Return to Nodia Sea

The ground shaker's domain [Open]

Pele

Deep in the Nodia Sea, a girl lay on a bed of reeds, watching the fish swim by with a bored expression.
"Nothing ever happens around here, damn it," she grunted. Her knee-length, straight, jet-black hair drifted in the constantly moving water as she turned her head to look at some kuni fighting with fire-red eyes. With a sigh, she sat up and pushed off from the reef edge, angling her body to drift deeper. As the waters grew darker around her, her skin grew lighter. Even her clothes seemed to glow red as she stepped onto the sandy bottom. At this depth, the only thing that shed light was her. Well, and the occasional other bioluminescent creature. She wasn't sure why she had come down here, actually. Something in the earth seemed to be calling to her, and she crouched down to the ocean floor in an attempt to find out what.

See, Pele was named after the goddess of the volcano, which meant she always felt attracted to fire and the earth. She was still untrained though, as she'd yet to meet another elemental or god/goddess. So her whole life, she'd been working at training herself to use her abilities properly. For the most part, she didn't actually give a crap as to what she used them for, but on occasion, her temper had caused some sort of natural disaster and that wasn't good. Even now, she could feel the earth shifting under her feet. Calling, answering, longing for her. She couldn't make sense of what it wanted, and sighed at it. Suddenly, she could sense rumbling. Now, in the water, there isn't actually any such thing as rumbling, but creatures of the water could sense it around them. Pele was no different...if anything, she could sense it more, since she found herself swimming upwards, towards an overhanging reef. Once there, she saw that the gorge edge was beginning to crumble. Instinctively, she paced a hand on the rock and focused her energy towards it.
No. Her thoughts echoed through the earth and the rumbling ceased. She did it! A sudden sense of exhaustion overcame her and she swam up to the surface, dragging herself onto a sunny rock and falling asleep in its warmth.
You can pretend that when you hear my voice, darling, it's your choice not to fall in.

But it's all an act, 'cause I know exactly what you're wanting. You know it's what I'm wanting

Boy I know what you desire, oh, you're such a bad, bad liar

This could be perfection, or venom dripping in your mouth

Singing like a Siren, love me while your wrists are bound

((Woah, I started this that long ago? Well, I want to keep going. Feel free to join! Btw: here's her human form))

A distinct rumbling woke her from her nap.
Oh for frig's sake!
Before she could even sit up or connect to the earth, the rumbling knocked her off of her rocky perch. The water around her seemed to rise, and suddenly dropped, causing a ripple effect that was barely noticeable as being anything other than ordinary waves. Except, by the time those ripples reached shore, they'd have gathered enough energy to wipe out any low-lying coastal areas. Not that there was a whole lot of stuff on the shores of the Nodia Sea, thankfully.

Bobbing in the waves, Pele vaguely wondered if she'd caused the earthquake herself, or if she coincidentally happened to be in the right place at the right time. Or...wrong place at the wrong time? ...

Same difference.

Something deep down told her she had nothing to do with it, this time.
She wondered how big of a tsunami this quake had caused and dipped under the water. Instinctively sensing the direction to the shore, she turned towards it. She swam through the water at a speed that would be perfectly natural for a fish or some aquatic mammal but it seemed a bit odd for a humanoid figure.

It wasn't all that long before the shoreline was in sight. She'd slowed down, since the force of the water drawing her along was getting quite strong. If she wanted to approach land, she'd have to be careful or risk getting smashed up against anything sitting solid in the water's path. In fact, to ride in on a tsunami was a surefire way to get killed.

Well, for an ordinary thing. Pele was certainly no ordinary thing. Carefully maintaining her distance from the forefront of the wave, she bobbed along the surface of the water, watching curiously. She'd never actually seen a tsunami in person like this. She doubted many, if any, people had ever seen a tsunami from this particular perspective.

As the water of the Nodia Sea slammed into the sandy shore, it rose up, dragging trees and underbrush along with it as it made its way inland. Swiftly, Pele grabbed one such tree and hauled herself up in a smooth motion that one wouldn't think possible in this scenario. Balancing on it as one would a surfboard, she rode along with the course of the oversized wave, whooping in delight as she dodged various obstacles flung into her path.

A grey, shiny head popped up next to her - a seamare. While seamares were far from the usual aquatic victims of tsunamis, being strong swimmers, they were also fond of sunbathing on the beach. This one was likely napping when the tsunami hit.

"What the hell are you doing?" he asked indignantly. "Don't you have any idea how dangerous that is?"

My wraiths, though not wraiths then, wandered deep into the heart of the polar storm. They tried to fight sleep, naive to the inevitability of their fate. When they awoke, they saw before them my own self, so much a part of the ice and cold they almost fail to see me. I wear a crown of the coldest, sturdiest ice, and my claws and fur have coated themselves in it.
I stand aloof to the cold, for I have lived in it so long, been a part of it so long, it no longer concerns me.

My wraiths are cursed to wander the polar tundra, eternally freezing, following mortal explorers and trying to warn them with their presence that they should not travel onward, should not make the same mistake. But there will always be those who persist in pressing on, never knowing what they are doomed to face, or destined to suffer.

Pele had very nearly collided with a broken tree trunk when a voice spoke next to her. Regaining her balance, she managed a glance down at the seamare that had appeared next to her. At his words, she frowned and swerved around a floating...something, before answering.
"Hey, a girl's got to entertain herself somehow."

With a sharp laugh, she somehow managed to jump, tree-board and all, over a rock before splashing back down into the current. Her joy came to an abrupt halt, however, when she noticed a sharp cliff face in her path. Debris was already piling up against it as the waters rose higher upon its edge before rushing around it. However skilled she may be, Pele couldn't stay on her perch and survive that. With a sigh, she gave up and slipped back into the water. Swimming against the current calmly, she maintained her position and watched her tree-board splinter against the stone.
Finally, she turned her head back to her new company.
"Well. So much for that."

The seamare ducked down into the water to give her more room to veer, then popped back up on her other side - in time to watch her jump a rock. He gasped, then shook his head and grumbled as he re-submerged and surged forward in the water, chasing her.

Cantankerous as he was being, he was desperately concerned for this strange girl's safety. Tsunamis were extremely dangerous. An old legend even stated they were the sea's way of waging war upon the land, its eternal rival, whom it sought to annihilate in favor of more sea. He hardly doubted that; earlier, the weight of the water had pressed him hard into the sand, stealing what little breath he had saved and sapping away all hope for another. When he finally came up for air, gasping and choking, he had been surprised to live.

Although he had been submerged and at a distance before, he somehow magically appeared by her side when she decided she was done.

"So much for that indeed!" he scolded. "People die in these things! You should be more careful!"

Raising an eyebrow at the seamare's tone, Pele smirked.
"More careful, huh?" she chuckled. "I'm not most people."
Shaking her head she turned to face the open sea. She was getting bored of this tsunami already. It was a novelty while it lasted (who could say they've surfed one?) but Pele was sure she'd get plenty of chances to experience them in her lifetime. Especially if she didn't learn proper control soon. It wasn't like this one was her fault to begin with, anyway.

For now, this stupid sea seemed to lack anything interesting otherwise. She frowned at the rushing water as if it were its fault for being boring.
"So, what do you do for fun around here, anyway?" she asked with a sigh. This guy seemed to be local.

Th seamare muttered under his breath, clearly not believing her.

"Well, usually we enjoy the sun on the beach, but we don't have one anymore," he said, giving her a pointed look. It was a little funny, really - he was just trying to highlight his point about tsunamis being dangerous, but accidentally jabbed her for (possibly) destroying his beach. "Besides that, I guess fishing. I'm not really sure. I don't really do land. I can, I just don't."

Pele's eyebrow twitched at the stranger's comment and she looked at him with a flat expression. One could swear the water had warmed ever so slightly around them.
"It was not my fault," she grumbled. For a while, she fumed a bit, face turned away. Finally, she drew herself up as straight as one could in the water and looked back at the seamare.
"Well fishing's just dumb for a sea creature. Besides," she paused and looked over her shoulder at the wrecked mass of rock, water, and debris behind them with a strange expression. "I...don't think there's any chance of land activities right now."

Shaking her head and returning her indignant gaze to the seamare, Pele huffed.
"Why, you think I can't do water stuff?" For a moment, she returned her gaze to the sea and back.
"Assuming, of course, that you can even come up with anything more interesting than I could." Her tone held a challenge in it. The earth deep, deep below them seemed to be calling to Pele, and her emotions seemed to be affected by it - not that this stranger would know that.

((Sorry it's kind of a mess - Muse isn't being cooperative. Feel free to take this any direction you want.))

((idk man that was pretty good))

The seamare blinked, perplexed - and, to himself, wondered if she'd just peed.

"I didn't say it was your fault," he said. "People don't cause tsunamis. They just happen."

Fishing, dumb? He pursed his rubbery lips into a frown and tilted his head. "I guess," he said. "It can be nice to have the fish come to you for a change, though."

He swung his tail around in front of him and relaxed on his back, tailfin gently curling in the air. "You probably could come up with something more interesting," he said. "All I ever do with my free time is sleep."

((AHAHAH I didn't even think of pee I'm crying XD;;))

Pele didn't dignify the comment about tsunamis with a response. Though she never quite tried to hide it, it didn't feel right to just blurt it out that she wasn't what she appeared. As he commented on the fishing, she gladly turned her thoughts to that instead. She supposed that chasing your food could get tiring, but rather than wait around forever for them to come to her, she would just go to a restaurant. Well, whatever. She was perfectly willing and able to walk around land; maybe it was different for some other kinds of sea-faring folk.

She watched for a moment as the seamare floated on his back before absent-mindedly looking around at their surroundings. They were quite far back from the forefront of the tsunami, and the water had mostly settled here. Though, bits of trees and other debris were starting to float past them on their way out to sea. She watched one little branch drift past between the two of them while the seamare talked. She looked up at him with such an expression that said 'of course you do'.
"Somehow, I'm not surprised," she replied flatly. He liked fishing and laying about in the sun - his laid-back interests said more about him than anything else.

Deep below, the sand shifted ever so imperceptibly and a slow grin snaked its way onto her face, though she tried to smother it. In her mind, she felt little veins snaking underneath the giant cliff not far from them. Yes, the same cliff she'd almost collided with earlier. Breathing in slowly through her nose, she mentally took hold of the veins. Letting the breath out just as slowly, she pictured the veins shifting in time to her breath. A tug in her gut told her she'd achieved her goal. A small tremor shook through the cliff, not really noticeable in the water, but probably pretty strong on land. Well, strong enough to dislodge some large stones from the top. She moved back, ever so slightly, as they began to move. Toppling, they smacked into the water just a couple feet from them. One happened to land just the right way to send a thick spray of water over the floating seamare. Of course, that one hadn't been intentional, but Pele couldn't say she didn't enjoy it. She tried to swallow her laugh and forced her face into an innocent and surprised expression.

((lol :P))

He giggled. It was hardly untrue; he was a lazy butt.

He opened his mouth to speak, but heard the stones roar and give. His head snapped toward them. Tail collected beneath him, he looked on in fear as they came crashing down. He turned his head to protect his eyes as the water reacted violently, stinging his neck.

"M-maybe we should find somewhere else to swim," he said, eyeing the cliffs very nervously. "The island is falling apart." That last sentence was tinged with sadness - this island was his home. He didn't want to see it broken like this.

((It's kinda hard to get someone that takes things so seriously to laugh :'D))
