Ava Liske

The afternoon sunlight filtered through the window, the curtains thrown back so that the small dining room could absorb the warm light. The small, square table next to the window was covered with a tablecloth, and set with pastel-colored teacups and saucers. In the kitchen, Ava bustled around, pouring hot water into the teapot, trying to keep herself busy so that her anticipation wouldn't get the better of her and drive her crazy. Her guest would be here any minute! She hoped that he would like it. Ava hadn't gotten the chance to ask him if he even liked tea or not.

Ava stared at the teapot for a moment, thinking, then looked up at the clock on the wall. It was almost four... She sighed audibly, her hands fiddling with the ends of her hair. Ava loved having guests, but the waiting was the worst part. It always gave her too much time to second guess herself and get nervous. "He should like it," Ava murmured to herself, trying to affirm the fact in her head, so that her gut would stop twisting itself in knots.

Sencha approached the quaint little house with a sunny expression on his face, his long ivory tail flicking back and forth in excitement. Ava had promised that scary man wouldn't be there this time, so he wouldn't have to worry about anything at all. Even if that man was rather pretty… but his touch wasn't gentle at all. Nothing like Ava's, who offered hugs and smiles that Sencha was fairly sure he couldn't live without. He walked up to the door, glancing at the flowers for a moment, then realized he was getting distracted and quickly knocked on the door, his horns almost going past the top of the doorframe. He bounced a little on his heels, looking around curiously, his cloak wrapped loosely around his shoulders, as he waited for the door to open.

Ava jumped as the doorbell rang, her body tensing up. Leaving the teapot on the countertop, Ava darted down the hall towards the front door, her sock-feet skidding on the wooden floor. "Coming!" She called, nearly running straight into the hard front door. Catching her breath, Ava opened the door to reveal the looming demon, and she grinned up at him. "Right on time! Come on in, please!" Ava moved aside, fiddling with the door handle with a restless energy. "I, um, I actually have a little surprise today."

Sencha's eyes lit up at the sight of Ava, and he smiled warmly, his tail twitching back and forth in an almost doglike happiness. "Ah, a surprise?" he asked in a singsongy voice, stepping inside and turning on his heel to look back at her, his eyes bright with curiosity. "What kind of surprise? Is it a nice one?" Sencha blinked and sniffed the air, the smell of tea hitting his nostrils, and his eyes widened a little bit. "Something smells nice…" He looked back at Ava, his smile widening. "Is that part of the surprise?"

Ava closed the door behind Sencha, then scooted past him in the hall, craning her head up to look at him. She bobbed her head in agreement, a smile growing across her face as she laced her hands behind her back. "Yep! I've got it all set up in the kitchen. This way!" Ava beckoned Sencha down the hall, then stopped at the entrance to the kitchen, gesturing towards the tea table, her face lighting up with excitement. "Tah-dah! We're having a tea party!"

Sencha followed her down the hall, his footsteps light despite his somewhat looming size, and he peeked into the kitchen. His eyes lit up at the sight of the pretty setup of pinks and whites on the table, and his face broke into a grin as he looked at her. "Ahh… that's so nice of you, Ava!" he chirped, a warm expression on his face as he chuckled. His eyes flicked to the small lid-covered platter on the table, and he tilted his head, his tail flicking in excited curiosity, but he said nothing about it yet. He figured that was part of the surprise, too.

"I figured that it would be nice to... do something like this?" Ava said with a small shrug, her voice wavering slightly as she tried to put her thoughts into words. "I mean, I've always wanted to have a tea party, so I decided that since you were visiting today, it would be a fun thing to do." Ava peeked up at Sencha, a hopeful light in her eyes. "Do you like it?"

Sencha stared at the table for a moment longer, then whipped his head around to beam at her. "I love it!" he exclaimed, his voice soft and airy with happiness. He reached out to take her hands, rocking them up and down excitedly. "This is so nice, so so nice! You're so nice!" he giggled, his nose wrinkling slightly in laughter as he pressed her hands, seeming to grow a little more energetic. "And it's all really pretty… thank you, Ava!"

Ava's eyes widened as Sencha grabbed her hands, and a smile spread across her face at his happiness. She began to swing their hands back and forth between them, liking the simple contact, and she bobbed her head up and down. "I'm glad you do." Ava blinked, realizing something, then she turned away slightly, her hands still trapped in Sencha's. "Um, the tea should be ready by now. It's green tea; I didn't have anything fancier, but..." Ava turned back to him, then shrugged her shoulders slightly, a sheepish smile on her face as she sighed. "I hope it's still good."

Sencha shook his head, the smile still plastered over his face. "No, no, I like green tea very much," he said with a happy light in his eyes. He looked down at her hands, quite small in his own, and a sort of warmth touched his face as he grinned, finally letting go of her hands. "You probably need your hands to take the tea off the heat…" he said sheepishly, rocking on his heels and folding his hands behind his back. "Can I help you with anything?"

Ava blinked, then she smiled up at him, shaking her head. "There's not really anything. You're my guest, so it's my job to make sure that you're comfortable!" Ava exhaled a little puff of air from her nose, crossing her arms in front if her chest. She looke up at Sencha again–goodness, he was so tall–and then reached out to forcibly move him towards the table. "I'll bring the tea, so just wait for the next part of the surprise!"

Sencha followed the pull of her hands, an easy smile on his face as he half-stumbled after her. He blinked at the table with all its delicate arrangements, then at the small chairs, and an unsure look passed over his face. "Ehm… Ava…" he murmured, looking back at her. He tapped his index fingers together nervously, then glanced back at the table. "I'd rather not break anything… should I just kneel on the floor by the table? I'm sure I'll be tall enough, anyway…"

"Eh?" Ava looked up at Sencha with a startled look, confusion and then understanding slowly crossing her face. She frowned, putting a hand to her chin. "Oh dear... I'd feel bad if you had to kneel on the floor." Ava looked at the table, then up at Sencha, a disappointed light in her eyes. "I guess they are a bit too small for you." She sighed, her hands dropping to her sides as she stared at the tea set, searching her mind for a better solution. There had to be something. Even Ava knew that it was rude to let her guest sit on the floor.

Sencha blinked at her frown, looking a little surprised, and he shook his head. "Oh, I don't want you to feel bad…" he murmured, an earnest look in his eyes. He looked around, then blinked when he spotted the couch in the other room, and he stood up, his tail flicking. "One moment…" he mused, a smile spreading over his face as he padded into the living room, ducking under doorframes. He picked up one of the couch cushions, which looked almost the size of a regular pillow in his hands, then walked back into the kitchen, peering at Ava behind the cushion. "Does this work?"

Ava blinked, looking a little surprised at the pillow in Sencha's hands. She looked at the pillow, then up at Sencha, a small, bewildered smile beginning to creep on her face. He almost looked like a puppy, so willing to please. She let out a long breath, then scratched at her hair. "If you'll be more comfortable on the chair, then that should be fine, I guess..." Ava paused, her hand falling away from her head as she realized something. A glimmer of excitement flashed in her eyes, and her head snapped up. "Wait a minute! I have an idea!" Ava dashed into the living room, the floorboards creaking underneath her feet, and she quickly returned with throw pillow from the couch. She held it up to Sencha, a victorious smile on her face. "This way, I can sit on the floor with you!"
