Tales of a Kuhna (P)

Postby Kyarra » 09/17/2009 7:16 AM

One morning Riku was sleeping in his basket as he woke up by a shooting pain. He felt something strange in his mouth. The inside of his snout was – until now – an oozy wetland where his tongue glided over round and smooth shapes. But now there was something new, something harassing. At the upper palate, not far from his upper lip, his gums stretched. A spiky bump-shaped THING seemed to grow underneath and caused this vibrant pain.

He decided to tell Kyarra his ailment to achieve an appropriate regret and to get overwhelmed by tender loving care. But nobody was near by. He had to go to the stables, where Kyarra – for some mysterious reasons – used to throw hay around at this time of the day.

The way to the stables was – as he knows – dangerous. Downstairs, across through the kitchen, across the porch with those dangerous little wood splinters, across the muddy courtyard – that was a really exhausting way. If he just could walk on only two legs like Kyarra.

Riku clambered out of his basket and went downstairs and outside the house. He stalked with one’s legs apart across the courtyard……

The morning sun warmed his pelt and the air was cool and refreshing. Riku breathed deeply and stopped to savour the sun light on his pelt. He twinkled into the blinding light and closed his eyes. And there it was again – the world that manifested every time he closed his eyes. It was a world of odors, which swirled in his minds eye – thin pathways of red, yellow, green and blue light that streamed tangled in confusion.

The green one belonged to the lush lavender bush which grew right next to him. The yellow pathway was delicious lemon cake and the red one belonged to the compost heap. Blue was the fresh morning breeze which carried the smell of the near ocean. There also were many other colours – even ugly and dirty ones – like the brown flag of dung. But he was surprised of another colour which he never smelled before. High above all those countrified odors wafted a silver ribbon. It was thin and gentle – as little as a thread – but he saw it clearly with his minds eye.

A strange restlessness grew inside him, an indefinite longing and up to now he never felt the wish to left everything behind and trek to a faraway place.

He took a deep breath and a shiver ran down his spine. Deep inside he knew that if he would make this silver thread to the guideline of his way and followed it to its origin he would find his luck.

But for now he had to go to the stables to complain. He opened his eyes and went to the stables. Now he stood in front of the large stable door and spied inside to see what Kyarra was doing. It was dark inside and his eyes needed some time to focus. First he just recognised only clumsy shadows from wooden truss and bales of straw. He twinkled again and recognised that the proceedings inside the stable were contrary to all his expectations. Kyarra was not busy to stuff hey into bags – in fact she simply was NOT there.

He doesn’t care of that at first – he was familiar with the fact that obscure things happened in the world of humans. A couple of days ago they had brought a Battleheart to the courtyard – what an uprising! All people cluttered around like hens and the Battleheart bellowed for hours. Meanwhile the Battleheart was lying in his sinkhole and was an everyday occurrence.

He stepped into the stable and tried to figure out what he should say. “I have excruciating pains!” or should he say “I’m going to leave now!” He had to realize that nobody was there to care for him. That was not what he had in mind. His legs started to shiver and his butt as heavy like lead. Riku gained a new experience: how it feels to be alone…

Over an hour later he was still sitting there and staring into the empty room. Why had everybody left him? He felt so alone and heavy-hearted. Riku remembered the day his sister Misaki left their home – the same sharp pain in his heart. One little tear drop ran down his face and he sighed.

Suddenly he felt something different – his stomach began to grumble. “That’s great!” he said to himself “Not enough that my snout is aching and everybody has left me – now I’m getting hungry!” He closed his eyes in the hope that he might smell something delicious to eat. Several colours appeared in his minds eye – also the silver thread. Suddenly he got up and started to walk outside the stable. He hadn’t thought for a second if it could be a bad idea – he felt that THIS was what he had to do and so he started to follow the silver thread.

As he reached the big gate he stopped for a last time and looked back at the farm house, which was his home up to now. Riku felt a stitch in his chest – he wondered if his sister had felt the same as she left their home. Maybe she also had followed a silver thread. She had never said something like this but Riku felt that it had to be that way.

He took a last deep breath and stepped through the gate onto the field road. He never was that far away from his home, he always used to stop at the gate in fear of that he could get lost. Now he walked straightaway along the field road. On every occasion he closed his eyes and stuck his nose in the wind to make sure that he still was following the little silver thread. Out there a totally new world of odours opened up to him – he saw so many new colours. The brown pathway of the dung pile had given way for the golden yellow of the near corn field and the Lemon Pie vanished and instead of there was the dark green of the forest.

Riku tried to get not distracted by outside influences but every now and then he had to stop and watch the croaking frogs in the pond (for example). As a matter of fact he didn’t know what frogs are because he had never seen such creatures before. He only knew that they looked slimy and uneatable.

*grumble*

His stomach shouted at him again – he still hadn’t eaten a bit. Where the heck should he find something to eat? There was not the slightest chance to find a fridge here in the wilderness

Nicha had just rolled out of bed when she was summoned to see the Mistress.  It wasn't often that the Mistress decided to see anyone, so it was a bit of a surprise to her.  It must be something important, she thought.  But apparently it hadn't been important at all.  She merely wanted Nicha to go to town and do some supply hunting.  But, the Mistress always had reasons for everything, and even for something like this, it might have another purpose.  Who knew...?

So Nicha made her way, begrudgingly, into the woods to get to Nabias.  Luckily, the castle always seemed to be close to wherever anyone needed to go (not that anyone knew why, or how for that matter, but it was best not to ask questions.)  She hated going through the woods by herself, even though they were fairly safe.  It just was creepy how quiet it could get sometimes.  And then, at the most random moments, there would be a...noise...

Kind of like the one she had just heard.  Something had snapped a twig not too far off from where she was.  She cautiously went to go see what it was, hoping she wouldn't regret it later.  Inching closer, using some of the trees for cover, she peered around some bushes to see the cause of the noise.  She shouldn't have been too surprised, this road was traveled fairly frequently, but she was happy to see that it was actually another kuhna that had caused it.

Perhaps she didn't have to make this trip through the woods on her own after all.  She worked up the nerve, and walked out into the open, not too quickly though, so she wouldn't scare the unsuspecting kuhna.

"Hello there, sorry to bother you, but might I join you on your way into town?"  She asked politely.

Riku opened his eyes and grew stiff as he noticed something blue approaching in the corner of his eye. ‘Don’t dare to get into panic!’ He said to himself. ‘It won’t be a wild beast of prey.' He absolutely had no inkling of these things but anyhow he had known that wild beasts were not luminous blue – they barely could sneak upon their prey. He recollected his courage and turned around slowly.

He gladly noticed that it was a Kuhna girl which came across through the bushes. She slowly came up to him and gave the same uncertain impression like him. As she asked him if she could join him on his way he just said “Um…….I think you can.”

Several minutes of uncomfortable silence were behind them while they walked along the field road. Suddenly Riku broke the silence.
“I……I haven’t asked you for your name yet…..and I haven’t introduced myself…..how impolite….please excuse me!” he bowed his head down “My name is Riku.”

*GRUMBLE*

His stomach grumbled so loud that he was embarrassed. She would have heard it without fail – such a grumbling was hard to ignore. Riku squinted his eyes and tried to put his stomach to silence.

Nicha smiled at the young kuhna.

"Pleased to meet you Riku, my name is Nicha."  She almost jumped as his stomach growled.  "Oh, you're hungry?  Maybe we should find some food when we get to town, the Mistress gave me money for supplies, we can go get lunch as well."  She giggled and continued on the path towards town.

"So...where are you from?  What are you planning on doing when you get to town?"

„Nice to meet you Nicha!“ he answered to her. He was completely embarrassed of the fact that his stomach was grumbling so loud. When she asked him where he came from he instantly knew the answer “My owner’s farm is at the end of this field road!” but when Nicha asked him about his plans he had to think about that. Actually he had no plan – he just started his journey by a quirk of fate.

“Um…..my plans…....erm…..I don’t have the slightest idea! To be honest…..I haven’t spare any thoughts about that as I walked away. I just knew that it was the right thing. I have no idea what comes next when we get to the town. By the way….what is the name of the town?” he was very embarrassed about the fact that he was a very clueless boy.

"Ummm...  Well, the name of the town if Nabias."  She giggled again.  She seemed all too happy to finally have a companion to travel with instead of going by herself.  Since the Mistress sent her to run errands on her own, she supposed it would be alright to have this kuhna come with her, if he wanted to.

"My Mistress sent me to go run errands, buying groceries and stuff like that for our castle.  I'm not really sure where to go to get anything, this is my first time in this town."  She looked at Riku, "Do you want to come with me while I run errands, we can see the town together."

She looked back at his stomach, "Oh, and we wanted to get food..."  Just as she said that, the village was in sight, only a few more steps and they would be there.  Nicha grew more excited, wondering what kind of interesting things the village would hold.

“Nabias, huh? Never heard that name before. Anyway! I would be very glad to explore the town with you.” He answered with a little smile. This girl was very nice to Riku, although she didn’t knew him. As the two Kuhnas arrived the entrance to the town Riku suddenly stopped for a moment – he was stunned. He never was in a town before and he had no idea what a town would look like.

Many people were always on the run and busy with doing something. There was a man who drew a wheelbarrow with barrels on it – it seemed to be very heavy because the men made a strange facial expression and swore a lot. The next thing he saw was a girl with a stoneware jug on her head, water swashed out of it while she was walking through the fray. Riku hesitated just for a moment but then he closed his eyes.

“Wow!” it blurted out of him “So many new colors. That’s awesome!” he opened his eyes again and looked to Nicha “Are you ready?”

Nicha smiled at Riku, "I'm ready."

As the two walked around the bustling town, they were met with many interesting sites.  They passed an interesting looking well that seemed to draw the attention of a lot of different types of people and creatures.  They passed many stores and displays of wares.  A woman had a fabric stand where she sold many types of beautiful silks, linens, and other things that she would make into clothing for anyone buying them.  As they passed her, she was taking measurements from a beautiful woman.

They passed a blacksmith, hammering on his anvil, straightening what looked like a farmer's scythe blade.  He wiped some sweat from his brow with the back of his hand and nodded at them as they passed.

Next, they came upon a small, friendly looking building that had the most amazing smells wafting from the door and windows.  The sign hanging from the front door had a picture of a fresh, steaming hot, pie painted on it.  "Oh look!" Nicha exclaimed, "A bakery!  Just what we need."

Riku was overwhelmed by all the new impressions that the town offered him. He surveyed the blacksmith very interested while they walked by and Riku returned the nodding of the blacksmith. Just for the fun of it he closed his eyes as he wanted to know which colour the steel would have – it was a dark grayish blue. However he now was able to see another, not so beautiful colour. A pale yellow which turned out to be sweat. Riku scrunched his nose in disgust – suddenly he smelled the delicious scent of fresh baked bread and cake. He opened his eyes and recognized that they were standing in front of a small bakery.

"A bakery! Just what we need." said Nicha and suddenly a thought flashed through his mind. He remembered a conversation between Kyarra and someone from the farm. They had talked about the prices of the goods in the town. “Prices……“ he mumbled and looked bashfully at the ground. „Erm, Nicha……I don’t have any money with me. I just left the farm without thinking about such things.” Riku sighed – another embarrassing situation for him. This was developing to a habit.

Nicha smiled at Riku, "I'm sure my mistress won't mind if I buy us some lunch."  She pulled Riku into the bakery, ignoring the awkward look on his face.

Inside, there was a grouping of small tables covered in various colored table clothes, surrounded by chairs with matching cushions.  It was lit by the windows of the store and small candle pots sitting in the center of each of the tables.  It was a very cute little shop.  And the inside smelled delicious...

Nicha hopped up onto one of the chairs at a table in the center of the room and began to survey the menu, deciding what she wanted to eat.  "Everything sounds so good..."  The waitress, wearing a white apron, came around to take their orders.  Nicha smiled at her, "I think I want this sandwich."  She pointed at the menu.  She looked up at Riku, "What are you going to get?"

Inside the little bakery it smelled fabulous of fresh cake and bread. Riku manoeuvred himself onto the chair next to Nicha and had a quick look at the menu. “I would like to have a sandwich, too.” he said to the waitress. “I don’t want to over-punish your moneybag. Don’t want you to get in trouble with your mistress because of me.”

The two Kuhnas waited a while for their meal and Riku took the opportunity for a little natter. “So…..where are you from? And why do you have to run the errands? I hope I’m not impolite to ask you that!”
The waitress placed two plates with sandwiches on the table. Riku took one bite "Mmmmmh…..this is really delicious!” he said with his mouth full and trying not to smack.
