The girl never even noticed the waiter's look, having seen that face so often, it was just a part of the background to her. Nor did she notice, being absorbed in her own thoughts, that Drummle seemed upset by it. After she had picked the plate nearby, he spoke to her and she nodded, somewhat embarrassed that the dish was one of the ones he had suggested. Next thing she knew, his hand was brushing her cheek, sending a warm flush through her body. She did not know what the unfamiliar feeling was, and only had an inkling about the reason why, but the one thing she knew was that she liked it. When he spoke to her, she found herself absorbing the words like a sponge and savouring the sound of his voice. The word 'darling' rang through her mind and she smiled at him.
Tank yoh, Drummle. She whispered to him, trying to stop herself from looking down again. Not from embarrassment or anything this time, but simply from the overwhelming feeling flowing through her. Suddenly, she wished to hear him call her...but he had no way of doing that, since she had no name. Without realizing it, she had taken his hand in her own, playing with his fingers absentmindedly, deep in thought.
She wanted a name now, more than she ever had before, and possibly more than she ever wanted anything. Yet, she still had no idea what to pick. She lightly bit her bottom lip and looked down at Drummle's warm hand in her own. Then something occurred to her. She paused, then looked up at Drummle, with a mix of determination and longing in her eyes.
Drummle. Will yoh nahm me? she asked. Then, feeling that such a sudden request might be a bit much, she looked down at the table.
Or...at last 'elp mah coos one.
