Return to Lamenolai, City of the Guardians

Who am I? [Chap. 2] ((FIN))

Kenta (Rabbits are Gema and Herb)

Finally getting out of the dratted Tengel Rainforest, the boy ran along the ground, stopping only to stare at the city ahead of them. Actually, he could not stare at the city, for his clear, silver eyes saw nothing. Instead, he saw through the eyes of the rabbit on his shoulder. "Herb, what is that?" he whispered as they drew closer to a road leading into the busy streets.
"How the 'eck should we know? We ain't been anywhere you haven't!" The other rabbit, Gema, cut in with her thought before Herb could think a reply. Feeling Herb's irritation, Kenta mentally encouraged Herb to ignore her and respond.
"Like Gema blurted in there, we've never been anywhere. We woke up not long before you did. Though it is true that we seem to have an odd kind of instinct for knowing these things. Right now that instinct's telling me that this place is called Lamenolai. A city obviously..."
"Really? My instinct-or-what'chever-call-it says it's the City of the Guardians. So HAH, you're WRONG, 'ya littl-..."
"It doesn't mean he's wrong Gema. The name could be Lamenolai, City of the Guardians..." Quickly, Kenta fell silent as they passed through the gates, and stumbled around, truly blind as Herb was knocked off his shoulder; the trio being dragged into the city with the bustling crowd. Managing to guide the boy to the side of the street, Gema struggled to stay on Kenta's other shoulder and hold onto Herb as well.
You can pretend that when you hear my voice, darling, it's your choice not to fall in.

But it's all an act, 'cause I know exactly what you're wanting. You know it's what I'm wanting

Boy I know what you desire, oh, you're such a bad, bad liar

This could be perfection, or venom dripping in your mouth

Singing like a Siren, love me while your wrists are bound

Standing to the side of the crowd, Kenta waited patiently for Herb to climb back up to his shoulder. Doing so the rabbit quickly reconnected his vision to Kenta's mind.
"We're going to have to learn how to do this without you being on my shoulder the whole time." Kenta murmured as he turned down an alley to avoid the surge of people. With the help of his spirits, he climbed a building to stand on the roof. "Maybe here we will find out who we are and who 'Jaden' and 'Injry' are. It looks like there's too many people out to go around asking, so why don't we try this connection of ours?"
"Connection? I ain't scurring down there. I'd get squished or killed or worse."
"There's something worse than getting killed or squished?"
"Ya, you could get ea-"
"Okay, cut it out you two. Gema, nothing's going to happen to you. Now both of you, get out there. I'll being staying right here." As if I could get down alive anyway.
"We heard that."
Shooing the two away, Kenta sat down and watched the two different views speed past his eyes, mentally giving instructions to his rabbits.

Herb darted along the street, jumping from canopy to canopy, ignoring the annoyed shouts from merchants beneath them. There's nothing here. Did we really come to the right place? He thought to himself as he stopped occasionally to sweep the sea of people beside him.

Gema made small grumbling noises as she threaded through the mass of people. Occasionally she squeaked as her tail was stepped on or someone tripped over her. I'ma gunna be bruised tommorow. She definitely wasn't pleased, biting the nose of a large and stupid sheilupe that thought she was food.

Poor Kenta. The boy's attention was now focused completely on Gema, ignoring Herb. The small, nervous rabbit was now surrounded by some angry creatures of various species. There was even a human there as well. Pressing her back to the wall, she cursed Kenta and Herb, shouting strings of terrified ramble into her companions' minds. Among those thoughts were clear whines of 'I told you so!'. These thoughts were cut off occasionally as she flinched away from a sheilupe's snapping jaws. Yes, the same Sheilupe she bit earlier. Thank goodness for the rope holding him to a lamp pole.

Herb was frantic, pacing a canopy and ignoring the chimes of stained glass art hiting each other below him. Occasionally, a crash was heard as a peice of art fell from underneath the canopy, followed by a series of curse words from the poor merchant selling them. Not that Herb noticed, he was too busy listening to Gema's rampant thoughts. Unlike Kenta, he could not see through his sister's eyes, but he could obviously hear her; they had to talk somehow.

Kenta sent soothing thoughts to Gema, trying his best to calm her. She was so determined to prove him wrong, wasn't she? He did tell her to stick to the canopies like her brother, but she insisted on the ground. Stick to the sides of the street then, he told her, but no, she wasn't going to do that.
"Gema, you're small, look for a gap in people. A crack in the wall, even a drain..."
"Ya want me ta git in a ruddy sewer!? Gross, no way. I'd rather take m' chances."
"Gema, Gema, PLEASE. Just get out of there! Please!" Herb's mind-voice broke in, thick with worry. He was met with a wave of disgust and rebelliousness as she considered the option. Well, another 'no'. Kenta sighed. They couldn't do anything except have her run away. How did she manage to get herself into this situation? Maybe it was that cabbage cart she knocked over...

Just as Gema thought the sheilupe was going to break the rope holding it, a man came along and started yelling at it, obivouisly the owner. Untying the rope, the man dragged the angry beast down the street and out of sight. Using the gap left by the dog-like creature, Gema shot towards the nearest canopy, leaping onto the tarp. Sticking her tounge out at the angry gathering below, she darted down the street, still ignoring the flow of words coming from her brother and Kenta.

Relieved to see this, Kenta relaxed and laid back, feeling the sun come out from behind a cloud to caress his face. He smiled as he heard Herb attempting to scold his sister, knowing that it was a lost effort.
"Relax, Herb. She's safe. She's not listening to you anyway, you know."
After a moment of hesitation, Herb resigned and continued his own search. All three wondered if there was truly any clues here about the all-mysterious Jaden.

Soon, the crowd began to disperse as the vendors packed up their few remaining wares.
"Must've been a market day." Herb thought to the two, and Kenta asked what a market day was. Herb admitted to not knowing, but somehow still knew that it was some sort of day when merchants gathered and sold their wares in one place. It often brought a number of people from outside the city, in. Understanding now, Kenta agreed. Then he perked up as a black shape shot across the ground and merged with a solid wall.
"What was that?" he pratically shouted into Gema's head. Reeling, Gema growled in response. Recovering a bit, she jumped down and examined the wall.

Paws pressed up to the wall, Gema laid her head on it, listening for sounds within. Hearing a strange hissing sound and a gurgling snarl, she jumped back. Hearing it through her mind, Kenta and Herb gave a start of surprise.
"Wha' was that? I dun wanna be here, Kenta. I think's even more dangerous than th'dumb sheilupe earlier." Gema whined, ears flicking around nervously. Kenta mentally rolled his eyes and asked her if she was scared. In response, he recieved an irritated silence and laughed.

Running along the nearly empty street now, Herb looked at the sun starting to dissapear behind the buidlings.
"It'll be nightime soon, Kenta. We should hurry."
"I agree. I don't want to be stuck up here."
Finally making it to Gema, Herb paused to let Kenta adjust to the double vision of rabbits. Then, he ran a paw down a crack in the wall; far too thin for anything normal, except a bug, to fit through. Suddenly he felt something slap his paw and automatically recoiled from it. Looking at his paw, he saw a dark black line down the middle of it. Hearing Gema and Kenta's mind voices assaulting his mind with questions, he chose to ignore them and put his eye up to the crack curiously. He swore something moved, but there was nothing in there, the crack wasn't very deep. Again, something lashed out at him, a long black whip-like thing, but he moved away in time.
"You see that, Kenta? What is it?" he asked, but the boy wasn't paying attention.
"Go up to the wall again, I thought I heard something." Hesitantly obeying, Gema crept up to the wall and placed her ear against it. There! A voice.
"Get lost, filthy Light creatures. Jaden can't protect you forever." The voice whispered in another language. The same language as the garudor in the Rainforest, the language Kenta could understand though others simply thought it was wind.
"That name again. Jaden. This time it said something about Light creatures. What are they? It thinks we're whatever they are?"
"Disgusting creatures. Filthy. Live in day, happy in sunlight, scared in dark. Just wish they'd all dissapear!" Sensing the rising anger and malice in the voice, Kenta told the two to get away quickly. It was dangerous there.

Kenta called the two rabbits back to him reluctantly, recognizing the tone of sunset appearing on the images he received from both Gema and Herb. Still on edge from the strange thing in the wall, the rabbits eagerly replied, wasting no time in returning to their master. Reaching him, Herb dutifully leaped onto his shoulder, taking the position necessary to be Kenta's eyes. At the same time, Gema disconnected her eyes so that Kenta could have a rest from the double vision. She scampered up his cloak, perching herself onto his other shoulder.
I don't want to be stuck here overnight...
Why da 'eck not?
Because these walls are kinda intimidating, that's why!
Intimidat'n? I'll show you intimidat'n, you soppy, sod-hoppin' little-
Okay, knock it off, Gema. He's right. Kenta sighed as he climbed back down to street level cautiously, as it was more difficult for Herb to look down at where Kenta was stepping without falling.

Making it down to the street, the three noticed it wasn't as busy as before.
Strange...it seems that these...cities...are mostly busy during the day. I wonder why. His companions did not seem to understand either, or rather, in Gema's case, did not seem to care. Hearing a clanking, Herb turned to look at the city gate behind them slowly closing as people rushed through. With a silent shout to Kenta, the rabbit tugged on the boy's hair. It was unnecessary, however, as the boy had spun about the moment Herb had seen the gate in the first place. It was all Herb could do to keep his eyes on the gate for Kenta, as he bounced up and down, barely clinging to the fabric of the cloak. On the other shoulder, Gema faced a similar situation as she buried herself in the fabric so as not to be blown away. Together, they safely made it through the gate as it shut with a loud clang behind them. Not even having Herb look back, Kenta kept running for the river in the distance, hoping that that might take them to another location that they could search for more clues about who Kenta was and what he was supposed to do.
