The house was beginning to smell wonderful.

Aromas of roasting meats, savory gravy, and sweet pumpkins pies were wafting through the halls of the orphanage. Several small children were already done playing 'chef' for the day, having retired to watch some of the brave adults in Jawan race away from the Turkezillas that had been released in the heart of the city, well away from their beach-side home. A few older children remained in the kitchen, determined to lick every spoon possible to get a full preview of dinner it seemed.

"I stirred the grazy, Aunt Hamuel!" Lyra said happily, dripping spoon in one hand and her candy-striped blanket clutched firmly in the other. Marshall wasn't quite so 'helpful'--the young boy had taken it upon himself to 'test' some of the finished products.

"Marshall, that's enough deviled eggs for you! The rest of the family will want some too." Aressian said as he ushered Lyra away from the stove to get at the oven for the turkey. "Besides, you know Brujah loves Hamuel's deviled eggs. We need to make sure there's enough for him. He's had a busy day."

Marshall whined and placed his half-eaten egg back into the holding tray, causing Lyra to make a disgusted face. "...He can have mine, Aressian..."

Without waiting for a second opinion, Marshall grinned and popped the rest of the egg into his mouth.
"I have been hidden, scorned, adored, worshiped, forsaken, coveted and banished more times than I care to count. But the one thing all those experiences cannot steal from me is the gentle soul I was born with, the kind heart I have molded, and the bright ideals for the future that have lit my way through the darkness of the past."

"Oh, you are doing so wonderfully Lyra. Come here sweetheart, let Aressian check on the turkey." She softly ushered the girl closer to Marshall while getting the gravy into a boat for the table. The dripping spoon was also gently taken and put into the sink before she wiped her tiny hands.

Turning to Mashall she couldn't suppress a gentle laugh at his half-eaten egg. "Okay, after that one you're done until dinner. I saw you sneaking some of that cheese as well, don't ruin your appetite. We all want to eat together when Brujah gets home." She gently scooped up the younger boy, wiping his face of egg crumbles. "How about I put on some cartoons, and in one episode we'll be ready for dinner." She offered while leading the two to the living room.

It was indeed about twenty minutes later that the large man walked through the doorway with the smaller kids glued to his hips, laughing softly while he ushered them inside. "Come now, I promise I'm not going to fall over." He did look a little worse for the wear however, a large scratch streaking down his left arm, obviously already healing itself back together. There were scuffs and bruises, even some very large Turkzilla tracks down his shirt and pants, but it was nothing the man couldn't handle. The shirt may be done for though, Hamuel's hands could only hear so many rips and tears before it was unwearable.

"Hey handsome." He peered into the kitchen with a wide grin, waiting for Aressian to shut the oven before enveloping him into a distinctly Brujah bear-hug. "I made enough money for us to keep going for another year." He whispered into his ear, slipping the check into his boyfriend's pocket.

The two children beamed at Hamuel as she bustled them around the kitchen and eventually landed on the option of cartoons. Not that the house didn't frequently have cartoons playing, but the television was never just left on for noise. Marshall giggled as his face was wiped clear of his snacking evidence, giving it a last wipe with the back of his hand just for good measures.

"Yeah, cartoons!" he giggled. Lyra came up beside Hamuel and took her hand with a smile before following into the living room to a cheer of children as Marshall loudly announced the plans before Hamuel even had the chance.

Aressian stayed busy in the kitchen while the lady of the house entertained the troops with animated animals, she did so much there was no reason he couldn't keep the last of the dinner items going while she took a small break. Turkey basted again and back in the oven, Aressian heard a familiar voice purr from across the room. He turned and smiled, quickly cleaning off his hands on his waist apron before wrapping his arms as far as he could manage around Brujah. The news he whispered was beyond wonderful, and Ares gripped his tattered shirt and held him more firmly.

"One of these days you're not going to have to risk so much to keep us going year to year," he promised softly, pulling away just slightly to see his dirty and scuffed face. "There's time to go get washed up before dinner's ready, do you need some help tending to any wounds?" The question was a more coyly stated sentiment that was matched with a slightly raised eyebrow and a playful grin.

Hamuel was more than happy for the slight distraction. She had faith Aressian could finish dressing the turkey, the last piece of their dinner. Settling herself into the couch she gathered children in each arm before turning them on with a soft chuckle. This was where she felt most at peace. A warm home, surrounded by little ones and so much love. Even if they were never with them forever it meant they could care for even more, bring happiness into the lives of ones who had lost too much far too soon in their lives.

"One of these days you'll understand I risk so little to keep us happy." He grinned, leaning in for another soft kiss. He wasn't indestructible, but he was fast healing and hardly felt the pain. Not to mention there was little he wouldn't risk to see his family happy.

"I think I'd love that." Returning the playful grin he took Ares' hand and slipped out of the kitchen with him, glad for Hamuel's distractions. They could have a bit of alone time, and he could calm Ares' fretful heart about his wounds. "I certainly need new clothes now, I think not even Hamuel's skilled hands can fix these."
