It was a wonderful day. Of course, Gamma did think it was a wonderful day most of the time. Why wouldn't he? After all, he did get to spend all of his time in a place which was equivalent to heaven for him. True, it was perhaps a bit too stuffy to be spending all day in a library. But he'd never been fond of the outdoors. It was beautiful and intricate and he admired it in that aspect. But personally nothing could beat a good library, especially one as massive as this. He couldn't believe his luck when he'd been offered the job. Despite the fact it was the largest library in Evelon, not many people seemed to visit it. Not ones that needed his help anyway, which meant a lot of the time he was getting paid to sit around and read. Now that really was his idea of paradise.

The fact it was one of the hottest summers in a while hadn't helped convince people it was worth coming here. In fact, Gamma was the only person in the library at all, not that he cared. It suited him just fine, the peace and quiet. Pity all that was about to change

It was a hot day. Scooti hated hot days. She never used to. She never used to be particularly bothered about whether it was a hot day or not. But now, now things were different. She had all this horrible fur weighing her down, making her feel like she was slowly baking to death in a giant oven. She wasn't used to fur and she certainly wasn't enjoying the new-found experience. In fact, she had a sneaking feeling it might just be driving her insane.

"I need...to get out." Panting out loud, she glanced around hopefully. Surely there had to be some kind of shelter for her to seek comfort under? No doubt she probably looked crazy right now, glancing around feverishly and talking to herself. No matter. She was used to people thinking she was crazy. Apparently she couldn't fake normal as well as she'd thought she could.

Finally, her gaze fell upon a dusty old building. It was quite a grand building, made out of white marble which should have rightly been glistening in the sun. Unfortunately, it was rather run-down and decrepit. Depressingly so. Ears twitching, Scooti couldn't help but feel sorry for it. Yes, it was an inanimate object. But to be fair, so was she. Or rather, she had been.

Making up her mind, Scooti began to walk determinedly towards the building. She certainly couldn't stay outside any longer. Besides, it might be kind of fun inside. Like going on a brand new adventure...

She missed that feeling.

The bang of the doors opening startled him, so much so that he actually dropped his book. Frowning, Gamma stooped down to scoop it up before turning in the direction of the doors. Clearly he wasn't alone anymore. Peering over his glasses, Gamma saw a female Lucain wandering in hesitantly. She didn't look nervous exactly-more like she wasn't sure she should be there.

She was also one of the prettiest Lucain Gamma had ever seen.

It wasn't often Gamma got crushes. He had learnt to talk himself out of them having figured out they never led to anything good. He was simply not the sort of person who could just waltz over and chat a girl up, and because they never chatted him up either he'd discovered it was pointless to even try and hope something might happen. Besides, he wasn't sure he'd know how to act if anyone ever did talk to him. He'd probably do or say something utterly stupid. As a result he'd trained himself not to pay attention to anyone pretty, but occasionally the odd girl did slip through his radar. Such was the case with this lovely creature.

She looks lost That was the first thought he had, and it was true. He wasn't sure why but she did seem very dazed, as if she had no idea where she was. Probably she didn't. Though his urges told him to go over and help her, it was his cowardice which won in the end. Opening his book again and mumbling something unintelligibly to himself, he sat back down at the table. There was no point bothering a girl like that. She probably didn't even need his help.

After all, no one else ever did

What a queer building. In some ways, it was just as dusty on the inside as the outside. Not that it wasn't clean or even kept up to date-she could tell that someone cared for this library very much so. On the contrary, it was the fact the building was so empty and looked like it had been so for a while which made it like the outside. She felt as if she must be the first visitor for a long time.

Indeed, at first she thought she was the only one in the building. There was no one behind the book counter and no one wandering up and down the aisles, looking for books. It was only when she heard the gentle thud that she realized someone else must be there. Instantly she felt sorry for them. Fancy being all alone in a building like this! Having been on her own far too much lately for her liking, Scooti felt sympathy for anyone who had to suffer the same plight. She instantly resolved to hunt this person down and offer them her company.

It didn't take her long. She spotted the Lucain a few minutes later, sat at a small table and reading patiently. He looked a little embarrassed about something, though she couldn't imagine what. He was fairly tall and quite skinny, a sweet-looking male with a soft face. He was very easily the sort of person you might overlook, though to be fair he was quite good-looking in his own right. His reading glasses obscured his markings slightly but she could still spot the most obvious Split marking, right down the middle of his face. She'd always been fascinated by the Split marking. How queer it would be to be entirely split in two. She saw him glance up briefly at her and she seized the opportunity to speak.

"Hello." She smiled brightly, hoping she was waving right. It was little things like that that she still got wrong. His expression was still startled so she couldn't really tell, but deciding not to let it throw her she wandered over anyway. No point in being shy if it was just the two of them

Wow. She had approached him. That had never happened before. Better yet (or probably worst still since it would require a reply) she was actually talking, making an odd gesture with her hand. A megawatt smile was being beamed straight at him, her teeth looking astonishingly white against her purple fur. She was very purple indeed, a whole variety of shades dashed all over her coat. The only markings he could really make out were her tail and chest ones, though she had to have more among the various shades.

"H-hi." He stuttered, managing to smile back. Thank goodness his mouth knew what to do because his brain and body sure as hell didn't. Subconsciously he clung to the book tighter, as if it could provide some sort of protection against this alluring creature. She didn't seem to notice his apparent discomfort though because she pulled out the chair next to him and sat down on it, still looking genuinely friendly.

Well he was stumped. This behaviour went against everything he knew. Girls didn't just sit down next to him, and especially not girls as beautiful as her. He tried desperately not to blush, glad for once about his bold colours. His orange fur usually hid his blush pretty well, and it was this side he turned slightly more towards her. Feeling like he deserved some kind of explanation for this irrational behaviour, he managed to find his tongue again.

"Did you need some help?"

Though his greeting was a little shaky, she decided to take it as her cue to sit down. She still hadn't got entirely used to chairs and the bizarre way they worked, but she had begun actually using them for their designated purpose. Even if she didn't always enjoy it all that much. It would look weird if she just stood though, and she'd already learned people didn't like it when you towered over them.

She had to bite her lip not to laugh at his expression when she sat down. He looked as if it was the strangest thing in the world to do, which started to make her worry of course that she was being weird again. After a few moments though she decided he was just having a weird reaction. Goodness knows why. She didn't mind though-actually, his shocked expression was quite enduring. Being closer she could now make out pale silver swirls marking his skin. Oddly enough, she found them comforting. They had an exotic hint which reminded her of the language of her original home, all those lightyears away...

She was snapped back into reality by his question. It was a fair one to ask given the circumstances, but she couldn't help but wonder if she looked like she needed help. She hoped not. Helpless was not something she was, nor desired to be. She opened her mouth to say no but at the last second changed her mind.
"Actually...yes, there is something you could help me with," Slightly shyer now, she glanced at him earnestly, "I don't suppose you have any books on transformations?" It was an odd subject to ask about, she knew that. But sadly it was one wherein she was in dire need of knowledge

It was even harder for him to muster up the courage to talk when she was this close. Thankfully she did need help which meant he could switch into his useful-librarian persona. It wasn't one he got the chance to use a lot but it was one he immensely enjoyed. Creasing up his nose at her request, he tilted his head questioningly. It was an unusual topic and it made him quite curious.

"I should imagine we have a few books on that subject somewhere. Erm, what kind of book were you looking for exactly? Fiction, non-fiction?" He liked the thought that he might be able to help this girl and so he was doing his best to act as friendly and as willing as possible. Although having said that, he did hope it wasn't easy to find what she was looking for. Then maybe she could stay a bit longer with him.

He knew better than to get his hopes up. True, it was lonely in the library but he was perfectly happy most of the time. And he could see no reason for someone like her to choose to spend her time here. She was far too full of life for this dusty old building. She was probably far too full of life for him too

Aww, he was sweet. He hadn't even made a single sneering comment which is what she had come to expect. True, Evelon was a far more magical world than most-she knew transformations occured here, as evident by any Evolver pet. But they weren't exactly the same kind of transformation she had gone through. Everyone knew Lucain couldn't transform, so they often scourned when she asked any questions about it. It was refreshing to be taken seriously.

She rewarded his sweetness with another smile, a grateful one.
"Erm...I suppose non-fiction would be best. To tell you the truth, I don't really know. I need to find out about a very unusual kind of transformation. I doubt it's happened before so maybe fiction would be better." How strange it was to ramble. She certainly never used to ramble. Oh, to only have coherent thoughts again! That really would be marvellous. Now she could understand why Darrian was so indecisive all the time. If she ever changed back she could only hope that this strange thinking-things-through approach would vanish with this body. Already she was doubting herself. What use would fiction be? She needed facts, an undoubtable answer. Invented musings would be little use at all

God, he almost melted when he saw her smile again. There was a kind of innocence about her which was very enduring. It was the same thing which had made her look lost. Seeing someone who looked so in need brought out his heroic side. It wasn't a particularly great heroic side, but he'd always done his best when it came to 'saving the day' as it were. Even if finding a book wasn't quite the same as slaying a dragon, he would do it if it meant she was more likely to find her way.

Her ramblings made him all the more curious. Clearly she had something specific in mind, even if she would not say it for some bizarre reason.
"Okay...well, how about the myths section? That's sort of a mix of both," He got to his feet very carefully, just avoiding knocking over the chair. Why did he have to be so awkward when confronted with someone pretty? Turning away to hide his blush, he gestured with a hand, "The section's upstairs if you want to follow me. I can also help you look if you like, though I understand if you'd rather sift through them yourself. Sorry if it's a little dusty. Not many people read that section anymore." It was a shame too. The many legends of Evelon were fascinating. He'd read almost all of the books in that section at least once. Mind you, it was reaching the point where he'd read most of the books in the library. New ones did not arrive as often as he would have liked. It was starting to be seen as somewhat of a dead investment
