to the hot dry sand of the beach. There was just enough to keep him cool without getting his fur wet. Perfect.

Meu was not showing any signs of giving up on her search. From one gap in the rock to the next, she darted around energetically, checking each and every one. Nimbus was a little surprised that she hadn't gotten bored yet. Not very many things kept her interest for this long.

"What are you looking for, anyway?" Nimbus asked her. He had finally caught up to her and was looking down as she fished around in a small tide pool. The Likuta grabbed a rock and held it up near her face. First she sniffed it, then she threw it back in the pool with a disgruntled squeak. This just made him more curious than ever. There was no way that the rocks actually smelled different... right?

"You're a crazy little thing, you know that?" As usual, she had no idea what he was on about, but she did like the tone with which he said it. She hopped over to him and put her paws on his thigh. He instinctively rubbed her head affectionately, not yet realizing that she was getting mud all over his pants.

Meu had her fill of head scratches and flipped herself off his leg to pursue more rocks. It was only after she left that Nimbus noticed the muddy paw prints up his leg. "Aww come on," he said, trying to brush off some of the mud. Unfortunately, he just ended up smearing it everywhere and getting it on his paws. With a light sigh he made his way closer to the water.

Using his cupped hands, he splashed some water on his pants. It was better to be wet than muddy, he figured. With how hot it was out here, it would probably dry soon enough anyway. When he was done with that, he decided to take a break and sit with his feet in the water. The waves of water hitting the rocks made him thoroughly wet, but he already decided he didn't care about that.

Meu had wandered pretty far before she realized that she didn't know where Nimbus was any more. She made an alarmed chirp and tried to retrace her steps to find him. The Likuta bounced anxiously from one rock to another, hoping to see him at every turn. Every time she peeked around a rock and he wasn't there, she got a little more discouraged. This was not okay! What if she never ever found him again?

A desperate squeaky chirp escaped her as she began to really panic. Nimbus' ears perked up at the sound. At first he almost missed it, but he could not ignore the sound of a creature in trouble. "Meu? Is that you? Are you okay?" Though he was concerned for her safety, he spoke loudly and calmly. If he remained calm, he stood the best chance of fixing the problem without agitating her further.

Her ears and spines alike stood up on end. What was that? Wait! It was him! She found him! Meu bolted toward the sound of his voice. Her paws nearly slipped away from under her as she forced all of her energy into running. Finally she found him! A rock had hidden him from her view, even though he wasn't very far from where she had been looking.

"It's okay, girl," Nimbus said calmly when saw her come into view. His reassuring words did little to stop her from charging at him as fast as she could manage. Nimbus braced himself for impact, hoping that her inevitable slam into him didn't send them both tumbling into the water below.

Meu dove headfirst into the boy's torso. The top of her head pressed firmly against his chest, and her paws pulled at his shirt. It was almost like she was trying to dig into him as if he were made of sand. Nimbus ran his hands along her side, smoothing down her soft fur in an attempt to help comfort her. Her panicked squeaking mellowed into clicking chirps.

The two of them were uncomfortably close to tumbling into the ocean behind them. Her kicking and pawing was throwing off his sense of balance. Nimbus tried to readjust himself, but in doing so he caused Meu to lose her already unstable footing. She scrambled against the slick wet rock, but her back end was already slipping away.

Instead of trying to fight to stay on the rock, she decided it would be smarter to just give in. Once she realized what was happening, she was happy to take a dip in the water. Her body twisted into a miraculously graceful dive.

Once she resurfaced, she looked back up at the rock to be sure that Nimbus was okay. Likutas were better swimmers than walkers, but the same could not be said of people. They just sort of miserably flopped around in the water. At least that's what it felt like to her.

"Are you alright?" he asked. She was bobbing up and down in the water relatively peacefully for how turbulent it was around the rocks. "Oh of course you are, you're the best swimmer I know!"

"Just a minute, and I'll join you," he explained, pulling his bag off. He secured it on a nearby rock that was still far enough away to keep it dry. Then he hastily pulled the rest of his clothes off, leaving only the swim wear he had on underneath. While he didn't care too much for clothing in general, he had a good habit of being practical about it. Wearing something he could swim in seemed like a good idea when going to the beach.

Unlike Meu, who didn't have a choice, Nimbus was very careful about approaching the water. He was much bigger than her, and not nearly as graceful. The sudden drop from the rocks to the water felt like it could be dangerous to navigate. Some of the rocks were sharp, and others lurked just out of sight. It would be all to easy to slip and bash something on them.

Meu began swimming impatiently in little circles. Waiting for him to get into the water was taking forever! Why couldn't he just dive like she did? Silly people, always doing things all weird. It hadn't occurred to her as a dangerous move at all. This was pretty much her natural habitat, after all. She felt perfectly at home here.

That wasn't nearly as bad as it could have been. It didn't even take him that long to get into the water. Though Meu seemed to think otherwise. Normally he wasn't terribly careful, but this was a situation where a little caution went a long way. The last thing he needed was to knock his head against a rock and fall face first into the ocean. He doubted in his little pink friend's ability to drag him to safety. Though if any Likuta could do it, it would be this one.
