She wasn't offended by his doubt. To be honest he'd reacted better than she expected. Most people laughed, or at least acted like they thought she was stupid. Mind you, perhaps the giant chicken in front of him had something to do with that. In the face of danger it was common to lose your sense of humour.

She groaned when his foot slipped.
"Pretty much the opposite of that," She muttered quickly, "Run!" Not waiting for a response, she grabbed his hand and tugged him sharply away from the creature. Right on cue it lunged it's head towards him, barely missing him with it's razor-sharp beak.

"Just follow me!" She cried again, not daring to let go of his hand

His first instinct was to pull away when she grabbed his hand, but hearing that beak plunge into the ground where he'd been stood only seconds before made him think twice. Besides, it felt oddly good to hold her hand. Not just in a typical, 'because-she-was-cute' way, but also because it felt safe. He couldn't explain it but it made him feel reassured. He was surprised as well to discover how hot her hand felt.

After a few minutes running he felt out of breath. Normally he was in quite good shape, but she had to be some sort of olympic runner to go as fast as she was and keep that pace going. He daren't look back but he could hear the sound of pounding footsteps behind him. Evidently it was still chasing them

"Where are we going to go?" He yelled, uncertain she could hear him, "We can't head for the crowd. Not if this thing is dangerous." He could only imagine the effect such a creature would have. It would be chaotic

Hesitating, she turned to him with a grin. He was right of course. She had been about to run out into the crowd (mainly because there was nowhere else to go) but it would cause a lot of damage. Unfortunately she couldn't afford to pause long.

"Where can we go?" She pleaded, praying that he'd know the area better than she did. Hopefully he wasn't a traveller too. If he was she had no idea what would happen. Could they try and stop it somehow? Not in such a confined space. And not when it was so close behind them...

He was surprised she was asking his advice. Surprised but flattered. By the way she'd been dragging him it had been pretty clear she was the one in charge. He felt the strangest urge to please her, to impress her. Maybe because she impressed him. It was weird-she hadn't done anything particularly impressive, but it felt like she had somehow. Or that she soon would.

"I know a place," He answered, after a thoughtful pause, "It's this way." Gently tugging her (a lot more gently than she'd tugged him!) he did his best to lead her. It wasn't easy. The footsteps were worryingly close, and if he looked back he suspected he wouldn't like what he saw. Better to keep looking ahead and ignore those terrifying sounds coming from behind them

Oh yes, she definitely liked him. Not for the first time since meeting him, she regretted her vow not to take on a male companion. Most people would have freaked out at this point, or at least relied on her to take charge. But he'd just accepted the lead with no quarrels or complaints. He didn't even glance back although it had to have scared him a little.

When there was an opportunity, she risked a glance, then immediately wished she hadn't. It was closer than she feared, its beak mere feet away from a lethal jab. Still, she had been in much worse situations before and come out alright. Hopefully this guy would be alright too

"Here." He said suddenly, spotting the place. It was another small alleyway, but this one led to a medium-sized field. It wasn't ideal but at least it would be far away from anyone. Perhaps then they could figure out how to stop it, assuming there was a way of course.

The thought alarmed him.
"Hey, you do know how to stop this thing right? I mean, you seem to know a lot about it so I assume..." He trailed off, realizing what a lot of pressure he could potentially have put on her. So what if she did appear to know more? Maybe it was down to him to find out a way of preventing any more damage. If so, he was ready. He wouldn't let her struggle through this alone.

With this in mind, he let her run down the alleyway first, making sure she was safe before going down himself. He'd always felt right when he was protecting people. He wasn't the sort of guy who liked leaving anyone behind

She stumbled down the alleyway with a grin, turning her head back to face him.
"Oh, I know a lot about everything," She beamed, "I should be able to stop it. Maybe. I'm sure I'll think of something. I usually do." She raced down the narrow opening, backing up when she realized she wasn't entirely sure where it headed. Once more he took over, running confidently ahead.

"The thing is," She called after him, "This species is very unstable. One good whack and they completely break up. Literally, they just dissolve. But obviously we can't get close enough to touch it. So I just need something I can throw..." Unfortunately this place was far too nice to have any random bricks lying around. Not that she would have dared pause at this point. The alien was still chasing them, evidently hellbent on following them until it completed its task and made them lunch

Hmm. That wasn't exactly as reassuring as he'd hoped. Still, at least she had some idea. And she did make him smile. It baffled him how she could remain so breezy in such a dire situation. Maybe that was a good way to be though. It was certainly more appealing that focusing on the fact he could die any second.

"This is it!" He cried as he spotted the first glimpse of green grass. It was with some relief that he raced out into the field, pleased at the thought of being out in the open. No chance of being caught off-guard or surprised. Comforted by this thought, he decided to be brave and turn round. It was hard to stop running after going full-pelt for so long. She almost crashed into him too. Oops. He really should have warned her

"Aah!" She managed to stop just in time. Barely. Good thing she was used to running, "You should have warned me!"
"Sorry." He apologized sheeply.
"That's okay." Quickly, she also spun round. The alien was about five metres away. It seemed startled by their sudden stop. Not able to react as quickly as then, it staggered to a clumsy halt and nearly crushed them to death. Grabbing the male and diving to the left, Euphoria began to think quickly. This field was better than the alleyway but there was still barely anything around. How could she get it without a weapon?

Simple answer-she couldn't

"Hey, look out!" Ben cried out in alarm. It was too late. He watched helpless as the chicken/alien/whatever the heck it was leaned forward and struck out with its beak. It grabbed Euphoria with it, too quickly for her to dart out the way. He tried to help her but there was nothing he could do. It lifted her easily, despite her struggles.

She didn't cry out. He admired her for that. He was pretty sure if the situation was reversed he'd be crying like a baby by now. He was also sure that she would be helping him. Glancing around, he tried to find something, anything which he could use to help her. What had she said? Just one hit...
