Blind Date: Raiden x Nanyanirnë

Raiden
(Location is Lamenolai)

Raiden strolled in through the busy city gates, hands in his pockets, not a concern in the world. Anyone paying attention might notice the occasional woman who'd turn to glance at him. Today, though, he didn't return their looks. He was supposed to meet someone for a blind date, apparently, and it would be terrible of him to show up surrounded by a gaggle of women. Some women, in his experience didn't mind, but others could be shy, self-conscious, or jealous types who might not handle it well. Last thing Raiden wanted was to start the date off on a sour note.

Somewhat awkwardly, Raiden ducked into an alley when he saw a particular group of women up ahead. They'd heard him sing at the pub his sister'd dragged him off to the other night and had instantly become part of his apparent fan club. (Until that night, he was unaware he even had a fan club.) Fan girls of his were a definite no-no for a first meeting, much less a date. Hopefully they wouldn't bother him later - pretty much every woman left him alone when he was focused on a specific individual. He never did quite understand why, some kind of unspoken rule among females?

He suddenly stopped when he realized he'd gotten lost in his thoughts. Turning, he looked around quickly to make sure he hadn't walked past his destination. Ah! Just another block up was the little coffee shop with the bright red awning. It was quite easy to recognize, so it made for a good meeting place. Hopefully, Isabel had made sure the other party knew where to meet. Walking over to the patio fence, he leaned against it casually and looked around. In a white button shirt slightly open at the collar and with reddish-orange hair, Raiden would be pretty easy to pick out from the other pedestrians. Unfortunately, Isabel had failed to ask how he'd recognize his date. Well, hopefully she'd find him.
You can pretend that when you hear my voice, darling, it's your choice not to fall in.

But it's all an act, 'cause I know exactly what you're wanting. You know it's what I'm wanting

Boy I know what you desire, oh, you're such a bad, bad liar

This could be perfection, or venom dripping in your mouth

Singing like a Siren, love me while your wrists are bound

Nanyanirnë.  Human form.

While she was not as lost and confused as the first time she'd ventured out into Lamenolai, Nanyanirnë was still looking around and trying to make sure that she hadn't accidentally missed her destination.  After leaving the protection of the Magic Department of Lamenolai, she'd tried to stick to wearing plain street clothes, but the Circle mage within her couldn't forgo her robes for too long.

And so, today, she was wearing exactly that: her old Circle robes, which were varying shades of purple, and trimmed with a greyish-white fur.  Grand Enchanter Fiona had once complimented the style of her robes, and while they had once felt more like the trappings of a prisoner, now, they were a proud reminder of her station.

Walking into the coffee shop, Nanyanirnë looked around for a man wearing a white button-up shirt and reddish-orange hair that she was told would be waiting for her.  When she found him, she began to make her way over towards him.

"Raiden?" she asked.
Maybe I'm foolish, maybe I'm blind
Thinking I can see through this to see what's behind
Got no way to prove it, so maybe I'm lying
Take a look in the mirror, what do you see
Can you see it clearer, or are you deceived in what you believe?
Don't ask my opinion, don't ask me to lie
Then beg for forgiveness for making you cry
'cause I'm no prophet or Messiah
You should go looking somewhere higher

I'm only human, I make mistakes
I'm only human, I do what I can
I'm only human, that's all it takes to put the blame on me

Don't put the blame on me

Raiden heard his name and turned to the voice. There he saw a woman wearing purple robes. Had he known to look for it, she wouldn't have been too difficult to find, he thought. He smiled easily and stepped forward to meet her.
"You must be...Nanyanirnë?" he paused with a slight frown. "I hope I pronounced that right."  His voice was not too quiet but somehow managed to seem silky and soft - pleasant to the ear. At the same time, though he was not speaking loudly, the voice seemed to demand attention and hung in the air seconds after he finished speaking.

A woman nearby jerked her head around to look at him with wide eyes, only to quickly divert her gaze in embarrassment when she realized she was staring at a stranger. Raiden honestly didn't notice, such a reaction was normal in his experience and he'd learned to block it out years ago. Instead he smoothly gestured to an open table at the back.
"Would you like to sit, since we're already here?" with a pause, he amended, "Or we could go elsewhere, if coffee is not your thing."
He looked at her with a smile that showed he was comfortable with whichever decision she might make.

Nanyanirnë offered a smile as she nodded.  "If you prefer, you can call me Yani.  My other friends back home always did, for... as long as I can remember," she said.  His voice was certainly something like Yani had never heard before--no, that wasn't entirely accurate.  She'd heard a similar voice during her Harrowing when a Desire demon had tried to tempt her.  But, Evelon was not Thedas--there had to be some other reason his voice sounded so appealing.

"Coffee is fine," Yani said.  In truth, she was still relatively uncertain as to what this "coffee" was; her drinks of choice were usually more akin to cocoa.  Perhaps she would try some here and see what it tasted like--perhaps she could get some coffee added to her typical cocoa flavor.

"Well then, Miss Yani, shall we?"
Smiling easily, Raiden gestured for Yani to sit and eased himself into the opposite seat. After so many years of dealing with people swarming around him and his sister, he liked to think he was good at reading people. Yet, when she'd heard his voice, she didn't react quite like people usually do. Not that he could say how she'd reacted, exactly, but despite her smile, he got the vibe that his voice had perhaps unsettled her a bit? Well, regardless, he wanted her to enjoy her time with him.

The waitress, clearly recognizing Raiden, could not wait to take their order. At least, it appeared that way as she practically bounded up to ask what the two of them were having. She politely looked at both of them, but her eyes were obviously drawn to him. As for Raiden, though, he kept his eyes on Yani.
"Two coffees, please," he said to the waitress, almost adding her name, but deciding that might be too much. As she skittered off, Raiden leaned lightly on the table, his focus entirely on Yani.
"So, you said your friends 'back home'? I take it, then, you're not from here?" he asked politely. His tone was undemanding and sociable but he expressed his legitimate interest in the subject through his body language. He hated making others feel obliged to answer just because of the tone of his voice.

Nanyanirnë slid into the seat that Raiden indicated, watching as he seated himself on the opposite side of the table.  She couldn't help but notice how eager the waitress seemed, and it made her a little uneasy at first.  She masked this unease behind a mask of confidence, however, and kept her eyes on Raiden as he ordered for the both of them.  When he asked where she was from, guessing that she was not from there, she offered a nod and a small smile.

"No, I'm not native to Evelon," she said, pushing her hair behind her ears.  "I'm from a world known as Thedas.  I've been in Evelon for... well over a year, now, if I recall correctly," she said.

Raiden raised his eyebrows in interest at Yani's answer. "Thedas, huh? Can't say I've heard of it," he replied honestly. "Welcome to Evelon, belated as it is. What do you think of it so far?" he asked.

Before Yani would have a chance to answer, the waitress returned with their coffees. Given that there were other patrons in the shop, she must've prioritized their order. This didn't escape Raiden as he finally broke eye contact with Yani to give the girl a brief disapproving frown. This did not faze her at all as she smiled and slid their drinks in front of them.
"Here you go Miss, Raiden," she chirped. She was so eager for his attention, it'd be terribly rude of him to ignore it. With an internal sigh that he didn't dare reflect on his face, he smiled down at his drink. "Thanks, Molly," he said in a friendly way.

He then turned back to Yani, but hesitated when he saw that the waitress was lingering. Glancing up, he noticed her looking around furtively.
"She's not here," he said simply. Visibly disappointed, the girl left. Finally, Raiden was able to turn his full gaze back to his date. "Sorry about that, Molly also works at a nightclub my sister frequents," he explained meekly.

"There aren't a whole lot of people who have heard of Thedas," Yani said.  "I personally know of only one other person that's been torn, in a manner of speaking, from Thedas--and she was torn from it quite some time before I was," she said.

She watched the waitress with a slightly curious glance, noticing her... peculiar behavior.  She had to admit, Raiden's voice was certainly captivating and enchanting, but it still made her a little nervous--a fact she was still trying her best to camouflage without being obvious about it.

"Ah, I see," Yani said in regards to the waitress.  "As for how I'm finding Evelon... well, to be truthful, I like it a little more than Thedas," she said.  "In Thedas, my kind and I were... often confined out of fear, because of how certain things work there," she said, letting a small flame dance between her fingers as she lifted her hand.  The flame was gone shortly after; if there was one thing she learned, it was that flashy displays of her talent were ill advised.

Raiden had again picked up that there was something off about Yani's reaction when he spoke. It was well camouflaged now - he almost missed it. Almost. For a moment, he considered whether it'd be appropriate to bring up the subject of his power. He didn't want to make her feel awkward.

The thought dissipated as he listened to her talk about her homeworld. He zeroed in on the phrase 'my kind' and looked at Yani quizzically just as she gave a little display of her power. Raiden's eyebrows raised in interest. So she had some kind of fire power. He didn't know why she had that power - he knew of many people who had similar gifts for a variety of reasons. Elementals, mages, witches, cursed, weird-random-circumstance-people, you get the idea.
"I'm sorry you experienced that," he said, genuinely meaning it. "As I'm sure you've noticed, Evelon's full of folk with...unusual gifts." He hadn't meant to include himself in that category, but gestured to his mouth/throat area as an afterthought. He smiled.

"It was just... part of that world," Yani said.  "If you were born a mage, as I was, you were feared and hated.  It's part of how magic works in our world as to why we were feared; in our world, where magic comes from is also closely tied to both spirits and demons--with demons often being the ones that would get drawn into our world and wreaking havoc," she said.

When he gestured to his mouth and throat after saying that Evelon was full of folk with unusual gifts, Yani's head inclined slightly.  "I've noticed more than a few people in Evelon with other... unique gifts," she said.  "The greatest comfort has been being able to walk about town in my enchanter's robes, with my head held high, and to not be looked upon with scorn--knowing, too, that there are others with the same gifts I have."
