Smelling of Roses [Self][Finished]

Ren grinned as he signed the last sheet of the purchase contract. He had finally found the perfect place to re-open his florists, on a side street just off the main city avenues. He shook the hand of the lawyer, and took his copy of the purchase deed, sighing with happiness.

The new shop was spacious, and would do very well as a shop and a home for them. Ren had fallen in love with it the moment he had laid eyes on it, and had been determined to purchase it - thankfully, the sale of their old place had more than covered the cost of the new one.

Ren watched the lawyer leave, and hugged himself with glee. The shop would need some work done before they could open it, but the top floor had been sold to him fully furnished and would enable them to move in immediately. He sighed contentedly, before picking up his satchel and making his way onto the street, pausing to lock the door behind him.

He considered hiring a contractor to do the job for him, but the idea was out of his mind almost before he could think of it. After all, his sons were capable and skilled, and he himself was willing to devote his energies to renovation... it would be the perfect family project.

Ren passed the contractors' building whistling, and turned off a crowded lane onto a quieter side street where the stables were. He thanked the groom for handling his horse well, and saddled up to leave.

On his way back to their sleepy little village, Ren began planning. They would need to hire a horse and cart to move their possessions, but that shouldn't be a problem as long as the local squire was reasonable. They would need to move quickly - their old house needed to be empty within the month - but now that the sale had been finalised, there would be no more delays.

He stopped in to enquire after the horse and cart, and was greeted warmly by the squire who assured him it would be no trouble, provided he had the funds to pay for the journey. Ren had only grinned at that; he knew that nobody understood how a meagre florists' livelihood could make any money. Little did they know that it was all down to knowing the right flower for the right customer.

He left the squire with arrangements for the horse and cart to be delivered to his house at noon the next day, and proceeded homeward to tell his sons the news. He hoped they would like the new shop as much as he did, and it would provide them with more opportunities than they had in their small, sleepy village.

"We're moving tomorrow!" cried Viram, eldest of the triplets and second son in the household. "Have you lost your mind, father? How can we possibly have everything packed up and ready by tomorrow!" he shouted. It wasn't that he was perturbed by the move, as Ren had been open about the sale of their home and his plans to move to the city; he hadn't expected it to be so sudden however, and although Ren was prone to impulsive decisions he would at least have thought his father would show them the new house before buying it.

Ren smiled widely; he couldn't wait for the boys to see their new home, and refused to worry about the small things. "We'll be fine; I packed up the shop itself when we sold the house, and everything is ready to be loaded onto the cart tomorrow; the squire's lending us his two largest ones, with the four horses each, so everything should fit just fine. We simply need to pack up the house contents, and dismantle the furniture to take it with us."

Viram stared at his father in dismay; clearly he had his mind set on moving out on the morrow, and would not be dissuaded. "Fine, but that means we're not sleeping tonight" he grumbled, as he went to begin packing the contents of his room. He hadn't even said goodbye to- well, it wouldn't matter now, would it, since the whole village would know about it in the morning; he just hoped he would see her before they left.

He sighed as he entered his room for what he supposed would be one of the last times, and grumbled, before opening his trunk and beginning to pack his clothes. His father could at least have given them a full day to pack, instead of just springing it on them like this.

Caram, Corthrim and Yuram.

They finished packing just as the carts rolled up, and Ren greeted them keenly whilst the drivers helped them load their belongings. As a final act, he went through each of the rooms to check that nothing had been forgotten, before locking the front door for the last time.

Viram and Caram opted to ride in the back of the second cart, stating that they would sleep during the journey - a trip which would last until the late afternoon, according to the drivers. Ren had scoffed at that, stating that he had ridden the trip in just a few hours, but the drivers insisted and so it would be.

The boys' steeds (as they each had their own) had been assigned to the carts, two on each, thereby to ease the strain on the carthorses (and to ensure they did not attempt to bolt during the journey); Corthrim and Yuram each sat by the driver on one of the carts, whilst Ren rode his own Cavallion colt at the head of the party.

By the time the carts reached the city, the sun was sitting low in the sky and Ren was beginning to think about what they would do for dinner. By this point, only himself and Corthrim were awake, Yuram having joined his brothers when they stopped to give the cavallion water.

"We could go to a restaurant" suggested Corthrim quietly, reading Ren's thoughts; "there seems to be a nice, quiet little one over there by the post office."

Ren smiled; his adopted son usually possessed a level head and his suggestion this time was both sensible and welcome. "Very well" he said with a smile; "wake your brothers. We'll get everything inside then go eat, and we'll sort it all out tomorrow."

The brothers were eager to eat, and soon had everything stored inside whilst Ren helped the drivers unhitch their cavallion, and tipped them before they went on their way.

"Come on," he said, indicating the stables; "let's get the cavallion tucked away before we eat." They paid for the stable, and soon their steeds were munching on fresh hay with their blankets on.

After dinner, they returned to a new problem; the beds had not been set up yet, nor the rooms allotted; it took Corthrim three attempts to get his squabbling siblings to listen to his idea of lumping bedding on the floor for the night, and Viram and Caram vehemently opposed the idea.

Yuram, on the other hand, went to his belongings and unpacked his bedding quietly, following Corthrim's idea; he was asleep before his brothers noticed, and Ren was proud of his youngest son.

The next morning, Ren awoke feeling exuberant; he couldn't wait to get started on the renovations. Thankfully the top floor - what was to become their new house - required no work, so he was able to wash himself and dress, before slipping out to buy breakfast.

Caram was the next to awake, somewhat less excited than his father; the smell of frying bacon and eggs, however, proved to be a powerful motivator, and Viram and Yuram soon followed him. Only Corthrim continued to slumber, peacefully unaware of the argument that was taking place over the bathroom upstairs.

Ren grinned; it was beginning to feel like home already, he mused, as he portioned out the breakfast and went downstairs to wake his eldest before the triplets ate his share.

After breakfast, the rooms were allotted; Ren, of course, would have the master bedroom with the en-suite bathroom which overlooked the street their shop faced onto. Corthrim, ever sensible, chose the large room at the back of the house; farthest away from both stairs and shared bathroom, it was the closest to the small stairway which led to the roof terrace, and he could imagine spending many afternoons up there content in his own company.

Viram and Caram tossed a Key Stone to decide which of the (slightly smaller) rooms they would have, with Viram winning the one by the bathroom and Caram receiving the one beside the living room. Yuram, the youngest, was content with what was left - the smallest room (which was still bigger than his old one) happened to be right beside the kitchen, and he would be the first at the table from now on.

With the rooms settled, the family began moving their belongings up into their apartment - with lots of grunting and complaining, once the boys realised everything would need to be moved up two flights of stairs to the third floor!

Within three days, they had finished the top floor and had moved on to organising the second; they had agreed that this would be the storeroom and greenhouse area, as it would provide warmth to the house during the winter (and nobody wanted to drag stock up to the third floor). Ren had also surveyed the roof terrace, and had plans to build a small greenhouse and turn it into a usable garden - he hoped Corthrim would help him, as he had no doubt the boy intended to spend his time there.

Viram and Caram set to work painting the rooms and varnishing the floors; once they were done, they would all work together building shelves, stands, and specialised water bed systems which would nourish the plants as they grew. In the meantime, Yuram went through the inventory with his father, noting down where each item would go, and Corthrim took charge of organising the actual placement of items. This floor would take them longer, but eventually they were all happy with it and they were ready for their final challenge.

"I don't understand why you didn't do all of this before we moved in" grouched Viram, once again down on his knees sanding the new floor they had put in. "It would have been much easier," Ren agreed, "were it not for the necessity of selling the old house in order to buy this one." His son continued grumbling under his breath, whilst Yuram called out "Ignore him, father; he's just upset because he fell out of bed this morning and landed in hard work."

Corthrim stifled a chuckle at the glare Viram sent his (marginally) younger brother, and Caram chuckled as he continued hammering the new shelves up onto the wall. The whole downstairs floor would be their shop, with shelves and displays organised in order to make full use of the available room.

And what a shop it would be, if Ren's vision came to fruition! He paused his work for a moment, smiling happily as his sons continued to create the masterpiece he had designed. His life was made of two things; his sons, and his work, and here they would come together.

"Watch it there!" he called out, as Viram and Caram failed to notice the shelf they were carrying almost knocked Yuram off his ladder. Corthrim steadied it with a foot just in time, and the boys wasted no time sheepishly apologising both to their father and their brother.

Eventually, the shop renovations were complete, and the family stood back to admire their handiwork. The flowers would be arriving over the course of the next few days - Ren had had to completely clear his stock for the move, and would be starting from scratch.

Viram, Caram and Yuram were busy squabbling in a corner, arguing who had built the best shelves. Meanwhile, Corthrim stood beside his father admiring the finished store arrangement. He sighed, as he thought about the news he had yet to tell his father.
