Deep in a dark underground lab, a lone light blinks green. Behind it, a slow whirring picks up and a pair of glowing blue eyes pop open. Blinking slowly, the eyes move from side to side before an electronic voice rings out.
"Sthgil no."
There is a pause of silence before an electronic female voice answers, "Lights set to automatic", proceeded by a wave of light as the bars in the ceiling come to life one by one.
Blinking again, the raptor stepped out of its alcove, pausing only as various wires fall away from its body. Looking around again, the raptor makes its way towards the closest door, not even glancing at the cyborg girl floating in a tank nearby.

As it leaves the room, the lights in the hallway flicker on as the lights behind him turn off. Turning, it heads up the stairs and pushes on what appears to be a solid wall. Silently, the wall gives way, revealing an office on the other side. The velix does not pause as it moves across the room, not even bothering to turn and look at the door sliding seamlessly back into place. Only when it approaches a set of double doors does it stop. With a whir and click, the automaton voice speaks again.
"Rood Nepo."
There is a long pause before the female voice responds, "Coast clear. Proceeding to open doors."

Once outside, the velix paused for a very long time. One might have thought it had somehow shut off, but for a constant whirring noise. Finally, there was a click.
"Won tahw? Ti si ton ekil ereht si gnihtyna ot od dnuora ereh."
Then a sound reaches it, a loud bang that reverberates through the air. With a creaking noise, the raptor's head tilts to the side in curiosity before it stiffly turns and begins to walk along the wall. Above, the palm trees only partially obscure the grand marble palace of the Beach. Approaching the rear of the building, the location of the staff kitchens, it peers around the edge of the wall. It discovers a plume of black smoke billowing out from the stained glass windows of the kitchen closest to it. Approaching slowly, it looked into the nearest window.

There wasn't much to see there, it could only make out vague shapes of people scrambling about franticly (and coughing). Before the velix could decide what to do next, the back door swung open, drawing its attention. A woman appeared, her chef's outfit tinged with grey soot and a squirming boy in her arms. Plopping the boy down onto the grassy path, she returned through the doorway, slamming it shut behind her without a word.

The boy stared up at the door, his big blue eyes wide in shock. After a moment, he looked down and picked at his blackened pants, looking rather put out. The velix analyzed the boy as it did anything it came across. Initial evaluations placed the boy at about 5 years old, with chocolate brown hair and a round, naturally tan face. Every inch of him was covered, head to foot, in a thin layer of soot. The velix estimated by the boy's movements and various minute details that he was a honeydew in human form.

It wasn't long before the boy noticed he wasn't alone. Looking up at the velix, he blinked in surprise, before grinning as if nothing had happened previously. Taking the boy's wave as an invitation, the velix stepped towards him, blinking in curiosity. There was a pause as the boy waited patiently for it to speak. With a whir and a click, the velix asked,
"Tahw Deneppah?"
The boy frowned. He shook his head.
"I dunno what you're saying," he said. The velix paused in thought before saying, with another whir and click,
"I nac ton keaps ekil uoy nac."
The boy stared at it uncomprehendingly and the velix considered abandoning his attempts and moving on. Before it could decide anything, the boy's eyes brightened as if he'd had an idea. The velix blinked.
"Hey, I know someone who can speak a lot of things! He knows a whooooole bunch of big and important words!"
The velix paused for a long time, trying to decide how to handle this situation. Eventually it just decided to go along with whatever happened and clicked at the boy. Not like there was anything else for it to do. Taking the velix's click as consent, the boy jumped up eagerly and took off past the velix up the path.
"Come on!"

The velix followed the boy as best it could, though its hardware was not really designed for speed. Despite its best efforts to keep up, the boy still had to stop and wait every now and then for the velix. Though it took a while, the two eventually made it to the entrance to the Guardian Caves. The boy bounded in without a second thought, but the velix hesitated. It had never been in there before, and was fairly certain strangers weren't supposed to wander into the different areas of the Beach. But the boy was already gone, so it reluctantly followed. As the two descended the gentle rocky slope into the cave depths, the velix began to twitch in anticipation of crossing one of the large monstrous creatures known to inhabit the place. The intensifying heat did nothing to help.

Looking down the many offshoots and into adjacent caverns, the velix began to wonder if the boy even knew where he was going. After all, how well could a 5 year old honeydew know a cave of fire?
Suddenly, a large head 4 times the size of the velix appeared in the entrance to another cavern. The velix hadn't even noticed it, due to the rock-like colouring of its...skin? scales? The shock of seeing such a monster made the velix freeze up completely and nearly fried the mechanical parts of the poor thing's brain. Such shock really isn't good for the little thing. The boy appeared unfazed.

The boy skittered up the large rock-monster, which had just noticed their presence and looked down at the newcomers vacantly. The boy cupped his hands around each side of his mouth and shouted,
"Hey! Do you know where Kon is?"
The monster face did not move, almost blending back in with the surrounding rock. Just as the boy was about to shout again, it slowly blinked and turned its head in the other direction, staring pointedly at a particular offshoot farther into the cave. The boy followed its gaze and grinned. Cupping his hands again, he shouted,
"Thanks!"
He skipped away happily. Behind him, the velix managed to unfreeze itself (for the most part), and stiffly began to follow. It looked back just as the monster face blinked sleepily and retreated back into its cavern, apparently returning to a nap.

As the two entered the offshoot, the boy turned suddenly, as if realizing something important.
"Hey, what's your name?"
The velix blinked slowly. There was a long whir before the click.
"Etahcra."
The boy's face scrunched up in concentration.
"Eeeee-taaaahhh-"
A short whir, click, and,
"Kra."
The velix's electronic voice almost sounded exasperated, but the boy didn't seem to notice.
"I'ma call you Kra, kay?"
The velix just stared ahead flatly. It had given up attempting any control on the situation. Satisfied with his own decision, the boy turned to move on before skittering to a halt and turning back.
"Oh! And I'm Choco, kay? Try it!"
The velix stared. The boy waved his hands encouragingly and the velix let out a noise that somewhat resembled a sigh.
"Ocohc."
The boy frowned, somewhat indignantly.
"No! No! Choco! Chock-oh!"
The velix simply stared and the boy gave up.

The two continued down the tunnel and just as it started to get dark around them, they noticed a light ahead. The boy perked up in excitement and ran ahead, disappearing into a cavern. The velix followed curiously. It could hear the boy's voice chattering excitedly in the room and presumed they had found this 'Kon' character.
"Oh! There he is!"

The velix had entered the cavern and found itself facing another raptor-like creature. Unlike it, this one was all natural, and had feathers. It was a good few feet bigger too. Analyzing it, the velix determined it to be a male venom gyrraptor. Kon stepped forward and stood in front of the velix, looking it over curiously with its head twitching and moving constantly, like a bird.
"You are Kra? What language do you speak?"
The velix stared up at it, vaguely interested.
"Hsilgen. Tsuj ton lamron."
Kon's mouth moved silently, repeating the velix's words to himself.

After several motions of his head, he jolted upright with wide eyes as if the answer to his silent question had suddenly dawned on him. He lowered his head to an inch from the velix's so quickly that its processors couldn't even process the movement as having occurred.
"Klat sdrawkcab, od uoy?"
The words had come slowly and with immense difficulty on Kon's part, but once the velix processed them, its eyes widened in surprise. No one had ever understood it before. Taking the velix's apparent shock as the answer to his question, Kon squawked in triumph and began to trot around the room at a rapid speed.

The boy, who had been watching curiously from the side, now jumped up from his seated position on the floor.
"You understand him!?"
Kon squawked again in glee. The boy's eyes widened in wonder.
"You're awesome!"
Kon screeched to a halt in front of the boy.
"He's not speaking another language, he's just talking backwards!"
"Backwards?"
"Backwards!"
The velix continued to stand in shock.
