Nestled between Barakka and Lambastia, this salty sea's ownership is always under debate. One thing is known though; dangerous currents pass through the sea, sweeping from the northeast down through the southwest outlet. (+3 Speed)

Will you stop trying to sink my ship? [P]

Postby Jaden Wolf » 11/20/2017 10:36 PM

Arabex

Thunder rolled over the churning sea as the clouds thickened and moved in a way that almost seemed...alive. Along one of the main shipping routes, ships were tossed and turned, their sailors struggling to be heard over the howling winds as they wrestled with the rigging. Streaks of lightning came crashing down, almost teasing in their near-misses of the sailing vessels. Bravely, the men (and occasional woman) ignored the deadly flashes as they concerned themselves with keeping their vessel upright and intact.

Piper

A particular vessel, bearing a worn out mermaid on its prow, plunged through the waves. This vessel sported one very brave sailor - the only female on her ship - who hauled herself up the mast to secure the mainsail, which was slowly unfurling in the wind. Only for a moment did she pause, eyes wide, as a resounding boom signalled an explosion on another ship in their convoy.
You can pretend that when you hear my voice, darling, it's your choice not to fall in.

But it's all an act, 'cause I know exactly what you're wanting. You know it's what I'm wanting

Boy I know what you desire, oh, you're such a bad, bad liar

This could be perfection, or venom dripping in your mouth

Singing like a Siren, love me while your wrists are bound

The sailor finally reached her destination, deftly hauling up and securing the sail. Below, her shipmates scrambled across the deck, ensuring all their cargo was secure. A handful of men had gone to the port side, throwing over ropes as they tried to haul up survivors from their sinking companion vessel.

When the sail was secure, the girl named Piper braced herself against the mast and looked out at the sea. The other ship in their convoy had fallen behind, but was still otherwise alright. In the distance, she spotted two other ships, and a faded figure that she could not say was a ship, a large rock, or a small island. Lighting nearly blinded her as it struck right next to the ship. Blinking, she heard screaming that said the lightning had likely struck a few drowning sailors.

It was rather upsetting, that Piper had not seen this coming. She was a child of the sea, more or less, and was highly regarded and even sought after as a sailor. All the local sailors, and even a few from elsewhere, knew that Piper had a gift for 'listening to the sea'. She knew the course of the tide and currents, could sense shallows and reefs before coming up on them, and most importantly, detect any storm before the clouds were visible on the horizon.

This storm had, quite literally, come out of nowhere. One second it was a docile sea with a steady wind, perfect sailing conditions, the next, howling winds and crashing thunder. She'd only had a split-second warning before the stream of black clouds plowed through the open sky in a way Piper'd never seen or heard of before. She didn't have much longer to think over this peculiarity before the ship suddenly lurched, throwing her from her seat.

She hit the deck with a thud that left her winded. For a moment, she lay stunned, struggling to catch her breath. Thankfully, as a person who was not entirely mortal, she was not easy to break and healed a bit faster than most. She was pretty sure she hadn't damaged her spine. At worst, she'd broken a rib. With some difficulty, she pulled herself up to find out what had happened.

It was only a moment before she understood. A bolt of lightning had uncannily struck the anchor, somehow breaking its holding mechanism and dropping it. Which explained why she'd been thrown - they had club-hauled. A couple sailors had rushed to release the anchor before the ship could be torn apart by the waves.

More shouting drew Piper's attention. She looked to the bow, where others were pointing, and saw the other convoy ship on a collusion course. Turning, she spotted two men throwing their weight onto the wheel, struggling to turn the rudder and the ship with it. There was likely a similar situation on the other ship, as it slowly but surely began to turn. However, it didn't look like either ship would manage in time.

Racing up to the wheel, she pushed the men aside. They stepped out of her way easily, trusting her judgement, and merely held the wheel from each side. She put her hands on the spokes and closed her eyes. Breathing deeply, she imagined each breath matching the flow of the waves against the ship. In her mind's eye, she looked into the deep blue below the ship, and sensed it looking back. Let us turn, she asked it, stop fighting us, just for a moment.

For what seemed like an eternity, the deep blue was silent, and Piper thought it wouldn't listen. Then suddenly, the wheel jerked, flowing easily in either direction, the resistance gone. The two men, only mildly surprised, released the wheel as she turned the ship out of the path of the oncoming vessel. As the ships passed safely alongside each other, the crews of both ships cheered and waved. The wheel became more sluggish and heavy as the water's resistance returned.

"Thank you," she whispered to the sea. Around her, the men returned to their general noise - some cheering, some shouting, most just falling back into routine. It seemed as though the storm was lifting. Then, a sound seemed to stand out against the din. Laughter. Piper frowned and looked out over the crew. Some were laughing, but deep laughter steeped in relief. This was...higher, and seemed a little more...excited.

Piper stepped away from the wheel, one of the men stepping in wordlessly to replace her. Tilting her head, she tried to single out the sound. No one else seemed to notice, wrapped up in their duties or in their celebration. Again, the laughter rang out, and this time, it suddenly struck Piper as coming from above them.

Snapping her head back, she looked up. Only the mass of rolling cloud could be seen. It didn't take her long to figure it out - the storm had come far too quickly, and had unusually specific behaviour. "Do you think this is funny!?" she shouted, stunning the crew into silence. Piper had never really gotten angry before. Irritated, maybe. Exasperated, certainly. But not angry. Even the storm seemed to have gone quiet - the thunder sparse and the sound muted.

The crew looked at each other in confusion - was she talking to them? Of course it wasn't funny, they could have died. That's why they were happy to have survived. Slowly, they seemed to realize she wasn't even looking at them - stepping forward into the open center of the deck with her hands on her hips and a furious look on her face. Following her line of sight, they started to look up at the sky in confusion.

With a light peal of laughter, the sky seemed to condense and pull down towards the ship in the shape of a funnel. As the tip of the cloud mass approached the deck, it solidified into a feminine human shape. The girl's blue eyes sparked as she grinned in sheer excitement. No one had ever addressed her like that. In fact, few people ever realized she wasn't some ordinary storm. Lighting down on the wooden planks, she laughed in delight, looking this other woman up and down incredulously.

Piper did not start in surprise like her shipmates, nor did she smile or laugh. Rather, her eyebrow twitched at the being's laugh. "I ask you again, do you think this is funny?" she snapped. The being blinked, a little surprised, though the smile only slightly faded as curiosity replaced it. "Well...yeah," she said simply, a slight crackle underlying her voice.

Piper strode forward, unafraid, and put her face aggressively into the other woman's. Some of the crew glanced at each other, not sure what to make of both this storm creature and Piper's uncharacteristic behaviour. "There is nothing funny about this at all," she said, scolding, "our lives were at risk. People died."

The storm laughed. "But that's entirely the point!" she exclaimed. Piper's eyebrows honestly could not be brought any lower. "People are just so entertaining when they're panicking," the being explained flippantly. "You would let people die...just so you can watch them panic?" Piper asked in a voice so low, the men around them leaned in to try and hear it. The storm woman blinked, clearly thinking the answer was obvious. "Well, yeah, why not?" she answered with a light shrug.

She had not seen the slap coming. Piper's hand stung and she winced at the sharp reminder in her torso that she had a broken rib. The men around them retreated, shocked and afraid of the spirit's retaliation. But the storm just raised a hand to her cheek and blinked at Piper in shock. No one had ever slapped her before.

It wasn't even that no one had tried. She was a storm - her physical form was only as physical as she allowed it. No one could slap her because no one could physically touch her unless she wished it. Yet, this sailor's hand had actually made contact. The woman herself had not budged from her position. She didn't reel back in shock or fear, she didn't move to grovel or plead forgiveness, she didn't even so much as apologize. The storm honestly didn't know what to make of it.

After a second of the two staring at each other, one shocked and the other furious, the storm finally blinked and leaned in. "What's your name?" she asked. Piper started. "What?" she asked. It was now her turn to be startled and confused. The storm hadn't really given her any of the reactions she had been expecting.

"I -I'm not just going to tell you my name!" she exclaimed incredulously. Did this storm not understand she had essentially picked a fight with her? The spirit pursed her lips and thought for a second before she sighed and straightened back up. Tilting her head, she shrugged and grinned. "I'm Arabex," she said confidently, "remember that." With that, she suddenly melted away into the billowing shape of a cloud and returned to the sky. Just as quickly as it had come, the storm was gone. Piper blinked. What...just happened, exactly?

The storm and the threat she posed was gone. Confused and angry, Piper threw herself into her work, and no one dared talk to her unless the job required it. The rest of the voyage passed peacefully, and they pulled into harbour at a port town along the Dead Coast.

The captain just about dragged Piper along to explain to their client how they'd lost an entire ship and its cargo at sea when there had been no reports of a storm. That had surprised Piper at first, but then, as a spirit, that Arabex likely didn't move in a manner consistent with most storms - no one would have known about it if they weren't in the vicinity at the time. It was her reputation alone that finally convinced the client, although if stuff like this happened again, she felt she wouldn't be able to maintain it.

After only two short days of rest, Piper roped in a job on a regularly scheduled merchant vessel. They were hauling a shipment for a regular client in these parts: Summers Inc. Of course, she kept quiet about the fact she knew the owner (who was also the CEO) fairly well - he and her mother were friends. Nothing ever went well when her employers heard she knew the client. Thankfully, no one on the ship knew that - yet - and they were underway before long.

Everything was going just fine, though it was a little windier than the previous voyage, but nothing the skilled sailors couldn't handle. At least, everything was going fine, until a little niggle picked at the back of Piper's mind. It felt like a mild storm, slow and sluggish, just off the horizon. She turned her mind to it for a moment, then determined it wasn't going to affect them, and they left the sensation behind.

It was only a moment later that the niggle returned - the same storm as before. Piper frowned. Now that she thought about it...she recalled doing the same thing just moments before the whole situation with Arabex.

Piper dropped what she was doing, ignoring the sailors who turned to her in confusion as she dashed off to the port bow. The captain, talking to a sailor nearby, looked over at her in confusion. After a second, the woman came over and said something to Piper, but she wasn't listening. Her focus on the horizon, Piper reached out with her senses, as well as she could. It was indeed the same storm they'd passed earlier, though it was now matching their heading and speed, hiding out of sight just beyond the horizon.

Only days before, Piper wouldn't have understood why or how it was even possible. She'd probably have dismissed it as an anomaly, if she noticed it at all. Actually, by now she was certain she had experienced it before and done just that - dismissed it. An entire ship paid the price, and she wasn't going to make the same mistake again.
