A female kuhna wandered the streets of Nabias, not entirely sure of where she was or what she was doing. Around her, people passed by without so much as a glance in her direction. The crowd was thin, so that not one person brushed against her, making her feel kind of...detached from everything she saw. The only thing she could sense was the sun on her fur and the slightest of breezes brushing against her whiskers. Even her nose only seemed to be catching a dusty smell commonly found in places like this, particularly when there had not been a single drop of rain for a week.

She saw a young pup in her path twitching oddly on her street, with its mother watching with an amused expression, and assumed the pup was laughing. She slightly wished she was able to know what it was that caused the two and all passerby to be so entertained. She smiled gently at their expressions, and politely skirted around the group as she continued to...wherever she was going.

Drummle snapped his fingers quietly to a tune that no one could hear but him. The language of music came easily to him. When he was a young kit, or boy, as the humans called it, he had started teaching himself to play any and every instrument that he could get his hands on. Now, he was what some people called a musical genius. He loved the way the rythm seemed to come to him, and the way the melody stirred his soul.
He heard a small beeping, and realized that it was coming from his watch. He glanced at the watch, shrugged, and kept walking. Time didn't really matter to him. At the moment, nothing mattered to him, other than the new song he was trying to compose.
As he continued onwards, he realized that he was entering the town of Nabias. Why he was here, he had no idea. He tended to just go wherever the music seemed to take him. And now, for some reason, he was making his way into Nabias. Perhaps he would find his destiny here?

Tired of getting stepped on, the kuhna stepped aside into a small alley. When she emerged from the other side, she was in her humanoid body, flicking her long black hair with the purple highlights up into a ponytail to keep it away from her eyes. Life was so much easier for her when she could properly see...not that it was anywhere near easy anyway. As she paused to look around and gather her surroundings so as not to get lost, she tugged at the loose, vest-like garment she wore over her t-shirt, unaccustomed to the clothes that humans wore. It was only recently she had discovered how to change form. However, she still maintained her tails for some reason, and her ears when she got emotional. Ah well, she didn't really care about that, it was just that she found having opposable thumbs rather useful. Among other things.

As she reflected on the uses of this form, the girl had started moving, although she was not paying attention to where she was going. That being a very bad idea for someone in her position. A fact quickly proved as she collided with someone else, falling backwards onto the dusty street.

His mind on his music, Drummle wasn't really paying much attention to his surroundings. While his concentration was good at times...it wasn't such a good thing while he was walking around other people. He felt someone run into him, something he surely could have avoided had he been paying attention, and his breath left him with a loud oof!
Reacting quickly, he threw out his hands in an attempt to grab the person who was falling before she could hit the ground. Sadly, his reflexes weren't as good as his musical skills, and he was unable to catch the girl.
"Oh, dear," Drummle looked down at the girl, his eyes full of concern. "I'm so terribly sorry. I was off in my own little world...here, allow me to help you up." He offered his hand to the girl as the blush began to creep up his face. Two minutes in the town, and he was already knocking people over!

The girl blinked up at the boy standing in front of her. She caught a glimpse of his mouth moving and his hand extended towards her. She gave it a wary look and then decided he must've been apologizing to her. She took his hand and let him help her up. She noticed that the tips of his fingers were warm, and pictured him snapping his fingers. She had seen people do that before but couldn't figure out for the life of her why. She looked back at him and noticed a blush on his face. She gave a small smile, then inclined her head to him politely. Then she stood there awkwardly, not really sure of what to do next. She noticed out of the corners of her eyes that others were staring at them and shifted uncomfortably under their gaze.

Ooc: Would you mind if Drummle used telepathy to communicate with her once he realizes that she's deaf? Otherwise it's going to be REALLY hard for them to communicate xD

Ic: The girl said nothing, which confused Drummle. Usually by now, the person would either be yelling at him for being so careless, or reassuring him that it was ok. But this girl remained silent, saying nothing. The awkward silence made him nervous, even more so than the crowd of people who were beginning to watch.
"Erm, please, allow me to make it up to you. Would you like lunch perhaps? On me, of course." He studied the girl, waiting for the reply that wasn't to come.

The girl blinked at the boy in front of her. She saw his mouth move, but since she had been training herself to read lips, she didn't get very far. All she could make out was "please" and "you"...which didn't really help to understand. She didn't even know how to respond. She opened her mouth, trying to decide whether to mimic the vibrations she felt her distant family used when they moved their mouths. Talking, it was called. Sound. But then, uncertain, she closed it again, and just stared at the boy. A small blush was rising to her cheeks, from being in this awkward and embarrassing situation that she could to nothing to get out of.

Ic: Why didn't she speak? Drummle studied the girl closely, trying to figure out the problem. She seemed to be focusing on his mouth, which seemed odd to him. Hadn't she been taught to keep eye contact? Drummle's parents had worked very hard to teach it to him.
And then, suddenly, he knew. She was deaf. That would explain why she didn't answer, and why she was watching his mouth - she was trying to read his lips. His eyes softened as he looked at her, and he smiled in a friendly way.
Using his telepathy, he reached out with his thoughts, sending them into her mind. I'm sorry, I didn't realize that you couldn't hear. I hope I don't startle you by speaking to your mind, but I can think of no other way to communicate. I apologize for running into you. Are you ok? As an afterthought, he added casually, I'm Drummle, by the way.

The girl blinked again as the boy smiled at her. She saw a change in his body language and expression, but didn't quite understand why. Then her eyes widened and she jerked back slightly as his voice appeared in her head. Her mind reeled back from that strange...sensation, then after it faded, she mentally searched for an explanation to interpret what had happened to her. As she tried to decipher it, the words slowly started to make sense, and she smiled in astonishment, her eyes lighting up at Drummle.
Then it dawned on her that this must be what they referred to as sound; talking. This...was his voice? It was definitely strange, that's for sure. She had never experienced anything like this before. Suddenly, she realized that she should respond...but how? She nodded to Drummle to answer his question, but her brow furrowed slightly at the rest of the statement, since she could not say anything back.

For some reason, Drummle felt a burst of warmth as the other girl's eyes lit up and she smiled. He guessed that she didn't know how to reply, so he thought towards her, To talk back, just direct your thoughts towards me. I'll hear them. He didn't know why he was so anxious to hear her voice, even if it was just in his head. He had always tried to "fix" anyone who had problems, and this kuhna was the same. But she wasn't just a problem that needed fixing. She was a girl who had spent her whole life without hearing a single thing or speaking to anybody. If Drummle was given the chance to fix that, he would.

((Just a note, she's not going to be able to mindspeak on her own, so she can only reply to Drummle since he connected to her mind. Just making sure that was clear Also, her words will be kinda muddled at first, since she's never said anything before. I'll try and make them understandable for you though.))

As Drummle spoke into the girl's mind again, she did not recoil like she did earlier, and instead absorbed the words quite eagerly. His voice seemed like something magical and beautiful to her, who had never truly heard anything in her life. She took a minute to understand what he said, but not as long as before; a good sign, since it meant she was quickly learning to adapt. After understanding, her faded smile returned, delighted that she could respond, only to fade again. What was she supposed to say? Her name? But she didn't have one...
Then a thought struck her. He said something earlier, and she didn't like not knowing what it was.
Tank oo, Dummle. I...ah-m...ah-k. uh... she trailed off, trying to think of the words she wanted. Unable to think of any, she sent forward the feeling of wanting to know what he had said, and hoped to herself that he would understand. Her voice was sweet, but tinted with a strange kind of...accent, the result of her being deaf, even though it was her mind's voice, it still seemed to sound the same as it would be verbally.

The girls words were a bit slurred and hard to make out, but that was understandable. Drummle concentrated hard on her voice in his head, finally piecing it together. He sensed that she wanted to know what he had said earlier, and he smiled kindly. I apologized for running into you, and asked if I could make it up to you by buying you lunch. His smile widened. The offer still stands. What is your name, by the way?

The girl's eyes lit up again when she saw that Drummle had understood her attempt at communicating with him. She took a moment to understand his words, then smiled.
Lanch ood be nace... she faded off and her smile faded...again. It seemed like every time she got happy, there was some reason to not be so happy anymore.
nah-t 'ave nah-me. She glanced up into his eyes sadly. She suddenly wanted someone to understand what she had felt all this time; sending forward the feeling of not understanding people, and the horrible feeling of not being understood. Her parents, if she had been given a name, were unable to convey it to her when she was young...after a while, they likely no longer cared to even remember it.
Tears rose to her eyes and she rubbed them away, not wanting to reflect on the lack of attention and care she had as a child. She shouldn't have suddenly dumped that on someone she had only just met, too.

As her eyes lit up, so did Drummle's. For some reason, it made him quite happy to know that he was bringing her joy. He could barely make out the words, but he was able to grasp that lunch was fine with her. And then her face fell, and Drummle knew he had said something wrong.
He was just registering the fact that she had no name when her emotions hit him like a wave, crashing over him and swirling around him, drawing him in and under. He was swept away by it, and tears rose to his eyes as he realized what this girl had been through.
He noticed that the girl's eyes were teary also, and he gently reached out and placed a hand on her shoulder. It's ok. He put all of his strength into sending her warm, comfortable emotions. I'm sorry you had to deal with that. Is there any name you like? I would feel very rude calling you "hey you" or something of that nature. You know, you're actually lucky in a way. You get to be called whatever you wish! If I were able to pick my own name, I would make it Arpeggio, or Chord, or something having to do with music.
His smile returned as he tried to comfort the girl. He gently took her arm and pulled her slightly back, so that they were standing on the edge of the street where no one would take much notice of them. He didn't mind the observations of others, but he didn't like the idea of the girl being put on display as the "poor little mute girl". That was probably the last thing she needed right now.

The girl looked up into Drummle's eyes, and gave a soft smile, thankful for the kind understanding he sent to her. She was pleased to hear this...positive angle on her...situation. She could see how it was nice to be able to choose her name, but she had one problem. She had no idea what she wanted to be called. Being in her own little world, with next to no interaction, it wasn't like she had anything unique to her...that she knew of...yet. She conveyed this to Drummle, hoping he might be able to help.
Thinking along those lines, she suddenly realized that there was one term that she did not understand. She recognized it, but never understood what it was. Just as she thought about it, she was taken by the elbow and guided to the side of the street. Understanding, she cast a grateful thought to Drummle, only to change the feeling to curiosity as she remembered that one word.
Drummle, wad is...moo...mew...mus-eek? her mind voice stumbled on the strange word, but hey, at least she was starting to get the hang of it. She even mangaged to say Drummle's name properly, however strange her "accent" made it sound.
