The slums are a rundown, old heap of a town tucked deep in the jungles, with townsfolk consisting mostly of poachers, black marketeers, thieves, and fugitives. While the ideal tourist spot, some travel to the Slums to make use of the black markets. (+2 Defense, +2 Speed)

Return to The Slums

Royal Blood in the Streets (Ari & I) M:E

Postby Sarah » 05/05/2017 10:20 PM

The strong smell of smoke mixed with the cutting air of night brought Relic a strange comfort. The worn-down bar he was in was just like any other in the slums.

The slums... One of the few places that reminded him of home. Perhaps not his home, but most of Hell lived in similar squalor. The Ruby Fortress was, of course, one of the few exceptions. It was almost enough to make him homesick, but it mostly just made him sick. Between his parents, who were eternally hateful towards each other, and his own people, who were violent and repulsive, Relic needed a break. Even if it meant nothing else than meeting new filth and hate, he was happy to be away.

Although he was trying his best to blend into Evelon culture, he couldn't help how he was raised. He knew he was haughty and careless around people who could harm him, but he was also learning from his mistakes. For the most part he could blend in rather seamlessly, at least he dressed commonly enough to cover his devilish looks. That, more often than not, kept people from looking too closely at him.

There was no better place than the Slums when one is looking to be ignored. Plus there were a few less rules in the Slums, at least where the underworld was involved. Should he want to have any fun, the city was at his disposal. Relic couldn't help but smirk into his drink, hadn't he come here to get away from his life before? There were some things that he could not forget, no matter the amount of alcohol he consumed.

(Sarte, human-form)

Sarte was the kind of man that you didn't typically want to mess with. He didn't look like much - tall, quasi-elegant, with slim fingers and eyes that bore into your soul. Whatever else he looked, he didn't appear to be the friendly type. A curse of his appearance. Nevertheless, those that knew him knew that he had a quick wit, a soft touch, and a quiet demeanor that often belied his outward appearance. While he was never crass or cruel, he did tend to be a little on the reclusive side, and sometimes that was a turn-off for potential friends. There were times when this aspect of his personality fell by the wayside, though. Mostly, when he was hunting.

He had picked out this man a good long time ago and had been following him through the streets - as well as to where he lived. Such a posh, haughty presence. Once that appealed to Sarte no end - if only for teaching him a lesson or two. He'd spoken to Emille lately about a potential experimental 'item', and bought it from him entirely too eagerly. He didn't have anyone to use it on... yet. That was part of the reason why he was here. This stuck up young fellow seemed to be the perfect sort of candidate. The whole drinking thing wasn't exactly preferable, but he had methods to remove the alcohol in the blood... if that became a needful thing.

Thus, he strode into the bar, and sat down beside the man - feigning as though he had never seen him before in his life, and cared little about what he may do or may say. This wasn't true, but Sarte was nothing if not a seasoned actor. He didn't make a big to-do about being close, or being in touching range. Simply ordered his drink, as though this was a usual thing, and continued to act as though he were uninterested. This man's type seemed to be such that he would soon nose into Sarte's business. He knew the type. It was simply a matter of time.

There was a desperate need for distraction, and Relic knew that desperation was going to get him into trouble. It was almost too bad that he didn’t care. He had promised himself he wasn’t going to lose his mind to constant worry about what might be going on back home. Despite the distance, he couldn’t get himself to focus on his own life or his own pleasures. Even with the way he left, which involved a lot of spilt blood, he couldn’t let go. It was almost immediately that he turned to liquor. Hard drugs were purged from his system too quickly, as his blood and breed kept him from being effected by human poisons. Alcohol on the other hand was a subtler poison, and so long as he kept it flowing he could keep up a nice buzz.

Of one thing he was certain, he was not yet used to people just coming and being near him. He knew now not to stiffen as soon as someone was within touching distance. Nonetheless, he had no expected to be sitting with company at the bar. Relic spared a glance at the stranger before returning to his drink. Curiosity flared inside him as he wondered what brought this someone to his side. Did the man need something from him? Relic was almost certain it would be rude to just ignore him. He took another drink and wondered how weak humans must be to call the stuff liquid courage.

“Hey,” he greeted, and turned towards the man. “What brings an elegant young man such as yourself to such a dreary place as this?” he asked.

Sarte kept his expression cool and level, pretending to be mostly un-invested in the topic of conversation. Inwardly, he was cringing. A pick-up line? Really? I mean, he knew the guy was desperate, but there were limits. Outwardly, he smiled in a vaguely jaded manner, cultivating a particular personality type that he knew this guy was going to fall for. Relic was the type of man who enjoyed the 'quiet' ones, the ones with a story to tell, and a sob-story at that. Watching him as long as he had, Sarte knew that and played to those values. The man was looking for a hot screw, not a casual conversation. He had to keep it low and play it cool. Nothing he hadn't done nearly one-hundred times already.

"Ah, not much to be honest. My boyfriend just left me." He took a sip of his drink and looked a bit beaten down by that statement. "Gave the typical excuse. 'It's not you, it's me' - and walked off arm in arm with my colleague from work." Pausing in his speech, he raised the half-full glass to the sky and made a mock-toast. "Here's to naivete and dumb ideas. Also to the bastards that break your heart because of them."

Relic couldn’t help but smile, warmly, and with a tint of sadness in his features. Any human could relate to such a tale. The tragic love story, heartbreak and betrayal, and the rebound. Early on it had confused Relic to no end. Soon after he realized humans made emotional connections much more quickly, and more deeply than Demons. It didn’t really help that Relic was royalty where he came from, no one had ever wanted to break it off with him, there was too much to gain, even if the relationship was shit. He had always had the time to laze with his lovers, to savor them and move on. Humans worked so damn quick they hopped lovers before fully satisfying the last.

“Well, I’d say he’s the one missing out, he just doesn't know it yet,” Relic replied. He raised his glass in agreement to the man’s toast, and used it as an excuse to slam the rest of it back. Around others he couldn’t drink copious amounts of alcohol very quickly without raising suspicion, but maintaining any semblance of a buzz, or even getting drunk was almost impossible when he had to nurse a drink for more than a minute.

"Oh, no doubt he'll come crawling back. I might take him. I might not. I guess it just depends on where I am at the time. Even though he did that to me, I'm still..." He sighed, and shook his head. "Hopelessly in love with that man. I guess that's my issue. I fall in love too easily. I need something that's going to make me forget all about him - even if just for the evening."

He left the invitation open and dangling, nursing his drink while he waited for the demon to respond. Sarte was pleased with the way the evening was going. He might have his subject by the end of tonight if things turned out right here. If he knew anything about Relic, he knew that his sort tended to do anything, try anything, and BE anything in order to get that adrenaline rush, that kick of sensual overload that most people took for granted. It wasn't easy getting that when you were what... well...Relic WAS. Which Sarte knew. Both from observation, and some careful research. He wasn't just a pretty face, after all. He was a catch, a prize. Something to be earned and won. Sarte had done most of the legwork already - now he had to spring the trap. But not yet. Wait until the fish was on the hook.

"I tried turning to good ol' Mr. Scotch. But for some reason, I don't have the taste for it tonight."

His parents were human enough to afford him an emotional range including 'positive' emotions, but love was not something he felt easily -if at all. Lust he knew, and gluttony, and fatal attractions, but love was something he struggled to recognize within himself.

"Just an evening hmm?" He wondered. Silence stretched and Relic allowed it to linger. Oh the possibilities that flowed through his mind. He'd go along, of course, but feigned caution or contemplation was almost as good as the real thing.

Relic slammed the rest of his drink, mostly for show, and grinned recklessly at the man. "Who says alcohol is the only way to numb heartache?" He asked. "I'm Relic by the way," he added, he'd decided this risk was worth it.

"Sabin." Sarte lied, the name one he frequently used. His lips drew into a tired smile, and he offered his hand to the demon. "I'm sorry I've been telling you my tragic tale. It's really not that bad, I guess. I just..." He sighed and buried his head in his arms. "If there are other ways than alcohol to move on from this - even if just for tonight - I would welcome them. You learn to not underestimate the pleasure of being numb for a couple of hours once you've felt this kind of pain."

He left his head down on his arms for a couple of minutes, then raised it to peer at Relic as though through 'drunken glasses'. Truthfully, he always took his 'alcohol antidote' before he went hunting. It made it easier to act, and easier to keep up appearances. The whiskey glass was drained, and Sarte was still as sober and clear-headed as ever. Regardless of that fact, his acting chops were nothing to sneeze at. Plus, acting drunk-off-your-ass had it's certain pleasures as well.

"Where you shtaying?" he slurred, studying the demon through half-lidded eyes. "I've got a hotel room over near the shopping dishtrict. Uh... I might have forgotten the number..." He forced a flush to his face by thinking of rather dark things. He'd booked that room a day and a half ago in advance it had everything he needed to get the demon unconscious, and safely back to his lab. Granted, that was if things went his way tonight.
