Botany Expedition (Self)

Postby Sitara » 07/06/2014 12:50 PM

Morgaine walked up to the entrance to the Tengel Rainforest with a big smile on her face. Finally she would be able to restock her potion supplies and with help from a professional botanist on top of that. She grimaced as she remembered what happened the first time she went plant gathering by herself and came home with spanish moss instead of hornwort moss. Her poor spell room smoked for days when she had added it into the protection potion. That was in the past though and she was determined not to make the same mistake again.

Her tail flicked with impatience as she waited for Scotch to show up. She did not like to be kept waiting, although she was a bit early for her appointment with Scotch so she would let it slide. She and Scotch had gone out plant hunting many times together, he for his environmental cataloging and research and she for potion specimens, and he was always five minutes early. This outing he was going to be right on time. As she wondered just what could have kept him she saw someone rushing up the path toward her. This must be Scotch.

Scotch ran down the path that would take him to the entrance of the Tengel Rainforest. Of all the times to not be early for an appointment, this could end badly if handled the wrong way. He gulped as he thought of the possibilities. Morgaine had always treated him with kindness and respect, but you do not make her angry. No sir, you do not. Woe to the mortal who angered the witch. Witchcraft had been a hard concept for him to believe in, being a kuhna of science. Morgaine had changed his mind about that rather quickly after he had met her. He skidded to a stop as he reached her at the beginning of the jungle path. "I'm..." he stopped to pant for a few second. "Sorry I'm a scientist, not an athlete. I hope you haven't been waiting long?"

"It's alright Scotch. Technically you're on time and I was early. I would like to know what kept you though, it must have been important to have kept you from your usual schedule." She turned toward the towering trees. "We can walk and talk though. I am rather anxious to start on our hunting expedition." She is about to start walking forward when she freezes mid step, stops walking and begins to dig around in a basket that she brought with her. "I made a list of plants that I'm particularly interested in finding today,if there is any special places you know of where we can stop and find them." There were so many spells to concoct when she returned to her underwater castle. She hoped that they would be done quickly so that she start as soon as possible.

Scotch takes the list from Morgaine. "I can't guarantee we'll find everything, but let's see what you have." He glances down the list where she had included: Adder's Tongue, Anemone, Bleeding Heart, Cinnamon, Cypress, Dragon's Blood, Dragon's Egg, Heliotrope, Lotus, Mandrake, Orris Root, Skullcap, Tea Leaves, Turnips, and Vanilla. "Hmm.... Most of these we should be able to find." He thanked his lucky stars that most of the plants she had included were nonpoisonous. Mandrake however was a big exception. He was about to ask her what she would be using it for but changed his mind, he really didn't want to know. One question still nagged at him though. "Why on earth have you included turnips?"

Morgaine laughed softly "You are avoiding my question Scotch, but I will still answer yours." She takes back her list and puts it back into her basket. "Turnips are used in spells to end relationships and for protection. One of my clients is in a rather bad relationship that needs a safe and quiet ending and I am going to give her just that." She picked up her basket again and turned towards the forest. "Are you ready to go?"

Scotch was a bit taken aback. "Yes, we can get started." He follows her into the jungle. Thankfully they were both fairly small and the path was mostly clear so they didn't need to be hacking away at the brush that surrounded them. "I suppose that you're not going to let me escape why I was not my usual punctual self this morning." He took a deep breath "My soon to be stepdaughter Devany had a small accident this morning. I went into her shop to get a croissant before I met you. She wasn't up front so her assistant told me to look for her in the kitchen, so I did. Apparently she didn't hear me come in and I scared her she dropped the open bag of flower she was carrying covering us both in flour. Needless to say I had to go home and clean up." They continued forward Scotch kicking vines and other debri out of the way. "You know I had no idea that you had clients. I suppose it would make sense, but uh... how does one go about hiring a witch?"

Morgaine did her best to stifle a laugh as she pictured Scotch covered in flour. "At least she wasn't working with knives. You would be a living voodoo doll." As she walked forward the plants moved out of her path as though they knew they were in her way and wished to apease her. "There are ways of finding me. Mostly through word of mouth , but there are other ways. Sometimes we even find each other, just like we did." She turns a courner and comes to face one of the most exotic plants she had ever seeb. It was as tall as she was with large red leaves at the top that resembled lips. "Well, my goodness. What an interesting plant. Scotch do you know anything about this plant?"

Scotch walked past Morgaine to closely examine the plant. "No doubt about it. This is Psychotria poeppigiana. Otherwise known as the Hot Lips plant. It is actually part of the coffee family and you can make dyes out of its roots." he was starting to get into his groove now. Discussing plants was his favorite thing to do and once you got him started it was very hard to get him to stop. Especially since he was good at finding similarities between species and could hop from species to species and lose himself in a half hour conversation before he realized it. "The red section is actually leaves, not flowers. the flowers are very small and white appearing in between the two 'lips'. Legends say that if you lean in and listen the 'lips' will whisper the name of the male or female who will marry you. However, that is a load of nonsense." His eyes light up as he spies a new plant "Oh yes! This plant is interesting as well." He walks up to it and  begins to examine it "This is a jungle geranium, also a part of the coffee family. Just look at how large these groupings of flowers are!" Oh yes, he was definitely in his element now.

"Hmm. Is that right." She ignores his exited musing on other plants and puts her ear next to the hot lips plant. She heard a small high-pitched voice whisper Element. Well now, that was interesting. Not that the outcome surprised her in the slightest. That Element would have to get stronger in the near future if she was going to marry him. Poor fragile mortal. She looked for Scotch and he was lecturing about another plant species. It always amazed her that he could lecture even if no one was paying attention. She noticed a small shrub out of the corner of her eye. It looked like mandrake, but she wanted to be sure. "Scotch,  is this mandrake? I think it is, but I'd rather you double check."

Scotch was a bit upset about being interrupted by a question. He was on a roll too. Of course, she had hired him to come out with her so there was no sense in complaining. It wasn't one of classes anyway. He sidles up next to Morgaine to see what plant she had found. It was a dark green leafy plant with small purple flowers. "Ah, yes this is mandrake. It was once rumored to have the ability to kill you when you first picked it by screaming at you." He uproots the plant and passes it to Morgaine. "Obviously, since we're still alive that is not true." He smiles "Will you be needing more. I can see a few other specimens nearby."

"No thank you, one should be enough." She holds up the mandrake root to examine it. No matter how many times she saw this root it always surprised her how much they looked like a miniature person. She placed the root into her basket. She looked down the trail ahead and saw that it split in two. One fork headed right was much greener and more jungle-like. The other fork heading left had plants that seemed more forest-like "That's one off my list. Which direction should we head next?"

Scotch looked down both pathways and then reexamined the list that Morgaine had given him. "For now we'll head down the right path. I know that there is a waterfall around this area and we should be able to find lotus and bleeding heart there." He puts the list back into Morgaine's basket and begins to walk down the right path. The land declined slightly and he knew that they were headed in the right direction. "With the lotus and bleeding heart do you need the whole plant or just clippings?"

Morgaine slung her basket over onto her back, she was very thankful the strap was leather so that she could do that, and followed Scotch down the pathway. "I should only need flower clippings for the bleeding heart. The lotus, however, I will need the root. As long as you can help me identify it I'll swim out to go and get it. There is no sense in making you get wet and I'm fairly certain that I am a better swimmer than you are." She laughed quietly. Scotch, as wonderful a hiker as he is, is not much of a swimmer. Finally they made it to the waterfall. The beauty of the place took her breath away. The waterfall must have been fifty feet up above them and the water that was crashing down at their feet was a beautiful sky blue. "How lovely."

Scotch stopped to admire the scenery as well. The way the light was hitting the waterfall was just perfect and how the water shimmered and shined on the plant leaves was lovely. However, they had job to do here and as much as he would like to rest his paws a while he knew that they must press on. He begins to examine the plant life around the edge of the pond first as it was easiest to see and reach. He reaches the middle of the pond when he finally spots one. "Aha! Miranda I found one over here." He examines the plant next to it "There is one more lotus plant here but it's in seed. Would you like that one as well?"

Morgaine reaches Scotch's side and looks at the lovely large pink flower that rested on top of the massive green pad. Out of all the flowers lotus blossoms were one of her favorites. She looks at the other plant that Scotch had indicated and gets very excited. "yes, I'll want that one too lotus pods and seeds can be very handy in love potions." She places her basket on the ground. "I'll go get them. They're not too far away." She dives in sending waves across the once mirror-like surface. Although she can breathe underwater she pops her head above the surface to make sure she grabs the correct plant. She dives back down to completely uproots the blooming lotus. She then picks the seed pod from the other lotus plant. Morgaine does leave behind two seeds hoping that they will bloom into more lovely plants and swims ashore. When she climbs out of the water she puts that plants into her basket and uses magic to instantly dry herself.
