He had never been expecting to change his life that day.

To be honest, Ben was pretty happy with his life. Why wouldn't he be? He lived in a smart little town, a bit small but otherwise pleasant. He had no struggles to speak of. He was popular and had enough friends to always have someone there without being smothered by them. All in all, as Kuhnas go he was fairly content.

In fact, if he had been told that his life would be changed by that single shopping trip he probably never would have gone. He hated being called shy, but he did tend to have a timid nature. He was always happier relaxing in the background than being shoved into the spotlight. News of any sort of adventure would almost certainly have made him think twice. Fortunately, he did go shopping.

And so he met her

"Oh bother!"

She was utterly lost. For ten minutes now Euphoria had been dashing around, trying desperately to find the thing she was looking for. Unfortunately it seemed like this body was a bit useless when it came to directions. Once upon a time she could have navigated around this small town like that. Now she was stuck running past the same library time after time, still not entirely sure whether she should be turning right or left.

She was running out of time too. She could feel it, the energy in the air. If she didn't hurry up then the egg would hatch and everything would be ruined. It had seemed like a simple enough task-find the egg, wait until it was on the brink of cracking open and then give it a good kick. Then all she'd be left with was a huge omelette to clean up. Only now it seemed like every stage of her plan was doomed to fail. If only she could find it...

Letting out a sigh, she collapsed against a wall. She needed to think

It was 2.20pm when it happened. He was just about to go buy some eggs (the irony of this would hit him later) when he noticed something. Being a quiet sort of person, Ben was used to noticing things. It was amazing how much you could spot when people didn't realize you were there. People smiling, fighting...searching.

That's why she caught his eye. It wasn't so much the fact she was beautiful (although she was-very beautiful indeed) it was the fact she looked so desperate. She was rushing about like a mad woman, darting and turning around so quickly it was making him dizzy. Then all of a sudden she just stopped. He saw the desperation turn to despair and she just flumped against the wall, looking like all the energy had been sucked out of her.

He knew he should ignore her. It was the polite thing to do after all. She might not want him shoving his nose into her business. And yet, being the gentleman he was he just couldn't. He couldn't leave someone who looked like that. So, like an idiot, he went over.

"Is something wrong?"

The voice made her jump. Actually, she found it rather rude. She had just been in the middle of a fantastic train of thought and it had been spoiled by one careless interruption. She turned to face the stranger, opening her mouth in preparation for some scathing retort-and halted. Staring back at her was a beautiful pair of bright blue eyes, gazing at her with concern. They belonged to one of the sweetest faces she had ever seen. Startled by her thoughts, she swallowed nervously and gently smiled.

"Oh, I'm...I'm fine really. It's nothing." Mentally she scolded herself. She couldn't have thoughts like that about anyone, especially not an ordinary human! It was refreshing though, to have someone approach her for a change. Normally she was the one who had go find people to talk to. This was the first time someone had approached her in about 50 years. Yes, it was a nice change indeed

He couldn't help but return her smile, although he wasn't sure why. It was more than mere politeness-she had one of those smiles, the kind which was infectious. In just one gesture she seemed to convey so much energy, so much life. To be honest he was a little blown away.

"Are you sure?" He managed to ask once he found his voice again, "I only ask because you seem a little distressed. Feel free to say if I'm bothering you though. It's a little weird to have a complete stranger ask you stuff after all." He laughed nervously, taking a step back so as to try and appear less threatening. He doubted he was threatening though. This girl was almost as tall as him and she didn't seemed in the least bit scared. Actually she was regarding him in quite a friendly way. Apart from her lovely smile she was keeping her pale eyes fixed on his. He was quite surprised to see that they were pink, not quite as bright as shade as her hair but still pretty unusual. He was also embarassed by the fact he noticed she had several cute freckles dotted over her nose. Trying to appear casual, he glanced away shyly. He didn't want to just stare at her after all

Her grin widened when she realized he was blushing, ever so slightly. Being a timelord she could pick up on things like that. She could also sense his heart beating a little bit faster. The thought made her head spin in a way which she definitely knew was wrong. Nope, she should end this now before she got completely carried away.

"You're not bothering me-actually it's quite sweet of you to ask. But no, really I'm fine. Just a spot of bother," Wishing it could have ended any other way, she pushed away from the wall and got ready to move, "I'm late as it is, so I'm going to have to go. Thank you anyway, and...have a good life?" Giving him one last wistful smile, she turned away and began to walk. Don't look back, don't look back. She forced herself to follow her own rules, cursing (not for the first time) her race for doing this to her. Not that she really meant it. She knew, deep in her hearts that it was the right thing to do. Humans just complicated things. She only wished that they weren't so compelling

"Oh, sure. Erm...you too?" He laughed, more than surprised at how sad he was she was going. It was ridiculous really. He'd only just met her. But he felt drawn to her. She was the sort of person who you suspected things happened to. Maybe that was it. She looked like she had been through a lot and yet at the same time still had so much to experience.

Or maybe he was just plain attracted to her.

Unwittingly letting out a sigh, he decided it was probably best to go back to whatever he was going to do before he spotted her. Ah yes, eggs. Right. His day was getting better and better. Somewhat more dreamily, he turned to head back towards the shop-

And, for the second time that day, something caught his eye

Only when she was a good ten metres or so away did Euphoria dare to glance back. The handsome stranger was gone, now indistinguishable from the crowd. She felt a wave of disappointment. It had been ages since Giraffe had left her, and to be perfectly honest she was starting to feel lonely. She needed a friend again, some person she could talk to and be smarter than and impress. Yes it was a selfish thought, but she also wanted someone she could have fun with and who would keep her grounded. Though she had barely known the guy, he had felt like he could have been that sort of person. Her feelings had rarely been wrong in the past.

Oh well. She had already decided against taking a male companion. It was simply too risky. You grew so close to people and she didn't want any chance of attraction. She certainly wasn't going to take someone who had that much of an effect on her. No, she'd find someone somewhere else. If only she didn't always feel that need to know everything. Thinking about the possibilities would drive her crazy for a long time (or at least, until she found that egg. She should really get on with that)

Frowning, Ben glanced round. No one else seemed to have spotted that strange light coming from the alleyway. Well, it wasn't really an alleyway. More like a little gap between two of the shops. It was barely big enough to fit one person down but he could see it expanded further along. It should have been almost pitch black but instead it was flooded with an eerie white light, unlike anything he'd ever seen.

Taking a step forward, he hesitated. What should he do? That light didn't exactly look safe. He wouldn't feel comfortable just ignoring it, just like he hadn't been able to ignore that girl. It wasn't like there was anyone he could tell either. No, the only option seemed to be checking it out himself.

Knowing he was possibly being very stupid, he ruffled his hair nervously and began to approach it. Hopefully it would turn out to be a better decision that his instinct was telling him it was...

A sudden twinge stopped her in her tracks. She could feel the air fizzing, literally crackling around her. Her hair had begun to frizz ever so slightly, as if it had been rubbed with a balloon. She knew all too well what that meant. The egg was hatching. She was out of time.

Quickly she licked a finger and stuck it out. Where was it coming from? Why couldn't she get her bearings straight? After what felt like forever, she finally realized. It was coming from behind her. Spinning round, her eyes caught a glimpse of light. Typically enough, everyone else seemed to be politely ignoring it. Breaking into a run, she began racing towards the source. She had only seconds now. If she wasn't fast enough...well, it didn't bear thinking about

"What on earth-?" He could hardly believe his eyes. Whatever he had been expecting to find in this alleyway, it was certainly not this. Whatever 'this' was exactly. It looked remarkably like an egg, though that was impossible. No egg he knew of was this big. Nor did they tend to glow.

Automatically stepping forward, he could do nothing more than gape. To be fair, the egg itself wasn't really glowing. The shell looked very much like any other egg, only slightly rougher and about twenty times the size. The glow was coming from inside the egg, shining through a splintered crack which was steadily growing bigger. It was only when it had almost completely broken in two that he realized what he was seeing.

It was hatching.

"Get out of the way!"

Yes!

Panting slightly, she skidded into the alleyway. She'd made it, just about. True, she may have left some very annoyed and possibly injured people behind her. But wasn't it worth it if she managed to save the world? To make an omelette you have to break a few eggs.

Speaking of which, where was the darn thing? Glancing about, her gaze settled on something surprising. That guy! The one who'd just spoken to her. What was he doing here? Evidently she'd been right about him. He had that curiousity, the sort of thing which made people such good companions to have. Pity he'd chosen this moment to display it. Barely having time to register his prescence and noticing just how cracked the egg was, she quickly yelled the first thing she could think of whilst sprinting towards the egg as fast as she could.

"Get out of the way!"

His first reaction was happiness. He was delighted to see her again, especially considering he thought they'd said goodbye forever. He even forgot all about the egg and the light for a moment. It was only when he processed her words and noticed the panicked look on her face that he remembered something wasn't quite right. Obediently he stepped back but it was already too late. There was a splintering sound and a blinding flash which mingled with her frustrated cry.

When he uncovered his eyes, the oval had vanished. There weren't even any shards of it left on the ground. In it's place stood a creature so bizarre that Ben knew he had to be dreaming.

"Is that a chicken?"

No no no!

She was too late. In a split second the egg had cracked open, unleashing the dreadful monster within. How could she be so careless? If she hadn't spent so long chit-chatting then she would have been able to stop this. It was all her fault. Now everyone around her was in danger.

Particularly this male. Freezing to the spot, Euphoria licked her lips and spoke very quietly.
"Technically, yes. Well, not really but it's close enough. It's er, an alien. And dangerous, so don't move. It hasn't noticed us yet." Thank goodness their vision was always a little shook up after just hatching. The chicken cocked it's head, glancing around the alleyway curiously. It was huge, about the size of a caravan. Fortunately this meant they didn't pay much attention to what was on the ground. So long as they were still it might not notice them at all.

Yeah right. Since when were things ever that smooth?

To say he was stunned was a bit of an understatement. Had he heard her right? Had she said 'alien'? But that was crazy! Oh fantastic, well that explained it. This beautiful creature was insane. Typical. He could never just find someone normal to fall for. But...well, the chicken was massive. Plus it already looked like an adult which shouldn't happen.

Maybe he was insane too.

Glancing back at her, he saw real apprehension in her eyes. Whatever she knew or thought she knew about this creature, she definitely believed it. Besides, she seemed to know more than him.
"An alien?" He muttered doubtfully. Well, he might as well go along with it. Alien or not, it looked like it could be dangerous, "What do we do?" Suddenly his foot slipped, grabbing the attention of the creature. It's large eyes focused on him, all too aware as it let out an angry squawk
