But They Don't Listen (Self / Quest)

It seemed like her life had been the same thing for so many years. Sitting in waiting rooms, waiting for the nurse to come in, then wait for the doctor to come in later to just say it's all in her head. Ever since she was a child, this was the norm. No doctor wanted to really listen to her, despite her pleas for an answer, and actually being heard always fell on deaf ears. Again, she found herself in one of those rooms, eyes roaming at the various medical instruments. So many times she felt like just leaving, knowing that the answer would always be the same.

Your results are normal.

Those four words echoed in her head, just another test to show that anything that was on a blood test was normal. That's the only reason doctors need to shoo her out of the room and tell her nothing is wrong. Typical. Nothing was ever wrong in their eyes. So long as nothing visible showed up on the various tests they put her through, then she was useless to them. Nothing seems wrong with you, she would hear. Over and over again. Why don't they ever listen to her? Does she have to be dying just for them to notice her?

She could recall waking up in a white room, IV sending a saline drip through her veins. She had fainted again, this time, her head was aching. She must have hit it when she fell. Her eyes felt blurred as she tried to make out her surroundings, only hearing the beeps of the medical equipment nearby. Faint voices were heard in the other rooms as she tried to make sense out of what caused her to lose consciousness. Even then, the doctors were slow to take care of her. Probably because other people had it so much worse. It was always like that. If you had something visibly wrong with you, you always got help first. Here she was, still delirious on what happened. Her eyes closed once more as she lost consciousness.

That was only the beginning of her ER visits. She had landed herself there many times after, either by syncope, or unbelievable pain where they had to pump five doses of morphine into her just to calm the agony. It was only then that they paid her any mind, and even then, they were still so slow about it. She only guessed it was due to ordering the pain meds in. Still, she didn't have much faith in the medical professionals. Too many times she was burned by them, why should she care anymore?

Even when meeting with a specialist, she still got the same drivel. A neurologist, one that specialized in MS as she recalled. She felt hopeful that this woman could give her an answer, any answer. But, that wasn't meant to be. It felt like just because she didn't have MS, that she was just blown off and sent away to have more blood taken from her. How many vials of blood has she given to those damn phlebotomists? It was always going to have the same result! Your results are normal. Every time. Every time she did a test, it didn't matter if it was an X-Ray, and MRI, or even a CT Scan. They were all normal. Then... then she was just told it was all in her head. How dare they tell her that! Didn't they see that she hated living like this!?

Every time she thought back to her previous meetings with doctors, she felt like just leaving. She was kidding herself if she thought this doctor would be any different then the rest. This new doctor would just write her off because she didn't have cancer or something. Hell, she wished she had cancer, or MS, or whatever, just so she had an answer, something well known that people would get right away! If she had one of those, then people would listen.

Who was she kidding...

The amount of medication she was put on and taken off of was another story. Yes, she knew for a fact she had some mental issues like depression and anxiety. Her psychiatrist listened to her at least, then again, that is what they are paid to do. Still, they did listen to her, that was a plus. She counted herself lucky on finding one right away that listened to her and didn't bullshit and shove more pills on her. But other doctors? A pill apparently made everything better! Whatever. She was so close to giving up on them anyway.

A knock on the door alerted her to the nurses arrival. Yep, she was used to the motions. Tell her what the purpose of her visit was, name the same old crap in some slight hope that they will listen, and get her vitals checked. Nurses were even a gamble, some had lots of personality and were willing to talk, while others acted like you were inconveniencing them. Heck, most of the people in phlebotomy were like that too, except more often than not, they had no personality either.

When the nurse left, she let her mind drift off like some weird coping mechanism.

She had considered so many times on going down the natural path. Mainstream medicine wasn't helping her any, so why not go to the alternative? Apparently, many people had more success with naturopaths than mainstream doctors. Sure, they could only perform minor surgeries when needed, and if she needed major surgery again, then she would have the brave the hospital once more. She didn't harbor any ill feelings towards surgeons. Yet. They were just doing their job, and felt like they avoided as much contact as possible with their patients, save for being in the OR.

Natural remedies however, she would need to look into more. Maybe her answer lies there. Maybe.

"Ms. April?" she heard as the doctor entered. April gave her a half-assed greeting, letting the doctor know right away that her spirits were already low.

They had gone through the normal motions of a doctor's visit, April flatly telling the woman what she had gone through, and that she was at the end of her rope on doctors in general. The other woman seemed to take what she said to heart, talking to her as if she were a person and not just another paycheck. The more they talked, the more the doctor listened. April was already on the verge of tears by the end of her visit when she heard the words she had been wanting to hear for so long.

"I have an idea on what is wrong, and I will do everything I can do make sure you have an answer. You are not crazy, you are just in pain."

With that she broke down into tears, she couldn't believe she was hearing those words. Her doctor smiled, but she knew she was sincere.

Ever since then, she had kept in close contact with her new doctor. A rare diamond in a sea of rubble.
