"I'm telling you, Midnight, it's going to be fabulous! I know you'll find something you love," Inspire said as they strolled into the shop together.

"Right," Midnight said with a nod. Though she knew this was supposed to be fun, she couldn't help but to feel a lot of pressure. All of her friends had come here to help her pick the perfect costume. What if she couldn't find the perfect one? What if she couldn't find any she liked? Oh boy.

Their other friends had already been at the shop for a while picking out costumes of their own. Of course, Inspire had gotten hers a long time ago already. She couldn't see anyone else when they walked in, but she was sure they would cross paths.

"Now where to start..." Inspire said, placing her index finger against her lip in thought.

"You made it!" the sound of Maggie's cheerful voice rang all throughout the store. She quickly bounced over and asked, "So, have you picked a costume yet? Do you know what you want to be?"

"Well, we just got here..." Midnight said sheepishly.

"Oh. Right! Well that's okay. Do you have any ideas? I think you'd look great in the sparkle fairy costume," Maggie said with a huge cheerful grin. She held up a bright pink sparkling dress with wings attached that she had pulled seemingly out of nowhere.

"Uh..." Midnight said, staring wide eyed at the costume. It was nice and all, but it certainly wasn't her style. She was too worried about hurting Maggie's feelings to suggest that she didn't like it.

Recognizing that look on her face, Whisper stepped took a step forward. Before now, they hadn't even realized she was standing there. "Um, Maggie," she said. "Why don't we let Midnight take a look around first?"

"Great idea! Take a look around and grab all the ones you like, then we can try them all on!"

Midnight gave Whisper a grateful look and said, "Thanks Maggie, that sounds like a great idea." Honestly, it did sound like a good plan to try everything on before deciding. What if one of them was really uncomfortable? Oh dear. More pressure.

"The classic costumes are over here," Inspire pointed. "Let's look at them first."

"Right," Midnight nodded. She was secretly glad that Inspire picked a direction out for them. She wouldn't have known where to start without her.

"Vampire? Too plain. Zombie? Too much makeup. Werewolf? Too hot. Frankenstein? Too ugly." Inspire flicked through the costumes, criticizing every one. Maybe classic costumes weren't the right place to start after all.

"What about a spooky skeleton?" Maggie said, holding it out for Midnight to see.

"This costume's anatomy is all wrong," Midnight explained. She started to point to some of the bones and explain what was wrong with them, but the others quickly tuned her out. "Okay, no skeleton," Maggie tossed the costume aside.

"My little brother is going to be a skeleton this year," Inspire said with a giggle. He was just too adorable in his little costume. The fact that the mask wouldn't stay straight just made it that much cuter. Not that she would make the mistake of calling him cute again.

"How about fantasy costumes?" Whisper suggested. They all nodded in agreement and wandered over into the fantasy section.

"I still think you'd look good as a sparkle fairy princess," Magenta said.

"What about this one?" Inspire asked, pointing to a costume of a popular fairy tale character. "You like this book, right?"

"I do!" Midnight said. This seemed far too easy, she thought while pulling the costume off the rack. The smile on her face quickly faded as she held it up next to herself. It was one of those especially revealing costumes, and it didn't even look like the book character at all. She stuck her tongue out and shook her head, and all of her friends laughed in response.

Suddenly, a sign across the store caught her attention. Historical costumes! That sounded perfect for her. Much better sparkling fairies and weirdly tiny costumes with the names of fairy tale characters. She started heading over there and Inspire looked very pleased at her initiative.

Coming around a corner at the end of an aisle, Midnight nearly bumped into someone. She reflexively apologized just before she realized it was her friend Prism.

"Hey Midnight," Prism said with a nod of acknowledgement. "How's the costume hunt going? Did you find anything awesome?"

"Not yet, we're still looking," Midnight admitted.

"Hey, you know what would be awesome? A ninja! I love ninjas!" Prism looked uncharacteristically excited about ninja costumes.

"I don't think Midnight wants to be a ninja," Cider inserted herself into the conversation.

"You don't know that! Ninjas are super cool, right Midnight?"

"Uh..." Midnight said nervously.

"You should be a pirate," Cider suggested. "Pirates are way cooler than ninjas, and they actually existed!"

"Ninjas totally existed!" Prism argued.

"Guys!" Midnight interjected. "I appreciate the suggestions, but I don't think those costumes are right for me."

"Oh right, sorry about that," Cider apologized. She felt a bit silly for being caught up like that. Prism's face was squished into a grumpy frown. It was obvious that she still felt strongly about her argument, but she wasn't about to push it right now.

"I like this one," Inspire walked toward them, holding an elegant looking dress.

"What kind of costume is that?" Cider asked, snorting back a laugh. Halloween was about scary costumes, not ridiculous ballroom dresses.

"It's very nice," Midnight started, "but it doesn't look very comfortable." She was beginning to feel quite bad for rejecting everyone's ideas. Maybe she should have come shopping on her own where she could pour over every costume in peace.

"What about a nice animal costume?" Whisper finally peeped up.

"Oh that's great!" Maggie exclaimed. "You could be an adorable bunny!"

"... but I was going to be a bunny," Whisper said softly to the floor. It didn't seem like anyone heard her.

"What about a scary animal, like a bear!" Prism jumped in.

"... a bear?" Inspire's tone was thick with disbelief.

"Wouldn't all that fur be kind of hot?" Midnight asked, but nobody was paying attention.

"A black cat! That's a classic and an animal!" Maggie suggested.

"I was a cat last year, you could borrow my ears," Whisper said, still staring at the floor.

"I could paint spots on your face, or even stripes! You could be a leopard or a tiger," Inspire offered.

"Guys!" Midnight practically shouted. Everyone froze their arguments and turned to look at her.

"Yes Midnight?" Cider finally asked, breaking the silence.

"I love that you are all trying to help me, but I would like to pick my own costume. I'll let you know when I find one I like, then you can all tell me what you think. How does that sound?"

"Of course darling!" Inspire placed her hand on her friend's shoulder. "I don't want to force you to get a costume you wouldn't like! Right girls?"

"Right!" everyone else responded in sync. They all looked embarrassed about going overboard with their suggestions. They were all just trying to help, really!

"We'll stay here while you have a look around," Inspire offered. "When you need our help, you can ask us for it."

"Thank you."

As she walked away from her friends in search of the perfect costume, Midnight couldn't help but to feel she was in over her head. She really didn't want to pick something that would disappoint her friends. Plus, it had to be awesome, attractive, comfortable, and not too expensive. It certainly felt like a really big deal.

Midnight found herself wandering around the store without anything really catching her attention. Nothing fit all of her criteria, even if it was interesting enough to warrant a second look. She was really starting to feel the pressure. Suddenly, a bit of bright yellow caught her attention in the clearance section.

A huge gleeful smile stretched across her face. This was the one! She darted over to the changing room and put it on. It fit! It fit! She bounced out of the fitting room and ran over to her friends.

"Guys! Look! I found the perfect one!" she cheered.

Midnight twirled around to let everyone see her new costume. "It's a bee, get it?" she said, proudly wiggling her stinger at them. Prism and Cider gave each other a look as they both tried to hold back a laugh, and Inspire looked like she was about to faint. Maggie tugged on the wings to see if they were sturdy, and Whisper stood back and nodded in genuine approval.

"Thanks guys! I'm so glad we came," Midnight beamed.

"Is anyone going to tell her about the hole in the butt?" Cider finally asked when she was out of earshot.
