Return to Nodia Sea

[* Pirate Party [P]

The boy fiddled with the book in his hands, blinking a few times as his eyes slowly started to stop seeing doubles. He noticed that watching the sea and listening to the sound of the wildlife from this kind of scenery helped him relax and recollect his thoughts. Considering that the pirate ship had been floating about the Nodia Sea for quite a while, the boy actually didn't have much of a choice. It was either look at the sea all around you, or lock yourself up in your cabin further inside the ship. At least the fresh air was welcome to try and heal the light-headedness he was feeling.

Mostly, reading the book was always an ordeal, since reading the magic runes inside was taxing on his very mind and soul. In big quantities, reading the mysterious magic inside the book could even be taxing enough to force him into a coma. Since the last runes hadn't been very helpful in guiding the ship anywhere, the boy had tried to push his limits a little and tried to more than just once a day. About three days down the line, he was starting to feel bigger side-effects that took longer to go away. With a sigh, he put his arms on the edge of the boat and rested his head on them, hoping it would help with the nausea.

"Been reading that book again, Joshua?"

Image

Glancing to the side, Joshua gave a look at the man who decided to keep him company, leaning against the boat from his elbow. "Shouldn't you be driving the ship, Adair?" Joshua called out to the carefree boy next to him, but instead of getting sheepishness, he got a happy, satisfied grin from the other.

"Nah," Adair replied as he waved his hand dismissively. "Sedna was dying to try it, so I'm letting her control the wheel while I take a break," the captain explained, running a hand through his black hair and enjoying the breeze that was passing by.

But instead of giving the captain a dismissive look, Joshua actually raised an eyebrow. "You do understand Sedna has the ability to destroy your ship, don't you?"

"Pfft, are you kidding?" Adair answered with a laugh and a nonchalant voice. "All there is is water and more water all around us. Unless she's so incompetent as to force the ship to turn around belly-up, we'll be just fine. Besides, we don't have any specific direction yet, right?"

"You're underestimating her ability to put people's lives in jeopardy," Joshua argued, but again, his words were met with a grin, and the boy could only guess that the captain wouldn't be convinced otherwise.

Some distance away, a second pirate ship was bobbing idly on the sea. The Blue Tide had been sailing for quite a few days now, as there wasn't much time to stop and obtain supplies. Of course, "obtain", for the pirates, usually meant "pillage a town and steal its goods". But at this time, they didn't even consider playing the role of the bad guys.

Recently, several small towns had been the victims of a series of mysterious kidnappings. Rumors suggested that the culprit was a Dragonian, but no one knew who the person might be, nor could anyone think of potential reasons behind the kidnappings. The criminal didn't seem particularly picky with who he or she was snatching away either. Men, women, elders, and children were all taken away.

Another rumor hinted that another pirate crew was involved in the disappearances, and that was where Captain Vell and his wife, Tara, thought they could help. They certainly couldn't cooperate with any government officials since they were pirates and had pulled off their own crimes before, but they were confident that they could find some answers on their own. And so they were here, out at sea, on the lookout for potential suspects.

Vell was on the deck of the Blue Tide, looking across the ocean with a telescope. He had spotted another ship earlier and was trying to follow it as discretely as possible. "Do you think we can catch up to it?" he asked Tara, who was standing next to him.

"I'm sure we will!" she assured him. "You're the greatest pirate captain ever, after all. We'll find them, and if they do turn out to be involved in this case, we'll teach them a lesson they won't forget!"

He smiled warmly at Tara's confidence. He could always count on her to lift his spirits.

The two pirates stayed by the deck, although not much of a conversation happened, considering the nature of the brown-haired pirate that was still recovering from the side-effects of reading that mysterious book. Joshua was letting the sounds of the ocean lull him to sleep, and Adair was just enjoying some time off while someone else was handling the boat. Despite only seeing water and more water, it was still a peaceful, soothing scenery to look at. To someone who devoted his life to seafaring, it obviously didn't bother him to spend so much time on the same terrain.

The two were quietly enjoying the scenery when a voice suddenly echoed from atop the ship's mast, all the way from the crow's nest. "Adair!"

Image

While Joshua only opened his eyes, Adair did turn around to take a look up above, to see his half-sister trying to get his attention. "What's up, Meryl?"

"I can see a pirate ship coming after us," Meryl pointed out as she stretched her arm towards the back of the ship, while her other hand was still holding the telescope. "I haven't seen them before, but they're catching up to us."

"Eh, leave them be," Adair replied, again waving his hand nonchalantly. "We're probably in their path and they're in a hurry to get to the next town." If it was a ship they'd never seen before, then it couldn't be the ones who were chasing the two siblings. There was no reason to be alarmed.

Of course, Joshua didn't think the same way. "Are you naive enough to believe that?" Even the rookiest of pirates knew not to trust any incoming ships, regardless of how small or harmless they looked. Clearly, that was something this captain didn't quite think about.

"Not every pirate is a criminal, Joshua," Adair answered as he turned back to lean against the edge of the ship. "We're both examples of that, right? Besides, it might just be a traveling boat, and not a pirate ship."

The last point left Joshua raising an eyebrow at the captain curiously. "I would expect your half-sister to recognize a pirate ship when she sees one."

"Sister," Adair corrected, not liking it when people called the two half-siblings instead of just siblings. "And I know she can recognize pirate ships when she sees them, that's not what I'm saying. Appearances can be misleading."

The fact the ship was coming right for them told Joshua Adair was being way too careless about the situation. Despite that, the captain clearly had no interest in trying to prepare for a battle.

The Blue Tide advanced closer and closer to the other ship, yet its target did not seem to react in any way. Vell took it as a sign that they hadn't been noticed and headed over to the steering wheel. He began guiding his ship into a position that would be beneficial for an attack on the other ship, if that was what this encounter would come down to.

"Are you sure they're bad though, dear?" Tara asked him. "We don't want to provoke an unnecessary conflict, after all."

"Well, we'll question them first," Vell replied. "Of course I'll try to phrase it in a way that isn't immediately threatening. But if they do turn out to be suspicious, I'll be very clear that they're in for trouble." He grinned mischievously. It had been a while since he ran into other pirates, and this was sure to be an interesting situation no matter where it went.

Once they were a certain distance away from the ship, Vell turned to Tara and nodded. It was her signal to act, and she knew very well what she had to do. She took a deep breath and vaulted over the edge of the ship. As she fell, a fine, icy mist enveloped her whole body, and when it blew away, she had transformed into a sleek, wingless, Ambia with scales in the same hue as the ocean. She plunged into the waters and began swimming towards the target ship, hidden well by her coloration. If one looked closely enough, however, the serpentine shape was still faintly visible...

Knowing her brother, Meryl did the exact the opposite of what Adair had said, and instead of putting her attention on what was coming ahead, the watcher kept a close eye on the pirate ship behind them. Adair was too laid-back; not only that, he also wanted to avoid confrontation. He figured that if he ignored certain problems long enough, they would just disappear on their own. Meryl thought the opposite and preferred to be safer. Fortunately for the two, at least one of them was trying to be cautious during their journey.

Of course, Meryl had been right to keep an eye on the opposing ship, because the boat was getting closer and closer. The more she observed the boat, the more she realized they were probably aiming for them, and not just trying to pass them like Adair seemed to think. "Adair," Meryl called out again, this time trying to sound a bit more alarming. "I really don't think they're just trying to pass us. The folks on that boat are definitely pirates." Of course, she was expecting those words to go in one ear and got out the other, but at least she had to try to knock some sense into her brother.

This time, she noticed Joshua reacting to her words, but Adair still wasn't doing much of anything against the potentially upcoming threat. "Meryl, don't worry!" the captain replied to his sister with a confident grin. "Just because they're pirates doesn't mean they're going to attack us." Really, sometimes he felt like he was the only one who tried to think things more pleasantly. Again, not all pirates were ruffians and scumbags; there was no need for immediate alarm.

Leaving Adair to his carelessness, Joshua made his way to the back end of the boat to take a look at the upcoming ship himself. It was right at that time that he saw something jump from the opposing boat and take a plunge straight into the ocean. Considering that hadn't been human, that was all the more reason to get ready for an upcoming attack. "Adair," Joshua called out, turning around to face the captain. "Something just dove from the boat, and that wasn't human. You should get ready for an attack."

Even that didn't really faze the captain. All Adair did was blink curiously at Joshua without moving an inch to react about a potential threat. "Pfft, don't be that way. Maybe they were executing someone, or maybe that was a siren they threw off board. Seriously, why are you guys being so paranoid?"

"You're the one not being careful enough," Joshua argued, his usually neutral tone get a bit more irritated and indignant. The more time they spent arguing here, the closer that other ship was getting. "You said earlier that they might not be ruffians, yet you're suggesting they might have executed someone? Good pirates wouldn't do something like that."

Tara sped towards the other ship as swiftly as possible. If she did this quickly, the ship would be less likely to get away. The waters in the Nodia Sea were astonishingly clear, so she could see the bottom of the ship- the thing she was aiming for- quite easily. Once she was close enough to it, she mentally apologized to all the fish swimming around the ship and focused all of her energy on the surrounding waters.

The icy mist reappeared around Tara's claws. Watching her abilities at work was like watching frost form on a window. A tiny bit of crystalline ice appeared right under the boat and then grew wider at an alarming speed. There was a gritty, crackling noise as the ice field expanded all around the ship.

This was her secret power, the Ice Dragonforce, and it was incredibly useful at sea. True to chemistry, it was harder for her to freeze salt water than fresh water, so an endeavor like this sapped a good deal of Tara's energy. But the shock and inconvenience it flung upon her victims was well worth it. She hoped that the ice would freeze the ship, or at least slow it down.

After her job was done, she poked her head out of the water and looked up at the ship. "Ahoy!" she called out to the ship's crew. "I hope you don't mind us stopping you for a moment!"

She glanced behind her to see how Vell was doing. The Blue Tide was drawing ever closer, and it seemed like he had prepared his crew, for she could see people scurrying about the decks.

"Well, maybe executing is a bit strong," Adair corrected himself, the captain continuing the unimportant argument over solving the current issue at hand.

"It doesn't matter," Joshua cut him, taking a few brisk and antsy steps toward the careless captain. "The problem is—"

Joshua was about to keep on going, but all three pirates simultaneously reacted to the crackling sound that suddenly appeared around them. Even from the top of the mast, Meryl had heard the sound, and not only that, she'd seen the source of it. "Adair! The ship! They— Ah!"

Her words were cut short as the ship came to a sickening halt, sending Meryl almost flying over the crow's nest. Down on the deck, Joshua lost his balance and rolled about for a few feet from being forced down by the abrupt stop of the boat. Adair quickly got a grip on the edge of the boat, but the captain had gotten much too close to just toppling right down on the desk like Joshua. "Wh-what the hell?!" he screamed out as he looked over the border of the ship to try to spot the source of the abrupt stop. With a loud gasp, Adair regained his balance and balanced himself over the edge of the boat more. "Th-they froze the boat! They froze the boat!"

"We had told you to be careful," Joshua complained from the ground, holding his head as he started sitting up from falling over earlier. Regardless of that, his words had fallen on deaf ears. Adair was now in an indignant rage, and while the captain was being taken aback by the event, Joshua noticed his pirate partner, Sedna, make a dash for him from the upper deck.

Image

"Joshua!" the girl pirate yelled out as she jumped and hopped over stairs and other such things in order to reach her partner faster. Immediately, she grabbed Joshua's arm and helped him up. "Are you guys okay? It wasn't even my fault this time, either!"

"I know," Joshua answered briskly, although his anger wasn't directed at her. "We spotted a pirate ship behind us, and Adair ignored it. They ended up freezing the thing in place."

"O-oh," Sedna replied, blinking and turning to Adair with a worried look, seeing the captain still being indignantly enraged at the situation.

While the three pirates were still regaining their balance, Adair was dealing with the newcomer down in the sea below them. "If I mind?!" Adair screamed out at the Paragon down in the ocean, his face showing fifty shades of anger. "You froze my ship in place! You think I wouldn't mind?!" They weren't known for causing troubles in towns — in fact, they were known for solving their problems. Was this just a pointless attack? Were those pirates just trying to loot them?

Enraged, and seeing that rival boat approaching even more, Adair got even more indignant and upset. "Yes, I do mind, and let me tell you something else!" As he started talking to the Paragon again, the peculiar crystal necklace around his started to glow. However, from the vast array of colors, only the purple crystal started glowing, sticking out like a sore thumb amongst the others. Shortly after glowing, there was a noticeable change in the air, particularly around Adair. It didn't take long for the strange energy to converge to one particular place, and behind the captain's back appeared a pair of purple wings of a hue that matched the glowing crystal perfectly. They weren't only made out of air and wind; they were literally solid, with singular weathers and muscles all connected together.

With his wings revealed, Adair spread them wide and jumped off the boat and down to the icy plateau that was now surrounding the bottom of his ship and keeping it in place. The magic wings worked just as bird's wings would, flapping and gliding their user down perfectly. Landing in front of the Paragon on the icy surface, the red crystal on Adair's necklace started to glow together with the purple one. "You better have a good reason to keep me stuck here," the captain snapped at the dragon, the fact the Ambia was multiple times his size completely going over his head. "Or else I'm going to unfreeze my boat and make yours explode!" he threatened as he slammed his hand against the side of his boat against a small portion of the ice. When he did so, the ice around his hand started to melt quickly, and hot air could be felt around that particular area. Not only could this pirate control air to an exceptional level, but fire seemed to be possible for him as well.

From the upper deck, all three pirates were watching from above. "D-don't be rash, Adair!" Meryl yelled from above, watching her brother with a worried look on her face.

"He's turning such a petty accident into a war," Joshua commented quietly with an irritated sigh. What a mess.

As expected, Tara's surprise freeze-over had created quite the ruckus on board. She almost giggled when one of the men shouted down at her angrily, but she held it in and tried to keep a straight face. This was diplomacy, after all. But her expression became one of surprise when she caught sight of his glowing necklace. Did he have some sort of power too?

That question answered itself once he hopped down with his newly formed purple wings. Tara was thoroughly impressed, though she couldn't tell whether the necklace bequeathed him his powers or if he was born with them, like Dragonians were. Her awe quickly transformed into concern, however, once she saw him thawing out the ship. Who knows what other things he can do? she wondered to herself.  Better make this quick. She had seen plenty of explosions before, courtesy of her ex-husband, Reyson, and wasn't about to have her beloved and his boat blown to smithereens. At the very least, this Adair guy's companions seemed to be calmer than he was.

"Whoa, hey!" Tara exclaimed. "Slow down a little! We just want to ask some questions, that's all."

"Aye, we're trying to conduct an investigation," came Vell's voice. The Blue Tide had finally drifted close enough to Adair's ship for Vell to chime in, and he was speaking from the front of his vessel. "Don't worry, unless you happen to be the bad guys, we're not going to do anything to you." He paused for a second and then laughed. "Though, admittedly, we're not one-hundred percent good guys, either."

Although Vell had his men readied, their weapons weren't out yet in an attempt to seem more peaceable. "We're just wondering," he continued, "whether you have heard anything about kidnappings during your travels?" He would judge if they were involved in the incidents based on how they responded to the inquiry.

The Ambia's attempt at calming down the captain was nothing short of useless and in vain. "You are asking me to slow down? You froze my ship, I'll have you know!" This was actually very concerning. Not so long ago, the group had been ambushed by a pair of people who'd managed to capture Meryl. While Adair and the others had been able to save her, one of the two used extremely powerful ice power, so having to deal with this again wasn't giving Adair's nerves any good feeling. What if the ones that were chasing them were on that ship, working with another group of pirates?

Back on the deck of the ship, Joshua and the two girls were observing the situation with curiosity, although Meryl looked more insecure than the other two. "Say," Joshua piped up, while the enemy boat was still closing in on them, "Meryl, can elementalists take on different forms?" Something similar had crossed Joshua's mind, and even though their own enemy had been two males and this Ambia was a female, it was still good information to know.

"Of course not," Adair screamed out from down below, before his sister got to answer. "I've already told you! All elementalists do is pour in energy from the crystals to use elements! We don't shape-shift! Don't put me in the same race as this thing!"

"Although we can use elements without the crystals, they're significantly weaker without the extra energy. This Ambia isn't an elementalist," Meryl continued, ultimately cutting off her enraged brother down on the icy plateau below.

Between then and there, the situation moved along as the rival pirate ship parked closer to Adair's, the other ship having a much bigger crew. This ship was small enough that four people were enough to take care of it, considering all their unique abilities. In an actual battle, though, there was no telling how much of an advantage they would have against such a big number.

Adair was about to make a snarky comment about the good and evil mentions of the opposing captain, but he was cut off fairly quickly as the other man continued on with his questions. Admittedly, being asked about kidnappings was a pretty surprising question. When the captain asked, Adair's expression changed from indignant rage to something more surprised, and a little calmer.

While he still hadn't let his guard down, the winged captain didn't look any friendlier. "That depends on what exactly you mean by 'kidnappings'," Adair answered, though he paused after. What had happened to them was different; the two elementalists had been looking for Adair and Meryl specifically. However, was it possible that they had broadened their spectrum to random kidnappings as well? Considering Adair's group had a tendency to fix problems in the towns they visited, creating that sort of chaos would definitely attract their attention. "We didn't hear about them, but we were a victim of it. Still, I doubt the criminals that attacked us were related to whoever you're looking for."

"Your brother can be kinda intelligent when he tries, can't he?" Sedna quietly mentioned in passing to Meryl, blinking down at the captain down below.

Tara, needless to say, was a little irked when Adair called her a "thing". Dragonians were quite proud of their ability to change into dragons. To them, their dragon forms were an integral part of their existences, gifts from the mighty Ancient Force itself. But she tried to keep calm, for more anger wouldn't do any good in this situation.

Thankfully, Vell's mention of the kidnappings seemed to calm the man down slightly. Tara and Vell glanced at each other after Adair answered. If they understood correctly, this group had been attacked by people called "elementalists", and Adair himself seemed to be an elementalist as well, judging by the definition that the young woman had provided.

"I'll take your word for it," Vell sighed as he looked back at Adair. "We're going off of a rumor that pirates were involved in these kidnappings, so sorry for the trouble. If you had been the culprits, then we couldn't have afford to let you get away."

With that conclusion, the icy mist reappeared around Tara's claws. This time, the ice surrounding the ship receded, slowly allowing the ship to move again. "All right, you are free to go!" Tara chirped. "I just hope you'll forgive us a little. Though..." She paused and tilted her head. "I wish we could also help you with your problems with these 'elementalists'. It would be uncanny if it turned out they were also the ones we're chasing."

Despite having answered the rival pirates, Adair still looked nothing short of uninterested in the group. He looked more like a child who was reluctant to answer a question, but who figured he might as well just cooperate. Especially considering how simple their question had been, and how quickly they'd let his team go, too. "Whoa, wait, you guys actually froze my ship just—"

But his sentence was cut short as the ice under his feet started to disappear. At first, the captain was sure the Ambia was coming at them again, but instead of creating more ice, the plateau started to melt. Of course, that was the same area where Adair had been standing on. "Hey!" he called out in surprise as he quickly jumped and flapped his wings to keep himself in flight, now that there wasn't any solid platform under him. First the ship got frozen, and then he almost fell right into the ocean waters. What next? He gave Tara a look as he grumbled slightly.

At the mention of the rival pirates offering to help them with their problem, Adair sighed. Originally, he'd meant to ask them his own questions, considering they'd stopped his ship dead in its tracks for their own intentions. However, at the mention of them looking perplexed by the concept of elementalists, he figured the other pirate crew had no idea what exactly they were. "I was going to ask you if you had any elementalists on your ship," Adair started, still flapping his wings right above the water and overall staying close to the Ambia, "but you don't really seem to know what they are, so I doubt they'd go unnoticed on your ship if there were any."

"Have you gone to any towns recently?" Meryl piped up from the deck, the small trio having stayed quiet since the beginning of the conversation between the captains. "You might have heard about them, since they're not exactly... peaceful," she went on, using 'peaceful' for a lack of a better word, really. "They're a pair of male elementalists who roam the towns. One of them controls ground elements, while the other controls ice." They might not have seen them, but she figured that maybe they'd heard of them.

Tara didn't pay much heed to Adair's grumblings after he nearly dropped into the sea. He had insulted her, and she felt justified in almost letting him plunge into the giant saltwater bath that was Nodia. But as long as he acted more civil starting from now, she supposed she wouldn't mind. The ice was starting to melt underneath her claws too, so she slipped back into the water and simply floated on the surface of the waves.

"Hmm, let me think," Tara mused out loud. "We haven't gone ashore too recently, but...I do seem to recall hearing something about two ruffians."

"Not that we have much right to call others ruffians, though," Vell joked. "But yes, I also remember hearing about a pair of trouble makers when we had stopped near Jawan for a while. I didn't pick up anything about them using elements, but maybe they're the ones you want."

As the discussion went on, Vell's men disengaged from their battle-ready positions and returned to their prior duties. The pirate captain wondered whether he could somehow strike a deal with Adair's group. Perhaps if he and Tara helped Adair find these elementalists, he could request them to keep an eye out for the kidnappers in return. He cleared his throat and addressed Adair again. "Say, how about this? If we aid you in tracking down this duo, would you look into our kidnapping case in return? I think it's a fair deal, and it's for the general good of the public anyway."
