The Boys from Abaddon [self, L, maybe G]

Light, fluffy, might be experimental. Timeline may skip around a lot. Well, mostly light and fluffy for now. We'll see.

Reaper always said he didn't remember how he and Heat first met, because it sounded more romantic that way, as if they had always been together. For better or for worse, that wasn't true. He remembered it full well, with unusual clarity for such an early recollection. He had been five, and his mother had brought him to an unfamiliar home. A large man, whom he would later know as Uncle Torch, tried in vain to coax him out from behind his mother's legs, before eventually giving up and talking to her instead.

He was left to wait in the playroom while his mother talked with the man. He sat perched gingerly on a beanbag for a while, half hoping she would come back. Only when it became apparent that she was going to be gone a while did he creep from his chair to the neatly packed bins of toys lining the opposite wall. He popped open the red plastic lid on one of the bins and peered down inside.

“What're you doing?”

Reaper jumped at the sound of a voice and turned to look at the stranger at the door with a guilty expression. It was a boy, about his age, dark-haired and dark-eyed. “Those are my sister's,” he said. “You don't want those. The good ones are all in here.” With that, he walked over and knelt down beside Reaper, so close that their legs and shoulders bumped against each other as the other boy tore the lid off a different bin and rummaged around inside. “Look! I got a Black Doom Dragon. He shoots fire if you press this.” The boy pushed a plastic tab at the back of the dragon's head, and the plastic flame attachment shot from its mouth. “Cool, right?”

“What's a Black Doom Dragon?” said Reaper, dumbfounded. The boy looked at him as if Reaper had just sprouted an extra head.

What's a Black Doom Dragon? You mean you've never seen Demon King Challenge before?” Reaper shook his head no. “You've gotta watch it! Come on.” The boy grabbed him by the hand and dragged him off to another part of the house. There was a TV along one wall and a case of DVDs next to it. The boy looked impatiently through these and pulled one out, presenting it to Reaper with a proud grin. “See? Doesn't it look cool?”

Reaper privately thought it looked rather frightening. There was a man on the cover standing on top of a pile of skulls while silhouettes of dragons reared in the background. But the other boy was beaming at him so insistently; Reaper wilted a little under his scrutiny and said, “Sure...”

“Right?” the boy said. “Here, I'll show you the first episode!” Reaper watched him insert the disc into the player with dismay, and looked forlornly at the door. He supposed it was probably too late now to try and escape. The opening theme song started blasting from the speakers, and the boy came to sit next to Reaper again. Reaper stared at the places where they touched, shoulders and legs, but the boy didn't even seem to notice. Reaper edged away from him. He was too warm, and Reaper didn't like it when people crowded him.

The show wasn't as bad as he was expecting though. The show was more colorful and less focused on skeletons than he had expected, and by the time the ending theme played, he was enjoying himself.

The show was alright, but half the fun was listening to the boy's running commentary: “And did you see when he fight the other guy? He was like 'pow', and then it was like 'wham!' and he flew into that wall! Did you see it?”

“Heat, where are--- Oh, hey Reaper. Are you two boys having fun?” The large man from before walked by the door and peered in, smiling. Reaper stared up at him, slightly alarmed. The boy beside him--- Heat--- said, “Yeah, dad. Can you believe he's never seen Demon King Challenge? It's like he's an alien.”

The man at the door chuckled, a low furry sound that came from somewhere in his chest. “Alright, time to wash up. Barbecue's starting in the back yard. Tell your sister, okay?”

“Barbecue? Yes!” Heat leaped up and pelted out of the room. From somewhere down the hall, Reaper could hear his voice: “Embeeeeerrrr! Dad says there's a barbequuuueee! I'll eat all the chicken wings if you don't come!”

The man was turning to leave, so Reaper ran up and pulled on the edge of his shirt. The man turned around and smiled down at him. “Hey there champ. You need the bathroom or something?”

“Where's my mom?” Reaper asked.

“Oh, she's out in the back. Just go downstairs and take a right. Can't miss it.” Reaper mumbled a 'thank you' and ran past him, making his way down the stairs and taking a right, just like he'd said.

There was a big sliding glass door, and through it he could see his mother setting up a big black contraption. Before he could say anything, he heard another set of feet pounding down the stairs. He turned to find Heat, hands damp and dripping, rushing toward him.

“Hey! Did you wash your hands yet?” Heat asked.

“I don't know where the bathroom is,” Reaper replied.

“Oh, that's easy. It's that one.” Heat pointed out a room across from them, on the other side of the living room. Reaper went and washed up as best he could. By the time he finished up and walked into the yard, everyone else was already there. His mother beckoned him closer, and Reaper trotted to her side.

“Hey, kiddo. You're just in time. Look, Uncle Torch is about to light up the grill.” She picked him up so he could get a better look. Torch--- for Reaper was still reluctant to accept this imposing man as an uncle--- was setting up what looked like a large black cauldron on a stand. He hadn't been able to see it before, but from his new vantage point he could see that it was filled with coals, with a metal grill over it. It looked old, as if it could use some cleaning. Reaper didn't like it much.

There were two other children with them that he hadn't seen before. An older girl with glasses stood at her father's left side, conversing with him in soft tones. She had a round, pleasant face and wore an old Wonder Woman t-shirt. On his opposite side stood Heat, straining on the tips of his toes to see over the edge of the grill. A toddler ran around in the background, chasing something that Reaper couldn't make out. Reaper winced and braced himself for wailing when he saw the little boy trip and fall, but he simply picked himself back up and kept running.

“Alright, let's get this show on the road,” Torch said, rubbing his hands together like a magician about to do a trick. Reaper's eyes snapped back to him, small hands fisting in the fabric of his mother's shirt. The big man held out one hand, and flames guttered to life along the backs of his fingers. He turned it so the palm faced up, and the flames leaped into his cupped hand, growing higher and higher. Reaper watched, wide-eyed, as he lifted the grill cover and dipped his hand into the bowl of coals, setting them ablaze. He extricated his arm and waved it, as if ridding himself of a bug clinging to his skin. The flames on his skin went out.

He did a little flourish which turned into a bow. The theatrical motion looked strange on him, broad and nothing like anything from a magic show. The others started clapping, and Reaper found himself doing the same out of habit. “Thank you,” he said, in his deep rumbling voice. Reaper reconsidered: perhaps Torch could pass for a trained lion. Would he be able to fit a man's head in his mouth? He didn't want to think about that. The idea of Torch trying to eat someone wasn't improving his already dire impression of him, and Reaper had nightmares enough without giving himself cause for more.

The girl walked up with a platter of meat, and Torch bent down to kiss her forehead. “Thanks, sweetheart,” he said, and began transferring the plate's contents onto the grill with a pair of tongs. Reaper felt his weight shift as his mother set him down, and thought forlornly that he would have liked to be held a little longer. Still, he didn't protest, and settled for staying as close to her as he could.

“Ah ah,” Angel said, pushing him away from her. Reaper made a small noise of protest, but she remained unsympathetic. “Go play with your friend. You two were getting along pretty well before, weren't you?”

Reaper did his best to look woebegone and pitiful, but his mother was having none of it. It had been a long shot anyway; she usually didn't fall for that kind of thing. “Come on, don't be ridiculous. You should go play around, have some fun, not stick to me the whole time. Go on,” she said, giving him another gentle shove with both hands. Reluctantly, he peeled away from her.

When his mother said 'play around', what she really meant was play around with other kids. He didn't get what the fuss was about, since he liked playing by himself just fine, but she always said he ought to try and make some friends.

Looking around at the other kids in the yard, he surveyed his prospective options. He was a little curious about the girl, but he couldn't quite work up the nerve to approach her. She was still standing by her father, which made Reaper slightly resentful. How come she was allowed to stick by her dad, but he wasn't supposed to stay with his mom? Maybe it was an age thing. People were always telling him he couldn't do something until he was older. Maybe she was too old to play games with kids like him. That left the two boys, which was a pity, since he usually got along better with the girls at his day-care.

A blur of motion out of the corner of his eye caught his attention, and Reaper turned to see the toddler haring off again, this time brandishing a stick in the air. Reaper shrank back from him. He was too far away to get hit, but he still didn't want to risk it, what with the way the boy was swinging it back and forth. Didn't he get tired, running everywhere like that? Reaper felt tired just watching him.

Left with no other options, he wandered over to were Heat was sitting. Someone he knew was still better than a stranger, even if that someone was loud and talked about things he didn't understand.
