Oni finally opened his eyes, and fully took in where he was, and who was with him. Reive. Good. He didn't relax control of Amourana's heart yet, and wouldn't until she had finally accepted the new one. This specialist they were talking about must be really something. He could hear the conversation Brecht was having with a nurse out in the hall. Enhanced senses. It must have gone along with being ill. Ever since he woke up from that coma, he'd been able to hear, see, taste, and smell things that he couldn't before. Touch was also heightened, but not to such a great extent.
His soft pink eyes took in Reive. Someone who cared for him, wouldn't let him go, even though all the others had said he was a hopeless case. Someone with dedication enough to devote everything he was to Oni - so much so that he'd fallen into a quasi-coma HIMSELF. That was something that Oni couldn't... wouldn't allow to happen again.
Coming out of his trance, he yawned, and reached out to lay his hand on top of Reive's. He was back, and until Amourana had need of him again, he was going to stay awake and talkative. Rieve needed HIM now, as much as Oni needed the doctor. There was no mistaking that. He just wished that Reive would open up to him - tell him what was on his mind, instead of bottling it up inside. Or not thinking it at all. Perhaps his age was a factor. But he really doubted that. It must have been something else.

"Rieve? I'm awake..." he said quietly, as to not startle his friend. "I'm not entirely sure what just happened, but I think I did something good."

Even with two months of rest in a comatose state the Memorial kuhna was still worn out. Now that he had forced his body to switch rooms and come in here with Oni, his body was trying to get used to being used once again. While the Cake kuhna had slept Reive too fell into a light slumber. The expression upon his pale face was one of complete peace, happy and able to rest with ease now that he knew Oni was safe. Safe and in his arms....

"Rieve? I'm awake..."

He heard the younger one's call and his ocean blue eyes slowly slid open. Something good? He gave a soft smile and shifted his weight to sit up a bit better. "You had me worried there for a second..." his voice slid through the air.

"Sorry I wasn't awake.. Then we'd possibly know what happened." He just hadn't been able to keep himself awake. Holding Oni close to him under a blanket... So warm and cuddly. The doctor pushed these thoughts aside and continued on, "So are you feeling alright now?"

Brecht checked back in on his patient within a couple of hours. The heart was arriving a little late, and if Amourana had been keeping track of the time, she probably would be growing a bit anxious by now. His head poked into the room, and he managed a bit of a smile, whether or not she was actually awake. He slipped into the room from there, and picked up the chart, studying it for a moment to see any additional comments the nurses may have made.

Seems to be steadily improving in condition.
was one of the notes, and it was followed by
Showing increased cardiac output, no apparent cause. Still recommend transplant.

That was nothing new. He knew these things. But there was an entry he didn't remember making, that was not one of the nurses' handwriting.

Extra care is to be taken with pre-op preparation. Be gentle with this one.

That didn't sound like him, and it wasn't in any handwriting he remembered... Could it be one of the staff he'd never seen? Possibly, but it was doubtful. If there was one thing that steamed him, it was not knowing who looked at his patients. He'd have to find out who wrote that side-note, and discuss with them the importance of patient confidentiality. If a doctor that hadn't been him had been in with her, that was violating her privacy, and would NOT be tolerated. Unless... the new doctor? The cardiac specialist that was supposed to be coming by plane in a few hours? Could he have arrived early?

That turned out to be the case. The new doctor, who wore a tag reading "Rhyvest", turned the corner with a clipboard in hand, and a grin on his face.

"Find my notes, doc?" said the specialist, with a chuckle.

He was surprisingly young. Didn't even look like he'd been out of med school for more than a few months, if he even WAS out - but he'd been recommended highly by the staff, and had come with a high skill rating. He must be good, or he wouldn't be here. So far as he knew, Reive was not one to hire incompetent idiots.

"Yes, I found your notes..." Brecht replied, looking a bit wary. "Are you the doctor that's going to be doing the transplant?"

"Sure am! Amourana is going to be just fine in my hands. I'll have her right as rain within a few hours, and I know she'll be happier for it. Right now, though - I'd like to examine the patient, so if you please?"

Brecht nodded respectfully, and backed out of the room. Rhyv moved over to the bed where the girl was resting, and took some notes of his own on her heart-rate and blood-pressure, estimating what was about normal for her. Also, he took into account her respiration and other such factors. Then, he set pen and pad down to inspect her, watching her breathe, visually checking for pallor or cyanosis. Neither of which seemed to be too prevalent. Whatever she was on, drug-wise, was making it easier for her body to handle the failing heart inside her. NOW, he finally approached the bed, to the patient's right, to physically examine her. He smiled a bit at her sleeping form, unslinging his stethoscope from around his neck, and fitting the earpieces in, delicately moving aside the left corner of her hospital gown to listen to her heartbeat from there. It was about what he expected it to be. He changed tactics, using one hand to hold the stethoscope's chestpiece in place, and the other to lightly press two fingers against the radial pulse on her right wrist to track and time the murmurs. It was a fairly severe case. Frankly, he was more than a little surprised she wasn't dead. But she'd be fine once he got that new heart into her. He needed to wake her up, though, to get some active readings when she was actually conscious. Very gently, he shook her shoulder, moving a lose hair behind her ear.

"Amourana? I need you to wake up for me now..."

Amourana's eyes gently opened as she heard her name spoken, but surprisingly not by Brecht.  She eyes the new doctor curiously as she nimbly moved a finger to adjust the bed so she was sitting up.

"You must be the... specialist?"

This was asked gingerly, as if she, too, was shocked by the man's young age.  He couldn't be much older than herself, in all honesty, but that wasn't what worried her the most.  Her pink eyes scanned the room thoroughly, and then, after a minute, she turned her eyes back to Rhyv.

"Just out of... curiosity, I guess you could say.  Where is... Brecht?"

Maybe I'm foolish, maybe I'm blind
Thinking I can see through this to see what's behind
Got no way to prove it, so maybe I'm lying
Take a look in the mirror, what do you see
Can you see it clearer, or are you deceived in what you believe?
Don't ask my opinion, don't ask me to lie
Then beg for forgiveness for making you cry
'cause I'm no prophet or Messiah
You should go looking somewhere higher

I'm only human, I make mistakes
I'm only human, I do what I can
I'm only human, that's all it takes to put the blame on me

Don't put the blame on me

The Cake Kuhna gave a soft nod in answer to the question posed to him, and smiled up at the Memorial Kuhna happily. He was content just to be here. To be comfortable and safe. And he definitely felt safe here. It was as if all his worries melted away with every breath. And Reive was a large part of that feeling. He loved it when the doctor held him. Something not quite professional crossed his mind whenever he felt Reive's skin against his. Yes - he had to admit it. He was possibly in love. Albiet, he didn't know if the other felt the same, but it felt like love to him. The way his heart raced, and the way he shook all over internally. Yes. Butterflies in the stomach, so to speak. Oni was usually not one for being nervous. But this was a special case. A very special case. Right now, he didn't feel the need to say anything - just continued to lie there in Reive's arms, and enjoy being held.
After about two hours had passed [he'd gone back to sleep and woken again by that time], Oni was feeling much better, and even a little peckish. There wasn't much around to eat, so he figured he'd just wait for the hospital food to arrive... assuming it did.

There was a light tapping on the door to the room that Oni had been held up in. After a few moments, the male lucain slipped into the room, a large platter in his arms. His blue eyes fell upon the two of them, laying there in the bed together, and it was all he could do to keep from dropping it onto the floor. What was Reive doing?! He had heard that the Memorial kuhna had wanted this little guy to live really badly.... but this? Way to go Reive... do the one thing that doctors weren't supposed to do...

The kuhna looked over at Crail and let out a small laugh. "Come on now. Don't freak out. Does it look like we're doing anything? If you'd bump up the heat a bit he wouldn't be freezing in here."

"There are such things as blankets, y'know... Could have just gone and gotten him some more blankets to keep him warm." the young, pale nurse spoke as he set the platter down on a table that was next to the bed. "You're going to give me a heart attack, sir... and I doubt anyone here wants to try to take care of that."

Would he ever just hush? Reive knew that it was odd for him to be with Oni... But he felt strongly attached to this little guy. Age? They were truly animals, but had been able to attain a human form. In the animal kingdom, so long as you were old enough to mate age didn't matter. What would a few years be between them?

The specialist smiled at the girl he was to do surgery on, and he seated himself in a rolling chair that happened to be beside the bed.

"Brecht stepped out for a bit. I think this surgery is rather much for him. Actually, he looks very much akin to a ghost last I saw him - sheet white. Not sure why. He SOUNDED okay. Do you want me to go get him?"

So the girl was afraid. Rhyv could understand that. Afraid, and lonely for familiar faces. Not a problem with that. But finding Brecht when he had no idea where he went was going to be a challenge-in-a-half of a chore. Nonetheless, whatever the patient needed to feel comfortable, that's what he'd do. Regardless of difficulty or distance. While he waited for her answer, Rhyvest watched the monitors tracking her heart, and mentally took notes. About the same readings one would expect - which, while not 'good' per se, was much better than he'd been lead to believe. He had reason to believe that this young woman would more than make a fully recovery, if the surgery went well. And nothing he was seeing right now was indicating that the surgery would run into complications.

Meanwhile, Brecht had taken a bit of a break, and was out in front of the clinic with his back against the wall, smoking. He took a long drag of the cigarette that he'd lit a couple of moments before, and closed his eyes as he exhaled, the smoke swirling up into the cool night air, and dissapating. It was around ten-twenty PM, and he was about done with his shift. But since the other doctor hadn't shown, he was going to be working double-shift tonight, which meant five more hours of sadness and heartache.
Why had he become a doctor in the first place? Why couldn't he have gone into something nice and sensible, like a sculptor or an animator, like his mother had wanted him to be. Or even gone into sports like his father had suggested. He supposed that either profession would take him if he quit working here... but there was something about this job that just... made him feel like he was doing something worthwhile. In those other jobs - which he'd tried before med school - he hadn't felt like he found his niche. There was so much going on in his life back then, and nothing that he did with art, science, or sports ever seemed to calm his mind quite so much as when he was working on a case file, or examining a patient. The single-mindedness was a welcome, numbing relief from his own issues. An adopted child to support with no wife, two Stargoyles that had taken up residence in his attic, the escalating cost of his deadly habit, and his constant fear of commitment and relationship. Combined, and boiled down to the bare essentials of what was, it amounted to fear. Fear. Something he'd suffered from, even as a child. Fear of dogs. Fear of homework. Fear of girls. Fear of rainstorms. Some of those he'd grown out of - only to have replaced them with bigger and better [if it could be called better] angles of 'attack'. Fear of losing his job. Fear of killing someone. Fear of neglecting Adam - his son. Fear of getting killed or sued by a patient.... The list went on. Would he ever be able to decide on these things? Whether or not to fear? Whether or not to run? Was he even fit for this job, if he was afraid of a female patient's disappointment, sadness, or wrath? Maybe he just wasn't. Maybe this just wasn't what he was meant to do. It was all much too confusing to deal with right now. He took another drag of the cigarette, and tried very hard to forget what had driven him out here into the cold in the first place.

Amourana thought for a moment.  "Would it be... a wise choice for me to say that I did want you to try to find him?" She said.  She didn't want to inadvertently cause herself more problems with petty affections for the doctor that had been caring for her.  "I... I mean... I kinda feel a little attached to him, you know?  If it weren't for him, I'd have died before I could even get on the transplant list." She said.

Oni was feeling sleepy again. His heart-rate was up a couple more beats than it should have been. Possibly pain, which wasn't all that unusual for this shortly after surgery. Indeed, he seemed to confirm this as he started rubbing at his chest, eyes closed. He still looked pale, still looked sick. His breathing hitched a bit as he took it in, and his head quietly lolled to one side. The monitor sent out a few bleeps in warning that his heart-rate was too high for his condition to handle for long. After all, that was a new heart. IT needed time to rest and adjust to the new body, just as much as Oni needed the rest. Trying to exercise his powers so early in the recovery process, and keep them going, was taking its toll on his young body.

Crail had been helping take care of Oni since shortly after Reive's going into a coma, so he instantly saw what was coming on. He dashed over to a cabinet of different things he had prepared for the different things that might happen. Pulling out a needle, he headed over to where the two kuhnas were resting together. There was a quick, but gentle, prick as he slipped the needle and injected the medicine that was used to calm down his heart.

Crail's reaction had been so swift that Reive hadn't truly had the time to do anything. He hadn't been able to jump up since he'd have to move the other, so it was a good thing the lucain had been there. Now the the medicine had been injected all he could do was hold Oni and wait to see if it worked.
