Artificial Hearts [P]

The towering expanse of the city promised many things but delivered on very few. The one thing it could provide was a safe place to hide - so long as your definition of 'safe' was a loose one. Hiding in plain sight was a young woman in a school uniform with the logo of a local university on the front. She had the body of an adult, but not the mannerisms of one. She would surely be kicked out of any reputable bar, anyway.

Psht... this one, here. A voice crackled over the small transmitter in her ear.

Fluorine froze still like a child having been caught with a hand in the cookie jar. She looked over at the building there and nodded. As nonchalantly as she could, she wandered over to the large glass doors. They opened for her as she approached and she nodded as if to thank them. How polite!

Inside, the people were far too busy to mind a lost looking girl. She was able to wandered unnoticed all the way to an elevator. She really didn't like elevators; they made her head feel funny. Nonetheless she pressed the button and waited patiently as the light clicked down to her floor. The elevator also received a nod of thanks as she stepped inside and hit the button at the very bottom: R for rooftop. Of course the elevator didn't go all the way to the rooftop; instead it sent her out in front of a flight of stairs.

Fluorine looked content and not at all worried as she stepped out onto the roof of the building. The wind up there sent her hair and skirt into a frenzy, but she didn't seem to mind. She calmly walked up to the three men in long black coats and smiled.

"This is what she sent us?" one growled. "How pathetic."

"I do not think you should insult me," Fluorine said, loudly enough to be heard over the wind and traffic below.

"Just give us the goods," he insisted impatiently.

Fluorine gently removed an envelope from the breast pocket of her blazer and held it out at arms length. The mysterious man grinned and quickly ripped it away from her. With his prize in hand, he silently stomped away. A grin formed on the faces of the other two. Each of them grabbed one of the girl's arms, and before she could react, tossed her over the side of the building.

The girl went hurtling toward the ground at an alarming speed. Something was being said through her transmitter, but she couldn't hear it over the pounding of her heart and the whipping of the wind. Before she could say anything, she crashed into the concrete below, leaving a huge dent in the sidewalk.

Psht... Fl... Psht. Pop!

"Uuuaugh."

Hiding in plain sight had been something he'd learned to do in a quick span of time, and perfected over even more time. But the nature of that hiding-- where, how-- was completely from what he was doing now just to keep from being found again. With his mind under someone else's boot, it had been... much easier. Now? He was on his own, no orders to tell him where to go, what to do or how, and there was no headquarters for him to dash back to when the job was done-- there was no job. No goal. What was he even doing? Why was he trying so hard to hide, perservere?

The Winter Soldier-- as was the only identity he had for himself-- peered about the city as he made his way along the pavement. Now wasn't the time to have yet another existential crisis. There was never a good time, and he would have very much liked it if he could stop having them altogether. There were groceries to get, necessities, and a high risk of being recognised by authorities hidden amongst the crowds. At least he wasn't dressed in his uniform any more, instead wearing jeans, work boots, a hoodie over a long sleeved shirt, and a hat. So long as no one questioned his gloves...

Little mind was paid as a young woman in a school uniform passed by. The only concern the Soldier had was the possibility of her paying mind to him. At first, he was able to brush the worry away, but then-- she stopped in her tracks, and headed towards a specific building with a nod of her head. All the sirens in the Soldier's head flared off. Without a mask, the growing panic was evident in his eyes. A straight face wasn't a strong suit of his, and now, there was a chance that alone would give him away.

But he kept his composure, and continued on his way at a slimly more brisk pace. Running would only make matters worse-- but he had to get away if his suspicions were correct. No one else seemed to be acting off kilter, but that was hardly a relief; the point of blending in was to blend in entirely, as good agents were experts at.

The Soldier's path would go past the building, and he almost made it halfway beyond its width before he was halted by a sudden outburst of screaming. His head swivelled to see what caused the commotion--

CRACK.

It was only a few feet away, the person who'd plummeted to the sidewalk from off the building's rooftop. Last he checked, people were meant to break before concrete, not the other way around. ... Something was wrong, here. This was no ordinary person, agent or otherwise.

What was worse, was that the person was still alive. He wasn't sure how to feel about that.

Plenty of people were already making their way to crowd around the unfortunate stranger, he didn't need to be one of them. So he hung back, keeping an eye on the situation while keeping his distance. His neck craned to look up at the roof of the building she'd fallen off of. If this was unrelated to him... what was going on?
when that light goes out this eve,
some will run, and some will grieve.

if you have a reason, or if you believe,
in darkness we trust.

the whores and gentlemen, they lead,
trails of insecurities.

i am not a watchman, i do as i please.

in darkness i trust.

The girl in the (now torn) school uniform slowly sat up. At least she was capable of that. She rubbed her face with her palms, trying to knock some sense into herself. Everything looked blurry and sounded like static on a poorly broadcast radio station. Even in her daze she knew that she couldn't stay here for long. Falling off a building onto concrete was exactly the sort of thing that drew a lot of attention. Attention she wanted to avoid.

Psht. Pop! Crackle. Flo... Psht.

Fluorine tapped on her head like she was trying to knock something back into place, but she knew there was no time to mess around. She wasn't safe here. Not with all of the people around. For that matter, they had really started to form a crowd, hadn't they? She felt nothing but panic as a well meaning woman asked her if she was okay.

"I'm okay! I'm fine!" she insisted, though the panicked tone in her voice and the blood dripping down her face suggested otherwise.

"I need. ... I need. To go." Fluorine jumped to her feet with surprising grace, considering her position, and darted through the crowd. She shoved her way through, pushing away anyone in her path. Most of them simply stood stunned, not putting up a fight against the odd girl.

She ran as fast and hard as she could toward the nearest dark place. Somewhere it would be safe to hide as she assessed the situation. She used her cardigan to wipe the blood from her eyes, and when she up she saw the perfect place to duck and hide. A quick glance behind her suggested that she wasn't being followed, at least not closely. A typical human would be hard pressed to catch up with someone as quick as her.

"Please," she whispered, tapping her head again. "I can't hear anything you're saying. Can you hear me? I need an extraction."
