Smooth Tentacles [Solo]

Postby Silver » 02/21/2016 6:52 AM

Jacket? Check. Pants? Check. Belt? Check. Boots? Check. Tentacles? Check.

Teal obsessively smoothed and straightened all of his clothes to be extra, extra sure that they looked good. There was no room for error today. He would have to look his freshest if he stood any chance of succeeding. Not that he was ever not fresh, of course. After checking everything again for what had to be the hundredth time, he grabbed his roller and headed out.

He tried to look confident yet nonchalant as he stood waiting for the match to finish. When the whistle sounded, he could feel his heart start racing. It seemed like it was going to take forever. Teal took that time to worry about his outfit and whether or not he had polished his weapon enough.

"Emmy!" he called out, waving to a girl walking up the stairs out of the play area.

"Emerald," she corrected while he quickly closed the gap between them. The look on her face suggested that she was less than impressed.

"Right," Teal responded. Apparently she didn't like nicknames. Good to know. "So I was wondering..." he began, though he was finding it a bit difficult to finish that question. Meanwhile, Emerald pulled out a rag and started cleaning her gear with it. She couldn't look less interested in what he had to say.

"Would you like to go out for lunch with me?"

Emerald slowly looked up at him in disbelief. Sure it was Valentine's Day, but she hadn't planned on... having plans. Especially not with a guy she barely knew in an entirely too flashy jacket. As she opened her mouth to respond, she caught a glimpse of the roller he was carrying. The glimmering gold trim was absolutely gorgeous. She just had to spend more time with it.

"Okay," she replied. Teal let out a huge sigh of relief. It felt like she had taken ages to answer, and he could hardly handle the suspense.

"Great!" he said, sounding surprised. For as much as he had hoped, he almost didn't expect to get this far.

"I got a reservation at Hippocafe in 15 minutes so we can head over now," he explained. How bold of him to already have a reservation lined up. Though she didn't seem to mind. Or notice for that matter.

"Mhm," she nodded. Her focus was still on the detailing of his roller, but he didn't seem worried. Perhaps he just didn't care. She had agreed to go on a date with him, and that's all that really mattered.

They walked for a few minutes in silence, and Teal found himself increasingly uncomfortable with it. "So, how did it go?"

"Hmm?" Emerald asked, tilting her head to one side. She hadn't been paying enough attention to know what he was talking about.

"Your match just now!"

"Oh. It was fine. We won."

Teal let out another small sigh. This girl was impossible!

The rest of their trip to the cafe remained silent. Teal couldn't think of anything to say, and Emerald simply didn't mind the quiet. In a way he was lucky that he couldn't figure out what to talk about. She much preferred the silence to idle conversation anyway.

They finally arrived at the cafe and Teal waltzed right up to the counter. He leaned against it, looked up at the server and said, "Yo! I've got a reservation for two. Name's Teal." That sounded cool, right?

The server wanted to roll her eyes, but she managed to resist. This wasn't even the first time she had seen this sort of thing today. Every squid was trying to act cool in front of their dates. It was all rather silly, but at least it was harmless.

"Here's your table," the server said, waving her hand over it. "Is there anything I can get you?"

"Here," Teal pulled out a chair for Emerald to sit on, but by the time he was done, she had already sat across from him. "Or not," he mumbled under his breath. It was like she didn't even realize he was there!

"Lemon tea please," Emerald looked up at the server for the first time since she got to the cafe.

"That sounds nice. I'd like one too." Did he have any opinions of his own?

While the server was off getting the drinks, Teal pulled a small box from an inner pocket of his jacket. "Here, I bought you these," he said, setting the box on the table in front of her.

Emerald looked blankly at the box for a moment before picking it up. "Thank you," she said, placing the box back on the table without opening it. Well, she acknowledged his effort at least. It was enough to make him optimistic for the rest of their date.

"Tea for two!" The server was cheerful as she plonked two glasses and the pitcher of tea down. This was too happy a day to be bummed out about a smidge of rudeness here or there. "What's next?"

"Roast duck for me," Emerald said while pointing to it on the menu.

Now that it was his turn to order, Teal looked conflicted. His plan was to get a cheeseburger, but it suddenly occurred to him that cheeseburgers were not very classy. Especially not sitting next to her roast duck. "Uh, I'll have the salmon special," he blurted out the first thing he saw at a glance. By the time he realized that he didn't like salmon, the deal was already done.

Emerald was too busy pouring herself some tea to see the panicked look on his face. Not much bothered her, which was probably a good thing for Teal's sake. Now if only he could stop worrying about appearances long enough to realize that she didn't care. Maybe they were good for each other after all.

While sipping his tea, Teal finally realized that Emerald was looking at his roller. A huge smile stretched across his face. It made him swell with pride to see someone checking out his handy work. "Ya like it? I touched it up this morning."

Emerald simply nodded. It was nice enough to look at, sure, but she would most love to see it in action. They had played together before a few times, which is how they knew each other, but it was hard to get a good look while under fire. It was so much nicer up close and not covered two different teams' worth of ink.

"I opted for the gold version," Teal said proudly. It was a very expensive option, and he couldn't resist the chance to brag about it. He just knew that girls would love it. Totally worth it.

"Can I...?" she said, reaching out a hand.

"Wh..." Teal paused and turned to his weapon. Oh of course! She must want to hold it. He didn't blame her. "Oh here! Be careful; it's really heavy," he instructed. It took him standing up and grabbing the roller with both hands in order to pass it over the table for her. Her tea nearly got knocked over, but she managed to catch it just in time.

Emerald grabbed the weapon with only her free hand and pulled it close to inspect the mechanics. Unlike other weapons of its kind, it contained a powerful but heavy dynamo motor. It was superbly powerful though clunky. She could go on and on about how she found the various parts fascinating, but she didn't.

A pleased smirk sat comfortably on Teal's face. He didn't even mind that she wasn't really paying attention to him. Seeing her fawn over his prized possession was good enough all on its own.

"Wait!" Teal said, grabbing Emerald's hand as it reached for the roller. "You can't open it here!"

"... Right." In her excitement to see how it worked, she had forgotten that rule. Using a weapon inside of a restaurant was a pretty big no go. They'd be kicked out for sure. "You will have to show me after," Emerald said, setting the roller down next to her.

Teal blushed, pulling his hand away from hers. For a moment there it was practically like they were holding hands! Wait. What did she just say? He didn't care what they were doing, as long as he got to spend Valentine's Day with her. "I'd love to," Teal chirped out. "Show you later, I mean. The roller."

Poor Teal probably would have continued rambling awkwardly on were it not for the food arriving. He was quietly relieved when the server interrupted him to set the plates down. That was, until he smelled the salmon. Teal let out a quiet sigh and looked up at his date. At least she seemed happy...
