In contrast to the Dead Coast, Sa'fir Coast is jokingly referred to as the world's largest pepper deposit because of its black sand beaches. They attract tourists, who can enjoy the tropical landscape of Barakka without facing its harsh environments. (+2 Endurance)

Pursuit [HUNT] [Open]

The beach was largely deserted at this time of day, but if there had been anyone paying attention to this particular stretch of sand, they would likely have doubted the evidence of their senses; the sight of a small overturned rowboat waddling along the beach, followed by an antlered Rabbot, was not one most people would have expected to see. When it had just about reached the edge of the water, the boat stopped and suddenly flipped over, revealing a Mimebones wearing a bright yellow raincoat.

"I'm not convinced you need to be wearing that," Roman said, in reference to the coat. "If you fall overboard you'll sink like a stone and take all of your notes with you, and whether or not you get wet won't matter anymore."

Cyrano laughed. "I have no intent of doing any such thing! You may think this is silly now, my friend, but once we are actually on the water I think you'll find yourself wishing you'd brought one along. Are my goggles in there? I can't remember."

"No. They weren't on the list."

"A shame. But nothing to be done about it now."

A number of bags and pouches were strapped and taped to the undersides of the boat's seats, containing food and bait and various live traps, among other necessities. They planned to be out at sea for a few days at least, perhaps two weeks if it took them too long to catch anything; if they stayed much longer than that Roman would have to eat seaweed and he insisted that this was a terrible fate, though Cyrano had tried it once and didn't think it so dreadful as all that. Regardless, they were at least as prepared as they needed to be, and quite possibly more, given that in essence they were just on a fishing trip.

Morgane's eyes and ears just protruded out of the water as she watched the two land dwellers with a mixture of annoyance and amusement. That yellow raincoat was truly a sight to behold. However, they were coming too close to her home for comfort. She flicked a drop of water off her ear as the debated the issue. Perhaps she should pay them a visit to see what they intend to do and how much of what she considered her fish stock they were planning to take. She submerged herself back under the water swimming up to the shoreline. She quickly reached the shoreline where the two were talking and shook off her wet coat. "And just what do you think your going to be doing in my hunting territory?" she looks over the canoe they had "With several days worth of provisions, I might add." She cocks an eye at the pair readying her venomous spines, just in case.

They both managed not to jump at the sudden interruption, but it was a close thing. Cyrano was the first to process the speaker's appearance, and though he was not actually capable of grinning any more or less than usual, he did perk up immediately. "A Rinkuhna! I've never met any of your kind, I am quite—"

"Cyrano," Roman said sharply.

Cyrano's mouth clattered shut, though only briefly. "Right. We are here on an expedition, to do research! Namely, to study some of the stranger creatures found in this area, and if we're lucky, to discover some that have never been seen before." He waved toward the ocean and nearly lost his balance in his enthusiasm. "We were not aware that this was your territory, but I assure you, we have no desire to unbalance the local ecosystem. We'll try to collect a representative sample of species, that is all."

"Oh you're scientists." She relaxed  her spines a little as they explained their purpose. She had been introduced to several varieties of scientist through a friend of hers who taught biology at the local university. "Very well go ahead and do your research. However, I am going with you to monitor your take." She also considered helping them find what species they were looking for. However, she wanted to monitor their process in handling her fish before she offered outright to help them. She also wanted to see what these scientists were like and they were respectful enough to be taken to her special hunting grounds. "By the way, uh, Cyrano was it? If you have questions about my kind you may ask." She knew how his type functioned. Eventually he wouldn't be able to contain his questions about her so she figured she might as well let him get it all out of his system now.

[Sorry about the wait! ]

Roman was not entirely thrilled about the prospect of being watched. Not that they were planning to do anything harmful, of course, but he knew Cyrano tended to get a bit...dramatic with an audience, and that might well lead to endangering himself, Roman, or the integrity of his research. And would probably also lead to Roman getting wet.

But they didn't have much choice in the matter, and having someone else reasonable around might help stave off those same problems, so he just said, "Will you be swimming, or...? I'm not sure there's room for all of us in the boat as well as Cyrano's samples." He started shifting things around. "What's your name, by the way?" he added.

Cyrano practically danced at being given permission to ask questions. "Oh, thank you! Are you poisonous or venomous? Most of the researchers I know say venomous but there has been some debate on the subject recently and no one has been able to find a representative to confirm with. How big is your hunting territory? Do you share it with any other predators or—"

"Give her time to answer, Cyrano."

"Right, right, sorry."

(No worries. Things happen)

"My name is Morgane. I can swim alongside your boat if it's necessary. It will not bee too difficult for me to keep up." She could tell that Roman was still wary of her, which suited her just fine. If he was nervous it could mean that he would be better behaved than if completely relaxed. If he was nervous then he would be less likely to take more fish from her territory than what she thought was appropriate.

She pause to think on Cyrano's first question. "Well, I suppose I would be considered venomous since I inject my prey with venom through my teeth or through the spines on my back." Depending on their behavior she would be happy go give them a sample either in a test tube or through their skin. She hadn't decided which yet, but it seemed more like they would behave. Besides she was curious what made her so deadly. "Since I do not have a mate yet my territory is not very large, only about 50 miles. I am willing to share some fish with others, however I will fight for my crabs and shrimp."

Cyrano bounced. "I see! How do you go about finding a mate? Er...if that's not too intrusive, that is," he added after a moment. His curiosity did tend to get ahead of his manners sometimes. Some might say often, even. But he deflated only for a moment and was about to start in again when he was interrupted.

"We're losing daylight, you know," Roman said.

"Quite right. Let us cast off!"

"The boat's not actually attached to—"

"It's a figure of speech, my friend!"

Roman snorted and didn't reply. He waited for Cyrano to settle himself among the supplies before climbing aboard and using his tail to push them the rest of the way into the water, though he pulled it in sharply as soon as they were free of the shore. They hadn't brought oars; Roman dug through one of the bags while Cyrano chattered away about fish or something and produced a small black-painted jar. In one or two places a faint greenish glow could be seen through the paint. He held this up for Morgane to see. Transparency seemed the best policy under the circumstances, and he knew that what he was about to do with it might look suspicious.

"It's a sort of propulsion device," he said. "Powered by magic, needs more or less complete darkness to work. We haven't used it for a trip this long before, but it's stable. If it goes wrong the worst that will happen is that we'll be stranded." Which wouldn't be good, but he had enough to worry about without dwelling on that as well. "Well, I suppose you won't be stranded, just Cyrano and me."
