Return to Baian Swamp

Swamp Monster [Self]

Postby SkyWolf11 » 05/13/2012 2:03 PM

[ Don't mind me, just going ahead and reusing this ugly thread from months past for more uncreative titles and stuffs, falalalalalaaaaa  :U;  *shot* ]

The ever mucky land and misty cover of the Baian Swamp deterred most from ever daring to explore such a strange and foreboding place.  The sheer density of the plant growth deeper within often made it impossible for those that dared to try.  It was certainly a place of myths and rumors, shrouded in mysteries that were fueled by the ever paranoid whispers of tall tellers.  There were tales of beasts, monsters, HUGE terrible things in this place that would rather gobble you up than look at you.  These creatures that were thought to thrive here in the secrecy of an untouched land were never thought of as good or normal things.  Of course not.  Why would anything good or normal live in such a horrid place?  It was not a place of good.

And it was certainly not any place for a child.  Nor one so small as this child that found herself past the point of safety of the swamp's border.  She was not wearing the best attire for a swamp either, with little more a ragged looking faded purple dress and a small shoulder throw.  She was not even wearing shoes...  Though one could not tell at first look, there were socks covering her feet, but by now she had mud reaching all the way up to her knee caps, even some splashed upon the bottom of her dress.

It was a slow walk through the mud and the cold nip of the wet land sucked the heat from her tiny body.  Her nose was red from the air and from her crying.  In her hands, she grasped tightly a small doll.  It was dirty as well (though how clean could you expect to stay in this place); it's porcelain face cracked on the cheek and stained from the muck, it's dress just as ragged as the girls, and it was missing an arm.  The girl stopped as she came upon a protruding root of a large twisted tree and with the little strength she could muster, hauled herself up out of the sticky mud.  Slowly she looked around then curled herself up into a ball and began to cry softly into her doll.

It was most unfortunate, most unfortunate indeed, that the child had even been allowed to get near the swamp.  And to have traveled so far within it?  Oh dear...  No child could survive in this place.  Not alone.  Dangerous things happened, especially in the cover of night, which was upon the land, and coming fast.  Without much light reaching the already dark place, when the sun fell, it became impossible for most to see past their own nose.  But even then... things still had a way of finding you in the dark...

The young girl, who had decided to stay planted upon her root above the forest floor, had scurried to make a small bed out of vines and leaves that littered the strange trees of this place.  It would have to do.  Still sniffling with dried tears staining her rosy cheeks, she snuggled her doll under her leafy blanket and tried to let the sleepiness take her mind away for the night.  However, even in such a secluded place far away from any kind of civilization that she was used to, she was not as alone as she felt...

From a distance, there appeared a set of eyes.  A pair of piercing, glowing eyes that were keen on it's target.  For hours now, though the girl had never suspected it, a large Carpetfang had caught onto her scent and tracked her patiently through the swampland.  Now in the cover of night, it grew eager to have it's meal it had worked so diligently for.   After all, it hadn't been easy keeping track of such a small thing in all of this overgrown thickets and trees.

But if successful, the prize would be well worth the wait.  Carefully, it slithered silently along the ground, sliding easily through the mud as if it were sand.  It's tongue flicked in and out rapidly as it neared the root from below, snaking it's way up the side closer and closer to the girl...

In seconds, the Carpetfang found itself face to face with it's pretty little prey.  In it's excitement, a very low but loud rumble of a hiss escaped it's lips as they parted hungrily, ready to swallow the girl whole.   However, the snake had wrongly assumed the girl had fallen asleep in it's haste.  Instantly, in response to the sudden hiss that echoed in her ears, the young girl shot up with a gasp.  Her sleepy eyes fought their way open as she found herself uncoordinated in the darkness and she flailed backwards with one of her arms, hitting the Carpetfang square on it's soft fleshy nose.

It was a lucky hit that may have spared her life.  The Carpetfang recoiled instinctively with an angry growl.  The girl turned quickly in the direction of the growl with a fearful whimper.  She was met by only a huge set of red, glowing eyes and a very undefined outline of a huge body.  Instantly she began to scramble away from the threat with a loud scream.  In her panic, she forgot where she was and tumbled off the broad root just as the serpent struck at her with deadly force.  Luckily, in motion, the snake's eyesight had been compromised as well and he lost the girl, gathering himself up upon the log where she had been, his tongue flicking over her lingering scent.

From below where she'd fallen, the girl whimpered in fear as she pulled herself from the mud and crawled under the small crevice the root provided against the ground.  She squeezed herself in the tight space and pressed herself as far against the back of the root as she could, her little chest heaving heavily from her sudden ordeal.  She closed her eyes and prayed that whatever was after her would go away.

Through the massive root, she could hear the the heavy beast above crawling around and it's low hissing.  Suddenly, the movement grew softer and softer until it was unrecognizable from the natural sounds of the swamp around her.  Her eyes frantically scanned what little ground she could see from her crevice to no avail.  Either nothing was moving or it was just too dark to tell.  Slowly, her breathing returned to a normal pace as the silence continued.  Had it gone?  A few seconds went by...  Then minutes.

Then suddenly, the realization that she'd left her beloved doll behind hit her like a ton of bricks.  Her hands fell to the ground around her, desperately searching for anything that felt familiar.  Nothing.  She sat still again, eyes locked on the small entrance.  Cautiously and quietly, she inched forward, listening for any nearby sound.  Silence.  Nothing but the echoing drops of water drops dripping.  She bit her bottom lip anxiously then, against her better judgement, she began to crawl from her hiding spot.  But she had no choice - her doll was irreplaceable...

It was a shear miracle that the girl had lasted this long.  Lady Luck had spared her life from a horrible fate at the jaws of a monster.  But not even Lady Luck could cure the simple naive needs of a child.  As said before, no child could survive in this place.  Not alone.

Just as suddenly as she'd wiggled partly from her hole, the Carpetfang struck.  It's fangs, dripping with venom, snapped hungrily at her head.  With more luck than could be said for most, the child nearly escaped decapitation, it's fangs only snagging her long hair before she was able to force her body back into her hideout.  But it wasn't without injury.  While she may have escaped the venomous bite of the snake, her retreat back into the crevice left her with a large gash across one of her shoulders.  She cried out in pain as the dirt and moss of the bark seeped into the bleeding wound.

There was no escape now.  Her luck had come to an end.  Outside, fueled by the fresh scent of blood, the Carpetfang beat and banged against the cracked sliver in the root, breaking small parts of rotten wood away easily.  It would only be a matter of time before it could reach her.  Pressing herself as flat as she could against the backside, the girl began to sob uncontrollably in the face of death.  And the worst part?  She didn't even have her doll by her side.

"Get. Out."

The sudden echo of a voice sent chills down the girl's spine.  Though it was only two words, the tone spoke with a dangerous air.  Was it the Carpetfang that had spoke?  Through clenched eyes, the girl braved a peak into the Carpetfang's mouth as it snapped hungrily at her frail body still.

"Dumb beast!  Did you not hear me!?", the voice boomed again, loudly enough to make the girl tremble.  That time, she was certain it didn't belong to the snake.  "I said GET OUT!"  A deafening roar caused the girl to scream as she witnessed the Carpetfang's head seemingly being forcefully pulled from the entrance.  But by what?!  Trembling on the ground as she watched stray pieces from the entrance crumble and fall, it was all she could do to keep from bolting from the hole and just running for her life.

Outside there was the terrifying sounds of a scuffle between giants that shook the very root that harbored her.  A blur of dark, figure-less shadows twisted and danced in front of the entrance in a flurry of growls, hisses, and snaps.  Eyes wide and strained to make sense of what was outside her hole, the girl heaved heavily as the noise came to an abrupt end with a painful howl.

There were sounds of sloshing, something retreating through the muck and grime, and the sounds of heavy breathing of an unknown creature...  By now, with her adrenaline pumping full blast, the girl could no longer stay in that hole.  What if that thing came back?  Or worse, what it whatever was still there was even worse!?  Fearing she was dead either way, the girl gathered up enough courage to climb to her feet and scramble from her hole.  If she was going to die here, so be it.  But she was going to get her doll back first!

A towering figure stood to greet her directly outside, causing her to skid to a gasping halt as it spun around with a growl.  Again, all she could make out in the darkness were a pair of red glowing eyes.  Without thinking, the girl quickly turned back towards the root, attempting to scramble up onto the broad platform where she hoped her doll still resided.  A swift motion behind her, slamming against the root, let her know it'd seen her but she kept going as fast as her numb body would carry her.

The beast let out an angry growl before it swiftly launched itself up onto the root in front of the girl threateningly as she reached the plateau.  "Get. Out.", the frightful voice repeated dangerously as it had before.  It shocked the girl as she stood on wobbly legs, gazing up at the looming figure.  She still couldn't make out a shape or figure in this darkness but she was certain that it wasn't the beast that was trying to eat her.  Well, at least not the first beast that was trying to eat her.  This one probably saw her as a midnight snack as well but even so, the small child stood her ground.

Whether it was from the adrenaline dying down, the shock of her ordeals, or the exhaustion her body was experiencing, her eyes began to grow fuzzy and everything began to spin in a dizzying whirl.  She stumbled forward, flailing her arms as she strained to look into the eyes of the beast before her.  Her lips parted weakly as she murmured softly to the beast...

"My doll.  M-my ... my ..." and with that, the monster's eyes blurred and rippled until there was nothing but darkness.

It seemed like only seconds that she'd lost consciousness but as her aching eye lids slowly opened, they were greeted by the welcomed light of a morning sun as it broke through the canopy.  Her body no longer felt as numb as it had before, though her shoulder still stung, as she soon found out when she began to move around to sit up.  A hand first flew to her shoulder with a wince before it slowly went to rub her heavy head as she looked around.

Everything looked ... peaceful.  As peaceful as a place full of giant swamp monsters could be, anyways...  The only sign of life besides herself that was present was the distant calls of some species of bird and the now visible damage from the tussling giants the night before.  Her eyes focused on several gashes and slashes and indents that littered the root's sides and the semi-solid earth below it.  As her mind began to piece together a terrifying image of what she'd encountered last night, her eyes found the one single most important thing in the world - her doll.  It was where she'd last had it, up on the platform, laying among the scattered debris of her makeshift bed.  Instantly in smiles, the girl clumsily scrambled across the bark to squeeze her tattered keepsake joyously.

But it was no time to let your guard down.  "So ... you've awakened..."

The voice was a familiar one - the one she'd heard last night.  And the owner soon made itself known as a large, dragon-esque creature, as it seemingly fell from the canopy above.  It fell upon the root with enough force to make it shake as the girl whirled around in frightened surprise.  To a girl who hadn't seen many Paragon in her lifetime, the creature did not strike her as one straight off.  Most Paragon she'd seen had wings.  And most did not look like this creature.  It had a thick black fur mane that slowly faded to white as it stretched down it's neck ... and long whiskers that protruded from above it's nostrils, copying the coloration of his mane.  Maybe it wasn't a Paragon at all... but maybe some sort of mutated lizard...

Her thoughts were so explosive with what this creature could be that there was a momentary lapse in her fear as it was replaced with confusion, clear by the odd look that crept on her face as she looked up at the dragon.  "Are you a swamp monster?", she asked softly, clutching her doll tightly in her folded arms.

Needless to say, that question wasn't exactly the first thing the Nago had expected out of such a small thing after what had taken place since last night.  He had expected a gasp, a scream, or even her trying to escape once again but instead here she sat with enough carelessness in her to ask a huge dragon if it was a swamp monster.  Was she a fool?  Behind him, his long muscular tail swayed slowly as he straightened his back, sticking out his chest, and giving the girl a most annoyed look.  "Do not lump me together with a mere exaggeration of scared mortal minds.  I am a Nago, a very proud descendant of my Paragon ancestors."  His voice was laced with a hiss.  It was safe to say that he took much pride in being a Paragon.
