FEBRUARY QUEST - SWEET TREATS

“Hmmm, what do you think, Luca?”

“I think that you are thinking too hard.” Muffy gave a little hum in response, spinning the small desert around on the pedestal. Opening her bakery to more… unique clientele, meant having to come up with more unique recipes. In tonight’s case, it was one mysterious Mr. Lestari, who couldn’t have gluten, or chocolate. She had promised him that the next time he visited, she would have more than just tea to serve him.

So it led her to her current endeavor. Little peanut butter cookies, totally gluten free and adorable. Okay - she had to admit, maybe she was taking the theme of the assignment a little too far. Was the bone shape pushing it? She thought it was the perfect icing on the cookie, so to speak. She turned one over in her paws, humming to herself as she did so. It felt like something was missing…

“Ah, I don’t know,” she groaned, leaning back so far in her stool she saw Luca step up to catch her. She chuckled, a quiet thing just like him, and shook her head. “It needs something - but what? Icing? A glaze? Should it be a different shape? Nah, the bone really sold it for me…” She spun around once, letting his foot catch her before it went around too many times to make her dizzy.

“Something simple,” he suggested, leaning over next to her to examine the treat. She nodded, sitting up a bit as she thought. It wasn’t her first attempt of the night, but she was so close, she hoped it would be the last. She gave it another spin around, eyes trailing over the details. Wait a minute - details! Simple, little things, how did she miss it before?

“Got it!” She squealed, hopping up the grab one of the unbaked cookies. She laid the tray out in front of herself, reaching across to grab a stray fork. She pressed the prongs into the middle of the cookie, and there it was. Perfection. The four little holes made the cookie resemble a classic doggie biscuit! She'd definitely hit the nail on the head with this one.

“Are we sure this isn’t too...” Luca paused. “Culturally insensitive?”

“Nahhhh,” Cassie added, popping in from the back room. “He was definitely making dog jokes when he was here last time. He’ll get a right kick out of it if you ask me.” Luca gave a shrug, admitting that Cassie definitely knew more than him.

“Alright, I’m putting this batch in the oven then!” Muffy purred, picking them up and moving to do just hat. She was definitely proud of her work, making sure that everything would come out right. She prided herself in having options for every type of person, and now hat had one more branch. Gluten free was tricky, and not something she often did, but she felt like she was getting the hang of it.

She could hardly wait for the rest of the afternoon to pass after that. She bounced from customer to customer with her usual vigor, but he rest could tell she was excited to see what Me, Lestari thought of her creations. Making something new for a client was always her favorite part of this job, and with her new crowd, she was having plenty of chances for innovation.

Afternoon rolled off, and the shop closed for its usual in-between hours. Cassie checked over all the wards, making sure they were all working as intended, and Muffy took care of rearranging the case for the night time crew. Different treats for different peeps, so she said. Eventually, their open sign flicked back on, well past midnight, and the quiet of their special hours took hold. She loved every little second of it.

It took a little while for the customer she really wanted to see to make his appearance, but sure enough, he showed. Right around his usual time of 3 am, the door gave a jingle, and in walked Mr. Lestari. He was his usual nervous self, giving a look over his shoulder between hellos.

“I’ve got something special for you tonight,” Muffy chirped, bouncing on her paws. “Just like I promised!”
