Bouquet

There was no company quite as beneficial, in Cassia's mind, as the company of flowers.

Being both a florist and the owner of the store itself, she was lucky enough to spend a lot of time around things in bloom. Each morning was a thrill to her, and this one was no different; a blissful smile was on her face as she unlocked the front door, looking up to the bell above it as it jingled when she entered. Things had been tidied up from the night before, but there was still a pleasant air of hard work. Autumn was a busy time in her business, for sad reasons as well as happy ones, and it suited her perfectly.

The front of the store had been decorated, in usual fashion, to celebrate the coming of the harvest season. As well as garlands of orange and yellow paper leaves strung above the windows, a large cornucopia sat proudly in the display, with floods of multicoloured flowers pouring from within. It made Cassia happy, to see people stop outside and marvel at the work they'd put into it. Even if they didn't venture in to purchase anything, it was nice to be appreciated.

There was plenty on the books. Plenty of bouquets and arrangements that needed to be picked up or sent out. Getting to work quickly was the best option.

Her work bench was worn, a hand-me-down from her grandmother who had owned the shop before her. Even though the risk of splintering from the old wood was high, she couldn't bring herself to buy a new one. It was a fitting tribute to her, to let her still be involved with the flowers for weddings and funerals long after she had passed away. Cassia couldn't possibly feel sad when a piece of nana was always with her, every day, as she worked.

The abundance of pretty colours and scents wafting from the fresh stock was so delightful, she could barely contain herself.

Cassia scanned her jotted-down list of orders, and nodded concisely at the sight of the first. An autumnal bouquet. Not for a wedding, or any formal event - she remembered the young man who had come in to request it. Well dressed, rather shy, quite embarrassed about the communication issues between them. He shouldn't have been shy to use the interpretor with her - that's what she was there for!

Being mute did have its obstacles, but she had always been determined to find her way around them. Hence, she had employed someone who could translate her signing back to the customers.

The translator was a lovely girl, with an equally lovely voice. Cassia was very glad that she was at least blessed with hearing, because it was always a wonderful thing, to wave to her as she came in and listen to her chirping 'good morning, ma'am!' back. Not having a voice of her own was a very meagre price to pay in her mind in exchange for the sheer quantity of other wonderful things in her life.

She pondered over her selection of flowers before choosing two orange roses, laying them down on the table in preparation. That would be a good start. Now, what else..

Orange was undoubtedly her favourite colour - perhaps she was biased, being a redhead - but she knew she had to balance it out with other hues. Gold carnations? Yes, that would work very nicely, imitating the vibrancy of autumn. Along with those, she selected some yellow chrysanthemums, followed by some white ones, orange germini and red oak leaves. They definitely looked pretty, all laid out next to one another. The next hurdle was arranging them in an attractive manner.

Her tongue poked out the corner of her mouth as she began to make the arrangement, concentrating hard on her task.

Bouquets were undoubtedly her favourite thing to craft. Cassia was a romantic at heart, if she was entirely honest, and having sweethearts come in seeking a token for their partners always thrilled her. Of course, she was too busy to go out delivering them herself (and her translator may protest about it too), but if she could have, she would have handed each of them over personally. Not for the want of any gratitude or praise from the client - she just enjoyed the surprise and happiness on the recipient's face.

The shape of the bouquet was forming nicely, particularly enhanced by the green of the oak leaves.

The finishing touches were just as fun as putting the flowers together. Cassia smiled as she pored over the selection of ribbons, absentmindedly trimming the stems as she did. Would more orange be too much of an overkill? A simple white could work, and make the whole thing look much more elegant. Gold would be too flashy for something as subtly pretty as an autumnal arrangement.

Yes, the white would do nicely. She snipped off a length of it and held it up, checking how it looked alongside the flowers.

The ribbon was tied in an ornate bow around the flowers, over the top of the string holding them together. Also underneath the ribbon was the wrapping protecting the spray, which was clear plastic with white flecks. The vibrant flowers bursting out from the inside of the neutral wrapping looked beautiful.

Cassia was more than thrilled with the result, and had no doubt that her client would be just as pleased. Hopefully, the lovely lady or gentleman recipient would like them too. It would be a shame if she had missed the mark with it.

[align=center]The bell above the door rang out again, and Cassia placed the bouquet carefully down on her work bench before going to inspect. She smiled at the sight - her lovely translator had arrived, looking remarkably disheveled, and the girl's eyes widened comically when she saw her employer already waiting.

"Cassia! It's so early, how can you be up and working already?" She exclaimed, pulling her beanie from her head. Cassia could only smile, brushing her hands off on her apron before signing a response.

When you love your job, it never feels too early.
