The slums are a rundown, old heap of a town tucked deep in the jungles, with townsfolk consisting mostly of poachers, black marketeers, thieves, and fugitives. While the ideal tourist spot, some travel to the Slums to make use of the black markets. (+2 Defense, +2 Speed)

Defective AI (Self | Quest)

Postby Sarah » 11/12/2016 5:41 PM

Zeveroux sat in his workshop with his head in his hands. On his workbench sat a short circuiting Maus. He’d only been working on the thing for months, and when he finally thought he’d replaced the malfunctioning parts, the little thing went and fried itself again. He was convinced it was the AI, someone had crafted the thing to always malfunction. Unfortunately, there was no way to replace Maus AI.

Another Maus was sitting at the end of the table. Its little head tilting from side to side as it watched Zeveroux work. It was one of the original models, and it had an undying curiosity.

“How many times do I have to tell you, stay away from this one,” Zeveroux said. There was no telling what damage the malfunctioning AI could do to other Maus. Zevsreoux was quite fond of the original model, and it was a great basis for creating more, so it would be a shame to lose the little thing.

The malfunctioning Maus teetered around a bit, but with a cracked screen and a smoking hot core there as little it could do. “If you’d just let me fix you…” Zeveroux gave an exasperated sigh. “It seems like you two will be here for a while. It’ll be more convenient if I give you names,” he said suddenly. He looked over at the functioning Maus, “Do you have names?” he asked.

The screen on the Maus’s face flashed the letters “M-u”.

“And that one?” he asked.

The letters “R-h-o” flashed on the screen.

After months of almost no progress Zeveroux managed to feel a little good about the situation. If nothing else, he had something to call them. Why hadn’t he thought about that earlier? Oh yeah, because most of the Maus he made just went out to someone else. While Mu wasn’t technically his, the little thing did contain all his blueprints and important information in order to run his business.

Suddenly he heard the door jingle in his front room. Who the heck was visiting him? With some hesitation Zeveroux got up and went out to greet his customer. “Oh!” he said surprised. “Malek, what are you doing here?” he asked.

“Just wanted to see how that project is going?” Malek said.

He had his usual dark tone and malicious gaze. It sent shivers down Zeveroux spine despite how long he’d worked for the man.

“Not well,” Zeveroux admitted. “Well... By that I mean that the Maus you sent me is completely unrepairable. The AI seems to be set to always destroy itself,” he explained.

“I wouldn’t call that a failure,” Malek said. “Now that we know that we don’t have to waste our time on it anymore,” he said. “You can decommission it at your leisure,” he added, and then turned to leave.

Zeveroux nodded in agreement and Malek’s back. Just as soon as he had entered he had left. Malek was a strange man, but Zeveroux didn’t hate him. He was cruel and lost his temper easily, but Zeveroux had never had to deal first hand with that side of him. Once his boss was gone he allowed himself to relax. Now he didn’t have to worry about Rho, and he didn’t have any other work coming in.

The nicest thing about working under Malek was that he got paid regardless of his work. Zeveroux had proven he was useful in the long run, so he didn’t have to worry about not having money. His work was shady, and had to be perfect, but it lasted for life and the only way to get fired was to die. Zeveroux chuckled darkly at the thought. He’d be more likely to die at Malek’s hands than anyone else’s.

Suddenly Mu came over to him. The little Maus looked excited. He plugged himself in and the words “Rho is normal” flashed on the screen in big letters.

“Huh?” Zeveroux said confused.

The Maus paused and then the screen changed. “When you’re not around Rho works normally,” it said.

“What?” Zeveroux asked.

“Apparently it just doesn’t like you,” Mu typed.

“Helpful,” Zeveroux mumbled. “Anything else you’d like to share?” he asked.

“Don’t be mad at me. Find some pretty girl, apparently Rho likes them,” Mu typed, "he'll work for you then."

Zeveroux was beyond annoyed at this point. There was no way he could decommission the stupid Maus now. It could have incredibly valuable information stored in it. “Very well, I’ll see what I can do,” he said.

Mu seemed satisfied and left to the back room again.

“Wait, didn’t I tell you to stay away from Rho?” Zeveroux shouted.
