Millie's Christmas Event Pt. 2 (Slots full, great prizes!)

Postby MillietheWarrior » 12/19/2012 4:01 AM

.:Merry Christmas!:.

The town square was usually a rather dull place during winter. It was always too cold to go out and spend time at the local bakery or the vendors. But on this particular evening, something special had happened and the square had been transformed from empty and gloomy, to bright and lively. There were lights hanging from every rooftop surrounding the square, and the smell of gingerbread wafted through the many vendors. There were people milling about here and there, some holding mugs of cocoa and chatting animatedly to one another as they fed the geese who called the fountain in the middle a temporary home. Some of them were sitting near a large, roaring fire, recounting stories of Christmases long past, or simply chatting with one another about what they were getting their families in terms of presented.

Off to the side, a small, cheery bakery was open all night, handing out free gingerbread and inviting customers in for more yummy treats. A roasted chestnut vendor was off to one side, offering people warm chestnuts to heat their chilled fingers and fill their bellies. And beside his cart, there was a table set up with free hot cocoa, which would be welcomed after spending the cold night out in the open air, visiting the various attractions. Beside the vendors was a petting zoo, filled with beautiful, winter-time animals, including a very large, very docile reindeer.

A bright, blaring, cheery Christmas tree stood over the entire scene, glowing with Christmas spirit and lights in blue and red and yellow and green. Beneath it sat a multitude of presents, all eagerly waiting to be opened by the participants. Inside each present sat a small token to be given out at the end of the contest, though no one quite knew what the tokens were.

As you enter the square, cheered by the bright lights and atmosphere around you, you’re suddenly aware that you are being watched by what appears to be a small unicorn mare with a Santa hat perched precariously on her head. She’s holding a tray of warm, gingerbread cookies on her back, a feat that isn't as easy as it looks. “Merry Christmas!” she greets kindly, angling her body so you can take a cookie from the tray.

“And welcome to the annual Christmas Festival! I’m so glad you could make it!” She seems to notice your confusion at being addressed by a seemingly random horse, and quickly clarifies. “Oh, I’m the event organizer! My name is Twilight, and I decided to host this little shindig myself this year." She pointed over towards the cottage-looking bakery. “That’s my friend’s bakery, over there. Myself and a few others are giving away some lovely Christmas presents this year too. But you have to work for them!”

At the face you pull, she only smiles. “Come now, what’s Christmas without a bit of fun, huh? Nothing good in life is ever truly free, after all.” She smiles secretly. “And I have a few helpers hidden around here too. You may run into them if you look hard enough.” She makes a shooing motion with her head, waving you off with a bright grin. The little Santa hat she wears on her head nearly falls off as she bounces excitedly.

“Go on, go on! Have fun!”

(You can find the larger version here.)

Areas

Number 1, The Bonfire: Here you’ll find a large, cheerfully glowing bonfire. An older man is keeping it going, throwing a chunk of wood on it every now and again. It roars merrily, and around it, sitting on large logs, are different townspeople. They share stories of Christmases past, and of presents they’ll receive. You notice a large stack of wood, and something moving behind it? What could that be? As you look even more closely, you see an empty log waiting for someone to sit on it off to the side near the woodpile. Hm, maybe sitting for a few minutes and enjoying the fire wouldn’t be a bad idea, huh?

Number 2, the Christmas Tree: The tree is large. Far larger than any you’ve ever seen. How’d they manage to drag this here? A few children are standing around the tree, ‘ooing’ and ‘ahhhing’ over the pretty lights and ornaments. Below the tree sit boxes and boxes of presents (but not that familiar one you’re searching for, of course; that would be too easy). This tree could easily house a small army, and as you stare at it, you see something moving in the branches. Wait a minute…what?

Number 3, The Bakery: Here is Ceinwen’s bakery. The lights glow merrily inside, and as you glance through the window, you see a small crowd of people lining up for sweets. Two women are behind the counter, handing out treats that range from cookies to massive cakes to bite-sized candies. The smell is lovely, and you decided that maybe taking a peek inside won’t hurt. There are rows and rows of different treats everywhere you look, and lots of interesting places to explore. And…whoa, wait a sec. Did something just disappear behind the counter?

Number 4, The Petting Zoo: here is the petting zoo. They have a variety of animals, including baby Yingshee, an Ursice cub, a Mocha Piccu, a baby Torken, some Sahound puppies, and most spectacularly of all, an actual, real live, reindeer! They’re all housed in a cozy looking portable barn, strewn with soft, warm hay and blankets for the little ones. You see some children cuddle up with the puppies, and decide that maybe you could buy one of those feed packets that the proprietor of the petting zoo was selling and feed some of the babies. And you might even find something interesting hidden among the hay in the barn. Who knows?

Number 5, Roasted Chestnut Stand: A small, humble looking stand with warm chestnuts and a few extra tables laying about for people to sit and enjoy their food. There even seems to be a can to hold a warming fire. You’re welcome to grab some of those lovely roasted chestnuts and warm your hands, or take a load off and enjoy the scenery. Maybe take a look around the stand and the people hanging about; you might find what you’re looking for here.

Number 6, Hot Chocolate Bar: This has to be the second best stop so far, bar the bakery. Free hot chocolate? Thank you very much! There is a long table with rows of cups for you to grab a drink, and a hot chocolate dispenser at the far end. Plates of cookies and goodies line the table as well, covered from the elements by a large tent. You might want to grab a cup before it’s all gone, and take a seat before everyone decides to take them first. But wait…did something just run around the back of the tent? What’s with all those shadows? How odd…

Number 7, The Fountain: The fountain should be frozen over this time of year, but not this time. It’s been chopped open and a water heater installed to keep the few geese paddling about in it warm. They seem content as they honk at you, as if asking for food. A woman stands beside the fountain, handing out a slice of bread to anyone who wants one for the geese. The two benches on the outside of the fountain look somewhat uncomfortable, but maybe if you take a closer look, you’ll discover something of interest here. Who knows?

Dean approached the bonfire, still glancing suspiciously over his shoulder at the mare. No matter how long he'd been in Evelon, he'd never get used to the talking animals that seemed to populate the place. He'd been raised on the idea that anyone who wasn't strictly human was most likely evil, and unnatural at best; that wasn't likely to change anytime soon. A chill wind blew against him, and he flipped up the collar of his jacket to protect his neck. Christmas wasn't really his thing; it reminded him too much of how odd his family was, but he'd heard whispers of something...unnatural here. Something even more unnatural than usual. A poltergeist? Demon? Shifter? He was unclear on exactly what it was, but if it posed a threat to normal humans, he was going to track it down and exorcise it in whatever manner its species required.

"Ezra, what the hell are we doing here? Who's idea was this? For the love of-- I don't need any more Christmas-related, misguided misadventures. I've had it up to here with Christmas, the next carol singer that comes anywhere close to me better fu-"

"Now, now, Mia. Language." Ezra responded with a chuckle. "This is supposed to be fun, trust me, I'm not going to drag you off into the cold for any old reason." They were stood around the bonfire, Ezra, a tall man in his thirties with a long black coat. There was something rather scholarly about him, it wouldn't have taken much imagination to see him as a teacher or professor. (Even if he seemed a little young to be the latter.) His hair was dark and short, and he wore a small pair of small, wire-framed circular glasses at the end of his nose.

Mia appeared to be thinking about something, and then it dawned upon her. "Is this a date?" She was younger than him, and almost a foot shorter, with chin-length dark brown hair and coffee-coloured skin. Mia's style was quite distinctive, she wore a large, brown leather jacket and a pair of aviator sunglasses. In fact, she was rarely seen wearing anything else. Beside Mia, her guide dog Travis, stood solidly at her feet.

"Well, that depends entirely upon you." Ezra replied at length, turning a faint shade of pink that he was positive had nothing to do with the cold. This was rather out of character for the usually stoic alchemist.

"Oh, wow. My brother is going to kill you."

Ezra raised an eyebrow, and looked at Mia from over the top of his glasses. "The same brother that cowers in the gallery whenever I'm around?"

"... He has a thing about alchemists. You know what he's like."

Ezra made a non-committal noise and sat down on one of the logs by the bonfire. Mia followed suit. There was silence for a few moments, or rather, they were silent for a few moments. Everywhere else, people were chatting and the fire crackled, over by the fountain, geese... made whatever noise geese make, and there was the occasional animal noise coming from over by the petting zoo.

"I want to ask you something." Mia said finally and without waiting for Ezra to say anything she launched into her  question. "Okay, so. What do you do exactly? I know you pop by the bookshop and complain at Victoria and annoy Gabe on purpose and what-not, but...?"

"A lot of things, basically. It's not very glamorous,  but I keep an eye on everything. I make sure the werewolves have panic rooms built into their basements and that the apothecaries aren't substituting their Tilbury Amulets for bits of crystal. That sort of thing. Of course, I don't have any jurisdiction over anything that was never human in the first place, they've got their own rules."

Akari stepped out into the fresh air, and immediately, the scent of freshly baked goods hit her nose.  Normally, she wasn't one for such sweet, merry customs, but she figured that she coudl spare a few minutes.

As she wandered in the general direction of the scent, she spotted quite the oddly colored Frightmare who had a cookie tray on its back.  The sight was more than amusing, and Akari would've been content just standing a couple feet away and laughing her head off, but when she heard more of what it was saying, her interest piqued.

Christmas presents? she thought to herself, an eyebrow cocked and the corner of her mouth slowly pulling up into a small grin.  Most would have groaned at the idea of having to work for something like that, but Akari thought it was quite the idea.

She made her way closer and picked up a small cookie off of the event organizers tray and nodded her head in thanks before heading off toward the roaring bonfire.  She wasn't any danger to the event, but she couldn't help but head to the nearest fire first.  After all, fire was her thing.

You would never sing along
Cast them out cause this is our culture
These new flocks are nothing but vultures

Because they took our love and they filled it up
Filled it up with Novocaine and now Im just numb
And don't mind me, Im just a son of a gun
So dont stop, dont stop until your heart goes numb
I dont feel a thing for you

Image                  Lucario found himself next to a large blazing bonfire, surrounded by buildings and benches made of logs. It was very unlike him to be out and about, but he very much enjoyed Christmas and wanted to look at the various lights and decorations that were placed around the city. He had come to the town square expecting to find the usual pathetic display, but instead found what seemed to be a perfect holiday winter wonderland. He found that it all had been arranged and prepared by a little purple unicorn. How peculiar..., he thought to himself.
He looked around and a shining Christmas tree filled his vision. He could see piles upon piles of beautifully wrapped gifts, stacked neatly under and around the tree. He left the bonfire and headed towards the christmas tree.

It had been quite some time since Mira actually took a break from her spa business. But she figured she deserved a break. The best part? It just happens to be Christmas time. She wondered if the yonyuu would show up.

The two had been friends for as long as she could remember and were both interested in opening bath houses of their own. Mira had been the lucky one to get her business going first so she offered her friend a job at the second outlet. They were both proud of their success. Who doesn't want a spa treatment every now and then? Who?!

The serraptor walked quietly, finally seeing the blaze of the bonfire in the distance. She smiled at how warm it seemed even from this distance. She could hear people laughing and talking and generally enjoying themselves. This was different from the spa where it was quiet and relaxing. Of course there were different ways to relax. With or without a crowd. With music or a book instead. Everyone was different. This should be fun though.

She greeted others who seemed on their way to the same destination: the bonfire. She entered the area quietly while smiling at others who greeted her. The atmosphere was lively and the air was warm from the flame. She saw an older man toss a log onto the fire keeping it fed and bright. Mira found herself a nice log to sit on. Hopefully Reema would show up soon. Maybe she could find someone else to talk to for the time being.

"Sounds boring. Apart from the whole werewolf thing of course. You know... I've never met a werewolf." she said conversationally, glad to be somewhere warm for the time being.

Ezra looked faintly surprised. "Oh, but you've met Luke, haven't you? He's a werewolf."

"He never said."

"Well, it's no wonder what with the amount of hunters around. It seems as though everyone and their aunt is a hunter at the minute, we're suffering a epidemic. That's not to say that they don't have their place... but their place is most definitely not sniffing around a coffee shop that is run by a Pagan god, a fawn and a werewolf. Especially when they're all perfectly harmless... Somewhat harmless." For what it was worth, he was very dedicated to his job. Most people who did his job were hopeless bunglers who only ended up making things worse.

Mia laughed. "Surely it can't be that bad? Most people have no idea about this sort of thing, after all."

Little did Mia realize that there was in fact a hunter mere feet away from where they were standing. It was rather ironic, really.

(Forgot to say I moved to area 2)

Lucario looked at the large glimmering tree, along with the many children gazing in wonder at it's adorned branches and shining presents.  It was the biggest tree he had ever seen.  He wondered how on earth the purple unicorn had managed to wrap all these gifts and decorate the tree so wonderfully. It seemed almost like magic how the snow so perfectly dusted the limbs of the tree, but not enough to weigh them down. The snow reflected the shimmering color of the strung lights, throwing flecks of color all over the gifts and surrounding snow.
The tree was beautiful, but lucario had begun to grow thirsty. He looked around and across the square, noticed a row of tables where some of the children and onlookers were sipping at their hot chocolate. He walked towards the tables, but he got sidetracked while admiring the fountain.

Ah Christmas time. Tis the season to take a break from massaging the hairy backs of men, the furry feet of people's pets and everything under the sun! It had been a while since she had actually seen her dear friend Mira. They were lucky to have found each other as children . They had similar names, interests and interesting colors in their hair. As she approached the event she flew downward and landed just behind a purple frightmare who'd just introduced herself as Twilight. She joined the fun automatically and indulged in two cookies.

The air smelled of aromatic burning wood and fresh pastries from the bakery. She took note of the huge Christmas tree and sounds of the animals in the petting zoo. She sniffed again..
" Mmmmmm!"
Hot chocolate! She was glad Mira invited her. Where was she anyway? She looked around and tried to spot her long-time friend. Reema smiled and nodded and greeted others around her. While looking around she plotted out a route so they could visit everywhere before it was time to go their separate ways and run those spas people love so much.

Around the outer areas and back to the fountain at the center. Yeah.. Now to find Mira!

Lucario stopped and stared at his reflection in the fountain, until a passing goose cast ripples over the water. He stuck his paw into the water and swept it around to disturb the reflection. To his surprise the water was rather warm, the unicorn must have something to do with this... But that was another matter. He looked over to find that a goggle of geese was floating happily around in the fountain. The goose that had paddled through his reflection was back, and was honking demandingly. Lucario noticed a woman handing out slices of bread. That must be what the goose wanted... He kindly asked the lady for a slice of bread, and returned the the goose. He tore a small piece off of the crust and tossed it towards the goose. It happily gobbled it up and continued to honk. He flung the rest of the bread into the water, and a another group of geese rushed over to finish it off.
His paws were starting yo get cold, so he decided to finally head over to the tables of hot chocolate.

"I wanna hippopotamos for Christmaaaas, Only a hippopotamous will dooo!"

Deen had been gazing moodily into the flames, caught momentarily by a half-forgotten snatch of memory the festivities had unearthed. Then came the kids, maybe a school or church group, all shouting the lyrics to what had to be one of the most obnoxious Christmas songs ever. "Jeez," he muttered, rolling his eyes as they swarmed past him toward the highly-decorated tree. Sam had been lucky, he mused, laid up back in the hotel room with a broken ankle. Didn't have to deal with winter, or screaming munchkins, or talking animals that gave him the creeps.

Then conversation from a nearby couple caught his attention, and Dean grew alert. Seemed like the guy at least had his finger in the hotpot of paranormal society; perhaps he'd heard something about the strange happenings here.

Plastering on a devil-may-care grin, he turned to the couple. "Gods? Werewolves? Sounds like you have some interesting friends. Any of them hang around here?"

Ezra looked over the top of his glasses at the man in front of him. It was a glare that made most people back away swiftly, however, he doubted that it would work on him. "That depends entirely upon what you intend to do with that information. Somehow I doubt that you're going to invite them to lunch." He tensed almost imperceptibly, the conversion he'd been having moments before springing to mind. He could be curious, or he could be a hunter. There was a few solutions in the pockets of his coat that would cause enough of a distraction for he and Mia to vanish, however, Ezra didn't plan on doing that unless he really had to. It always caused such a fuss. That was the point, of course, but he'd always preferred subtly.

"Ooh, he sounds cute. Is he cute, Ezra?" Mia asked, turning her attention towards the stranger. "Hello, has anyone ever told you that you've got such a lovely accent?" At first glance, she appeared to be flirting, though, really she was just messing around. It was something of a habit. At her feet, Travis's ears pricked. He, too, seemed to be interested in the stranger.

"Are you really going to ask me that question?" he replied, clearly disgruntled.

"Sorry, Thursday always tells me whether guys are cute or not."

Mira decided to stand and look around the bonfire. Surely Reema should have been here by now. She smiled at strangers and walked slowly. She looked carefully at each face and form in the crowd. Everyone was having a good time enjoying cookies, treats, cups of hot chocolate the general festive-ness of tonight's festivities.
***

Reema walked around the fire cheerily greeting strangers and one-time spa visitors she recognized. It seemed almost every one was here tonight. Twilight sure did very well organizing all of this. Maybe she should invite the frightmare to come visit the spa some day.   Reema took note of something shifting in the shadows of the logs for the fire. Fire wood! That's what it was called. She had temporarily forgotten this. She shrugged, maybe it was a shy spirit or a child. Something harmless maybe? She chuckled quietly to herself as she thought "Santa's elf?"

She saw an empty log-bench and headed toward it. She decided to sit for a moment and maybe strike up a conversation with some one. Promote the spa while she was there. That was a marvelous idea! Unbeknownst to her Mira had just left that very spot to go find her. It seems these two will be playing tag without even knowing it!
***

Mira sighed and looked up at the huge Christmas tree a few paces away. It somehow made her feel warm and fuzzy inside. She wanted to see the faces of whomever those gifts belonged to when they received them. And what was inside? Some looked like they held pricy things within the pretty wrapping paper and under the shiny and beautiful bows. She turned back toward the fire to give her friend a moment to, hopefully magically, appear.

"Depends," Dean replied vaguely, the corner of his mouth tilting in amusement. No way in hell would he invite a werewolf to lunch, unless it was going to be served on silver platters. "Just wondering, is all. How about poltergeists? Spirits? I'm new to the area. Lookin' to find the same kind of crowd to hang with as I did in the good ole US of A." Well, 'hang with' was true in a sense. Not a complete lie like some of the other explanations he could've come up with. Wouldn't Sammy be proud?

A brief laugh escaped his lips as the woman spoke. "Sweetheart, since your friend here can't seem to find the words to describe me, I'll tell you..." He leaned in a little, though not close enough to disturb the canine at her feet. "I'm frikkin' adorable." His tone was low and intimate, though a light smile played about his lips. She was kinda cute herself, and if he hadn't been on a job, he might've made a play for her. Hell, it'd be worth it just to see her boyfriend's reaction.

Instead, he settled back on his heels, hands dug deep in his pockets, and waited on their response.
