Nice and peaceful, Nabias offers a great place to start your journey or stock up on supplies before heading out to brave the rest of the wilderness out there. They also have Barakka's largest hospital facility to treat all sorts of injuries you could get out there. (+2 Precision)

A Bird in the Hand... [Mousen & I]

The damned bird had run him all the way to Barakka. He had crossed the stretch of Lambastia, had nearly caught it at the Dead Coast, had lost it in the Natural Museum of the History of Salt (what kind of museum had a two-inch thick tunnel running from one entrance of the building to the other??), and had spent four days at sea as a result, chasing after the stowaway. Ves was prone to seasickness. It had been an unpleasant experience.

He wasn't even sure if it was a bird. It sort of looked like a bird, he supposed. It had a tail and something that resembled a beak and these tiny little wing-appendages that somehow managed to lift it off the ground anyway. But no legs, no feathers, and most freakishly, no eyes. Also, it seemed to be made of plastic.

Ves sighed and ran one hand through his dirty blonde hair. His tracker had told him the bird was steadily heading towards Nabias. Thankfully, the thing slept (or did some approximation of sleeping), because its movements always stopped for a few hours each day. The duration and time of day was always a bit different, though there seemed to be some pattern Ves hadn't quite worked out yet. But the point was the bird slept, so Ves could sleep too.

And tonight he needed to find a place to sleep. Maybe he'd look for a bar, too. Ves hitched his bag higher on his shoulders and started down the road to Nabias. He hadn't had a drink in months--maybe even a year or two--but after four days of vomiting on a boat, chasing down a plastic bird from another world that could change its size...he felt some alcohol was in order.

The pub stood close to the center of Nabias, it was faintly respectable looking, if a little far away from the other bars and taverns which lined the streets of the little jungle town. Alessa ran a business not a front for a crime ring, it was going to be run according to her standards. It was a place where someone could get a drink, maybe even some food if she could find a willing chef.

That was, of course, if she had any customers. In all fairness, Alessa's pub, The Dog & Body, wasn't doing too badly. The people of Nabias liked having a drink somewhere non-threatening, but, today? Today was dead.

Her pub was spacious enough, and surprisingly airy considering the amount of dark-stained wood and the sweltering humidity this area of Evelon provided. She'd hung a few mirrors here and there, and where the reflected light of the mirrors couldn't reach there were lamps with large, intricate shades made with perforated brass and tiny, brightly coloured glass beads. The tables were simple, with odd chairs and stools placed haphazardly around them. It was cute, for a little pub out in the middle of nowhere.

In lieu of actually making money, Alessa had cleaned the guest rooms and made a halfhearted attempt on her own rooms before giving up and was now polishing the tables. The woman sighed, wiping her forehead against the back of her hand. She was statuesque in figure, tall, olive-skinned with long dark hair pulled back from her face. Although, if Alessa had been a statue, she was no Aphrodite, but Minerva, ready to lead troops into battle. Her sharp features, and broad shoulders suggested someone who would not be taken lightly.

Which, perhaps explained why the baskets of yellow and orange flowers positioned in front of The Dog & Body, hadn't been touched.

Ves stopped in front of a tiny squat shack, the third in a line of similar-looking establishments. He peered at the sign, whose fading, peeling paint seemed to read “The Hungry Demon”, and frowned. The windows were dirty and dusty, and the door stood a little off its hinges. He sighed. Was it really this hard to find a tavern in Nabias that didn’t look like he’d either be poisoned from the uncleanliness or murdered by its occupants?

And from previous experiences, Ves had found he made a semi-popular target for thieves and criminals of all kind. He was of average height for a man—which made him exactly the same height as his taller-than-average sister—with a slight build that just seemed to scream “pick me, I’m vulnerable!” Which he had of course ceased to be many, many years ago, but evidently his appearance hadn’t followed in line with physical abilities. His skin was pale, lightly-tanned, and under a fringe of short, dark-blonde hair, he had a pair of blue-grey eyes. Emphasis on the grey. But people had always called them blue when he was younger: no doubt the effect of his sister’s brilliantly bright blue eyes. They wanted their twins to match, however poorly Ves and Noelani actually did.

He kept walking east, heading deeper into the town. Thin moonlight and the glow of the street lamps lit his way. He was thankful to see that the lights were growing brighter and becoming more numerous as he continued on. Hopefully this meant he’d be able to find a relatively clean, safe place to stay soon.

Ves glanced down at his tracker as he walked. The bird was still moving, circling somewhere on the other edge of town. It had “woken up” shortly before he departed the ship; Ves estimated it’d be “sleeping”, if that’s what it did, by the time he woke in the morning.

As he put the tracker back into its side-pocket on his bag, he glanced up at the building to his left. A sign hung a few inches above his head, proclaiming it to be a pub by the name of “The Dog & Body”. His gaze swept over the solid-looking wooden door and the merrily glowing windows. His spirits lifted.

“God, finally,” he said, pulling open the door and stepping into the pub.

He glanced around in surprise at how empty the place was. He felt a trickle of unease. Was the warm, welcoming appearance simply a front? Or was this place just really, really expensive? Ves hitched his bag higher on his shoulder and took a few more steps in. Well, whatever the prices here were, he was much too tired to try and find another bar. If he was lucky, maybe they rented out rooms too.

He spotted a woman cleaning tables near him. There didn’t seem to be any other non-customers present, so he walked over and cleared his throat.

“Excuse me,” he said, smiling, “but could I get a drink?”

On quiet days like this Alessa would often think about ringing her mother or one of her sisters. She liked to check in with her family, although she wasn't always entirely honest with them. Business was always booming, yes she had been on a couple of dates (and no, she didn't think she was going out for a second date), that sort of thing. Recently, however, she'd thought more and more about ringing Zari. They hadn't spoken in a good few years, Zari was something of a loose canon and was made even worse by the characters at that awful circus she traveled with.

That being said, a few months ago a young man had walked into her bar. He'd been a friend of Zari's, but had left the circus and instead spent all of his time wandering around, going from place to place and supporting himself with whatever odd jobs he could find. Of course, he was an irresponsible sort of fellow, but nice enough to Alessa. He'd even given her Zari's new phone number. Apparently she'd moved in with someone.

Perhaps... it'd be worth getting back in contact. Maybe things had changed...

Alessa was so lost in her train of thought that it took her a moment to recognize the sound of the door being opened. She stood up and smiled, brushing down her apron and trying to look professional. "Hello," she said, making her way over to the bar. She hadn't seen this guy before, that and her local's intuition told her he wasn't from around here. Passing through, perhaps? "What would you like? We've got beer, cider, spirits. I don't keep the supplies in for anything too fancy, but pick your poison and I'll see what I can do." Alessa only kept in what sold, and the patrons in Nabias had rather predictable tastes.

"Oh," she said. "I've also got some of the local speciality, if that peak's your interest. If I'm honest, it's moonshine with a bit of a kick. Some people say it's slightly hallucinogenic, but I've never seen anything weird. So, make of that what you will." Alessa along with many, many of her competitors brewed the region's traditional drink with one of the plants that grew abundantly in the nearby Tengel. The locals liked it, it was strong enough to get you very, very drunk, but was slightly less soporific than many other drinks. Provided you didn't drink yourself under the table, it meant that you could get home without much trouble.

Ves blinked at her a couple of times as she listed off various forms of alcohol. What did he used to drink? He was too tired to think. Ves rubbed one hand over his face. It helped, a bit. "Um…I’ll take the moonshine," he replied, latching on to the last suggestion he heard. Her last few words trickled into his mind as he spoke. Hallucinogenic, did she say? He wished this whole mess was just a big hallucination. The drink couldn't be worse than anything he normally had to deal with.

At that thought, he pulled out his tracker and glanced down at it. His tired eyes focused to stare down at the glowing blue dot. The bird had wandered a little closer to the center of town. As he watched, its dot moved a bit to the east, then stopped. A few seconds later, the same thing happened. Ves resisted the urge to scowl at the screen. Dumb bird.

He put back the device and yawned. "Oh, also!" he said, turning back to the woman. "Are there rooms here I could stay in for the night? Or could you recommend somewhere relatively clean and relatively safe nearby?" If the pub did have rooms available, that would be incredibly convenient. It meant no more tired stumbling outside at night, trying to find a decent-looking place to stay. Any room at all would mean he'd finally be able to sleep in a bed that didn't keep rocking the entire night and prevent him from getting a good night's rest. Just that thought eased a bit of the tension in his shoulders.

((Sorry! College is a bit intense rn. ;u;;;;; ))

Alessa pulled a dark glass bottle from under the counter, she poured a measured amount into a long glass. The liquid was a pale green, and if one brought their nose to the glass, the liquor inside would smell fresh, and a little like sap, with something of a bitter edge. Without asking, Alessa pulled another bottle from the counter and diluted it down with what was probably sparkling water, but may have been lemonade. She didn't care if he complained, if you were going to be drinking this stuff, you drunk it watered down the first time. After that, well, it was your own damn fault if you got drunk on it and saw snakes hanging out of the walls, or something. She popped the glass on the bar. "10 keystones."

The woman was very happy to hear that this stranger was looking for a place to stay. The little bit of extra cash he represented would tide her over during this quiet patch she seemed to be going through. Plus, it was lucky enough he'd stopped here. Alessa prided herself on keeping the rooms clean and safe, no member of staff would be robbing you blind during the night in her place, no way. "Look no further, we've got some rooms upstairs. Double or single? The rooms all have locks and three of the rooms are en suite. Plus, I promise you the cleanest room this side of the Tengel." She'd worked hard to make her bar and inn the best, and that included fitting a lot of plumbing. It was the main reason that tourists to the area often favored her accommodation over that of her competitor's.

"I don't recognize you from around here. You passing through?" She added conversationally.

((No worries. I completely understand. ^.^))

Ves passed over the money without complaint and took the glass. He peered at the liquid, which was an odd shade of green, and shrugged. He really had no idea what was or was not good alcohol. As long as the woman wasn’t trying to poison him, he’d be fine. He lightly sniffed the drink though, just in case. Smelled a bit like sap. Interesting. The smell wasn’t strong enough to mask the scent of most of the more common poisons, so he figured it was safe.

He took a large gulp of the liquid then sat up, instantly alert. That was strong. And strange. He shook his head a few times, shaking his senses back into place. “Um…” What was she saying? Rooms. Right. He needed a place to spend the night. “Right. That’d be great! Single please. Cheapest you have.” He shot her a grin that was ever so slightly self-deprecating. Chasing down accidental inter-world travelers wasn’t the highest-paying of jobs, it turned out. His operations ran mostly off of selling any little trinkets that fell through (after he had judged them likely harmless, of course) via his sister in Medicai. He hadn’t gotten anything even close to sellable in a few weeks, though, and now he was running a bit short on keystones.

Ves drank some more, noting an odd shift in his hearing this time. He placed his glass back on the counter, the clinking sound fluctuating wildly in pitch. He frowned at the drink. What, exactly, was in this thing? Maybe his lack of sleep was mixing poorly with the alcohol. The woman spoke to him again, and he almost missed her question, so caught up in listening to the tone of her voice change from deep to shrill and back again.

“Oh, yeah, I’m from Lambastia. Near Roraldi Forests,” he answered. “I think- I hope- I’ll just be in Barakka for a little while, and then I’ll be heading straight back.”

He thought about the bird again, and he scowled. Then he took a few more drinks of the moonshine.

As he set down the now-empty glass, he considered his present situation: he was sitting in a bar in a strange town in the middle of the night, chasing after an inter-world interloper, and drinking something green and weird across from a pretty woman. A bit of a loopy smile spread across his face. It was like something out of an old hero’s tale.

Fueled by an odd mixture of plants distilled into liquid form and far too few hours of restful sleep, Ves leaned closer to her and grinned. “I’m on a mission, you see.”

"The place is empty right now, I'll put you in one of the en suites. It makes no difference to me. 75 keystones a night, and that's as cheap as you're going to get here without being bedmates with the cockroaches." Alessa didn't mind giving him one of her better rooms, he seemed nice enough, practically respectable in comparison with a lot of her clientele. She didn't think he'd give her any trouble.

Ah, so he didn't want to be doing whatever he was doing here. The scowl told her that much. She was about to ask him what kind of business he was in, when she got her answer. "A mission?" Alessa wasn't sure if she believed him. He was about half way through that glass of spirits and she could tell he wasn't used to the stuff. But he was cute, in a sort of slightly down-on-his-luck kind of way, and Alessa felt like humoring his tall tales.

"All right," she said, leaning a little on the bar. "What sort of mission are you on? Out here in the middle of nowhere, in a little town filled with poachers and failed archaeologists." Maybe he was one, some kind of academic looking for a lost temple. She wondered if she had the heart to tell him that the people who frequented those temples knew exactly where they were, thank you very much and you couldn't count something as a discovery just because you'd never seen it around before. Still, if he ended up as an offering, it'd be his own stupid fault.

Ves nodded at the price. A clean room, with a bed that stood still while he was sleeping in it? More than worth seven and a half of these drinks...whatever it was. He couldn't stay here--or really at any inns--for too long at that price, though. But he had packed for camping, as always, and wasn't too concerned about sleeping outdoors.

"That's very generous of you. Thank you." And it really was. Ves wouldn't have expected many innkeepers to offer a customer nicer lodgings just because they weren't being used. Especially not here, not by the looks of the other places he had passed by.

He grinned as she leaned closer. "Strange...items, and creatures, appear near me sometimes, see," he began, abandoning his usual tactic of keeping his business secret. The alcohol, or the lack of sleep, or the presence of a nice woman who seemed interested in his work, or maybe just his sheer frustration with this particular mission had loosened his tongue tonight. "Otherwordly things. Sometimes dangerous things. And I have to catch them before they cause too much chaos. This time, it's a size-changing bird that flew all the way to Nabias. It's on the outskirts of the town right now."

He nodded to himself a few times, absently turning the glass in his hands. "Damn bird," he muttered.

The shared bathrooms were larger than the en suites. When the place was this quiet, it honestly made for less cleaning. Plus, he seemed like he wouldn't be any trouble. "My pleasure," she said. "I'm just glad to have any business at all today. It's not normally so bad, but between tourist season ending and some new anti-poaching regulation it's left me with no customers." It wouldn't scare off the poachers for long, once the local law enforcement got bored of skulking around things would return to normal. As bad as she felt for the animals, she relied on these people for part of her custom. If they kept this up for too long, they'd eventually run her out of business. Alessa didn't think that they had the backbone for that, but nevertheless, it was a possibility.

She looked at Ves, eyes twinkling with amusement, eyebrows raised. "A magical size-changing bird from another dimension?" She leaned over the bar, chin resting on her hand. "Are you serious? Either you've had too much jungle water already, or you've got a real fondness for tall tales, mister." Alessa realised she'd never asked him his name, she'd need it check him in.

"Oh, speaking of which, what name are you checking in under? I can put you down under an alias if you need one for your mission." Her tone wasn't malicious so much as teasing. "I wouldn't want your otherworldly bird-friend to get suspicious."

"My name is Ves. No alias for me." The corner of his mouth lifted, a motion that gave his smile a self-deprecating air. "No danger from anyone who can read. Just…uncontrollable talismans and the odd crazy creature." He exhaled, long and slow. "And oh, I wish it was just a tall tale. This thing is definitely real, and just about annoying as it gets. I have no idea where it’s trying to go, but it sure picked the worst ways to get there."

He paused, and blinked. It was possible she’d take offense to that last comment. He looked at her, his gaze roaming over her face, taking in the amused sparkle in her eyes and the pretty shape of her smile. He felt his face warm ever so slightly.

"Well, I mean, that is, except for here, of course," he said, finding himself fumbling for words. "This isn’t a worst way…I’ve spent nights in much more awful places, much crappier inns. That’s not to say your inn is crappy! Sorry, no, it’s really quite nice. And clean! I like that it’s clean. It’s lovely, really. You’re lovely, and I-" He stopped, blushed.

He didn’t know what had come over him. But she really was lovely, with long dark hair and fine, sharp features. And she seemed kind and competent. Ves liked competence. But he didn’t even know her name yet.

"And…what’s your name? I’ll take an alias too," he said, lips twitching up into an awkward grin.

"All right, Ves it is. Nice to meet you," she offered out her hand. There was a slight hesitation when Ves stood by his story, a slight twitch in her fingers. "Really?" Alessa asked. "You're not joking? Do you have proof?"

She noticed his eyes flick over her face, and self-conscious for a second, tucked a loose strand of hair behind her ear. It wasn't that she- well, it was a little strange being around someone reasonably her own age, who was perhaps, at least, attempting to be charming? Strange stories aside, that was.

Although, in reflection, she seemed to be dealing with the pressure better than Ves. "Well," she began, diplomatically. "The jungle isn't exactly easy to get through, my inn's and my own respective loveliness aside." She was laughing a little despite herself. "Um. Thank you, though, I think."

She matched Ves' smile with one of her own. "I'm Alessa."

Ves felt his face grow even redder. He lifted his cup to take a drink and hide the blush, only to find that it had already been drained. He coughed a bit, even more embarrassed, and set it back down on the counter.

Seeking a new topic of conversation, he latched onto what she had said earlier. "Proof? I, uh." He felt like his thoughts were swimming through mud, slowly and sluggishly reaching him. What did he have to prove it to her? He frowned, his brows furrowing. "Come with me tomorrow and see for yourself?"

He lapsed into silence, staring at the empty glass on the counter in front of him. Why had he just done that, invited her along? She wouldn't want to go tramping through the jungle, chasing a stupid bird across the continent. Sleeping in tents and eating preserved food and whatever he could find outdoors. Leaving her lovely, clean, quiet inn.

"I mean, um." He stood up, one hand sliding under a strap of his backpack. "I...it's probably time for me to turn in for the night. Sorry, I haven't paid for it yet, have I?" He fumbled around, pulling out 75 keystones and handing them to her. "Gotta get an early morning, chasing down that bird." He gave her a lopsided smile. "If you might point me to my room...?"

Go with him? She thought about it, he was a little tipsy and she didn't know that she could trust him or his offer. Go alone with a strange guy into the jungle? She considered Ves, his average build, the blush across his cheeks which by now had spread to the tips of his ears -- well, she could probably take him. By her estimation she was a little taller, and knew the terrain better. Besides, he was sweet, and it wasn't like she had any other customers. Yes. She would go and see whether or not there was a size-changing bird out in the jungle. "All right. I'll close up tomorrow morning and meet you by the front desk."

In some ways, Alessa was a little disappointed when he handed her the money. She'd been half-hoping for another wild story (or awkwardly stuttered compliment, whichever came first). Then again, there was no point in getting too sentimental. "Thank you." She went behind the counter to fetch his key and handed it to him. "Your room is up the stairs and the first door on your right."

Alessa was close to turning in for the night herself, she'd give it another half hour or so and see if there was anyone last minute who wanted a room for the evening. Otherwise, she'd probably have a drink and go to bed. "Goodnight, Ves."

Wait, she was agreeing to go with him? Ves opened his mouth, then closed it again. A small smile tweaked up the corners of his mouth.

"Oh, I uh. Sounds good. Yeah. I’ll see you tomorrow then," he said. "Thanks for staying and chatting with me, Alessa. 'Night to you too." He turned towards the stairs, then paused and turned back. "You…you have a pretty name. It suits you."

Then he headed up the stairs, a feeling of joy rising slowly up in him. It continued on as he walked into the hallway, unlocked his room, and stepped inside. The silly smile was still there, as he set his pack down and looked around. The room was clean, the furnishings neat and well-matched. Nothing less than what he’d expect from an inn run by Alessa.

Alessa…. It really would be lovely to have someone else with him tomorrow, out in the jungle. Someone to greet in the morning, whose companionship and smile he’d have with him as he chased down this bird—at least for a while, anyway.

Ves took a quick shower before getting into bed. Tomorrow…well, he had high hopes for tomorrow. As he was drifting off to sleep, he realized that for the first time in many years, he was looking forward to the chase tomorrow would bring.
