All was quiet. The street was completely empty. It was about noon and exactly a week from Halloween, so it wasn't as if anything strange was likely to happen. Maybe a lost traveler or something, but certainly not--
"Trick or tree-eet!"
A girl with bright red braids ran down the street, purple cape flying out behind her, an empty purple pillowcase swinging from one hand. She stopped at the corner, giggling and bouncing. She behaved remarkably like a six-year-old for someone twice that age. Perhaps that was her Halloween costume, and she was practicing? "Ares, hurry u-up! I want to get started!"
"I'm coming, Lakhi. Be patient. What are you, five?" A man with a guitar hanging over his shoulder approached, grinning despite his harsh words. Ares was of the opinion that he was too lenient with his pseudo-sister, but Halloween was her favorite holiday, so he figured she deserved a little indulgence.
"Come o-on!" Lakhi bounced impatiently, then took off up the steps of the nearest house. Ares followed, smiling as she banged on the door and yelled, "Trick or treat!"
