Keira strode across the width of the grass from the forest to the water as the winter sun brought no warmth to her already cold heart. She sat at the edge of the freezing water and whipped her tails furiously. Alone . . . she scoffed at herself. Alone, she repeated, more melancholy. in the most beautiful place in Evelon. Now, of course she couldn't see it, as she was blind, but she had heard stories and descriptions, even seen pictures before she was blinded. Keira felt a tear slip down her cheek and gently hit the ice below. It was like hearing a pin drop at a church. Alone . . .
