Return to Town of Nabias

Nothing Ever Happens in This Town {P}

The small motor on Eli's scooter puttered rhythmically underneath him as he drove through the streets of Nabias. It was just another Tuesday afternoon in a small town in the middle of nowhere, so main street and the square was pretty much dead. A few of the old people sat out on the porch of the cafe, playing checkers, but other than the occasional car, which was always headed somewhere else, no one else was there. Eli cut the motor of his bike, parking it haphazardly in front of the little row of shops that lined the square, facing the courthouse. No one would get onto him for his horrendous parking job, because they knew him, or his mother. Besides, it wasn't like anyone was going to care.

Even though the town had settled into its Tuesday afternoon doldrums, it looked like romance was alive and well. Eli turned on his bike and picked up the bouquet of roses that was carefully strapped on the back. His mother always got onto him for being careless with the flowers, so Eli was careful to brush off any invisible dust that may have collected on the plastic wrapping. Eli's mother was always nagging him about something or other. She wasn't suited to run a business, Eli thought, and she always made a big fuss about all the sacrifices she made to keep food on their table. Eli usually ignored her whenever she started talking about that, because he was usually the one to work the cash register, or cut the flower arrangements. He even delivered the flowers for the customers. It was easy work, and it certainly beat any other summer jobs, so Eli didn't complain. It wasn't like he had anything better to do in this small town.

Sighing through his nose, Eli looked at the address on the card attached to the bouquet, then up at the shops. It was for some lady who worked as a clerk for the local attorney. Eli walked along the sidewalk, peering through the windows inside at all the shops, pausing when something caught his eye. He didn't want to go in just yet. Girls always made a big fuss about receiving flowers, and always talked in loud voices so all of the other girls would get jealous. Why, for little old me? Who on earth could have done this? Thank you, sweetie, for bringing me these be-autiful flowers! Postponing the inevitable, Eli paused in front of the closed travel agency shop, looking at the big map of Sa'fir Coast.

The town may have been sleepy and dull, but that didn't concern Fele much. Her recent adventure had lead her to a small camp near the rainforest, where she had found seven gold coins that looked ancient. Now here she was running towards the town where she might lose the men, the ones who wanted the coins back. She could hear the men behind her yelling, though they were so far away that she couldn't make out the words. It wasn't much further before Fele found herself in the town, though it looked like some ghost town. The men didn't seemed bothered to chase her through the town, maybe it was some deserted place after all.

She mused that much as she entered the first part of the main street, where it seemed a small amount of people were. They gathered at stalls full of goods, like a street fair. That was the most time she had to think about it too, as Fele found herself running straight for one of the novelty carts parked blocking the street to traffic. It was full of fruits, something she noticed as she readied to try and jump over it. Instead she clipped the edge of the wooded wall and sent the cart tumbling to the ground with her, the sign she saw made her laugh as she laid there too. "Farmers Market, open every Tuesday." Painted in bright colors that would have indicated a spring time theme, but that wasn't the reason she was laughing as she flipped up onto her feet once more.

Several angry voices called out at her, everything from looking out to crazy kid. Which meant it was time to keep moving, not that Fele would have stayed there anyway. Turning around as she went dashing further into the town's main street, Fele was actually having fun with the men chasing her. She'd ditched school on a Friday to go out for this, and now she'd been playing a sort of cat and mouse game with these men for four days. It was anything but a dull Tuesday for Fele as she came sliding in front of the courthouse, bouncing over and rolling down the back of a parked car. Now all that was left was to find a place to hid or a way out of town. Flipping out of her roll off the car, Fele was still moving forward preparing to keep running when she felt something with thorns clip against her arm. That was seconds before she went tumbling into some kind of office. Around her several female faces looked stunned at her blowing through the door, a few didn't look happy either.

Bottles smashed, I raised my hand
How can you all even stand?
And why is there joy in this poison? Oh
Faking smiles and confidence
Driving miles to capture this excitement
I can't take anymore

You're never gonna get it
I'm a hazard to myself
I'll break it to you easy
This is hell, this is hell
You're looking and whispering
You think I'm someone else
This is hell, yes
I am in hell

One moment, Eli was minding his own business, staring at a faded brochure of some vacation home on the beach. Behind him, there was some noise coming from the farmer's market, but that was kind of normal. People got excited about their vegetables in Nabias. Eli didn't really understand it. He held the bouquet of roses in his hand, careful to not prick his hand.

The next moment, the bouquet was knocked out of his hand to the sidewalk, rose petals scattering everywhere, and a girl was dashing into the lawyer's office. Eye's wide, Eli gaped for a moment, then he picked up the bouquet, brushed it off, and hesitantly followed the girl's path into the chaos that had ensued her entrance. Papers were flying, women were screaming, and everything was in disarray. The crotchety old lawyer had even descended from his offices to ask what in heavens name was going on. Flowers in hand, Eli stood in the doorway, watching the scene as if it was a television show. Slowly, Eli looked down at the tag, then back at the women rushing about, trying to pick up all the scattered files. There was no way he'd wade into that mess, just for a stupid delivery.

As he turned away from the door, Eli looked out at the street, only to see a gang of rough-looking men charging towards them. Gasping, Eli shrunk back against the doorframe, caught between a rock and a hard place. Maybe there was time to get to his scooter and scoot the heck out of there.

The chaos that followed was anything but new to Fele, considering chaos (or reckless in some cases) seemed to be her middle name. Nothing was more amusing as she pulled herself up and watched for a moment, even the old man who might have needed a nap growled straight at her. She flashed him her best smile, trying not to laugh out right while she patted her pocket. The smile she had fell right off her face as she realized the coins were gone, and right then she began working to find them. Going about this by first tossing aside files as scattering more papers that were on the floor, before moving on to tear apart one desk.

With all the papers from the first desk now scattered across the room, Fele caught sight of the small black velvet bag in which she had stored them. Dashing for the doorway she snatched up the small bag then smiled at the boy standing there, her eyes only momentarily taking in the men who had been chasing her for a day now. They were likely locals since no one seemed alarmed to see them, that and the fact that their camp had been fairly close to this town. That didn't mean she was going to stand there and let them catch up to her, but trapped in an office wasn't going to make a get away easier.

A snap decision she snatched the boy who she'd nearly run into earlier and pulled him along as she ran back out the front door of the office and started down the sidewalk. Laughing Fele glanced back at the poor boy she was dragging with her, "Know any good hiding places? Cuz I don't think there going to just leave us be now." Her typical half thought out idea of fun was the nearly get you killed kind of crazy, but hey maybe he could at least give her a spot to think up a way out of this.

[Welcome back! I'm glad that you and your grandpa are safe and sound]

Eli let out a yelp as Fele grabbed onto him, and for a moment he struggled. Digging his feet in, Eli leaned back, the fabric of his blue and white striped shirt stretching. "Hey, wait a second–" Eli tore himself free, looking distinctly ruffled, his blue eyes staring wide at the strange, rough-and-tumble girl in front of him. He opened his mouth to ask what the he'd she was doing, she spoke.

His eyebrows furrowed, and he considered saying no, he wouldn't go with this crazy girl, but then he heard a shout from behind him. Crap, that gang was coming straight for them. And from the looks of things, it seemed like they were gonna attack Eli as well, just for being next to their original target. Eli narrowed his eyes, glaring at the girl for getting him caught up in this, and in a sudden movement, Eli grabbed onto the girl's wrist and dragged her back towards the gang. "I have a bike!" He quickly said, just in case she began to fight him, and he pointed to his scooter bike waiting next to the side walk.

Fele laughed when the guy she had grabbed managed to pull himself free, but she stopped all the same to hear him out. “Okay, what is it?” She was smiling at him in a good natured way as she watched the men turn the corner, they weren’t as dumb as she’d first thought. Fele’s eye brightened when he began to pull her after him, though she followed willingly enough once she knew which way they were going. “Ooo...okay!” This was getting better and better, though those men were getting closer sound of them. “Don’t worry, they can’t hang on to anything.” She meant to make him feel better about heading right back at the angry men, but instead she sounded far too excited.

As they rounded the corner Fele had what she thought was a brilliant idea, she had a second small velvet bag on her only it was a really dark blue. She’d brought it intending to get her sister Mishi one of the stones out of that old tomb, but things had changed. Pulling the bag with the pretty rocks she’d found along a stream on her way there, “You want these back? Then catch!” She yelled as she tossed the bag with all her strength. “That should buy, like a minute, maybe.” She grinned like a mischievous at the guy she was following. The bag flew over the men’s heads, and caused them to look up. They were watching as if zipped through the air and landed on the sidewalk across the street from them. For a moment they didn’t believe she’d given those coins up so easily, but then why keep chasing her if she had? Either way they didn’t seem to want to take the chance as they rushed after the little bag. “We got a few seconds before they realize I just gave them rocks.” That was all she could say, once those men noticed it was just rocks this would likely get worse.

Eli clambered onto his scooter, shifting up on the seat so that the girl could fit on the back behind him. He didn't even want to know what the girl was doing behind him, but Eli could hear the shouts from the gang getting closer and closer. Crap, crap, getting beaten up was the last thing that Eli wanted to do that day. Jerking the key in the ignition, the scooter started up with a small roar. "Hang on!" He yelled, gunning the motor and zooming out of the square into the side streets. "Why the heck are you picking fights with the gang?!" Eli yelled behind him, pitching his voice so that the girl could hear him over the sound of the wind.

Fele laughed wildly as they took off, watching as the men located the bag she’d tossed at them. It would take just a little longer and they would realize she’d once more duped them, but she’d have a head start this time too. “I didn’t pick a fight with them. I just took something they stole.” That likely didn’t paint a better picture of what was happening, but honestly Fele was caught up in the moment and unbothered by the ethics of most people. “Besides, they should have locked it up if they wanted to keep it.” She loved the feeling of the wind against her face as they hurried along, at one point she would have even stood up except she couldn’t manage a good enough footing to do so. Instead she settled for leaning around the young man every couple of seconds, to see what was ahead of them.

Eli just sped up the motor on his scooter as the girl talked, deciding that it was the safest bet to get as much distance between them and the raging gang. "Yeah, but why drag me into it?" Eli yelled, confusion and fear and the heart-pounding excitement letting Eli voice his thoughts. "I don't even know your name!"

Eli turned down a side street, planning a route in his head. If he took the circuitous way home, they should be able to lose the gang. Eli glanced at the girl, who was leaning over his shoulder. He straightened the bike, glaring at the road. He'd have to figure out how to lose the girl, after that. Eli wasn't sure what his mom would do if she knew what he had been doing within the past five minutes.
