Apple wandered the streets, marveling at how the stone walls had been fitted together. The enormous blocks connected without the use of any mortar, and she could barely pick out the seams where two blocks met. It was indeed a strong defense. The little disease kuhna doubted that the Imperials could breach these walls and take the city.
In fact, a feeling of busy welcoming pervaded the streets. Merchants large and small had set up stands in the crowded day market, selling pies, cakes, fruits, rugs, gems, jewelry, scribe services, and of course, weapons of all shapes and sizes. Among the steel-bedecked stalls Apple even spotted a few potion tables. The people and pets at the stalls shouted their wares to the passerby, exclaiming over how much finer their goods were than anyone else's.
But despite the initially welcoming atmosphere, she noticed subtle warning signs that screamed "War!" The guards at the gates held their shiny swords and muskets in a firm grasp, their eyes sporting bags that told of sleepless nights and exhausting days. There were more than a few stores and houses that wore a white flag with a red cross over their door, indicating a medical building or place for the soldiers to rest a night or two. Many people walking the allies farther from the center of town carried small defensive knives or eye-burning spray in case an operative of the opposing army snuck into their home.
Apple sighed and sat on a bench near the central square. She had brought a few keystones with her, just enough to buy a pie and perhaps a small trinket to commemorate her stay. The sun beat down on her slick black fur, throwing small highlights into it. Turning to look at the stone guardian above her, she shuddered. This place had stories that no one would want to know- and secrets that everyone was looking for. A shadow was cast over the marketplace as a cloud covered the sun for a moment; more than one person looked up to see what the matter was. Having satisfied their curiosity and assuring themselves that the Imperials hadn't sent a wave of airborne-attackers, they went back to their businesses. Apple shivered harder, the tremor passing from the tip of her nose to the ends of her toes. Something lurked inside the city, hiding, and only the stone figures knew where it was...
Thoroughly creeped out the little disease kuhna slunk away from the bench and made her way to a stall that sold sweets to browse their colorful wares.
