Though the Portal & Down the Rabbit Hole [P]

Postby Nyxia » 11/22/2014 10:10 AM

Still somewhat dazed by the events that had lead up to this, like being in a fog as he sat down at one of the tables. Since the day before it seemed like everything was a bit of a blur, from finding his way to the portal all the way up to this morning's breakfast. His first few classes had been daunting to Ialu, who for the most part was still getting use to have a werewolf sit beside him in one desk and a fae in the other. So far he'd survived an Alchemy class, and managed not to fall asleep in his History of Magic class.

Now at his third class of the day Ialu took a deep breath and pulled out his sketch book, he would have time later to think it all over. For now he unpacked his pencils as Ms. Amedë floated into the room, with a wide smile on her lips. A glance around the room told him that once more he had no idea who any of his peers were, and from the way this day had already gone it didn't seem they wanted to change that either. That was the price of being a fairly regular very human in a school full of monsters and magic users, he wasn't anything special.

Bottles smashed, I raised my hand
How can you all even stand?
And why is there joy in this poison? Oh
Faking smiles and confidence
Driving miles to capture this excitement
I can't take anymore

You're never gonna get it
I'm a hazard to myself
I'll break it to you easy
This is hell, this is hell
You're looking and whispering
You think I'm someone else
This is hell, yes
I am in hell

What had she gotten herself into? Nellie commonly came up with crazy ideas, though this was something... this was on a different level. She didn't even know there were half this many non-human races in existence. In fact, she had only bumped into one other Immortal in the hallway; she had seen him a couple times at some of the bigger parties her family had thrown. Must still be lower in the social hierarchy, she noted as she absentmindedly doodled on the desk at which she sat, trying unsuccessfully to recall the boy's name.

"Class is now over! Please don't be late for you next class, everyone!"

Nellie hardly paid attention that entire period. (Mortal Technology... was it?) How could she with this much stimulation? Never did she know that something as simple as school could be so daunting. The white haired girl picked up her bags before she exited the classroom, trying to dodge and squeeze through the peculiar assortment of students which now flooded the halls. Nellie clumsily read out the room number for her next class from the paper which listed her schedule as she walked. Not the brightest idea, but it seemed she arrived in one piece anyhow.

Art. It was a nice change of pace from her earlier Spell Crafting class, which she had been convinced to take by Mara. She took pleasure in the comforting smell of paints and clay that was lingering in the air outside the room. Nellie took one hesitant step into the classroom before quickly scanning the room for an open seat. Seemed she still had quite a selection to choose from. She had arrived three minutes before the late bell, anyway.

Forcing herself out of her comfort zone, Nellie chose a seat next to certain white haired individual. He didn't seem too... strange, for lack of a better word. "H-hi. I mean hello. Yeah." Oh boy, did her social skills require some improvement.

She quickly pulled her bag onto her lap and began scouring through it, searching for her sketchbook. It could've been because she actually needed that for class, but it was, most likely, more to mask the look of embarrassment plastered across her face.

A beautiful moon shines above again tonight,
And it sheds light happily over the world.
As for me, I'm just worthless, good for nothing,
Dreaming at daybreak, creeping at dawn.

Still I'll scream into the sky, hoping that somebody will find me.
I want to run, but there's no way out--
No bright future in sight.
But I still fly up like a butterfly, hoping that you'll find me.
A crescent moon, ugly children of the stars, flying with broken wings...!

As the rest of the students who had selected art for a class filed in, several of which gave him either a sideways glance or a sneer openly at him, pretty much all of them had sat at other tables. It didn't seem to bother Ialu much as he set up the pencils he wanted and flipped his sketch book to a clean page. His last school he'd been avoided because they all thought he was crazy, in this school he was just a second class citizen. One more class after this and he would meet up with Keit for their self study period, he could survive that much longer he hoped.

Ms. Amedë clapped her hands and pointed as the final bodies straggled in, looking to be second year students if he was reading it right. That was when a body sat down beside him, nearly startling Ialu out of his chair.
At first he'd hope it was one of the friends Keit had introduced him to the night before, but one nervous glance told him he hadn't met her before. "Uh, well...hi. I, uh, well, you a, are going to sit here?" Smooth was clearly not on one of Ialu's skills as he tripped over his words, even forgot what he'd meant to say. If she didn't think he was stupid, she would probably soon reason he was just a plain human and jump to move.

Just as Ialu remembered what he'd wanted to say to the girl beside him, their fae teacher gave another clap of her hands drawing the attention of the class to her. "Good morning, class. I am Ms. Amedë. Now many of your faces I don't recognize, I assume that means you are either first years or completely new to art." It was strange to Ialu how she moved across the front of the room by her desk, fluid motion that made him wonder if she wasn't a ghost of some kind. "What I would like to do, is have you do a free draw that will give me an idea of where you all are as artists." She gave a sweet enough smile, that he could only assume hid some kind to sharp teeth behind it. "You may get to know your neighbors, and help one another." With that she gave them a dismissive wave, telling them to go about their work, before settling herself like a hawk behind her desk.

"O-oh, is it oka--"

Much to Nellie's dismay, she was promptly cut off by the art teacher. Her head was out of her bag, her hands blindly fiddling with the books inside instead. The teacher seemed a bit odd to the white haired girl, but she wasn't in any good position to judge the woman. Nellie had been homeschooled her entire life, so it was certain that a teacher whose purpose was to keep watch over an entire class would have adopted different mannerisms that one who only had to instruct one or two (maybe three, on a good day) students at a time.

Throughout Ms. Amedë's introductions, as is how she introduced herself, Nellie nodded periodically. She had finally managed to pull her sketchbook out of her bag with her unsteady hands onto the table. By the time the teacher had finished speaking, a set of pencils had found their place proper on the desk as well.

Taking a single deep breath, Nellie glanced timidly at her partner. "Um... Is it okay to sit here? I-I mean I can move if you want! If you're waiting for someone or something!" Nellie wanted to smack herself.

This teacher was slightly unsettling for Ialu, though it seemed few if any of the other students. She looked at him like he was an animal in a zoo, mildly surprised and curious. With a shiver he gave a glance at the table next to them, so he wouldn't be looking at their teacher but so it didn't seem like he was looking at the girl next to him either. She was pretty, he noticed, as he watched how the others in the room who were beginning their work. "No...no one else was planning to sit here." He hated to sound so, well depressing when he said it. For a moment he had thought of enjoying the company, she seemed so nice. Then again so had Nina and Esti, before they'd found out that he was just a human.

"You do realize I'm a plain human, right?" His voice wasn't bitter, nor was it defensive when he spoke to her again. A couple of years ago he might have just snarled and told her to get away from him, now though he was resigned to the fact that those words would probably send her off faster than any attitude of his would. He gave a soft sigh and pulled out one of his darker charcoal pencils, even if she did want to get away from him he still couldn't find anyone better to draw. Around them several of the students used their magic to move their pencils, a couple of skilled mages simply moved their fingers along the page they were working on; and one, what Ialu suspected was a werecat of some kind, used a claw dipped in ink to draw with.

With quick strokes of his pencil Ialu managed a rough outline of her face, shoulders, and hair; though he didn't seem to look up at her as he worked. "I'm Ialu, by the way. It's nice to at least meet you." His voice was soft and friendly, even if he didn't expect to have it returned. He hoped Keit was right, that if he was nice some of the others in the school might be friends with him.

In response to his words, Nellie sighed with relief and gave a small nod. It would be embarrassing for her to change to a new seat after class already started; she didn't want to cause a scene. So, she was pleased that she could circumvent that whole displeasing scenario. Nellie stared at her paper for several moments, before fishing her pencil bag out of her backpack once more and pulling out a dark green pen. A simple sketch should be good enough for the first assignment, right? Her sketches always turned out better in pen, when she knew she couldn't erase anything.

She would draw her sister's servant, Hal, she concluded. Just as she was outlining the older man's chin, the man next to her opened his mouth to speak. Nellie put down her pen before smiling gently at him. "And I'm an Immortal." Races didn't matter here. Sure, it was peculiar for a human to be attending a school built for non-humans, it wasn't something she particularly felt like questioning. With a small huff of air, she picked up her pen and made quick work of Hal's head and hair. Nellie kept her gaze focused solely on her artwork and made a conscious effort to drown out anything else, save for any words her partner may speak.

"My name's Nellie Dauwitz," she replied to the man, finishing the last pen stroke on Hal's eye before looking up at him once more. "I-it's a pleasure to meet you as well. And er... Tha--" People hadn't paid her much mind all morning; Ialu was the first student with which she had been able to hold a conversation with. She wanted to thank him, but... "Mm, never mind. I-is that a drawing of me, though?"

It was not the reaction Ialu had expected when he'd told her what he was, considering how others had reacted to him. "An Immortal, wow." He shouldn't have been impressed by it, but he was still new to what all existed outside the human race itself. The fact that she didn't seem to think him a dog was also nice, and made Ialu smile back at her with his normal kindness. While she worked, so did he. Taking care with the details of her face in the expression she wore while drawing, he then switched out to some of his finer pencils. Adding the shading for the smaller items such as the shadows from her hair on her face, and light of her eyes. It was turning out to his liking, though he was having a bit of trouble with ruffles of her shirt.

He wasn't as much looking at the drawing on his sketch pad as he watch at her, since he already knew where the main outline was. "I'm guessing your new here too, Nellie?" That was the way he noticed her looking at what he was working on, "Oh, yeah. I'm sorry, I should have asked - I..." Once again he had floundered straight out of things to say. Turning his face away so she wouldn't see his flushed face, Ialu mumbled a few more apologies to her. Mentally he kicked himself that he hadn't thought of such a thing, or how it might make her feel. Most people didn't see him drawing them, or care.

He was in the middle of feeling stupid enough to start another drawing so she wouldn't feel uncomfortable, when their teacher stood up. A couple of the girls who'd sat at the table across from them were too busy giggling and snickering at him to notice that Ms. Amedë had raised her hands for silence in the room. She quiet promptly remedied that by stepping into the center of the tables. "Now, class. If you wouldn't mind handing me your drawings." She was far to elegant as she held out a willowy hand for them to begin handing her papers. "I would like to have each of you think hard on an appropriate artistic interpretation of the words I've written down." Behind her appeared several words on the wall where a white board could have hung, but didn't, in a soft sky blue.

((Feel free to make something up for words...I sorta lost my thought on that one.))

"Mm, yeah. This is my first day."

It was comforting to know that Ialu was new around here too. (Rather... wouldn't it have been better to meet an older student who could show her the ropes? Oh well.) Misery loves company, Nellie mused, repeating the words that she had heard from the lips of adults in her head. She didn't bother to mention that this was actually her first day ever attending a traditional school.

Nellie laughed lightly in surprise at Ialu's shock. She shifted in her seat a little to get a better view of the paper sitting on the boy's desk. "You're talented. It's alright, as long as you promise you'll make me look nice on paper," she replied in a sing-song tone of voice before returning to her work, and the silence that accompanied it.

She only had enough time to finish Hal's torso before the teacher called time on their art. With great reluctance, Nellie stood to hand her unfinished piece to the teacher. It was such a shame; she liked the way it was turning out... Maybe if they got the piece back before the holidays, she could finish the piece and give it to Hal as a present. Her attention, however, quickly shifted from her sketch to the words now sprawled across the wall in blue. "Huh... What do you think, Ialu?" she asked the white haired man absentmindedly as she returned to her seat. She was interested in how he'd interpret it.

Fireworks. Coin. Gamble. Umbrella. Exam.

"Do we... have to use all the words?" It was a bit shameful, but she only whispered this to Ialu, too shy to call the teacher's attention starting from the first day.

When she laughed Ialu relaxed, which was the reason he let her see the drawing. He'd used the light to add in a background of a tree to give the drawing a more natural feeling to it, before regarding her with a smile. "I wouldn't dream of drawing anything that was ugly." He chuckled, it was nice to have someone he could tease with after so much. He might have said more if he hadn't been so focused on capturing so much detail in a short time, but he could say it was one of his better drawings. Handing it over to their teacher Ialu didn't look up at the wall, instead he flipped his notebook for a clean paper and settled back into his seat.

He was actually enjoying the class a bit when Nellie asked the question, which caused him a moment of confusion. Pushing back his white bangs from his face Ialu studied the words, and more importantly the fact that they were on a wall. It was enough to cause one of his eyebrows to quirk for a moment, before he remembered Keit telling him about the teach that constantly blew up his room during classes. Putting aside the thoughts on this strange way of handling rooms, he read the words. "I don't think so, since class should end soon." He wasn't entirely sure on that, after all their teacher might be able to stop time for all he knew. "I think we take one." He gave an unsure shrug of his shoulders to let her know that he was fairly clueless to it.

With a touch of an idea, Ialu began rapidly sketching out lights and some dice. Gamble, he couldn't say why that had given him an inspiration.
