Return to Tengel Rainforest

The Sanctum of Zu'hai (Self)

Postby Thunder » 05/19/2014 12:19 AM

(A continuation of this.)

Most people considered the Tengel Rainforest an exceedingly dangerous location. Strange creatures lurked in the undergrowth. Blisteringly hot and humid weather disoriented and killed many unfortunate folk exposed to the elements for too long. Venomous plants and critters thrived throughout the entire region. To top it all off, more recently, the entire jungle was transformed into a tropical battlefield for the second Imperialist and Purine war, mixing the sounds of gunshots and screams in with the shrill cries of unseen animals.

There was one spot in the rainforest, however, that was undoubtedly a haven. Few knew of its existence, as it was nestled deep within a part of the Tengel surrounded by thick plant growth and tricky terrain. It looked a bit like a giant campground with tents pitched everywhere, except the people running around the site were not toasting marshmallows around an open fire. They were all dressed in the white and blue gowns of doctors and nurses, carrying around with them tons of medical equipment and tools. It was a place where lives were saved instead of taken. It was a place named the Sanctum of Zu'hai.

An Eclipse Kuhna emerged from one of the larger tents in the Sanctum, sighing to himself. He held a mug full of cappuccino in one paw and sipped it quietly as he strolled some distance away from the makeshift hospital. It was a long night. There were bags under his eyes, but he couldn't afford time to rest. A fresh wave of patients arrived had quite recently. He needed to tend to them all. As a doctor and one of the founders of the Sanctum, he was not about to let anyone die on his watch, even if the work was exhausting.

The Kuhna, named Jack Kinara, stopped walking once he reached a tidy little clearing nearby. He sat himself down in the center of it and shut his eyes, listening to the calming sounds of the dark hours. In daytime, he never would have allowed himself to leave the Sanctum's perimeter like this in fear of being discovered. After all, there was a war going on, and the Sanctum served neither of the two sides. Or rather, it served all without discrimination. If either the Purine or Imperial army found out that soldiers from the opposing side were receiving treatment under the same roof, there was sure to be mayhem and destruction.

It was relatively safe around these parts after the sun went down, but Jack kept a close ear and eye out for anything suspicious. It was a good thing he was cautious, as there came a rustling amid the trees in a matter of moments. Kinara froze and slowly set down his mug, watching the foliage carefully with narrowed, golden eyes. It was either someone seeking the Sanctum's help, an enemy, or simply some wild animal passing by. He would gladly assist the first, but if it was the second, he had hidden under his doctor's jacket a serum he could forcibly inject to knock a person out and clear their most recent memories.

Branches and leaves parted to reveal a Temple Hollowheart carrying a terribly injured and ill looking Albie on his back. Jack was impressed by the dragon's stealth. Hollowhearts were by no means small creatures, yet this one managed to make no sound until it got very close. It gazed down at him with its softly glowing white eyes. Then, it settled down quietly in front of Kinara.

"I am Paryth," the Hollowheart greeted. "I once was this Albie's servant. He is in danger of losing his life now. Can you help him?"

Good. He was not someone seeking to uproot the Sanctum. Jack nodded and rose, making sure to grab his mug. "Follow me," he said, and they headed back to the camp together.

They found an empty bed in one of the tents to lay the Albie on so Jack could take a closer look at him. Parts of the new patient's white fur was dyed with Imperialist red, but oddly enough, there was no badge, pendant, or anything signifying his allegiance. A while back, there were rumors going around of an Albie assassin who had deserted the Imperial army. Perhaps this was the same individual. He certainly seemed to be wearing the tattered remnants of an assassin's shadowy cloak. It was a strange situation, as Paryth donned a Purine badge around his neck.

Backgrounds, however, did not matter in the Sanctum of Zu'hai. Everyone who needed medical assistance would receive it. Jack asked for a nurse to be summoned to the Albie's side, and soon enough, one came walking through the tent flaps.

She was a beautiful Soveris sporting feathers and markings of light blue, gray, and white, not unlike the hues of the Purines. She rushed over to the Albie and gasped upon seeing his broken body. "Oh great Zu'hai!" she exclaimed. "What happened to this poor fellow?"

"He was deliriously stumbling around near the outskirts of Starlight Town when I found him," Paryth answered. "How he got injured, I am not sure."

The nurse nodded. She removed the ripped up cloak from the Albie to begin a visual investigation of his injuries, checking his head, eyes, limbs, back, tail, and just about every other visible part of him. There were many cuts and bruises amid the unkempt, dirty fur. One of the front legs was misshapen and had sharp stones embedded into it. The Albie did not look emaciated and in fact boasted quite a bit of muscle, but based on Paryth's account, he may not have had much to drink or eat recently. There was only one way to find out.

The Soveris took a deep breath and gently placed one hand on top of the patient. The white Seraph patterns on her body began to glow as she ran her talons across the Albie like she was scanning him. "Severe damage to the front left leg," she murmured, hovering above the limb in question. "Bones completely shattered. Signs of infection." She then moved to his forehead. "...no signs of brain injury." Over his heart, she announced that his pulse and breathing were faint, and at his gut, she declared that he was lacking fluids and needed nourishment. "His muscles also appear to have been worked strenuously," she concluded.

"Alicia here has a gift," Jack explained to Paryth, who was watching the analysis with interest. "What we can only detect with machinery, equipment, and samples, she can deduce just like that."

"I had a vision from Sa'ouna, a demi-goddess under Yepha, several years ago," Alicia added. "My mother was having an attack of some sort, and the ambulance was slow. I panicked, but then I heard Sa'ouna's voice in my head, and I suddenly found myself with this power. It gave me an idea of how to administer some preliminary aid to my mother until the ambulance arrived."

Here, she paused in thought and remembrance. "I always wanted to be a teacher, but after that experience, I desired to put my powers to good use. And so I created this Sanctum with Jack."

Paryth nodded in understanding. Some folks who did not believe in the Evelonian Triumvirate would probably find Alicia's story crazy, but the Hollowheart and a few of his close companions had seen the demi-goddesses for themselves back in the first war. At some point, he, a Serraptor soldier named Ridge, and his young master Zears had all been slain in battle. But the demi-goddesses brought them back to life. It was not surprising that deities with the power to resurrect even the dead could also grant medical knowledge.

"I'm worried about that front leg," Jack grunted, gesturing at the horribly mangled limb. "If the bones are completely wrecked, I doubt we'd be able to mend them. He may require an amputation. We'll also have to give him some nutrients and liquids intravenously. Actually, let's do that right now."

There was already an IV pole present by the bed, but Alicia had to go fetch the bags containing the fluids their patient needed. After she left, Jack hooked up the Albie to a number of devices that would monitor his vital signs. He turned the machines on and took a look at the readings. They confirmed Alicia's suspicions.

"What's this guy's name?" Kinara asked Paryth rather brusquely, taking out a notepad to jot down some data.

"Karon Inmara," the Hollowheart replied. The Kuhna wrote that down on his notes.

"Hm. That does sound pretty familiar. Inmara is a big name among the Imperials, if I'm remembering right. How are you his former servant, then, if you're a Purine?"

"There were some divisions. But he is not an Imperialist anymore."

That got Jack's own memories jogging. He too, once worked under the Imperial army, but a certain case long ago led him to renounce them.

It felt like yesterday that he was in college. At the ripe age of 19, Jack had been admitted into one of the most prestigious undergraduate programs in Medicai City, a five year undertaking at Katabras University. He could still recall the great excitement that flooded him upon learning of his acceptance. Medicine had always been in his blood; he loved nothing more than dissecting animals in biology class and pestering his physicians about their work. Katabras had a beautiful campus too, full of gorgeously gilded alabaster buildings and verdant gardens. It was a perfect match for Kinara.

Like all medical programs, Jack's time at Katabras was fraught with difficult classes and hours upon hours of studying for admissions tests for medical school. His love for the subject did not make him immune to frustration. He stayed up late many nights to review material and finish homework, and his social life took a blow from his work ethic. The Kuhna never considered himself to be good with people, however, and derived most of his pleasure from assisting professors in labs and interning at the Katabras Hospital. There was stress, but it was manageable.

Overall, he had a great experience at university, and he expected to graduate on time with hopefully a few distinctions and honors to his name. But everything abruptly changed during his senior year when the first War for the Tear rolled around.

Along with the rest of the Lambastian continent, Medicai City was drawn into the conflict. In preparation for the inevitable bloodshed, hundreds of thousands of medical personnel from all over the land were hired by the Imperialist army, draining a lot of talent from Katabras. The program Jack was part of got indefinitely suspended. This move was incredibly unpopular among the students, but it was a necessary sacrifice. There simply wasn't enough staff to keep the program going during wartime.

Jack did not stop studying even in those unfortunate circumstances. As the war dragged on, however, it became evident that the Purines were winning, and lots of the folks who left Katabras would never return again. The number of open medical positions on the Imperialist side grew higher and higher. Eventually, the army was forced to conscript students, a risky choice as many of Kinara's peers did not have the knowledge necessary for serious medical work.

Most bemoaned being forced to serve in the military, but here, Jack saw opportunity. Choosing to ignore the politics behind the whole scenario, he voluntarily hopped in with the Imperial forces, hoping to gain some valuable hands on experience in the field. He officially began his duties in autumn. Treating wounded soldiers was much more intense than anything he had ever done. He made mistakes, some deadlier than others, but forcing himself to encounter medical procedures and emergencies in the real world taught him swiftly. In a matter of months, he was permitted to help with surgeries, specializing in orthopedics and trauma.

Putting his knowledge to use was so enjoyable that Jack did not question his allegiance until one rainy afternoon. That day, he was sent outside of the Imperialist infirmary to gather herbs for certain concoctions that the more traditional healers used. He did not mind the weather and hummed a quiet tune to himself as he worked. Rummaging all over the field he was told to go to, the young doctor placed berries, grasses, and roots into the bag he carried.

Suddenly, he heard what sounded like a woman groaning in the distance. Jack's head shot up and he peered into the thin mist the rainfall created. There was a partially obscured figure limping in his direction. The sight and the pained moaning were all quite eerie in combination with the weather, but the only horror story going on was the war. The Eclipse Kuhna immediately stopped what he was doing and warily approached the figure to see what was happening.
Image

The stranger turned out to be a grievously injured Purine Magistrey. One of her wings had a bunch of feathers torn out of it, leaving it covered in dark red blood. A scar over her right eye kept it sealed shut, and from the way she hobbled, it appeared that she had an injured leg as well. The Purine badge hanging from her neck was covered in grime.

She saw Jack and began making her way towards him very slowly. Although the avian was from the opposing army, the Kuhna couldn't help but run to her upon seeing the extent of her wounds. This was a terrible situation; the Magistrey needed a doctor straight away. However, there wasn't a Purine infirmary anywhere in the area. Could he manage to deliver this wounded warrior to the Imperial medical center instead?

"H-help..." the Magistrey rasped weakly. Jack sighed and decided that trying the Imperialist infirmary was better than nothing. He supported the bird with his body and started leading her there.

"I'll try," he told her, "but unfortunately, I can't take you to the Purines here. They're too far."

She nodded. Desperation drove her to accept assistance from the enemy.

As they slowly made their way back to the infirmary, Jack fretted about what might happen if his comrades saw him with a Purine soldier. Would they accuse him of treachery? Or would they think that he had been the one to hurt her and praise him for a false deed? Any number of things could happen. He wanted to avoid being spotted at all. That meant taking a few longer routes to evade more populated areas, which was in hindsight rather selfish and not the best for the Magistrey. Her wing was still bleeding, and Jack's choice of roads only prolonged her suffering unintentionally.

In time, the odd pair arrived back at the medical center. Kinara took the Purine to one of the emergency rooms, trying to ignore the weird stares and glares the Imperialists gave him as he passed by. When he walked inside, the doctor, a bulky, gruff Rabbot MG1, was already busy talking to another soldier who had arrived from the battlefield complaining of extreme dizziness and fatigue. He started at the sound of Jack entering, his head shooting up to meet the Kunna's grim gaze.
Image

"Doctor Emfiran, I..." Jack began.

"WHAT ARE YOU DOING?" Emfiran roared, jabbing a paw in the direction of the Magistrey. "That's a PURINE!" His eyes grew so wide that they looked like they would burst out of their sockets. Motioning for his patient to wait for a moment, he whirled around and stormed towards Jack.

Emfiran pressed his face right up to Jack's. The Kuhna backed away in dread, but the Rabbot only closed the distance between them again. "First of all," the doctor spat, "knock when you enter, for Xai're's sake! It is not only rude to barge in, but also a breach of protocol! Patients' privacy must be respected, and unless it's an emergency, you shouldn't go in a room if they don't say you can! Second of all..."

The raving Rabbot grabbed the Magistrey by the feathery mane around her neck, pulling her to him and forcing a shrill cry of pain out of her. Jack felt red hot rage boiling up inside him and shot out a paw to stop Emfiran. There was a loud slap as the doctor quickly smacked him away. He clenched his teeth at the sting of the strike.

"This! Is called the IMPERIAL infirmary for a reason!" Emfiran screeched. "What are you thinking, bringing Purine scum into this place? There is a lot of valuable information here, and we absolutely cannot let that fall into enemy hands! Your actions are treasonous, Kinara! You could be punished by death!"

With the door to the emergency room still wide open, everyone in the facility could hear Emfiran's enraged bellows. A crowd had started to gather around the premises, murmuring to each other about the scene unfolding before them.

"She...she's hurt!" Jack stammered, watching the Magistrey writhe in the doctor's grasp. "But she can easily be saved! Look, the extent of her wounds aren't that bad. They just need some cleaning up and..."

"IMBECILE!" Emfiran continued to scream. "I will have NONE of this!" He glared into the throng beyond the door and snapped his fingers in the air. "Someone fetch the guards and take these two away!"

Two Gallizars busted into the room and snatched up Jack and the Magistrey. Surgeon and bird both flailed around wildly, trying to escape the reptiles' clutches, but Jack didn't know a thing about self defense, and the avian was in no shape to make a run for it. They were roughly escorted out of the hospital grounds and taken to a nearby Imperialist center of command, where an old Battleheart general and a few of his troops intercepted them, having been alerted of the situation over radio.

Image

"What in Xai're's name is going on here?" the dragon growled, narrowing his eyes at the captives. Even without the angry glare, he was an intimidating beast, towering over everybody else and covered in ferocious, spiked armor. Dark smoke billowed out from between his fangs as he spoke.

"General Keaton, this Kuhna brought a Purine soldier into our infirmary with the intent to treat her," the Gallizar holding Jack explained. The Battleheart's gaze soured even further.

"Do you not know a thing about war, boy?" he hissed at the Kuhna. "Purines are not permitted in our territory exempting rare circumstances. Those situations must be approved by me. Your deeds could cost you your life, if I see it fit. Do you understand?"

"Y-yes, general." Jack gave a small, fearful nod and looked down at his feet. This entire day had gone to hell. He never should have brought the Magistrey here.

"We're low on medical staff," Keaton grunted, "so I'll let you go this time. But be warned, cat. We will keep an eye on you from now on. As useful as your skills may be, you are not irreplaceable. Cross the line a second time and you will die. As for you, deary..."

The Battleheart swung his head in the Magistrey's direction. "My squad will take care of you right here and right now."

The other Gallizar shoved the Purine soldier into the hands of Keaton's men. The poor Magistrey let loose ungodly screeches as they nabbed her by the wings and pinned her to the command center's rough stone wall, her bloody wing leaving splatters on it. Jack, realizing what they were about to do, turned his head away and shut his eyes tight. As a surgeon, he was used to seeing blood, guts, and all sorts of gruesome injuries, but this was another beast entirely.

One of the Imperialists, a Draculi, stepped up to the Magistrey, snarling. In a blur of bristling amber fur, it raked its claws across her neck, sending a spurt of crimson shooting into the air. The Magistrey emitted a noise that sounded half like a squawk and half like air seeping out of a pressurized container. Her head flopped to the side. Keaton's troops let go of her, and she crumpled to the ground, still.

"Send the Kuhna back where he came from," the Battleheart ordered. The Gallizars nodded and tugged Jack away from the scene. Deep in his heart, Kinara felt shattered. He was a surgeon, someone who was supposed to help save lives. Instead, his foolishness led the Magistrey to a brutal death.

Rain continued to fall from the low, gray clouds.

Working in the Imperialist infirmary was never the same again. Whenever he had to leave the hospital, Jack was required to be accompanied by a guard, in case he tried to bring in any more "meddlesome Purines", as Emfiran put it. Distrust gave him fewer opportunities to exercise his surgical skills. Everywhere he went, he was greeted with hostile glances and whispered rumors that he was a spy or some kind of saboteur. It made him feel cornered and pathetic, but the worst thing was still his fathomless guilt over his actions. Could he have done anything differently that would have saved the Magistrey? He knew it was pointless to hypothesize about the past, especially since she could have died no matter what course he took, but the surgeon couldn't help asking himself.

It was during one chilly afternoon, over a steamy cup of his favorite cappuccino, that Jack realized he had to escape. This place was oppressing him and causing him to constantly relive that bloody day. Unfortunately, he had no idea how to get out. Being under constant surveillance did not made the notion practically impossible. If only there were some way to distract the guards or otherwise knock them out.

That was the first time Jack got the idea of using anesthetic injections. As a surgeon, he was always around a reliable supply of anesthesia and needles. If he could conceal a dose under his clothes and then ask to leave the infirmary, he could render the guard unconscious once they were a good distance away from the Imperialists. With this plan in mind, Kinara began making preparations to leave, thinking over what items he should take with him or leave behind on his day of departure.

A few months after the incident, there was a morning so foggy that no one could see past several yards. The conditions were ripe for invasion, and so the Imperialist encampments in the area were put on high alert in case the Purines decided to use the mist to their advantage. Jack saw opportunity here. The fog would conceal him well once he ran away, and the guards would be too wary of an attack to leave the infirmary and look for him if they noticed his absence. If anything, his mysterious disappearance might lead them to think he was killed by a Purine soldier. If there was any time to flee, it was now.

He headed into the tent he called home and used his tails to pick up a briefcase filled with basic supplies, as well as the anesthetic he had hidden away beforehand. Among his sparse belongings was also an envelope containing a letter, a phony message, which he would use as his excuse to leave the premises. Jack had fabricated a story where his mother had fallen ill, and he wanted to send a letter to her to ask how she was faring. As the makeshift post office at the infirmary was strictly for business purposes, he would have to walk to another Imperialist base to drop off the message.

He hoped it would be a believable tale.

He made his way to the exit of the infirmary area, which was nothing more than one gatehouse with several armed guards stationed by it. Today there was a Royal Baskerville on duty, along with a Serraptor and a Fellox who both boasted the red and white hues of the Imperialists. Jack shivered. He was already intimidated. With the way those guards were keenly scanning the surroundings for intruders and how proudly they wore their colors, a black wave of doubt began to wash over the young doctor's mind.

But no, he could not give in now. He had to do this, for his own sake.

He cleared his throat and stepped up to the guards. The Baskerville glanced at him and then walked over to meet him, narrowed eyes pinned sharply on Jack.

"You are Doctor Kinara, if I'm not mistaken," the canine huffed. "You are not to leave the premises without an escort, as ordered by General Keaton. What is your destination, doctor? And what is your intention?"

"I...I have a letter to deliver," Jack stammered. Not only was his heart pounding from the Baskerville's glare, he was also having quite some trouble facing him because of the guard's pungent breath, which reeked oddly of blood. "It's an emergency. I've recently gotten word that my mother has fallen ill, and I would like to send a message to her to ask how she is doing."
