While the waters close to the shore are tropical, Freighlei grows colder the further south you go. Very few areas are covered in ice, travelers are advised to watch out for icebergs. Because of the temperatures, the water is surprisingly clear! (+2 stat of choice)

Return to Freighlei Ocean

The Princess and the Sea Dragon (P)(Quest)

Makara

The frigid waters of the Freighlei Ocean might keep many at bay, but the Leviathan found the chill to be quite homey. The prey here was also of acceptable size--the tropic temperatures had a way of multiplying the numbers but reducing the size of the creatures it enjoyed feasting on. Out here food might be more scarce but one kill would feed the monster for a month.

And then there were the wayward boats that would 'accidentally' sink and well...flailing humans made for a tasty treat every now and again. Nothing more than a kernel to get stuck between his teeth really, but tasty all the same.

As he glided through the cold waters one such vessel came into his line of sight. A ship out here at this time of year? Well, it must be Christmas come early! Makara slipped deeper into the ocean as he changed his course towards the boat; he need not fear the clear waters for his skin was the perfect camouflage. And if all else failed the magical bubbles that hovered at his fins and around his body could be moved and manipulated to help create confusion.
"I have been hidden, scorned, adored, worshiped, forsaken, coveted and banished more times than I care to count. But the one thing all those experiences cannot steal from me is the gentle soul I was born with, the kind heart I have molded, and the bright ideals for the future that have lit my way through the darkness of the past."

The trip was not one that Kayin had been looking forward to but she stood at the helm and looked out over the crystalline waters anyway. It was another peace treaty she was being sent to to promote the good will of her people...though Kayin knew what was truly expected of her. Her father continued to send her out on these 'peace negotiations' hoping to marry her off to one of the princes and gain a larger share of wealth and territory for himself. As the only daughter of the ruler, Kayin gained that 'honor' of bait. It hadn't worked thus far and the young maiden was determined that it would not happen this time either. Her life had been anything but a princess fairy tale but it was in these still moments she could still forget her lot in life.

"Um, Princess Kayin? Are you...quite sure you're dressed enough? There's a terrible bite in the air," a small voice called out. Kayin turned to see the small face of her hand maiden peeking out from under a thick fur hood. The rest of her was lost beneath the ripples of leather and fur. Kayin herself was dressed only in a gown and a soft leather overcoat with a small golden tiara held fast in her right hand.

"I'm fine, Melody. Was there something you needed?"

Melody hopped to attention and seemed at a loss for words for a moment. "Oh, ah, yes!
You're royal guard would like to speak with you about arrival plans; the captain says we're only a day away from shore now."

The princess nodded and placed the tiara back on her umber locks with a sigh. "Very well, lead the way."

Layna

The guard paced in the cabins assigned to her, waiting on the hand maiden to fetch the princess. Kayin was a wild spirit despite her quiet and calm demeanor...all the more reason to ensure that the reigns of responsibility and duty were handed back to her before they came ashore. She hadn't let her people down yet...but with each new quest she grew more weary of the task at hand and more free-thinking.

Layna didn't blame her, not entirely. But it was her job on this voyage to see that the Princess made an effort to present herself as a desirable bride and she was going to do said job.

The door creaked open and Melody's face peered in before pushing the door open more grandly. "Presenting her majesty, Princess Kay..."

"Oh please, Melody. Not out here. We're all equals on this boat."

Melody shifted uncomfortably--an act that was clearly visible despite her over-sized coat-- and nodded despite herself. Layna stepped forward and swept both hands behind her back in an effort to be the face of authority on the ship. She still wore her silver breastplate in spite of their being in the middle of the sea and Kayin could only assume it was to keep herself as the one in charge by appearance.

"M'lady, we're nearing the shore and I need to go over the itinerary with you once again before we reach port. The royal family of Baa'sek will be awaiting our arrival but there is a mild storm brewing closer to the coast. We won't have a moment to delay upon docking so everything much go perfectly."

Kayin withheld a sigh as she stared Layna in the face. The woman was always so hard to get a firm read on, but Kayin had no choice but to play along. Or so she thought.

Boats were oddities to Makara--sure they sailed here every now and again but rarely such a small vessel as this. He'd seen many boats equipped for research in these waters, but this was too flimsy for sure heavy machinery and man-power. The sea serpent cocked his head to the side in curiosity as he watched the gap between the vessel and himself close. Well, not the hearty snack he had been hoping for...but this would do.

Coiling slightly he threw himself towards the boat through the water, using his massive flippers to drive him upwards faster and faster. He bend his head and neck as he drew closer and prepared to ram the craft with his mighty shoulders.

Before Layna could unroll her scroll and go over the proceedings, the boat jumped and gave a horrible shudder. Melody screamed out and hit the desk--becoming little more than a pile of furs and leathers. Layna instinctively reached for her sword as she looked around for a threat, but Kayin remained unusually calm as she held fast to the nearest piece of furniture.

"Have we struck an iceberg?"

"Doubtful, we would not have been thrown that direction from running into an iceberg headon and grazing one wouldn't have caused such a sudden jar. M'lady, handmaiden, let's get topside quickly in case the hull has taken on damage."

The trio moved out into the light of day quickly. Melody hung close to the center, her eyes never leaving the nearest lifeboat. Kayin and Layna moved closer to the port and starboard sides respectively, scanning the water for any artifact that they could have run into.

"Nothing of interest on starboard. M'lady?"

Kayin peered over the guard rail and swore she saw a monstrous eye blink up at her before sinking back into the deep blue of the water.

"...Nothing that I can be sure of. I think this sea air is playing tricks on my mind."

There were faces appearing over the boat: one, two...three? That was all, three? How utterly disappointing. Makara allowed himself to sink a little further into the depths while he studied the boat above. It was hardly worth much effort for barely a mouthful and for a moment he debated drifting away and not even bothering. But a glitter in the sunlight caught his attention: something on top of one of the shadowy heads peering over the edge of the boat.

There was hardly anything any dragon species could do to escape the pull of treasure and Makara found himself  moving closer to the surface. Change of plans then--he wanted that sparkling treasure for his horde. But he'd have to be careful--such a tiny treasure would easily get swallowed up by brutish tactics. A deal, then, was in order instead of his previously planned meal.

As Kayin and Layna peered over the ship, soon joined by a trembling Melody, they watched in silent horror as a dark shadow rose closer and closer. Layna held her sword at the ready and carefully reached out a hand to steer Kayin away from the boat's edge. Melody shrank back towards the cabins with a hushed sob.

"No iceberg moves like that, what is going on?"

"Just stay back, Princess, and let me address the threat."

A cobalt fin broke the surface and rose like a sail above the ship until a massive head was eye level with the travelers.

"Dear Gods..." Layna breathed and Melody let out a scream.
