Return to Jawan, the Sea City

S3: Azura and Soriana (Jawan)

((I think the slot number is wrong, but I'll fix it once all the slots are confirmed and such.))

The sea. The sun. The people. What was there not to love about Jawan? That was part of the billing for the area, anyway, and Damian was inclined to agree. He found himself at one of the seaside cafes, sipping whatever latte had been recommended by one of the waitresses and watching seabirds wheel round and round on the ocean breezes. His father was right; he really should get out more.

Upon the discovery of the little event in the park, he had taken his opportunity to do just that. He dressed himself in the most normal outfit he owned- which just happened to be a short tunic and a pair of slacks he had convinced his father to purchase- and headed in the direction of the best place to meet someone. Hopefully that someone would be a lady. Sure, there were still eggs to find, but why not make a date of it? If he could find someone to come along with him, he was certain to have a lot more fun with the thing.

She had been observing him for a few minutes now, as he partook of his coffee, delighted that something of her old life thrived here, at least in some form. He hadn't been the only one she'd been watching at the start, but the field narrowed quite rapidly, and soon she had come to decide that she would follow him for the rest of the day. The objective was to copy his actions and try and account for every possible detail, not only to blend in, but to learn how things were done in this world. She'd been playing the game for a while now, and it had improved her knowledge of Evelon more than she'd expected it to.

She lost track of time fairly quickly, however, and by the time she glanced back at the cafe, the young man was gone. But all was not yet lost, for the commotion at the park drew her attention, and she found herself wandering in its direction. She hadn't changed for the afternoon for she hadn't needed to; Evelonian garb was convenient that way. Beauty in simplicity. Good thing she wasn't claustrophobic, either, because at this point she had been swept up in a teeming mass of people at the park, twirling, spinning, jerking, in order to reorient herself. Once again, she was unfazed--she'd danced through worse.

The King beneath the mountains,
The King of carven stone,
The lord of silver fountains
Shall come into his own!

His crown shall be upholden,
His harp shall be restrung,
His halls shall echo golden
To songs of yore re-sung.

The streams shall run in gladness,
The lakes shall shine and burn,
All sorrow fail and sadness
At the Mountain-king's return!

Damian has scooped up his coffee to walk along the boardwalk, leaving a few keystones as tip for the kind waitress who had suggested this delightful drink. Though he had quickly sensed someone watching him, he had just as quickly ignored it. People were often watching him, he had learned, be it his father and the knights during training times or those who came to the court for some reason or another. He was just hoping the eyes on him this time belonged to a pretty lady or two.

He leaned against the rail, gaze following one of the small sailing ships that skimmed across the harbor. Maybe his father aught to buy some boats. Sailing seemed like a perfect idea right now, if he had a way to get on a boat.

In fact, she began to enjoy herself fairly quickly. She silently thanked whichever god these Evelonians prayed to for creating an art of dance so very similar to its earthly counterpart. It was every bit as easy to lose yourself in the rhythm. How ironic that the only comforting arms she'd felt since she'd come here belonged to perfect strangers.

Then she remembered she wasn't dancing. And everyone was staring.

She smoothed her skirts, doing her very best to feign obliviousness--something she'd had quite a lot of practice at. She parked her backside against the first broad surface she came to, which happened to be a rock at the edge of the park, near the sea. Hey, she wasn't going to do the asking. Where she came from, men had more guts than they knew what to do with, and that's the way she liked it.

(Sorry for the holdup; had to nurse Firefox back to health.)

The crowd around him seemed to shift, drawing his attentions away from ideas of sailing and ships. It was as if every eye had turned to stare at someone, the atmosphere a bit more tense than a moment before. The center of attention had done something that the general crowd disapproved of, that much was certain.

Damian's gaze shifted with the rest, landing on a young woman making a hasty exit from the crowd to seat herself on a nearby stone. She seemed, well, dopey, like one of his sisters trying to get out of the scolding she was receiving. He could only guess it was feigned after having witnessed such acts before. He leaned forward on the rail and shot her a small smile. His father had taught him to never be straightforward with a woman no matter how they may appear. If they could be coy, so could he.

It was then that she noticed him. The crowd was now drifting towards the main attraction, the egg hunt, effectively clearing the outskirts of the park and restoring a bit of serenity to the place. And the mood wasn't the only thing that'd changed, if merely slightly. There was the young man again, the one she'd planned on following. He was technically on the boardwalk, though closer to land than sea, and he'd spotted her. Bother. So much for a day spent learning. But you've had so many of those lately, she pointed out to herself. You'd do well to reserve some time for... other pursuits.

It was brief, perhaps infinitesimally so, and made more difficult by the limits of human vision. But she caught it. The first genuine, unpretentious gesture of goodwill she'd received the entire miserable time. A smile.

She smirked back, unsure where it fell on the scale of conceit to satisfaction--quite eagerly hoping it was the latter, to her surprise--and chuckled. She raised her eyebrows, running dainty fingers through silken hair--which someone long ago had admitted it reminded him of chocolate--and came to a decision. She was ever swift and resolute, as befitted one of her breeding.

Relinquishing her rocky respite for her own two feet, she rejoined the crowd, but not before making it painfully obvious to yon counterpart she wished him to follow suit.

He watched her a moment more as she danced away into the crowd, shaking his head with a smile. She was high-born, that much was certain, trained to act the courtly lady just as his dear sister. Where she could have learned something like that, he hadn't the foggiest. Perhaps he would ask her. At least, after he managed to catch up with her.

Her hint to follow had not gone unnoticed. The crowd, however, wasn't quite as complying. Where she could find room to dance, Damian could barely avoid being considered rude, trying his best to not shoulder anyone too hard. She could have just motioned instead of slipping back in with all these people.
