Hearts of Darkness

Trees rustled forcefully as a shape cut its way thought their leaves, moving so quickly that it was nothing but a pale green, pounding blur. The swath through the trees changed direction suddenly, arcing right at a nearly perfect 90 degrees. Then it stopped, and the green-and-mauve feathered head of a Mossdog shot into view. It parted dangerous jaws, releasing a chirruping growl, and disappeared again into the foliage.

Another, larger shape followed the Mossdog's path, carving a much wider trail through the rainforest fronds. Where the Mossdog's head had been a few moments before, a green-scaled claw smashed a leafy sapling viciously aside. In its emerald absence, a tall, pale-skinned girl was revealed, with green almost as vivid as the forest trees spilling from the roots of her blonde hair. Full lips were stretched into a fanged grin, her cobalt eyes nearly glowing with some strong emotion. After a moment, the scaly claw shrunk eerily into a delicate, slim-fingered hand.

The girl frowned. "Would you slow down?" She yelled ahead at the Mossdog - or at least, in his general direction. "Not all of us can go traipsing along through the rainforest as if it's home, you know."

The Mossdog's head appeared again, farther ahead of her than the disguised Battlefang would have thought. He whipped his head around to face her, giving another growl that sounded more like a hiss.

The Battlefang snarled. "Tepid, we are not just out for a stroll." Organic she may be, but Myra would never have chosen the Tengel Rainforest for a nonchalant stroll. "I don't know why we're out here, actually." Myra blinked, realizing that she was barely hearing the Mossdog's reply. She looked after Tepid, and could barely see him. She started after him angrily.

"Curse it, Mossdog! Would you just slow down!"

The oddly named Mossdog ran on, pausing only now and again to poke his head from the foliage, comment lightly upon it in his own peculiar way, and return to his race. He seemed contently to stay moving, doubling back on his own trail only to appease Myra. The Battlefang's actions troubled Tepid. She could make her way through this tense jungle as easily as he could, perhaps even more so. So why did she tromp about like this?

Emerging just ahead of her, Tepid poked his head out from its camoflage of leaves, greeny-yellow eyes fixed on his companion. Ignoring Myra's exasperated curses, the Mossdog aired his displeasure at her behaviour thus far with a series of clicks, chirps, hisses and growls. His teeth flashed like small knives.

Within minutes, Myra's human shape grew and twisted in ways it shouldn't have been able to. Pale skin melted into sparkling green scales; blonde hair twisted upward to form twining horns. The Battlefang snarled her reply at the Mossdog, curling her lip to bare dangerous fangs; neither of them needing words for the moment. Myra refused to be berated by Tepid, a beast that few but she could actually understand. Tepid refused to allow Myra to act in a manner so unbecoming to her color.

A moment more of this, and Mossdog and Battlefang seemed to come to some kind of an agreement. Both turned and and progressed silently into the deeper trees of the Tengel.

Myra crawled under fur and frond, making a surprisingly small amount of noise as she did so, considering that she was a gigantic green dragon, and all. Her wings were flattened as she prowled across the earth, their membranes looking like nothing more than a glimpse of clear sky or rippling water between the plant leaves. The Battlefang snarled mirthlessly. "We have no reason to be here, Tepid," she growled. "Let us turn back. If Discord is not yet ready for us at the Terminal, then there are other places that we may go."

The Mossdog ignored his companion, the pace of his vibrant claws slackened for once as he paced forward slowly. He would narrow his eyes, poke his head forward, and jab with his muzzle into the brush; only to emerge with a quiet hiss of displeasure, and stalk forward again. Obviously, he was hunting something, and Myra viewed this with an intimidating curl of her teeth.

"Tepid," she snarled slowly. "What are you doing?"

A hiss was her reply.

"We are not hunting for Moonlings!" She cried indignantly. "Discord has no need for Moonlings, and you know her way: we do not disturb the state of other beasts unless there is a need for us to! You can't just hunt a creature like a Moonling on a whim!"

Tepid jerked up, his eyes threating, and let out an exasperated, chirping growl. Since when do you follow Discord's ways, Themyscira? He seemed to hiss defiantly.

The question stopped the Organic Battlefang short. Why had she thought to acknowledge the wishes of a single - she could not say with certainty human - girl? "We are not hunting Moonlings..." She murmured again, quieter than before, but did not try to stop Tepid as he continued his search.

Tepid poked his way into frond and fauna, leathery snout broaching the shadows beneath bushes and trees. He hissed displeasure again. He had looked beneath all manner of foliage, hunted all of the dark places her could think of, and there were still no Moonlings? The Mossdog sat up indignantly, his maw opened in a hiss of anger.

Myra watched him in silence, tension and confusion radiating from her large form. He poked around, spun deeper into the jungle, poked around again, hissed his frustation. The Battlefang shook her head.

"Tepid, you know you'll never find them that way." She growled quietly. The Mossdog ignored her. "Moonlings are crafty creatures, and the Tengel is large. It's their home. They're probably watching you right now, happily concealed, and laughing their heads off."

Tepid rounded on her with another hiss, his cry gone shrill with the thought that the older creature might be right. Be quiet!, he seemed to chirp, before plunging back into the jungle. Myra could see nothing but his tail as he wove through the trees. She shook her head again.
