An End To Sorrow [Self][E][Quest]

It had been a long time since she had come to these caverns to seek out their mysteries and literally 'lose' herself in their depths. To find a token to free her from certain situations...situations that had given rise to him. Indeed the little sponge of a lifeforce was still beside her even if his outline seemed faded and somewhere along the way he had lost his muchness. But here he was still, and today that is why they were coming back to the place that, in a way, it had all began.

The Bleeder trudged along beside her with a bitter demeanor, glancing to and fro to try and assess their reason for being here. Malu did well to keep her thoughts to herself--instead staying focused on the terrible past that had brought him into existence rather than the happy news she held in her heart.
"I have been hidden, scorned, adored, worshiped, forsaken, coveted and banished more times than I care to count. But the one thing all those experiences cannot steal from me is the gentle soul I was born with, the kind heart I have molded, and the bright ideals for the future that have lit my way through the darkness of the past."

"Why are we here again, woman? Your lady doesn't want one of these beasts any longer," the Bleeder grumbled, kicking a small stone further down the path to listen to the echo it created. Malu sighed, her feathery crown falling. She forced herself to remember all of the fears and insecurities that had been her typical mantra in years past.

Matrix took notice, seeming revived by the flood of memories, and turned to smile chidingly at her. "Oh, have we finally come to realize you can't escape your fate? Gambit may have left you for now, but he will come back. You have made yourself quite a prize--stealing away with a separate species no less. He'll take pleasure in ripping him apart and taking you back by force. You're long overdue to bear his eggs."

She remained silent even as his ribbing became harsher and more real to her. Gambit wouldn't stop until he'd been bested, she knew that much. But it had been years and without so much as the scent of him in all that time she doubted he cared to find his timid little black cloud any longer. He and Nakira surely had their claws full with clutches of unruly children by now anyway. But she could still feel the real fear being inserted into her bloodstream again.

"The same one you aligned yourself with can hardly defend you either, you know," Matrix said with a wide grin on his broken heart face. "He's lucky he hasn't died in the war yet. Truly, you think your safe with him? He's run off to the army again without you--he loves to cheat death more than he loves you!"

Malu clamped her eyes closed, fighting to remember who was in control in this situation. It was her--she was in control and she would end this thing. Only a little while longer...she had to reach an appropriate spot.

"Why, he's probably run back to his beloved army right as we speak. Surely he's found some much more fit little tart to sink his claws into--warriors like that never stay loyal. He'll be looking for sturdy blood to mingle his own with...and you are hardly sturdy. Weak. Cowardly. Your luck with his protection has surely start to run thin by now."

Malu was almost running down the cavern corridor now, tears welling in her eyes as she tried her best to walk the line between a blubbering mess and the one about to deal the punches. Matrix was beside her--almost glowing with strength as he chased her spitting out harsh words in a reality he was creating just for her. A horrid reality where Argus was no better than Gambit. Malu tried to block out all the ideas the Bleeder tried to force into her mind to no avail. Some would stay rather she wanted them to or not...but she was going to win in the end. Nearly there now, lead him just a little deeper down to meet a proper grave.

"Just think of it--an old, gentle soul and all those lady warriors in need of company at night. How's any sound male to resist? He knows he can have you...there's no challenge in that. You wait for him like a lost pup, looking for any scrap of affection you can find. How sick of you he must be. Is that why you've come back? To remember just how worthless you must be to him?"

The Serraptor skidded to a halt, digging her talons into the rocky soil beneath her feet. This would do, if he continued to berate her she'd lose her drive. He was right, maybe she was a little worthless. Maybe Argos would grow tired of her. But for now she knew what they had...and she knew what would make that stronger.

She turned to the brightly glowing Bleeder with a new fire in her eyes that made him shrink back. "Enough of your venom, Matrix. It's my turn now."

The Bleeder was taken aback to say the least--never had his creator turned on him with such resolve. In a way it excited him to think that she may finally try and fight back, but this was no such time. There was something brewing in her mind that he couldn't quite see yet and it frightened him. He could sense now that this was all planned; he had been led here on purpose. But for what purpose he had yet to be sure.

"You have been with me through all the misery in my life, Matrix. You were born when Lono died and your very first words were those telling me how weak I was and how privileged I should feel to accept Gambit as a mate at his bidding. You made me believe I was worthless until someone placed a worth on me, and for a long time I thought it was true--that I was only an egg-bearing weakling not long for this world."

She watched as his colors slowly began to dim; the power he held over her beginning to wane.

"You called me many things as I tried to find an escape, any kind of live greater than what you tried and almost succeeded in convincing me I deserved. But there will be no more of that. There will be no more sorrow, no more letting you drag Lono and Gambit around when my memory is ready to have them tucked away."

His colors sputtered further, and Matrix took a small leap forward to try and reassert himself as the one truly in charge. "I tell you the things you are too weak to tell yourself. If you'd been listening to me all these years you may have amounted to something by now!" he snarled, bristling as he realized he was once again weakening. The veil to her mind was getting thinner, but he still couldn't read clearly what she was thinking. Not yet.

Malu narrowed her tear-rimmed eyes. At the same time this was all so freeing, it was truly the end to a large part of her life. She'd be lying to say she didn't fear for her future, but she'd be better off finishing things. "You fed me lies meant to keep me quiet and fearful. You only thought of yourself and in so many ways have never been any more a friend to me than Gambit. You've proven this every time you've tried to push Argus away from me."

Matrix growled, narrowing his eyes to her. "I've kept you from further hurt and..."

"And nothing!" Malu cried, stomping a foot towards the fading Bleeder. "You have tried to keep my mind in a fearful coma so that you may more easily feed off me. There will be more more for you, ever. Things have changed...and I no longer fear my past. It holds no more power over me."

Matrix's eyes went wide as he watched Mlu's clawed hand wander down to her abdomen to gently cradle it. The veil was gone, he could see everything. The nights she and Argus had been stealing away, the home den they had slowly been building, the whispered promises in the darkness. A part of him felt proud...she had become so crafty she'd hidden it all from him. But this pride was short lived--the Bleeder was soon see-through as if he were merely a ghost.

"I carry Argus' child, I know he would never abandon me for some female stronger than I am. What we have built despite you is real and it is everything I could have ever hoped to have in my life. Now I only need to let go of my past...and you, Matrix."

The Bleeder collapsed soundlessly to the floor, digging useless claws against the ground to try and pull himself closer to Malu without success. He sputtered and gasped as life and existence as a whole fled from his being like a Cheshire cat might evaporate into thin air. He unraveled from existence from the tip of his tail and worked its way forward slowly in spite of his clinging.

"You've bred an abomination!" he managed to squeak out before the universe reclaimed his form and his head was plucked from reality as well. Malu stood, for the first time in years, truly alone within the cavern.

The stones where the Bleeder had met his end were lightly charred black in the image of the little beast. Malu shivered a bit as she looked at it--like watching a living shadow reach out to try and grab her. Stepping around it carefully she trudged back to the mouth of the caverns with a lightened spirit. He was gone--after all this time she had finally found the strength to banish him back to where he had come from. She touched her abdomen gently, just barely able to feel the forming egg inside. She had done it--she had been brave for not only herself but for her new family. Argus would be so surprised to see her return alone...even though she wasn't truly. That would be the greater surprise.

As she stepped back into the light of day everything seemed so much brighter. The shadows lacked their menace and the creaks and cracks of the trees had no more mystery behind them. There was nothing to fear now--he was gone for good. She need only look forward to a good life now...with Argus and their unborn baby.
